Bought my Hexa set about a year ago. Wore it about half way down so far. If the chain is done i won‘t replace it with Hexa. Not worth the extra money (4 - 5 euro) in my opinion. Only benefit i see is that its easier to sharpen in the field. Which i rately do, cause i always have one or two extra chains with me and do the sharpening job at home on my bench. Just my two cents. Greetings from a way to cold and rainy southern Bavaria.
Thanks for your comments. I agree. I hope the costs come down a bit with volumes getting out. I think as you said it is easy to sharpen and maybe a little faster cut. Time will tell.
Are you wanting cutting speed ? I think I have that comparison on an earlier HEXA video. You can look at the tooth comparison on todays video. The filed Oregon tooth looks the same as the new Stihl chain. Please give me more info on what you want to compare.
So the HEXA Chain from Stihl just has a factory HEXA grind on it or is there any shape difference in the cutting teeth on HEXA chain vs an RS chain? I assume since you filed an Oregon chain with a HEXA file, you end up with the same result as Stihl OEM HEXA chain? Just wanted a little clarification and keep up the strong work Tim!
Thanks for the comment. If you look, on the video, I did an overlay of the two teeth. A Stihl HEXA and an Oregon 72 LGX. There is a difference in the raker design, but the teeth are very similar. I haven’t put the two side by side in the wood but would anticipate similar results.
I have been running 2 66DL 063 hexa chains along side a loop of RS and RSLF. The hexa cutters are slightly narrower and and lower than the RS / RSLF. I Have not tried sharpening a normal chain with the hexa file because I don’t think there would be any benefit. The advantage of the hexa chain is the narrower kerf and the different depth gauge shape / design, that helps reduce vibration.
Mike I sharpened three chains converting them from round ground to HEXA with the first file I had. It still will sharpen but is worn. I am working on a newer one Now. It seems to be about the same as round files in life.

Just ordered two HEXA files from my dealer, 6-8 weeks out according to Stihl.
It’s still scattered but I’ve had three messages this week that said people had bought them at their dealer. Not sure of the locations.

If you drop your Hexa file 5-10 degrees your chain will cut faster.

There is a difference in the HEXA depth gauge and the standard Stihl RS also.

@@ForestApps I must have run into a bad one then. I purchased a box and will try the new ones to see if the problem persists.
@@MikeNoyes You bought a box of HEXA files or chisel bit square files? That would have been an expensive box if HEXA ….
