    I admire how you pushed thru that ugly stage - and it was there for a while. You looked like you knew it was saveable even when I had doubts. Thanks for sharing - I’m still looking for that kind of confidence in my work. Nice job!

      Haha thank you Vicky, sometimes I start to panic during painting process, but this time I had no doubts, it was all so straight-forward, first just rough areas of color and than sharper details on top. Love the paper that allows for lifting, on other type of paper this approach might have failed.

    I always have a problem with hair. You make it look so easy. This is a lovely picture and I learned so much from it. I struggle with limiting my pallet, but will try something similar. I think i'll also go back to your previous study you referenced. I plan on taking some time to myself this weekend while my dog mends from surgery and do some studies. Thanks again, as always, for your lovely work and walking us through your processes.

    I personally like the white added to the eyes and the lips but prefer the hair without it. Thank you so much for sharing. I had no idea how shapeless and messy a beautiful picture could start out. It was so educational and entertaining to watch you keep adding layers. There was a long part of the video where I would have thought the painting was ruined but as you kept going, suddenly so much beauty and form appeared. It's a stunning painting and a wonderful tutorial. Thanks again

    I did the same "soulmate" paper search last year. It turned into a HUGE project that took months.. I belonged to a painting group at the time and interest was very high pushing me to keep going beyond where I would have stopped. People even started sending me paper to include, some from other countries I couldn't get where I live. In the end I tested about 50 different brands, types, weights, and finishes (all finishes are different even in the same paper). What I found is that every single one is different. They all have their strengths and weaknesses. There is no one paper that does everything well. Sizing tends to lean toward either lifting or glazing.. the few that try to do both do not do either well. I personally found blended paper worse than pulp alone, and cotton best of all. The difference between pulp and cotton was so great I would never use pulp again if I had a choice. You have to actually paint on it using all the techniques you use as a painter to understand it, swatches are not enough. I had a set of tests, two actual paintings (a sky for washes and several lifting approaches, and a group of leaves each with a different approach... but you should paint what you normally do), and used the same paint and brushes for each for consistency. I made extensive notes directly on the paper and then photographed each both to share and as a permanent record.. it's very easy to forget what your experience was after a few different papers so record keeping is very important. You can get suggestions from others but in the end it's a very personal decision. I found several different brands/finishes I really enjoy.. and I learned a lot about how I paint and what is important to me. It was very worthwhile and I would encourage anyone to try it... you can get a lot of papers as sample sheets or single sheets...or share papers with friends... which keeps the cost down. Paper is the most important ingredient in watercolor IMO, it affects every aspect of the painting. I would rather have the cheapest paints and brushes, and my favorite paper, than the opposite.

    • @JaneBeata
      @JaneBeata  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am pinning this comment, thanks for your insight. I agree with everything you said and I havent nearly ever tried as many papers. But I have about 20 types in the studio and some blocks I painted on 10/12 pages and still wasnt 100% sure about all the properties, my thoughts werent complete. I’ll still attempt to offer a video guide of some sorts to help people chose the paper according to the type of techniue they want to go for. 👍🏻

    • @waymire01
      @waymire01 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JaneBeata I'm looking forward to it, you may have some papers I've never had. I'm especially curious about Hahnemuhle, they have so many different varieties and I've only ever tried one. It's really hard to get here, especially in single sheets. It's just too expensive for me to buy an entire block or pack of paper I may never want to paint on again. Fabriano also changed their sizing right after I finished my project.. I'm curious to see the difference between the two but not enough to buy more lol. I didn't care for the last version.. except for the soft press which only they make, it's half way between hot and cold press and very interesting to work with. This is the second time they changed because botanical painters have been complaining for a few years now about the change before this. Apparently the hot press was completely different and many were very unhappy.

    • @JaneBeata
      @JaneBeata  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@waymire01 I hated the soft press :( but I always wonder when paper acts weird if its me getting a wrong bunch.. I will check that one more time since you advocate it but I never ordered it after people couldnt finish their paintings properly during workshops.

    • @waymire01
      @waymire01 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JaneBeata You would probably still not like it, I think we like different kinds of paper based on your comments in the video. I didn't care for the Moulin Du Roy. My favorites are Arches, Saunders Waterford, Langton Prestige, Bee cotton, and Baohong. I like a thirsty paper, that absorbs and holds on to color so it glazes without any lifting. Pretty sure all of them are gelatin sizing.

    omg, I always looking for painting like this. It actually reminds me of my favorite watercolor artist, Kelogsloops, bcs I love his color palette and artworks. But he's been mia for quite some times :((
    Well, I'm glad that I found your account! and I also love your color palettes, they're just so gorgeous and inspires me to make some paintings

      Yesss! Kelogsloops is also one of my favorites because of his color palette and I’m so glad to have came across her & find another artist with a style I’m also drawn to

      Thanks so much Min! I love Kelogsloops! I put on his videos every time I need an instant inspiration :) His style is far more controlled than mine, but really miss his videos - hope he uploads more.

    Wow. So beautiful. I love the juxtaposition of the loose parts and the details parts. And although I know what you mean about adding the white...I think not only this this make this portrait pop and sing...it's really your style. So I loved it.

    I am so so happy to have stumbled upon your TH-cam video! I paint portraits and this video is really helpful for me, especially the lifting part. I usually don’t do it. For a moment I was wondering what paper you’re using, I thought it was Saunders Waterford. Thank you for telling what paper you used and listing all your materials. May I ask if you used red gouache at the end of your painting to add to the florals?

      I'm usually devastated at the first stage when working with watercolors, the paint leaks everywhere and I start panicking

    • @JaneBeata
      @JaneBeata  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just make yourself finish the painting every time. After a while, you notice different stages and you'll just trust your ability to add the definition in the later layers of the process. Blurry and messy underpainting can even give the picture a nice flowy look in the end. But of course, it's a bit risky and not aways it works :) That's why I experiment on a smaller size papers, in the worst case you start over.

  • @AnotherMADCreation
    @AnotherMADCreation 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The painting is beautiful both ways ... You could always photograph or scan it before you add the white, so you have a clean copy?

    • @JaneBeata
      @JaneBeata  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Marcia :) Well that's a great suggestion (I do photograph the process often though), the remark was just on how automatic was that addition, I didnt even stop to consider it :)

    I'm also a fan of the Moulin du Roy paper, and very sad that I can't get it here. I read somewhere that it is now produced at the St. cuthberts Mill, so maybe the waterford paper has similarities with it. But I didn't have the chance to try it yet.

    You could tone down the white or use pastel pencil. You could smudge it with finger or tissue

    • @JaneBeata
      @JaneBeata  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Those are great suggestions, thanks a lot :) I could smudge the gouache too but I was rather thinking of not using additional mediums for a while, just purely watercolor.

    • @waymire01

      Pastel pencil is wonderful on top of watercolor, I much prefer it to ink or gouache. It's able to go bright but also very easy to soften and there are many colors to choose from.
