UCBVG is by far my favorite TH-cam channel, and I am always impressed by the insane amount of detail you put into each video. Thank you for all you do, and keep up the great work!
Love these videos! One thing you didn't point out (cosmetic, so not important, but interesting to note) is that the shrine where you find the Helmet of Erdrick is the one south of Rimuldar. And you can always tell when you're in Alefgard, because you hear the DW1 music playing.
I'm pretty sure there's a part of Alefgard where you get off the ship and you don't hear the Alefgard music. Then disembark a few steps away and it's Alefgard.
When I got my subscription to Nintendo Power in 1990, it gloriously came with a free copy of Dragon Warrior. That copy included a map and item/weapon guide for Dragon Warrior II, which was super valuable when I rented DWII a bit later on. I was stoked when I found the Sword of Destruction, but I could never figure out how to use it. I tried equipping it and then went to the little guy to have the curse removed, only to discover it deleted the sword from my inventory. Big sad face for little me.
Gotta confess - I have no plans to play most of the games you play thru here, and in fact I've never heard of a lot of em. But I'm an illustrator and these are fantastic to have on while I'm working. Interesting, engaging, great stuff. Keep it up!!
This was truly a great video and I was fully engaged into the adventure for quite a few days. I never expected to learn so many new things about a game I've beaten countless times! Excellent work!
3:20: "Now, I have no idea how a tree can dance a jig, it's something I would like to see..." This animation actually exists in Dragon Quest VIII. th-cam.com/video/H7vjy4NACes/w-d-xo.html
I just started noticing that Kylo is on almost all of the thumbnails. My favorites are the space helmet in Gradius, hanging out with Rush in Mega Man 3 and 4, and driving a tank in Jackal.
I hope you eventually do Dragon Warrior 3, even though it would be an enormous task. Especially because of how much customization is available through class changing. Oh, and play as a girl. There's a few dialog changes that are kinda cool.
DW3 is my favorite one. Id probably have to break that video up into at least 3 parts. There are multiple reasons to play as a girl. What does everyone think the best DW3 party is?
@@UCanBeatVideoGames The best is probably the traditional Hero, Soldier, Wizard and Pilgrim. But I personally love the Fighter and switch that for the Soldier. But I think the traditional team and changing the Wizard into a Sage is "mathematically" the best choice.
@@UCanBeatVideoGames I usually grind like crazy to make the ultimate team. I currently have a team of three Fighters with all spells. And their stats were boosted by my seed-farming thieves. I spent forever farming IntSeeds before doing the final class change, since Fighters and Warriors gain 0MP on level ups. Without going too crazy, though? Probably a Cleric->Warrior, a Warrior->Cleric, and a Jester->Sage. Too bad Sages and Fighters take so much experience to level up. Oh, my favorite way to grind levels late game is to have someone with BeDragon equip the Starry Bracelet to double their speed. Then, summon monsters outside Rimuldar until you encounter several Liquid Metal Slimes. Have your fast character cast BeDragon, and your other party members cast SpeedUp. The dragon form has its own stats, and it will never outspeed the Liquid Metal Slimes on its own, but since SpeedUp will occur after transforming, you'll get a significant boost to speed and can spew fire before some of the Liquid Metal Slimes act. Of course, I played the GBC version, so I'm not sure if the mechanics are the same on the NES and SNES versions.
@@wesleyoldham4222 You sound like someone that would love the Hardtype hack of this game. It's awesome! The enemies are boosted but the Hero is slightly altered and it's a welcomed challenge increase to this game!
Now that I think on it, this game reminds me of Mass Effect 2 (obviously DragonQuest is the OG). -There is an attack on an allied settlement (Moonbrook) -You assemble your team -You acquire a ship -You have to get an IFF (the Eye of Malroth) -You make a dangerous journey to the enemy’s unforgiving home base (Road to Rhone) -The final boss is not Harbinger but a Reaper (Hargon and Malroth)
Great job. We all appreciate the work you do. Last week, on this channel, was the first time I'd heard that this game was difficult (compared to the others). Then I heard it again on another DQ site. I beat this game back in the day without a guide. The only part I thought was hard was the last floor of that cave, before you entered the plateau of Rhone. The monsters there, as well as in Rhone, felt like a huge difficulty spike. It was as though I had skipped a huge portion of the game and didn't level up. Of course, it was also on TH-cam that I first heard that 7th Saga was difficult as well. Another game I'd beat a few times, back in the day. One of my favorites. I was one of the few people I knew that loved these types of RPGs.
Might just be me but I thought DQIV is the best RPG on the NES. When it was released, a friend of mine told me it was the worst game he'd ever played. He hated Act 5 for some reason. About 15 years ago, I give it a shot in the emulator and I loved it so much, I purchased my own copy of it for around $60.
@@roberthunter479 I can see why your friend was frustrated; NES DW4 had the obnoxious system in Ch5 of relegating everyone except the Hero to AI control. It really turned me off as well when I played it; thankfully there is a code (either Game Genie or PAR) that can remove the AI system and it makes DW4 a lot more fun to play. That, and the code that sets Taloon to always do his special actions in combat. 😉
@@shughan666 Agreed. From what I've heard(I don't think I've played any of the re-releases of it), they realized/were told by fans that it was a terribad system and gave the option to turn it off and/or just flat out removed it in later versions of the game on other systems.
Loved this game as a kid . It was the last one on the NES I have never beaten it till about 6 years ago at the young age of 38 lol . I was laid off of my job i had for 10 years. While i was off my first month of 3 total till I found a new job. I sat down for 1 week after the family went to bed and i finally beat it. I always made it to the end but couldn't beat the dragon at the end. I cant remember how times i started over thinking maybe i was missing something but I never found anything else I could have done. But Hargon trick is a game changer i defiantly could have beaten it decades earlier. I love all of your videos keep it up.
Erdrick's Sword walked so that NFTs could run. Supposedly a super rare item with totally manufactured value with next to no REAL value in reality, both as a weapon (You can buy the dragon sword just by grinding in the ocean for about a half hour or so at about the same time) and it only sells for 2 bucks.
The Erdricks sword was such a throw away item in this game. Totally optional and totally outclassed later, to the point where missing it yields no real sense of loss. I hated that.
Yeah it helps to treat them like separate games a 1&2 doesn't have customization that 3 botched (and people are lingering before the other 2 games get a chance to be faithful while improving things). Still, if it's more intuitive and that dq2 prince doesn't die spamming thwack to miss, I may try it.
Thank you for these videos! I'm 51, and I play old-school Nintendo games every couple of years. (I learned about you a couple of years ago when I watched you Faxanadu walkthrough.) I had never played Dragon Warrior 2 back in the late eighties / early nineties, but I just started a few days ago, and it's great. It's definitely an ambitious game, but I don't care for the pacing so much. You find your two sidekicks a little too close together, and some of the other items, as well. (For instance, the Golden Key unlocks too many goodies, and one of the towns has both the Jailer's Key and the Water Key.) I'm just glad that you have this walkthrough. Sh!t be difficult. I would have never known about that item near the dog, the hidden convict in his cell, etc. Keep up the great work!
insane work ethic. i always worry about burn-out. just know you have an audience out there that's rabid for this kind of content. :) these older nes rpg's certainly take time to cover so completely. still waiting on a patreon account for you so we can toss you some coin for all of your work.
I don’t know how many hours I spent looking for Erdrick’s Shield in Dragon Warrior after I found it in the sequel. To my surprise, years later I learned it did not exist… I still want to know how this shield came to be… I think it’s a forgery!
Everyone knows that Erdrick used a greatsword, and _rules as written,_ you can't use a two-handed weapon and a shield at the same time. (Adjusts glasses.)
It's even more confusing if you look at Dragon Warrior 3. The sword, armor, and shield are legendary, but the best helmet is mass produced and sold at a shop in Rimuldar. And it's more confusing still, because in the later versions of DW3, Ortega's Helm is added. It is weaker than the Great Helm, but it resists status ailments, so which one a casual player beat the game with is a real tossup.
Fordged by the god (or goddess) rubis, later, just like the other sword and armor items were.. or at least blessed into 'being' Erdric's items after they were used by Erdric in DQ3. I'd like to think Ortega's Helmet became blessed into being Erdric's Helm..
Congrats Kylo. I was looking through the iOS store for any thing interesting and what did I see? Under “popular games” dragon quest 2 was the first in the list. This is the influence that you have. You upload a video and that game becomes a #1 download.
I beat this game about 3-4 years ago. Major milestone imo. I kinda want to replay using these dang tricks. The grind after the last cave took a couple days. Now I could probably bang it out in a couple hours.
Bro.... Thank you for getting through this game. I know it can be a slog compared to the other Dragon Warriors. RPGs are my favorite videos you make, and now you're free to do 3 and 4, which are probably the best 1 and 2 games ever made for the NES. A fantastic lesser known side scroller NES game is Shatterhand. It's a short game, but pretty difficult. I'd be curious to see what path you end up taking.
Thank you for this Herculean effort! I missed a UCBVG release last weekend, and am so happy to enjoy this now. I hope there's a "supercut" for this game coming up. Dragon Warrior 1 is the first UCBVG video i watched 2 years ago, and i enjoyed this one so much too.
In dragon quest 3...I forgot the enemy name..but it's one of the hand ones like the goopis..but they summon granite titans..my record was a 77 min battle letting them keep summing the...I got over 3435000 xp and gained 20 levels it took forever
That's an old RPG grinding tactic called "harvesting". Great way to grind in DQ if you can't stand how cowardly metal enemies are, but it does get repetitive after a while.
If there's any doubt about the quality and thoroughness of these videos, this man grinded and grinded in order to show us the Magic Hat, an item with a drop rate of 1 in 125. That is dedication to giving us quality vids.
Props for beating the nes version. As it is considered the hardest game in the series and one of the hardest 8 bit games in history The remakes were cake since the Prince and princess got buffed so much and the game could be saved any where. Good job,
Lt. Dan got me invested in some sort of Staff of Thunder company. So then I got a call from him saying we didn’t need to worry about money no more. -Kylo Gump
Yes this is pedantic, but it's Rubiss, not Rub-iuss :) Loved this video. I remember playing this on the NES as a teen. It's the one game DQ game I never owned, but I remember renting it a number of times. I recently played this on my phone, and while it is an improved game in every way, it doesn't quite have the nostalgia of playing the original version. Thanks for putting this out.
And it's with seeing the Silver Key doors that i realize I've NEVER beaten the NES original. Just the remakes. Edit: I cracked up at the Juggalo comment. XD Quick, someone call Slim Shady! Or use magnets on them. They have NO IDEA how those things work.
I love how Dragon Quest Builders 2 expands on the story of this game. Hargon becomes more of a character, Malroth is explained, and the nature of creation and destruction and the relationship between them is given some pretty deep thought.
While watching the playthrough in the Cave to Rhone, I noticed that all dungeon areas are made up of 2x2 tiles - and then I realized, that all the pitfalls are always in the top right of a 2x2. So, theoretically if you notice that, you could just always avoid the top right square of any 2x2, and never fall into a pit. Neat I really like your inclusion of maps and monster information on the side
I can't believe I watched the whole thing! I did it in small chunks. It's definitely a very interesting game to at least watch. I like some of the exploits. The monster designs are cool and the fights seem pretty dangerous even as the characters get stronger. That mysterious hat seems nice, but sounds like quite the slog to try to get it. Covering a game like this requires a lot of effort, I'm sure. Thanks for that. Also, I enjoyed your humor throughout this and your general narration.
This game was so much fun, but definitely Nintendo Hard when it came to that last cave in the game and also trying to find that last orb. So crazy, but once you beat this game, you feel awesome about it. Cheers to another great video!
I enjoy watching your videos. This channel has definitely rekindled my love of being an old-school gamer, sir. Thank you, and keep up with the great work!
This walkthrough is great. I like your videos. And for those who want to play the game. Don’t forget that the trick with the thunder staff don’t work if you play on emulator. So by the time you get the money for the sword and the shields, you should be lvl 100 and every monsters will be much more easier to kill. Goddamn it’s still a grinding game 🤣
This video makes me miss my copies I got and sold. I loved the ephemera that came with these. The guides were pretty thick. I wish I didn't have to sell them when I did, but thems the breaks. Get to experience them now with my kids
Yo! I really appreciate this. Thank you. Dragon Warrior 2 was the very first JRPG I ever played. I never quite beat it. I got to inside Rhone, I might've seen Atlas once, but- that was as far as I got. Silly me, I tried to fight everything, all the time. "It's just more XP. And if I can't make it, I'll be that-much stronger the next time I attempt it! Gee, it sure is taking a long time to get to the next level." (I was younger than 10, so some things just kinda went over my head) Now, I hear from Dragon Warrior(or Quest) fans that game 2 is the hardest one in the series. I'm shocked. I'm shocked that I still love the genre. Though, its difficulty did intimidate me for a long time and I haven't played any of the others in the series. I should really give that a try, sometime before or after I deal with my Sierra adventure game PTSD and fear of no-win states.

Almost 7 hours of Dragon Warrior! 🤯(Not counting all the work of editing and searching for information)
... That's what I call commitment
Thou art the best!
Thanks! I think my total hours of work on this one is close to 100
Proof how much more goes on behind the scenes!
I still hate transitions because of this game. I didn't know it was 33%. That's nuts. Also Artho is the first casualty I've seen on this channel. Treasure chest not a garbage can!! HA HA HA HA!! Great video. It should be called "If you can just make it to Rhone." This is awesome.
Metal Hunters and Juggalos, what a combo...... 🤣😂😆 "May thy ears become cabbages and thy tongue a sausage." ROFL! "Malroth makes the Dragonlord look like Barney." (hee hee). And wondering why the sell price of the Iron Helmet is 2363........ This was definitely worth the wait, THANK YOU.
UCBVG is by far my favorite TH-cam channel, and I am always impressed by the insane amount of detail you put into each video. Thank you for all you do, and keep up the great work!
OMG 4 hours no wonder it took you an extra week! That’s crazy awesome!
My favorite Saterday moring cartoon just got even better now. WEll done
Missed you last week bud! WOW 4 hour 2 part! Awesome!
Party at The Moon Tower. Full kegs, everybody's gonna be there.
The long RPG videos are my favorite. Thank you
I love these JRPG videos. Never finished this one. Glad I can just watch you play it quickly and efficiently.
This was truly a great video and I was fully engaged into the adventure for quite a few days. I never expected to learn so many new things about a game I've beaten countless times! Excellent work!
They really went over the top on the dungeons in this one, thanks for the help!
It's going to be fun trying to explain to the Wife why I've been in the basement office for the past 4 hours.
What if I told you...
3:20: "Now, I have no idea how a tree can dance a jig, it's something I would like to see..."
This animation actually exists in Dragon Quest VIII.
th-cam.com/video/H7vjy4NACes/w-d-xo.html
indeed they aren't 'trees' but monsters, kind of like ents.
Thank you! 30 years later I finally completed this game. Cave to rhone was brutal! Agree this one is underrated !
I still think the Dragonlord's grandson should have been a party member! 💙💚💜🐉
That would have been awesome
The wait for this video was well worth it, thank you for all the work you put in the table of contents and editing in all the secrets!
Thanks, Rocco - Adding the chapters took me a couple hours, but I think it was worth it
Great video! Dragon Warrior 2 has always been my favorite out of all series! I look forward to see your video on Dragon Warrior 3!
I just started noticing that Kylo is on almost all of the thumbnails. My favorites are the space helmet in Gradius, hanging out with Rush in Mega Man 3 and 4, and driving a tank in Jackal.
He is a very good boy
I hope you eventually do Dragon Warrior 3, even though it would be an enormous task. Especially because of how much customization is available through class changing.
Oh, and play as a girl. There's a few dialog changes that are kinda cool.
Play as the girl and name her Rey!
Without going too crazy, though? Probably a Cleric->Warrior, a Warrior->Cleric, and a Jester->Sage.
Keep watching those ads people! Make sure he is making as much money as possible in this channel. This channel is AMAZING.
Now that I think on it, this game reminds me of Mass Effect 2 (obviously DragonQuest is the OG).
-There is an attack on an allied settlement (Moonbrook)
-You assemble your team
-You acquire a ship
-You have to get an IFF (the Eye of Malroth)
-You make a dangerous journey to the enemy’s unforgiving home base (Road to Rhone)
-The final boss is not Harbinger but a Reaper (Hargon and Malroth)
you have to get an IIF.. that's called the McGuffin.
Nice, I've been waiting for part 2! Something to listen to while playing through Dragon Quest IV myself.
@@roberthunter479 That's quite unfortunate for your friend there. Act 5 is where the game opens up and I'm having fun exploring so far.
Dragon Warrior 4 is my all time favorite game.
All the original Dw games were great. One of my fondest memories was having to pull out the included map and figure out where i am at. 😂
@@xenxander Ehh at least in the ports Cannock can equip it so that makes it worth it.
The remakes for Dragon Quest 3 in 2024 and Dragon Quest 1 and 2 in 2025. Enjoying the play through and yes we appreciate you. Great video!!
That Dark Carnival line made me laugh harder than it should have. Great work as always!
First time play the dragon quest series and can finally beat the 2 games, thanks for this complete guide!!! 🎉
(For instance, the Golden Key unlocks too many goodies, and one of the towns has both the Jailer's Key and the Water Key.)
I'm just glad that you have this walkthrough. Sh!t be difficult. I would have never known about that item near the dog, the hidden convict in his cell, etc.
Keep up the great work!
insane work ethic. i always worry about burn-out. just know you have an audience out there that's rabid for this kind of content. :)
these older nes rpg's certainly take time to cover so completely. still waiting on a patreon account for you so we can toss you some coin for all of your work.
@@wesleyoldham4222 If you don't use Ortega's Helmet you must hate your real life father... 🤔
Wow, that's crazy!
These episodes have been the best enjoyment I've had in a long time. I enjoy looking forward to each and every episode
Falcom sword also screams its name every time you use it
Falcon Punch!
@@UCanBeatVideoGames LOL
Incredible stuff, UCBVG! Stoked for the DQ3 walkthrough, it was my favorite DQ when I was growing up!
Thanks for the walk through! I really enjoyed this game. Dragon Warrior 3 is my favorite NES game and I cannot wait for your runthrough of that game!
I like Shatterhand, cool mechanic with the different robots
This guide encouraged me to dig my copy out of my stash and replay it. I just finished it again last night. :) Thanks for this!
That's awesome - Congratulations!
@@UCanBeatVideoGames Bro, you're awesome! I mean like the best thing to ever happen to TH-cam!
Finally saw the ending after all these years. Well done.
Week by week, you continue to put in a lot of great work and your videos are improving each time. Thank you SO much for all the amazing content!
This was fun! I used this guide to recently beat the GBC version. Thanks!!!
Kids are in bed. I’ve got a beer and UCBVG. The best part of my day is about to begin
Papa bless you and your channel. It’s my version of a Saturday morning cartoon.
@@Animebryan2 ironic ..I'm in crypto currency now and I harvest every day...still not as rewarding as the golden days of dq on nes and ff too
I wont take on this challenge but I love to support the channel.
If there's any doubt about the quality and thoroughness of these videos, this man grinded and grinded in order to show us the Magic Hat, an item with a drop rate of 1 in 125.
That is dedication to giving us quality vids.
Props for beating the nes version. As it is considered the hardest game in the series and one of the hardest 8 bit games in history
The remakes were cake since the Prince and princess got buffed so much and the game could be saved any where.
Good job,
Even after all these years and playthroughs - I learned SO much from this, badass.
Lt. Dan got me invested in some sort of Staff of Thunder company. So then I got a call from him saying we didn’t need to worry about money no more.
-Kylo Gump
If you ever get around to DQ 3... that video is going to be huge.
Thank you for this!
Yes this is pedantic, but it's Rubiss, not Rub-iuss :)
Loved this video. I remember playing this on the NES as a teen. It's the one game DQ game I never owned, but I remember renting it a number of times. I recently played this on my phone, and while it is an improved game in every way, it doesn't quite have the nostalgia of playing the original version. Thanks for putting this out.
OH. I never actually knew you needed the Silver key for the tower doors. Makes sense. Thanks for shedding new light on the subject, UCBVG!
I look forward to all of these videos. I'm a brat kid again who just wants to play video games all day and eat cereal
Neat
I really like your inclusion of maps and monster information on the side
I can't believe I watched the whole thing! I did it in small chunks. It's definitely a very interesting game to at least watch. I like some of the exploits. The monster designs are cool and the fights seem pretty dangerous even as the characters get stronger. That mysterious hat seems nice, but sounds like quite the slog to try to get it. Covering a game like this requires a lot of effort, I'm sure. Thanks for that. Also, I enjoyed your humor throughout this and your general narration.
The ONE week without a video and UCBVG comes back with the longest video yet. I dunno how you do it. A whole lot of work goes into this channel.
I really thought I could somehow get this one done in one week, but there was no way - I was doing like 14+ hours of work a day on it
@@UCanBeatVideoGames well I say take all the time ya need, but certainly appreciate all the hard work.
Yay! Been waiting on this. Keep up the amazing work!
This game was so much fun, but definitely Nintendo Hard when it came to that last cave in the game and also trying to find that last orb. So crazy, but once you beat this game, you feel awesome about it. Cheers to another great video!
Totally agree! Thanks
I would love see ULTIMATE GUIDE: Ninja Ryukenden 3 The Ancient Ship of Doom and Final Fantasy 2. Maybe someday :)
Wish I could give a second thumbs up for the Juggalo reference! Lol
Loved this game, played it a ton on original NES. That end cave and end castle were brutal. Always tough to finish that out.
I really enjoyed this! It was worth the wait!
Thank you!!
