Did someone say Oscar is better? Oscar Peterson (and his "dad" Art Tatum) are 2 of my favorite pianists. So are Bill Evans, Joe Zawinul, Billy Taylor, no point in continuing. Joe Pass is one of my favorite guitarists, but so are Lee Ritenour, Larry Carlton, Barney Kessel, Herb Ellis, etc. Ray Brown is one of my favorite bass players, but so is Niels Pedersen and Jaco Pastorius. It would be insane to try and rate and compare them; apples and oranges.
When I hear Oscar play these impossible passages, it makes me wonder what was actually going on in his mind at the time. Can you imagine the music he could visualize but wasn't able to get onto the keyboard??

I've been studying those two legends as human beings and musicians for many years... and more to come.... They were both perfect in this recording :) They have two entirely different personalities :) Oscar is very quantized in his personality, herbie doesn't care that much about being quantized... They are both very honest in what they are playing reflecting their personality :) nobody is "better" than the other :D It would be super inhumane and boring listening to two oscar petersons at the same time or two Herbies at the same time. Don't you agree?
It's a matter of personal taste. I absolutely don't agree. Oscar does what he does better than everybody, blowing prepared patterns with an outstanding rhythm and sound projection. I prefer Herbie's touch/sound an unpredictability
...well... if... then i'd rather be listening two Herbie's anytime... Oscar would bore me to dearh after max half an hour... no matter how excellent his playing is...

Yeah they don't share the space very well early in this duet. And I mean that literally from a sonic POV, they often play densely in similar registers of the piano at the same time and it's just a mess but things start freeing up more when they trade fours.

Technically it’s huge of coure but kind of confused. They don’t mach together. i much prefer the duet Melfhau - Baron On this tune...terrific !
