Mr. Davis touched - scratch that, wrestled, nearly-innumerable musical geniuses, daring them to play outside clichès. A powerful legacy and unique brand of inspiration that continues to this day. RIP Miles and Chick and may true fusion transcend. Bravo!
Miles Davis and his laid back style of Some Day My Prince Will Come on Trumpet is the best, and no other can come close to his playing. Maestro, to me you where the best, and it was a pleasure listening to your sounds on the trumpet. You was advanced and away a head of your time.
I remember this! Quincy Jones hosted. I was about 13. The synthesizer was gaining momentum like crazy. There were 2 camps, ARP and MOOG. I was ARP. Wanted an Odyssey. Mom couldn't afford it. Had to wait until adulthood!
Time Machine! The music takes you on a journey at the speed of light - in the company of two giants. fantastic time. A lot of emotion discovering this duo almost 50 years later. THANKS !! 🙏🙏
Only geniuses can say "You wanna rehearse? Nah .... me neither. Let's just go on stage in front of an audience, on live tv and figure out what we will play and how we will play it .... right before we play it."
This is one of the best things on the internet. Two absolute masters just killing it with the most modern, advanced, high-level musicality ever. It's so god damn beautiful and creative. I feel my soul ascend and get teary eyed every time 2:40 comes up. So fucking gorgeous.
These guys, along with Rick Wakeman, are my first memories from Keyboard magazine. Keyboard was revolutionary, since it saw synthesizers as topics as worthy as pianos and organs. Via ads in that magazine, I learned about new models from ARP, Moog and other less well-known manufacturers.
Boy, that Afro Herbie Hancock is wearing is like a trip back in a time machine. Reminds me a bit of the black guy on The Mod Squad, but Herbie had way more musical talent.

Nah, Herbie was just laying back. Herbie’s too good to be overplayed. If he wanted to take it somewhere different he’s more than capable to take the wheel.
That's interesting, because apart from the beautiful interplay, some of the synths back then now sound kind of lame at least to my ears, so that only the acoustic piano and the rhodes really stand out...
RIP Chick, one of the all time greats. Thank God we will always have his music to remember his genius and his humanity.

What an amazing thing to see, two master musicians sharing one piano, each master playing 44 or so keys. Phonomenal!!!

Drivethebeat ... what a wonderful and personal comment. One of the best ever. Also didn't know about the arp v. moog phenomena. All very interesting!
Quincy hosted the Downbeat awards from the following year. Was a different edition of the show.

Back when this show aired, my brother and I taped this off TV on a reel-to-reel recorder--a tape that's long lost. I loved it then, and love it now.
