Linda Bell That was the secret for me as well. I had a malignant bladder tumor removed 7 yrs ago after 25+ yrs of 12 UTIs/per year. I developed IC within a month with vulvar pain and pudendal neuralgia. My bones were so weak at 52 that my pelvis broke but radiological proof was “missing.” (The pelvic PT found the breaks easily after I’d been trying to walk for five months!). Oxalates are such a part of this that I still have severe magnesium and thiamine deficiencies and am getting both via IV (almost died). Yet most doctors in the US will actually laugh unless you have frank renal disease.
Finally a doc checked how high the mineral loss via urine was. 800% of “normal loss” of 9 minerals. Those are pretty serious numbers.
For me the Vulvar Pain Foundation here in Virginia was a godsend. That’s the list. Sally Norton too. The big hospital lists are too contradictory. Finally my hands look normal. Everyone assumed I had rheumatoid arthritis. Been detoxing for 7-8 years and still waiting for true full recovery. Spinach and kale are the DEVIL.

    Summary:
    - High oxalate foods like potatoes, raspberries, and spinach may contribute to health issues.
    - Oxalates can interfere with mineral absorption and potentially lead to pain and symptoms.
    - Common symptoms of oxalate poisoning include urinary issues, pain, and discomfort.
    - Genetics may play a role in susceptibility to oxalate-related problems.
    - Oxalates are organic acids found in certain plants, with a strong affinity for minerals.
    - Insoluble and soluble oxalates can cause irritation and inflammation in the body.
    - Absorbed oxalates are processed by the liver and excreted through the kidneys.
    - There is no specific detoxification pathway for oxalates in the body.
    - Oxalate intake can come from the diet and may not be problematic in small amounts.
    - High and sustained oxalate consumption can lead to oxalate accumulation in the body.
    - Excessive oxalate can damage various organs and tissues, affecting the vascular lining, heart, and brain.
    - Oxalate can bind with calcium and form calcium oxalate crystals in different organs.
    - Calcium oxalate crystals have been found in organs like the thyroid gland, eyes, joints, and more.
    - Oxalate deposition can cause mechanical damage, similar to shards of glass, especially in the joints.
    - High oxalate levels disrupt mineral balance, affecting potassium, sodium, and magnesium.
    - Oxalate can interfere with cellular enzymes involved in energy production and repair processes.
    - Oxalate can promote inflammation, potentially contributing to chronic health issues.
    - Oxalates may be linked to conditions like kidney stones, arthritis-like symptoms, and interstitial cystitis.
    - Bladder stones, potentially composed of calcium oxalate, can lead to bladder irritation.
    - The impact of oxalate extends beyond kidney stones and can affect multiple systems in the body.
    - The bladder is normally protected by a sterile lining and immune cells release secretory IgA as an antiseptic.
    - Proteoglycans and glycosaminoglycans maintain a moist lining to prevent bacterial adhesion.
    - Chronic urinary tract infections can weaken the bladder wall, making it more susceptible to bacteria.
    - Bacteria can aggregate on calcium oxalate crystals, potentially causing infections.
    - Oxalate stones in soft tissue can create hubs for bacterial growth.
    - Enterococcus bacteria may be prevalent in chronic UTIs, possibly due to oxalate presence.
    - Oxalate can deplete vitamins, minerals, and disrupt barrier proteins in the kidneys, bladder, and gut.
    - High oxalate diets, including superfoods, can lead to oxalate-related health issues.
    - Oxalate absorption varies among individuals due to gut microbes and gut issues.
    - Antibiotics and certain factors can disrupt oxalate-degrading microbes in the gut.
    - Oxalobacter may not thrive in high oxalate environments.
    - Fat malabsorption can affect calcium processing and oxalate absorption.
    - Leaky gut can increase oxalate absorption.
    - Oxalate is produced in small amounts in the human body, and certain conditions can increase its production.
    - Oxalate can deplete nutrients like vitamin B6 and thiamine.
    - Dumping occurs when the body liberates oxalate from tissues during a sudden reduction in oxalate intake, potentially worsening symptoms.
It's essential to approach oxalate-related health issues holistically and gradually reduce oxalate intake to avoid dumping and acute mineral imbalances.
    Oxalate Toxicity Symptoms:
    - Severe and varied symptoms can occur
    - Emergency room visits due to rapid oxalate elimination
    - Comprehensive planning is crucial
    - Oxalates eliminated through gut, kidneys, skin, and more
    - Symptoms include rashes, cloudy urine, blood in urine, and more
    - GI symptoms like diarrhea, constipation, anal issues
    - Oxalate elimination can cycle in individuals
    - Acute kidney failure risk if oxalate levels spike
    Testing:
    - Testing includes 24-hour urinary oxalate level and organic acids test
    - Organic acids test provides valuable metabolic insights
    - Investing in tests can save money on unnecessary supplements
    - Blood chemistry, genetic tests, and organic acids test recommended
    - Targeted testing is better than guesswork

Re interstitial cystitis as a possible nonsense disease, (I had the same opinion of fibromyalgia initially) when I was diagnosed with it, my then pain doctor (a DO) told me that he’d been taught that after end stage cancer, IC has the poorest quality-of-life. I tried the lidocaine infusions and discovered I was allergic to the drug. I also had bladder stones, sinus stones, tonsil stones and a world famous Wash DC hospital was convinced that I had an ovary 20 yrs post full hysterectomy. It was a calcium-ox growth the size of an oyster shell. I had it surgically removed. My bladder can hold 1.5 liters...I had my spinal cord detethered but sadly it didn’t help the neurogenic bladder.
*I’ve yet to hear you list one thing from oxalates and thiamine deficiency that I have not been diagnosed with at some point.*

I'm almost 60 and I guess I have very strong bones because I fall pretty hard while roller blading and I never have an issue. Right now I'm rehabbing a house and I'm jumping off the counter top instead of using the step ladder after paint the space between the ceiling and the kitchen cabinets. I would do a GOOD parasite program, take a food based multivitamin and multi minerals. Magnesium, calcium, vitamin D3+k, boron, calcium, zinc, MSM. Basically I would do a mineral test to find out what my body was missing. I had a lot of issues and nothing improved until I got rid of the many parasites I had first. I can't imagine not being able to lift weights, or do the many other physically demanding things I do every day, so please give my advice a try you have nothing to loose, best of luck. Oh one other thing I do is take digestive enzymes or digestive bitters to aid in absorption of food as well as supplements.

mica onyx Oh, I did all that. I’d had murine rickettsia which can take a very long time to clear. Getting rid of that took 3 yrs. I did the Great Plains org acids test nearly 10 years ago now, and was diagnosed with a compound acute porphyria soon after. MSM isn’t for everyone. Porphyria is both a liver disease and blood disorder which of untreated can look like a psych issue because porphyrins are neurotoxic. Elliot’s posts are so great because he recognizes that there are CYP450 issues in a lot of people with oxalate toxicity and my subtype of porphyria is all about CYP450 dysfunction. I don’t take calcium because I’d need to take the citrate form and I’m allergic to corn (source of most citrate components). And yes, it’s incredibly possible to have allergic reactions to even molecular sources from allergens. I’ve had to become my own authority on my disease because there’s no definitive phenotype for porphyria patients. I was caught in a perfect storm-type situation in that I was exposed to mold and sewage after an earthquake broke the outbound sewage pipe in our yard pushing the waste inside the house. I wasn’t aware how compromised my liver/kidneys were when it happened. I started with 23andMe right away to search for exacerbating genetic data and there was a ton. I went thru NIH’s undiagnosed diseases program, went to Mayo-Rochester, etc etc. Eventually I gave up on saving the house, and decided to save myself instead. The best thing Great Plains showed me was *that Olive Oil (like green smoothies) isn’t always good for you.*
(Can’t metabolize it.) Luckily my mom had a medical background and she had taught me a lot. I had some very close calls-an intestinal dissection from undiagnosed Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, hyponatremia from the porphyria almost killed me too. Two kinds of cancer where only surgery was possible-toxic treatment isn’t for hepatic disease. The dissection cost me my ileocecal valve without warning and then fat malabsorption as a secondary issue. (I don’t have Crohn’s but folks with that disease often have that same problem, so I found lots of data from that community). Interestingly, there is a “porphyria diet” that’s been floating around for years and when I compared it to the “autism diet” and the “lC diet” and several others-Lo, they were pretty much identical. They were the vulvadynia diet, which is a low oxalate diet. I knew I had to give it another try now that benefits from the heme arginate treatment for my porphyria had kind of plateaued. Sally K. Norton’s info is great, and she’s working on a low ox e-cookbook.
My healing strategy boiled down to asking “but why?” after each supposed definitive diagnosis. Instead of accepting treatment for symptoms I kept researching why things would manifest at all? Eventually the real underlying problems were uncovered and there have been few false steps and misdiagnoses since.
“Self-healing” can only go so far. The longer the body is stressed (I vomited away 60lbs in the first 8 weeks after the sewage spill) the more complex the medical sequelae will be. At that point it’s very unrealistic to expect that actual medical doctors can be dismissed. A lot of people don’t want to consider that they have an actual disease process going on that’s been unmasked by an environmental exposure. In my case it was TWO very rare genetic disorders, neither of which has a cure and either can be suddenly fatal. I’ve outlived the usual “sell-by date” for both through determination and luck. For sure one size doesn’t fit all. And nearly everything’s multifactorial. But once you’re truly sure that medical docs have done their utmost, the real hard work starts.

I think acidic vinegar has some sort of dissolving it and having it released from the skin as a liquid rather than solid. My doctors diagnosed it multiple things that I found not logical. I got it in addition to hematuria that worsen when I drink tea with cinnamon or turmeric. For 30 years no doctors diagnosed it as IC but when I did keto, suddenly I went crazy going to pee every 2 minutes, I then lost 30 pounds unexplainable as I wasn’t overweight. Hello, have had a ?UTI? for a year now. (Due to catheters due to 38mm bladder stone acting like bathplug.) The stone is radiopaque so will be Calc-Oxalate. Five antibiotics were useless, I finally resorted to use of very high dose vitamins etc, making better.
But I suspected actually more a matter of inflammation. I suspected maybe oxalates irritate the bladder (and urethra). Searched oxalate inflammation, found a copy of a Mercola article. Meanwhile Dr Berg has said to dissolve stones with lots of lemon juice (though I used citric acid instead). First day caused tedious tension. Second day came out the other end. Abandoned!
But now I have started on 5ml amounts of lemon several times a day. Rapid reduction of pain in both outputs and now able to rush around again.
A notable effect of the lemon is that my kidney stones started to occasionally hurt - previously the only sign I had them was when found by scans. Presumably the stones getting loosened, which of course means they are also oxalate!

Does anypne know if the oxylates in plants are lower if you sprout them from seeds? I have mung bean, broccoli, and watercress that I was going to sprout. I am new to learning about oxylates so do not know where to find this info.

Nuts and seeds tend to contain high amounts of oxalates, so any seed is suspect if you're sensitive. Pumpkin seeds , watermelon seeds, sunflower and flax are among the safest, as they contain lower amounts. Oils and fats, even when extracted from plants, are all low in oxalates

The best info on OXALATES youve done , oxalate doesn't go anywhere until it is chelated with ions ! it is separated I presume in the organells then rebinds it must force it via osmotic grdienst I guess but always will want to cling back to kidney tubules etc the liposome bdidng is necessary yes the Liver and kidneys are I think damaged , it IS metabolized via phosphate and glycolytic pathways back into other metabolites , but yes after 6 days bicohemm research it is a slow silent killer I'm afraid , but we do need a certain amount it kick starts or supercharges the immune system so a certain amount distributed IS need there is a lot we do NOT know , all arthritis oxalate is a culprit I am afraid .

I have to query the listing of kiwi and plantain as “very high”. I think this depends on ripeness. Kiwi causes the mouth problem if it is UNDER-RIPE. It then has a very sharp taste. But if ripe there is no problem. Likewise underripe plantain tastes very bitter, but when ripe it loses that bitterness..
