Nearly if not all of Kawasaki's bikes have what's called a positive neutral finder. When the bike is not moving you can not shift into 2nd. So when you shift into 1st and stop. Then you shift up it will go into Neutral.

I have the 2017 Z650 and I agree with your review of this bike, it's spot on. It's not the best at anything, but it's also not the worst. It's pretty average, but that makes it really balanced. Most of all it's fun, it's comfortable, it's easy to ride fast, it's got lots of torque up to 120 KPH, and the Z650 is a head turner in white with the green trellis frame peeking out. My previous bikes were a 2015 R3 and a 2013 CBR250R. So this is my first big bike, and it's perfect for learning and improving your skill. This is the bike you buy to learn to ride really good and be comfortable with riding before moving up to a premium brand like Ducati, BMW or Triumph. Whichever 650cc class bike you get, choose the one that most appeals to you or you can get a better deal on, because they are all pretty much the same. There isn't one that stands head and shoulders above the rest.

@@robi.herman its a great bike, but I can't really say much with it being the only bike I've riden. But your just going to have to go out and sit on the bikes to really get a feel for them. I'd recommend starting with something cheap because most likely its going to be laid down. Never rode the Ninja 400 but it look nearly identical to the 650s. Also having already paid off my bike I've actually been looking into getting a smaller cc bike too. I'm stuck between a KTM rc390 and the ninja 400. Also just make sure its something your really going to be into. Going on Craigslist you will see a lot of bikes with not even 1k miles on them being sold. Just make sure its not an impulse buy. Nothing worse than being stuck with a 8k loan for something you regret buying in a couple months.( Sorry for the long comment) Goodluck on whatever decision you make. And make sure to be carefull not to ride over your skill limit. Practice Practice Practice

Finally a fair review of the 650 Kawasaki bikes (Ninja and Z650) - people hate on them, they aren't the fastest - you either love or hate the sound of the twin (people bay about the MT-07 having more "character" - I've ridden supersports for years, and this platform is plenty for people who just want to ride - plenty of haters out there - but I absolutely love my '21 Z650 - great bike, comfortable, and plenty of power (and it looks amazing).

This is a very Fair Review. I have put a couple of thousand miles on a 2017 Ninja 650. Because it is very similar to the 2020 model, I can maybe add a couple of points. The bike is very easy to get used to and will fill the needs of most bikers from beginners to long time veterans 90% of the time. One doesn't have to put many miles on this bike before one learns to appreciate it's predictability. One can also expect to hit fuel mileage in the 60 mpg range when given the proper attention. If I were pressed to pick one bike to ride for 10 years, it would be this bike.

Bought one a few weeks back, driving mostly in town and farm roads. I'm sitting around 200 miles right now. That being said this is the first bike I've ever owned or ridden outside of the MSF course, which was required in here to legally ride.
As for the flashing light for the first 400 miles you are supposed to "break it in" keeping the rpms at or under 4k. All of the main roads near me are 75 mph and 60 mph so its basically impossible to stay under 4000 rpm. Here is something I found off of the net related to the Break In from the owner's manual.
"The first 1 600 km (1 000 mi) that the motorcycle is ridden is designated as the break-in period. If the motorcycle is not used carefully during this period, you may very well end up with a "broken down" instead of a "broken in" motorcycle after a few thousand kilometers"
    and
"In addition to the above, at 1 000 km (600 mi) it is extremely important that the owner have the initial maintenance service performed by an authorized Kawasaki dealer."

Sat on one at the dealership. Comfy seat, great ergos. I'm 6'2", 180# and the reach was sweet. I could shift back and forth on the saddle. You have to realize how bundled up you are to know that with a normal textile or mesh jacket there's room on the seat to move around. I own a 2011 Ninja 1000 and this new 650 is tempting me bad. So much lighter. The Ninja 650 started in 2006. I owned a black/silver with a red shock. Bike was so flickable. Back then though even the factory touring screen was not enough for 150 mile trips. My shoulders and neck were sore from pulling myself forward against the wind. But sitting on the new one it has a taller screen and it's set further forward. To me I'd either add a deflector or they do offer a taller screen from the factory still. This bike is an urban assault vehicle! My 2006, for suspension I had progressives in the front and went up in oil weight to 10. This time around is just replace the innards completely with Race Tech for like less than $400. Stock you find the limitations quickly in either city or sweepers. I do like the styling better. The original was very smooth and rounded. Very aerodynamic. But THANK GOD SOMEONE FINALLY MADE CAT EYE HEADLIGHTS THAT ARE BOTH ON IN LOW BEAM. PLEASE, would someone tell these manufactures how UGLY a single squinty-eyed low beam looks. TFT screen is nice. Probably still have to do a full exhaust install because of the muffler design instead of just a slip-on. I'd have to ask about that or shop it out on the net. I'd opt for the KRT version. The other two colors are dull, boring, easy to turn invisible in traffic. Not a great thing if you commute. One notable thing is the cassette style transmission. With little effort and the shop manual you can swap out gears at will on a weekend. For a commuter meaning lower rev at higher speeds. For the adrenaline junkie you can swap it out for tighter quicker gears. Bike's been around so long there's plenty of combinations to play with here.

This Kawa 650 engines are sound tuned so good from factory, with a nice exhaust note and a very sporty intake sound at full throttle. Of course a V twin with a full system will sound better but if you are not willing to throw money with an exhaust, a tune and extras, then the Kawasaki is ahead.

the zero gravity double bubble solves most of that issues with the 17-19 models and still looks good.. Height of the rider will matter of course. I'm 5'10 and it made a huge differance.. I'm actually glad they went back to the fixed mount. in theory I liked the idea of the adjustable windshield. But it looked horrible in any position other then lowest.

Reviewing a bike when it's snowing, only Chase! Owning the 2017 Ninja 650 the 2020 is the same except for the dash, fairings and different rear and front, engine wise and suspension it's the same! I feel it's an all around bike to do anything you want. As far as the shift light at least on mine you have to set when it decides to freak out at you! Highway riding with the wind at higher speeds is not fun, it's geared wrong for the highway so If you ride the highway to work you need to re gear. Oh and you can wheelie very easily with that bike trust me done it many of times not trying 😂😂. Good review Chase! It's a well balanced all around bike!

I'd like for you to take the 2024 Ninja 650 (LITERALLY just bought one for myself, heading to the dealer with the cash this week) on a test drive, but do it during warmer weather. You say in this video a couple of things such as not being able to slide forward/back on the seat, and not being able to properly tuck, but you're also wearing a ton of clothing, which greatly restricts movement while increasing your overall size. I would like to see what you think about this years 650, and what you also think when riding it in warm weather where you have just regular gear, instead of 3 coats, 2 pairs of pants, etc.

New rider here. Anyone have any thoughts on the best brand of tires? I have a 2009 Ninja 650r I just got a great deal on. Only 4100 miles and garage kept. Problem is the the 4 digit code on the side of the tires shows the front was made in 2007 and the rear in 2008. Not really thrilled about riding around on 15 year old tires. Just want something good for average everyday riding. I'm not going to be coming down the twisties dragging a knee on the ground or anything extreme. Just looking for something that will grip good. Thanks!

I have the '19 model and I have no issue tucking in more. The '20 model has a higher rear seat though, so that might be why you can't get as comfortable crouching. I also put the MRA touring windscreen on my Ninja 650 and it works much better, looks much better and the wind goes right over my head. Replacing the windscreen looks a bit more difficult on the'20 model because the new style has the mirrors, windscreen and front fairing integrated together. I'm also 5'7" so I'm not as tall as Chase.
