  • A comprehensive specs comparison between the Ninja 650 and YZF-R7.
Kawasaki’s very popular staple in the middleweight sportbike segment that is loved by many, the Ninja 650. Up against the new boy coming from Yamaha which is earning itself a lot of hype, the YZF-R7. In today’s video it’s team green vs blue in a showdown of two bikes that could potentially be some of the best all rounders in the category, and while they are very similar in a lot of ways, we can spot a few differences that could be the deciding factor for which you choose.
G’day im Kwackajack and thanks for joining me for another video in the Versus series. Today we are putting both bikes under the magnifying glass to have a detailed specs comparison and see just what the differences are between two quite similar bikes. We’ll be analysing the styling, claimed Engine & power specs, exhaust notes, Weight, Suspension & brakes, Fuel economy, features & price to see where they stack up and if the newcomer R7 has a chance of putting the Ninja in it’s place. Now before we get started please do me a huge favour and give this video a like and hit subscribe if you haven’t already to join our fast growing moto-community.

So I got a Ninja 650 2021 and my brother got a Yamaha R7 2022 two days after I got mine. While I love the look of his R7 , it’s very aggressive with the seat and foot peg positioning. It’s also less comfortable for me because I can’t flat foot on the R7. My brother says my ninja is more comfortable, he can flat foot it and the friction zone is easier to reach sooner and he prefers it. Another thing that I like about mine over his, it’s a lot easier to get a phone mount. I used the Rokform mount. For the R7, you have to get additional pieces to install a phone mount. Both bikes are very nice but I’m very happy with my Ninja 650 which I spent 9.6k for while my brother spent a little over 12k for his R7. He loves his bike as well and the best part is we can always trade bikes for a day if we ever want to switch it up.

If you are thinking about actually getting into track riding or are wondering which one will handle better in the twisties, it will be the R7 all day. A better and more comfortable commuter, ninja 650. Really simple.

Nice comparison, thanks. I will definitely stay with my 2021 Ninja 650. A lot of fun, comfortable, very cool design, fast enough for me, and a good fuel range of about 190 miles average riding on a 4.0 gallon tank from full to 0.3 gallons left. Plus the TFT bright display dash is a big improvement IMO over my old 2008 Ninja 250R analog dashes, as it also has a clock now. The R7 is nice, but considerably more expensive for that smaller fuel tank range IMO.

I agree with all of this. I used to own an 2001 R-1. Loved it, but do not need a 1000 class bike. Before my R-1, I owned a Honda Nighthawk 659 that I loved too.
I really like the R-7, except not a huge fan of the single headlight or the price tag. I like the signature colors, R-7 in blue and Ninja 650 in the KRT green.
In the end, I bought a 2022 Ninja 659 KRT edition. Pick it up next week and I am so excited. I preferred the CBR500 over the CBR650 and it really came down to the Ninja 650 versus the R-7. Honestly, I probably would have gone with an R-7, but finding one was impossible! Just like Yamaha boats, lucky I was able to get one those.
Yamaha shorted some dealers and it seemed most, if not all, we sold already as pre-orders. My dealer here in KC got a truckload of Kawasaki sport bikes from a dealer back East who doesn’t do sport bikes. Came down to matte grey or the KRT green.
Thank you so much for the reviews and video!

I just picked up a write off 2018 Ninja 650, basically to use the engine for a buggy. After looking over a few other smashed Ninjas, the fairings and plastics in general on the 650 are a very over complicated design, the smallest of drops can write off the bike.
Why make the side fairing out of 4 main panels that use weak clips to hold together.
When will manufacturers start to build simple design aero fairings like they did in the 90s.
One drop of a side stand can turn a 13k bike into a 1k parts bike.

R7 win on: looks, ergonomics (if you are not a casual), reliability, agility, torque, higher HP, weight, quick shifter, brakes, exhaust sound, upside down forks, fully adjustable suspension, wider rear tire.
Ninja 650 win on: ergonomics (if your a casual), price, dash, blue tooth.
No competition R7 blows Ninja 650 away.
The price difference is $600 I would buy the R7 for value alone.
R7 you'll most likely be able to own for longer because it's simply better, track ready, and a stunt monster.

Kawasaki is street focused, the ergos are upright (too upright for me), lack of adjustability on the front forks, (should have used an upside down forks.) the seat height is low for riders to tip toe, the handle bar set high, the Yamaha on the other hand is more oriented to the track, the weight is lighter, the usd forks offers adjutability, the H.O model offers more power, the seat height is higher for more tucked in riding position. Correct me if Im wrong.

Personally I'd go for the r7, but not new since it's too expensive, 2nd hand is probably good. And I've seen one recently but it was in such a bad shape, it looked like the owner dropped it at a stand still or something because the right fairing was really messed up. It also looked like it wasn't moved in a while with all the dust it had on it. Poor thing, imagine buying a brand new bike but then leaving it in a parking lot for god knows how long and also dropping it. I think the dude's a beginner.

You can change the brake line and upgrade the suspension to negate the pros of the R7 and still at a cheaper price. Yamaha's lighter weight is probably due to a smaller tank of 3 litres less with shorter range. I would go with kawi any day.

  • @PRSer
    @PRSer 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I think it's a tad little ity bit of an unfair comparison. Yamaha created that R7 from market research from their consumer regarding what motorcycle would they enjoy the most. The R7 is a newcomer meant to stir up it's section of the market and bring more people to Yamaha. The Ninja 650 is an older tried and true platform. The R7 comes from the also legendary MT07 platform. A more fair comparison imo would be if Kawasaki updated the Ninja 650 to compete with the R7. I'm not saying it's not worth the time to compare these motorcycles but to me the Ninja is a more touring long distance vehicle whilst the R7 is more of an actual supersports.
I'm a Kawasaki fanboy but I would choose the R7 for it's sportier purpose.

    • @shino8854

The r7 has aggressive ergos and much improved frame/suspension from the mt07. Maybe it's not a supersport, but I think it's closer than you're giving it credit for.

Brakes are decent but without KLCM,KCMF the safety on cornering becomes risky. Without Steering dampers chances of tank slappers are also high.
