2020 Kawasaki Ninja 400 First Ride Review [GOOD or GREAT?!]

  • The 2020 Kawasaki Ninja 400 ABS has been the flagship for the entry-level category. When Kawasaki raised the bar, the industry had no choice but to listen, prompting the Yamaha R3, KTM 390, and brand new Honda CB300R. With a top speed of nearly 100mph, a 399cc parallel-twin producing 45hp and 28 lb-ft of torque, you can feel the difference from the moment you pull away.

    Finally a review that mentions stop-and-go traffic usability 🤤 That stuff plays a bigger part in the whole riding experience than more people realise!!
    I have 2 questions, glad if you could answer them, having ridden both r3 and ninja 400 back to back.
    Of the two bikes, which would have a smoother throttle response? I.e. rolling on/off throttle at low rpm without harsh fuel injection cut. That considered without having to extensively slip clutch.
    Secondly, vibration levels compared between these 2 bikes at their respective cruising speed/rpm.
    ^Really glad if you could help me answer these questions!! Viewer from Singapore here, where low-speed lane splitting and weekend long straights are common :]

    • @iazncrackitech
      @iazncrackitech 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      this comment is very relatable. Stop and Go traffic while lane splitting in Los Angeles is a pain in the rear.. being a skinny dude weighing 130lbs ( 5'6"), I realized that 650cc and 700cc bikes were too big for me to daily. Also, being able to flat foot and push/waddle a LIGHT bike is a wonderful perk if you have very limited garage space. Bigger bikes are fun, just not a great daily imo.

    This will sound ridiculous, but my 2018 N400 was the best bike I've owned so far, both street and track. So much fun. Had to sell it because of relocation, but this little thing left me with so many great memories. Highly recommended, especially as a first bike.

  • @Oscee613
    @Oscee613 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Sidenote, these 400 Ninjas have been around for a long time but were not sold in US and EU until couple years ago. They are very popular in Asia - many people in Japan, for example, only get 400cc license. Though I am most likely replacing mine for a Z650 or MT07 I actually don't think you need a larger bike than these 400s for urban commuting.

    • @meat-hook
      @meat-hook 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 650 is great because it's more upright than the 636, but the MT/FZ-07 is the best bike for the money I've ever seen. The only thing I don't like is the wind, and the aftermarket screens are ugly.

    Can’t decide between the R3 and the Ninja 400 🥲 they both have features I’m attracted to but the lax seating position of the 400 and extra power make me want it a tad more. My work commute is 60 miles round trip, I think I need to sit on them to decide.

    I have a Ninja 300 modified to bring its power to (nearly) Ninja 400 levels. I love the 400 in every way, but wish they would have kept the slightly more sporty stance of the 300 (though still not quite sporty enough). I tried out a couple 400s, and the handlebars are higher/closer to the rider than my 300, and the seat isn't as roomy for you to scoot back for a more aggressive tuck. I do love that the Ninja 400 is lighter than a stock 300, but it feels even lighter than it is (low center of gravity)! More electronic features are nice, the extra power is a trade-off for the Ninja 300s better MPG. I plan on keeping the Ninja 300 when I get my 400. ...and GROM, V-Star 250, CRF300L, GSXR-750, CBR1000rr, and Hayabusa! Each bike being superb and fun for different purposes, except the 2 baby Ninjas filling similar roles. Great video, BTW!

      I picked the naked because of the comfortable Riding position and looks. Also because it has no fairings it's easy to change the oil and filter...I've been Riding bikes for over 20 years now
      I was a little nervous about it not having enough power because its a 400 ....I am very excited about how powerful this bike is
      The low & mid range power is wonderful and that is just what you need for street Riding

    I’m a new rider considering my self a new and planning to buy my first bike , I love the idea of having the ninja 400 for all the different positive feedback but my heart already set to ninja Zx6R , I work on orthopedic I saw first hand dozen of motorcycle accident cases and in my mind it’s ok to buy the ZX6R because I know I would be careful and cautious about riding a motorcycle, what is your opinion about my dilemma here? Thanks in advance ✌️✌️

    • @rawlak
      @rawlak 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It doesn’t sound like a dilemma more like a statement. You should always buy a bike which will fit your skills not your heart. If you go after your heart I would kindly suggest you to buy also a wheelchair and coffin As I am certain that you will need one of them very soon. Look at Mark Marquez or Rossi. Do you think they have started to ride 500cc in their first or second season? And I think there were much better experienced riders starting with 125cc than you are right now.

      Ninja 400 is way better. I owned a 2018 R3 which is a fully faired mt03, the gearbox felt like junk Im the r3. The 400 has the tightest and nicest gearbox of any small sportbike and the most power, I had a cb300f also. Trust me. Ninja 400 is the last small bike you'll ever need

    • @Partnerthedog
      @Partnerthedog 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the ninja had the smallest windscreen though, but it has way more power to overcome the wind. I hit 110 on my ninja and wasn't even pushing it to the red.. The cb300f topped out at 100. The r3 I don't remember, maybe I hit 104 on it. Ninja is the best on the highway. And in town.. and on twisty roads. And looks the best

    I live in a city filled with potholes and lots of uphills/downhills, so I am wondering if this bike will do ok on roads like this for commuting or is it gonna be like hell everyday? I am considering getting an Enduro bike just because of this reason but the downside is that they are not comfortable to ride on high speeds so i would prefer the ninja if it's capable to handle shitty roads.
