    The original controversy over the ending(s) wasn't solely because of the three choices (although that was a large part of it). The game originally ended with Joker and co on the alien planet, leaving the Mass Relays destroyed and lots of plot holes and unanswered questions. The slideshows that explain how the galaxy coped/ rebuilt in the aftermath of all the destruction were added later, in response to those criticisms.
    In any event, thanks for sharing your first playthrough with us. It's the nearest we old hands can get to recapturing the experience we all had when playing this trilogy for the first time. It's always a privilege to see it through someone else's eyes, so thank you.

    1:00:57 I agree 100%. I would never have the ego to make a decision effecting the lives of the entire galaxy. I do think the game writers considered synthesis to be the optimum choice.

    • @donkeysunited
      @donkeysunited 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Yes, and I think they wanted Liara to be the optimum choice of romantic partner. But every decision you can make at the end affects the lives of the entire galaxy, just not as quickly.
      With Destroy, you have trapped most fleets in the Sol system without the knowledge of how to rebuild the relays or the resources to do the repairs. All races are now trapped in whatever systems they are in until they develop fast inter-system travel. All of the fleets in Sol will likely be starved for resources on their journey home (except for the Quarian liveships) and most will never reach their homes. It would make more sense to settle in Sol near Earth and the Citadel for however many decades it takes to develop the technology to quickly return home. That leaves the Salarians (usually) as the only major fleet not isolated in Sol so they could dominate or take over any systems their fleets are in. And eventually organics will create AI and synthetics again because that's what organics always do and we'll eventually get wiped out because that's what always happens and is what the Reapers were supposed to prevent. Choosing Destroy only delays the inevitable and represents a continuation of the same but with a massive disadvantage in the short to medium term. Or were the Reapers lying and they have a reserve fleet waiting in dark space to resume the harvest on the only organic races to ever almost defeat them?
      Paragon Control seems optimistic but I suspect Shep will eventually become corrupted by the Reapers and they'll become an enemy to the galaxy once more. Renegade Control is already an unstoppable dictatorship. Or were the Reapers lying and they immediately crush Shep's entity and resume their harvest?
      Synthesis seems great theoretically but there is so little information given on what a synthesised future would mean. Is it a shared, hive mind or does everyone stay indivdual? Are they still free to attack each other or is it a forced galactic community? Can you keep secrets from others? Or were the Reapers lying and now all organics are infected with Reaper technology?
      Despite all that, I usually take Synthesis, rarely Destroy, never Control. If I have to make a choice that affects the entire galaxy, then I might as well take a massive leap of faith and use the opportunity to go for the big one: full evolution, which is the end goal of all intelligent organic life.
      The sequels will probably use Destroy as it's the easiest to create more stories from and as the galaxy will feel most familiar and as it was the only one that Shep could survive. I'm curious to see how they'll explain their ability to repair the relays.

      @@donkeysunited In the Synthesis ending I saw the scene where husk gained feelings. He is trapped in his body and he's looks like dead flesh. After that, I decided to never choose this ending. Plus - Shepard 100% dies in this ending.
      In the new Mass Effect trailer, where Liara is walking in the snow, we see a dead reaper in the distance. This means that the canon ending is the destruction of the reapers.

    • @saviourself687
      @saviourself687 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Destruction - Andersen's choice, and realistically the only way to break the cycle.
      Control - Illusive man's choice, and while Shepherd initially has control over them, it would only be a matter of time before conflict broke out and the reapers showed up to police it.
      Synthesis - Catalysts choice. Catalyst says it has been tried and failed because it couldn't be forced. Shepherd allows it to be forced for all organics, a disastrously nonconsenual invasion. Further, who knows if you have free will once the entire universe is collectively bonded under Catalyst. Imo, the absolute worst choice.
      Defiance - Shepherd's choice, defiance in the face of being forced to choose. Technically a loss (the reapers win and the cutscene shows Liara's message to the next cycle), but the galaxy lives (and dies) on it's own terms.

    There is no wrong or right ending. It all depends on how you (or Shepard) see it. After all it is a role playing game. My renegade FemShep always chooses the destroy-ending. My Paragon Shep either synthesis or control. I would choose destroy every time if it doesnt come with the cost of EDI and the Geth, proving that organics see AI's not as equal race. Personally, I think control the most interesting because it is exactly the oposite of what we wanted the whole time. But the paragon AI-Shepard's ending speech differs from renegade AI-Shepard's final speech. And I love that little detail.

    Congrats on finishing it. Now the post-Mass Effect sadness can begin. But you didn't get to see why there was such a controversy surrounding the ending. Originally, it was MUCH worse.
    Glad you brought Liara for this, because the goodbye at 29:30 is a lot less impactful without your love interest.
    And your thought process (destroying the Reapers has been the plan since day one) was the same as mine my first time through. I still choose that the most, with Synthesis a close second. But aside from picking them just to see what happens, I never choose either of the other two (yes, two; there's a hidden fourth choice).

  • @kylethompson3008
    @kylethompson3008 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    There is no wrong choice. There are pros and cons to each. With destroy though the cons outweigh the pros by far. Obviously EDI and all the Geth are dead but now there's no Reapers to keep the Leviathans from enslaving the galaxy again which they've already begun to do. Also as much as I love the Krogan they don't know how to keep their population in check. Wrex is getting up there in age and once he's gone there's no telling who will take control if it's even one person at all. Either way they will keep reproducing until every planet they colonize is all used up and inhospitable. They will have to conquer more. That's what they did before the genophase. If Reapers are still around they will know they have to fix their ways. Either way this is one of my favorite game series and I've replayed it so many times I've lost count

    It was a pleasure experiencing the game through your eyes for the first time. I would point out, the mission for the whole series was to end the reaper threat, which is not necessarily the same as destroy the reapers.
    Control for me is the ethically and morally least bad choice. As you rightly pointed out synthesis changes everyone without people being free to choose. Destroy commits genocide on the geth, that's a heavy price when there are other options that don't wipe out an entire civilisation. Would the geth agree to sacrifice themselves to end the Reapers? I think yes if that was the only option, but otherwise they would not, does Shepard have the right to make that choice for them? Same goes for EDI. I think Shepard and Zaal Koris are the only 2 organics in the whole galaxy that would not be perfectly happy to kill all geth to end the war, maybe Tali as well. Control is risky, because what happens in 1,000, years, 10,000 years, 100,000 years, will the Shep-reapers still be a benign influence? But for me the immediate wrongs of synthesis and destroy outweigh the future possible wrong of control.

    If you haven't yet, go back and watch a compilation of the original endings side by side by side. There are almost no differences aside from the color. The Normandy is marooned on some planet somewhere, cut to credits. As the ending to *a* game in a continuing series, I wouldn't have had a problem with that. But, as *the* ending to a trilogy... no. There's no closure with your crew, the entire fleets of many alien cultures are marooned in the Sol system with no way to sustain them until the relays are repaired, if ever? The Legendary Edition makes the extended endings default. Even those weren't enough for some fans, but I thought it was a good compromise, in that at least they are all distinct now, with their own voiceovers.

      Highly, highly disagree with your opinion. I've debated this to death with so many people, and synthesis is the best option if you want peace in the galaxy and you want to preserve life. It's a fallacy that the mission was to destroy the Reapers, the mission was to stop them, in our pea sized human brains that could only be destroy until presented with a different option. One of the things that prove our inability to think about this in any different way is explained by the Starchild, Shepard (representing all life) think we're at war with the Reapers and despise everything they are, but they hold no hatred for any living being, organic or synthetic. Ying and Yang, there is a balance in all things even on a massive scale such as this. Consent holds no value here, when it's about letting everyone live for future generations, stopping the Leviathans from taking over once more and so much more

    This is known as the "Perfect Destroy" ending. I've lost count of all the let's plays I've watched of this game, both the original version and the Legendary Edition. Of all those, not one, not a single one, chose the "Control" ending. One or two chose Synthesis, and one chose Refuse (an option that wasn't in the original release, but was added by the Citadel DLC). All the rest chose Destroy.
    What really sucks is that the Catalyst may have been wrong when it said the peace won't last. The peace between the Quarians and the Geth is unprecedented. But the galaxy won't know how long it could last because the Geth, like EDI, were destroyed.
    In the original release of the game, there were just the three endings, and the game ended after the Normandy crashes on the planet and Joker walks out with one or two others. It's also possible, depending on what you do or don't do, that you won't have all of the ending options, and it's also possible that the Destroy ending is even worse. Fan outcry was so great that they released the Citadel DLC which, along with all of the fun stuff with the Shepard clone story and other Citadel activities, added an epilogue for all four possible endings (the part between 1:09:40 and the credits).
    I admit I chose Synthesis my first playthrough, but I certainly understand why many people don't. It will be interesting how they handle the different choices in the next Mass Effect game. Will they go with a "canon" ending? Or will they somehow accommodate all three endings other than Refuse? I guess we'll just have to wait and see....

    I am a big fan of this series, and while you can never go back and experience it for the first time, you can watch other people experience it for the first time!
    As for Andromeda, it is pretty controversial, but all the prerelease stuff for the new game suggests that it will be integrated into the new Mass Effect they're developing. I liked it a lot, despite its flaws, but it's a gigantic game that has a LOT of side content in it. It's kind of like Mass Effect 1 on steroids. It has the best combat of the series and a lot of cool moments in it. I like the companions, but they're definitely not up to the level of the original series.
    If you do decide to play Andromeda, I would definitely encourage you to focus on the main story, companion loyalty missions, and whatever side content seems interesting to you. You don't have to do all the little fetch quests, and unlike the trilogy, you're not punished or miss out if you move forward on priority or main story missions. You get locked out of very little, and you can play it in the order you want.
    It was a fun ride watching you experience these games, and I am glad you loved it so much! Mass Effect is one of my favorite game series of all time, and I am trying to be patient for the next game. The new Dragon Age game will have to hold me over, hopefully, whenever that comes out. :)

It has some nice moral choices but Warhammer 40k is not everyone's cup of tea and the leveling system is quite tedious here and there but I saw you play age of empire so you have the tactical thinking and it can provide 100+ hours of content.

    This wasn't their original ending. It was supposed to be about the dark energy that was discovered on Haestrom causing the sun to die. That is what is upsetting some of the fans. The ending we got was a rushed ending. The dark energy story needed more time. If you are interested in the writing that went into Mass Effect I assembled some interviews into playlist ME.doc.

    Ive have played through this many many times. Honestly never did control ending or the "do nothing" ending. The very first one I did was destroy and afterwards i pretty much have chosen synthesis.
    Most people I have seen play this game say "who am I to make that choice for everyone" on the synthesis ending - well yeah but you make a choice for everyone in this case regardless of decision. If you destroy then you still make a decision to end a whole race of beings immediately. Thats also not our call i believe. It is not our call to do anything but if presented with 3 bad options and 1 of them has everyone survive and maybe create utopia in the process? Im good with that :p
    Destroy does do the best job of paving the way for a possible sequel or return game as the story feels like it just concludes fully with Synthesis or Control.
    Overall great games though. I believe the story by itself is good, but the characters brings it to life and the world is very well crafted. And the music makes it very cinematic. Glad you enjoyed the ride! :D

    Mechanical beings already have awareness thanks to Legion and are working together with Organics so that was BS the child was spouting , the only solution is destroy the Reapers and watch the Fireworks at the End.🙏

    I think you were deliberately being explorative of the conversations in this game , maybe for our benefit ,and I found myself wishing you were more ruthless as the paths you take effected the strength in battle of the characters, so I think it would be entertaining for you to run through it off camera, so you can swear and have more character "romances", being just honest to yourself and going with your gut instincts.👍 Have a well deserved come down first.😘😘

    Synthesis sounds good until you realize that would be the end of evolution. We would spend the rest of eternity without the hope of getting any better. Given the chance, I think we would find something better than synthesis. If we never stop evolving, we always have a future. Nice playthrough of a wonderful game.

      Evolution isn't constrained to DNA -based lifeforms. It's a force of nature. Environment will dictate the propagation of some lines of causality and termination of others no matter what shape they take. Synthesis doesn't drop the universe into absolute entropy, so diversity of form remains and therefore survival of the fittest form in any given environment at any given time.

    Easily one of my favorite endings to a game, realizing that the entire reaper army was simply the mathematical solution of a machine intelligence. It makes sense givin how destructive and uncaring it is, it not only transformed the creators but millions of civilizations and would have continued to do so indefinitely.

    Shepard is a cyborg restored by reaper technology, yet he/she lives, only if you choose destroy option. Makes you wonder if star brat was lying all along. Indoctrination theory is best explanation imo.

    There is a "Happy Ending" mod that changes several elements of the ending. It removes the Catalyst A.I. sequence, it keeps EDI and the Geth alive, as well as adding a sequence for Shepard's rescue from the Citadel, and has the eulogy aboard the Normandy being for Adm Anderson with Shepard and EDI in attendance. I much prefer this moded version to the Bioware version.

    Loved watching you play mass effect , just sad that you picked the worst option (cause eventually there will be synthetic life again and eventually probably something like reaper situation will happen again , not to mention you wiped out the geth and EDI) , synthesis is the best option (and that's why it's locked behind a certain amount of war effort points)

      He does not. It is not Shepard. "Through his death, I was created. Through my birth, his thoughts are freed. They guide me now, give me reason, direction." It is just an AI which uses his memories.
