At the center of pretty much all film discourse lies Rotten Tomatoes. From its humble beginnings as a simple review-aggregator to becoming a titan within the world of entertainment, it has always been divisive. Today we're taking a look at not only the flaws with the website but also the many ways the public have been misinformed about how it even works.

Regardless of your opinion on their criticisms for certain movies I don't think they should be attacked for having different thoughts regarding certain films. It's really cringe seeing people demonize critics over simply having a different opinion than them while also managing to have the audacity to call them "toxic" and that their opinions "don't matter" when those very criticisms can be thrown back at them for attacking people online for not liking something they themselves like, they can't even see the irony of their own situation. It's sad seeing the internet slowly devolve into a toxic echo chamber filled to the brim with nothing but the same thoughts and opinions and the fact that so many people online (specifically TH-camrs) are encouraging stuff like this worries me to no end.

What I'm saying is: don't get angry about a different movie opinion and don't harass people because of it.

    *BEFORE YOU GUYS COMMENTS!*
This video is most likely about how people overreact to sites like Rotten Tomatoes and how people misuse, and misunderstand on how we should view criticism on not just RT but any criticism whether online or in general discussion about the things we like vs the things that are good.
*PLEASE WATCH THE VIDEO BEFORE COMMENTING* this has been a recurring issue on *Cartoonshi* channel where whenever he uploads a video that is long with genuine discussion on the topics he covers, people comment without finishing the video to say their own opinion ends up being redundant or think that Cartoonshi is on the same page as them when there's actually more to this than meets the eye.

@@saku9177 I've never gotten it either. The only times I think it's actually warranted are when you already have an informed opinion of the movie (ex. say I watched the Mario Movie and I comment on a TH-cam video about flaws with the movie with my own talking points about flaws) or.... nope that is the only situation that comes to mind which isn't the situation a lot of comments fall into. It's probably just because they want a higher chance of getting their comment liked since a comment posted 2 minutes after the video is posted has a generally much higher shot than a comment posted 2 hours after. Far be it from me to stand on a pedestal and say I don't like when comments I make do numbers or that I'm better than others for watching the video before actually commenting but I just prefer to make it a good amount into the video before getting the thoughts out there.

One of my least favorite things is when someone will use the Critic side of the Tomato Meter and go "well it has to be a good movie because it has a *insert number above 80"* to validate their liking of a movie but then those same dipshits will turn around and say "wow, another dumb critic moment. This is why you should never listen to them" the moment they see a low critic score on a movie they liked. I feel like I'm in Looneyville whenever this happens and it's one of the many reminders that the internet is many things and one of them is a showcase of the cycle of hypocrisy. The discourse surrounding the Mario movie and people castigating critics for their opinions last year was pretty bad, but for me, the online discourse around “The Sound Of Freedom” took the cake as the worst online film discourse of 2023. Not to get too political, but the discussion on it was so bad that it made the Mario movie discourse seem mild by comparison, and that’s saying a lot. “Sound Of Freedom” has about the same aggregate percentage as the Mario movie on Rotten Tomatoes, and defenders of the film basically shamed people who were even slightly critical of the film and accused them of being PDF’s, or something similar. On top of that, they tried to hide behind the excuse that the movie wasn’t overtly political (which may well be correct), but it doesn’t take away from the fact that most people who promoted the film, whether if it was the makers of the film, conservative online influencers or news pundits and politicians used the film to solidify some of their irrational beliefs.

A problem I've personally found with RT is how it's designed to be as rapid-fire as possible. You click on a movie, it shows you both the scores and the critics/audience consensus, and right below it shows you like 5 similar movies to click on, or a list of upcoming movies on the side, all with shiny percentages to grab your attention. It tries to make you go from one movie to the next as fast as possible, making you focus only on the bigger numbers rather than the reviews that are aaaaall the way down at the end of the page. All of it makes you (say it with me, kids!) inflate the scores' actual importance.

The problem with people not forming their own opinion and being more flexible than a performer at Cirque du Soleil isn't even entirely located with film critique, really it happens everywhere in entertainment from games to books to music. What logically should happen is people form their own opinion and engage in healthy discussions over the pros and cons of the product and let bygones be bygones and agree to disagree but that just doesn't happen. Its all about completely owning the opposition and trying to belittle and devalue their opinion until you achieve total victory when that simply can never happen.

Just remember that Critics, like Audiences, are not a monolith, and while yes some are studio knob slopping hacks, many others are some of the most passionate people out there. RT just aggregates all the reviews. Nothing more, nothing less.

Pretty great video. As someone who enjoys something like the FNAF Movie, it legit upsets me that so many FNAF Fans can't except that people have different opinions on media. I've also seen some movies that most people enjoy and I come out not liking it, but I at least don't feel personaly attacked when I see a different opinion online. I just look at it, say to myself, "I respectfully disagree", and I move on. I wish some of these people on the internet would do the same.

    Two additional points:
    1. If all critics reviewing a movie give it a 7 out of 10, it'll have 100% on the Tomatometer despite the fact that critics say it's passable. It's a fault with making all reviews binary.
    2. Not all reviews on the site go for a binary thumbs up or thumbs down. Some don't have scores attached to them, meaning someone has to decipher that, which can be difficult on some reviews. But even the ones that do have scores don't have the same weight attached to the same values. Is 6 out of 10 positive or negative? Depends on the critic.

I still remember when the FNaF movie came out and I kept hearing extremes from both side saying either the movie was the best ever or the worst possible thing. Meanwhile I was sitting there like "It's the FNaF movie, of course I'm gonna see it myself out of curiosity alone." Still had a fun time with it, wasn't perfect naturally, but it wasn't really bad either, just a fun time

Honestly watch a movie AND THEN look at the reviews/tomato meter. I often do this once I see a film, make my opinion and see if it relates to others or not. But truthfully, do whatever you want. Make you own opinions, RT is not gospel, and honestly the people you watch mostly aren't either. They can't tell you to like or dislike something, make your own opinion and respect others. Easy as that. Another great vid Cartoonshi

that’s why i prefer something like metacritic over rotten tomatoes. on top of the fact that it’s better at accumulating different people’s opinions so as such the review score is more accurate to the film’s quality, it’s also a lot more nuanced because of the fact that instead of a movie simply being considered good or bad, it can also be considered average so as such there isn’t that massive divide of quality.

I always think of review scores and RT scores as either film recommendations or a sign that it might not be up to par. Movies I've liked have had appalling RT scores and movies that I strongly disliked had glowing reviews. I'm open to watching just about anything, that's the fun of being a fan of film. A big RT score is really just a little reminder in the back of my head that, hey, maybe this movie might be worth my time. I'm not losing sleep over the Mario Movie's 59%

My frame of reference for seeing a movie is imdb. If it had at least a 7 for a month plus beyond the initial release date, I'll consider seeing it in theaters. If it's an 8 on opening weekend yeah that's a good sign.
I've learned that if a movie is a 7/10 there's a good chance it's worth watching. TV is way different. Anything below an 8/10 is usually crap.

From my perspective, rotten tomatoes score doesn't mean that much, sometimes critics will hate a movie you like, like a movie you hate, same with the audience, that's simply because people always have different standards and preferences. I think rotten tomatoes score shouldn't really be paid attention to, instead as cartoonshi said search reviews from people you actually trust, or see different perspectives and arguments from why a movie could be good or bad. Or just ignore other's opinions and watch the movie if you're interested

For a modern example I would go for Tera Fairy, Choice Specs, Helping Hand, Flutter Mane Moonblast (yes I am fully aware that not only have I completely veered off topic but also referenced something that people would need to play the current gen to get. Just wanted to -showcase how little I go outside- talk about Pokemon since it was brought up.

There's a problem with the scoring of Like/Dislike that you can't get a sense of the film like you can a scale of say 1 to 10. Not because its an objective measure to be taken seriously and worth anger when people give a wrong score, but because you can map out general reception. Is it an average of 6 because everybody says it's a 6 or is it an average of 6 because of a decent spread between 8 and 4? One is a very bland game and the other has a niche. Are the outcomes very polarizing between people thinking its the best ever and those that see it as the absolute worst?
You can get a far better gauge on audience and reaction than "we asked people what they thought of Mario movie and 9 out of 10 responses were 'yes"'

I've kinda made a formula when it comes to movies on that site that dictate how I may view them.
If both critics and audiences love the movie, chances are the movie itself is good.
If both hate it, chances are that the movie is bad.
If the critics hate it but the audience loves it, then it's probably a fun movie that isn't anything amazing.
If the audience hates it but the critics loves it.....okay you're on your own for this one.
Now obviously there are plenty of exceptions to these, but I like to view this more as a guideline rather than strict rules. These are simply the first thing that's on my mind when I am looking at the scores, and my view on the movie can very easily be changed based on numerous factors

The way I see it is films are made for film fans, not critics. With critics it’s their literal job to watch the next big film looking for criticisms, so automatically they’re not going to enjoy the film the same way someone who’s watching the film for actual entertainment will. So whenever fans decide whether a film is good or bad based of what the critics have to say, it’s essentially tainting their personal movie experience. Critics watch films not because they want to, but because they have to post about it, fans watch films because they actually want to.

People really need to just need to form their own opinion and not need to feel validated for having different takes. Rotten tomatoes hate has always been super stupid when the number is super oversimplified. Everyone is different and everyone has different opinions, critics just say what they like or dislike in a very constructive way. The audience isnt right nor is the critic because it's always been subjective. If enjoying something fully objectively existed then movie or ANY content discussion would be fucking boring as hell.
