  • The G444 has arrived. Seems like a good saw, but it does have a problem that I will have to deal with Holzfforma to fix.
    This saw can be found at amzn.to/2ElOJ7w
    UPDATE I have heard back from Holzfforma and the replacement tensioner is on the way.

    Just like the 044, they were one of the best designs ever made by Stilh, I had a partner back in the 80s that carried those. They were light and could be carried all day long without breaking your back.

    Love this video sir. Informative, satisfying and fun to watch. And either the saw is light or you're just a tough ol bird.

    I've had similar issues on others series of saws from this company with the supplied adjuster in the kits, the replacements that were ordered were of better quality and worked and functioned as they should. For some reason it seems the as supplied adjusters that I received in the kits are of a cheaper quality or from a different vendor than the replacement parts. Either way the saws were still of good quality. I elected to just purchase the replacements from huztl cause they were just a couple dollars at the time rather than go back and forth with emails a pictures and dealing with the time difference. If it was a bigger issue I most definitely would contact customer service but that's just me.
    Good video though

      True enough. Ordering a 3 dollar part with 5 dollar shipping still makes it cheaper than buying the part from a local stihl dealer as well. Granted the dealer may be able to get it faster. Of course don't mention it's for a clone or they throw a fit LOL. I have plenty of saws to use in the mean time so dont mind emailing through the time change.

      @@DIYwithUncleCy A Blue Stihl clone can hardly be passed off as a fake so I'd give some leeway to that saw if I where a dealer. I actually like the blue but respect original colors for replacement parts. The problem arises when people build the clones and put the Stihl Logo on it. That is a major No No IMHO. I love my 066 that I built but I'm fine with it being Hutzl and I will always present it as such. Chinese clones have burned many people, it's really bad in the guitar world.

    Hi Cy, this is one of the only thing that I have seen other people have problems with. They are made out of a little too soft steel. If you continue to have problems, you might have to put a OEM part in it. The one on my G660 feels a little weak. So I always grab the bar and help it so not to over work the mechanism. Especially with a long bar. You just started cranking on it with out helping it and holding up on the bar. If you do that with the new part the same thing will happen again.
    Just a little friendly advice. 😀😀
    Your friend Al.

    • @DIYwithUncleCy

      Had another commenter said he had that problem and bought the replacement part from them and it was of much higher quality. It is not unusual for companies to put parts from different sources into their equipment then sell parts from yet another source, I think that may be the case here.

    I am planning to buy one of these saws. I'll get an OEM chain adjuster for it. Same with the bar bolts. It seems a lot of these saws have this issue. Not a big deal the OEM tensioner is around 25 bucks.

    I'd love to eventually get one of these big saws to go with my small collection. I mostly look at older vintage saws since you can get a lot of saw for a decent price. But there are just some older units you can't use as everyday drivers since parts are few and far between. My MS251 is a great all-rounder but you eventually need something like this to work on that one tree that's just too big to use your normal tools on. Plus if something breaks I can put an OEM Stihl part in it to replace it. That and the blue looks better than the typical orange/white look. :)

  • @DonQuixotedeKaw
    @DonQuixotedeKaw 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not that it applies in this case, but on some saws with gear drive tensioners, there's a small plastic plate keeping the gears engaged.
    The plate flexes too much after some age/wear-n-tear. They're pretty easy to duplicate in sheet steel. Then they work like new again, as long as no one has tried and tried to get tension,
    (probably with the nuts or other bar holding device too tight for adjusting) only to strip the gears.

    • @DIYwithUncleCy
      @DIYwithUncleCy  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      True but this one was actually installed improperly and so the first time I put pressure on it it stripped the cogs on the gears. The replacment has held up quite well and was identical to the one I took out. But you are correct on the plastic part failing to put propper pressure on the gears in some cases.

    Take the tensioner from the one with the busted starter housing while you wait for the replacement parts. Overall quality on these looks to be improving, but perhaps hit or miss (more hit than miss). Having hands on, how do you think they'll do for longevity? Assuming they aren't being abused, just used. I guessing alloys on the major bits are different from Stihl, but if they are meeting some minimum level and are lubricated they should be reasonable. Good looking spectator in the background (the dog :) ) Merry Christmas.

    Looks to be a good saw if you want decent power but don't want the weight of the 660? I'd be looking to run a 24/25" bar for some oak and ash felling mainly. I've got a 62cc Chinese saw already, but it's a Amazon 'special'. These look better in terms of overall quality.

    • @DIYwithUncleCy

    I'm looking to buy either the 388 or this 444. Other than the air filter differences and the slight power increase the G444 has, what are the differences? Which one do you like better Cy? Keep in mind that power is important to me as I do most of my cutting at 6,600' and some at around 8,500' above sea level here in Colorado.

    • @DIYwithUncleCy

      Honestly they are nearly identical in the hands. The 388 may be slightly heavier. Never thought about the altitude thing, next time I go out to my sisters place I will have to take a few saws and see how they perform. She lives at 8500 feet.

I found it while looking for parts for my blown Husky 570. Sadly all they have for the 570 is an air filter, but since the 575 was essentially the same saw they have all kinds of goodies for that. :)

    Is Farmertec the new Yuzhoukee? I can't find that brand anymore, but notice that they both use blue plastic in their saws. Chain tensioners being stripped seems like a common problem. I have two name brand saws I have to fix the tensioner on (and it's likely those parts are made in China) even though the saws are supposedly made in Germany, and America/Japan and cost me big dollars.

    • @DIYwithUncleCy
      @DIYwithUncleCy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No two separate companies. Yuzhokee only sells on eBay. And yes tensioners are one of the most common things to fail on chainsaws no matter who made them. At least they are not difficult to replace most of the time.

    • @DIYwithUncleCy
      @DIYwithUncleCy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chain tensioners on these saws fail, no way around it. It is a rare thing to have one fail out of the box though. And I blame myself a little on this I may not have had the Bar nuts loose enough. So I would not put too much concern on that, besides I think the replacement part from them is less than $3 plus shipping which will still be cheaper than getting a Stihl part locally. As for the mill The one I have from them is pretty solid, I will be getting it back out this spring too. And their price is right too.

    • @DIYwithUncleCy
      @DIYwithUncleCy  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Their QC has been quite good with everything they have sent me or that I have ordered. The G660 problems were due to the freight company. This is the first time I have gotten one with a problem. I have had others comment about issues that they have had, however this company has sold A LOT of saws and the complaints have been relatively few. Any newly released product is bound to have issues or there is always the possibility of a bad run of parts. To judge a company by a mistake without trying to contact them to rectify it is not a good practice. And actually I e-mailed them and sure enough the part has already been shipped. So their customer service wins the day. Out of the few Chinese companies I have gotten to deal with they seem to have one of the better QC programs. Are they perfect? No but overall they have more wins than loses I think.

    • @DIYwithUncleCy
      @DIYwithUncleCy  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Really depends on the job needing to be done. For limbing the top handle saws are my preferred go to or a small saw like my MS171. But for felling the bigger saws are nicer and with the big saws the verdict is still out, as I have several recently acquired saws that I haven't gotten to use much. For carving I have recently been using my little Tanaka a lot but have some others ordered that ,y be replacing it for that use. SO really its hard to say what the "best" saw is.

      Oh yes absolutly. which is why I sharpen any new chain to "MY" specs before use. Not all new chains come at correct angles so I check them for proper grinding angle. This one had the correct angle and the teeth that I looked at were sharpened properly. No I am well aware of this fact and check all my new chains. The wood I was cutting in this video was rock maple and it was from the base of the tree, which means a lot of swirling grain not easy for anysaw with the sharpest chain.
