For the sorghum it’s called pronutro but you need to add more water, it’s terrible like how you had it
To be fair, it was not horrible. Even though I mixed it too thick. I would definitely try it again!!!
Thank you for watching and commenting!
The soldiers are issued with knife/fork/spoon set (pikstel) and mess tin container (varkpan). We Saffas love coffee so not sure what is going on there. The fruit bar is probably to be eaten on the go! We used to get pro nutro instead of that sorghum crap! nut butter is usually peanut butter. porridges usually need sugar so not really recommended.
Thank you for the information! Also, thank you for your service!
I appreciate you watching and commenting!
Greetings from SA.I did my compulsary miliyary service late 80s.Reason why eating utencils are abscent from the ratpack is that each trooper get issued with a pikstel that you use. This ratpack only short a pack of dogbiscuits if you ask me.Good work brother i enjoyed this video.Did subscribe and look forward to more contents.Keep save !
Thank you for your service! I am humbled by the kind words! Thank you for subscribing!
Also in regards to the plastic bags you add your porridge or drink. add water about a cup. then tear the bag down the middle and twist and tie. when thihsty tear the corner off and drink. trust me we used them
WOW!!!! More power to you my friend! They were so thin, all I could think was these things would bust open and then your drink is in the dirt!
@@RationNerd lol they often did to be honest. i myself used to put the chewing gum and sweets in one bag.
whats better than a ration nerd video to end the weekend? nothing i can think of.
That is VERY kind of you my friend!
Thank you for watching and commenting!
In South Africa we call that sorgam porrage "Matebella pap" as a kid my mom used to make it alot for breakfast. Its been a while since i ate some. But here in south africa some poeple also eat it with like meat stew. In Swaziland it is a verry big deal they eat it with everything
To be honest, it actually has a good taste! It was just a consistency thing for me. If it were ground a little more coarse, I think it would have been very enjoyable. I appreciate the information! I have learned a lot from the people around the world that comment on my videos. I think that is one of the coolest parts of this hobby. Getting to talk to all kinds of people, from all over the place and learn lots of cool things!
Thank you for watching and commenting!!!
Just a quick Tip If it is not Halal then it's not Official SANDF. All our MRE's have been Halal since 2010.
Howdy from Ontario Canada! That’s a hell of a ton of food, I’m will you on the coffee-put some good stuff in for the folks in the field. The old US MRE type II instant is still my personal favourite
Pretty interesting menu items, never saw sorghum porridge in any other ration. Also the first time I’ve seen a lactose free product in a ration.
The oak biscuits remind me of the British ORP biscuits
That lunch main was one of the best looking pasta mains I’ve ever seen-nice change from the Chef Boyardee US pasta mains. Too bad there was so little chutney, likely would have been good with the biryani-there was a ton of chicken in there!
Rooibos tea is a caffeine free herbal tea so it’s going to have a really light non-tea flavour.
The fruit cubes sorta look like Turkish delight
Overall great review, I’ll have to find more of you videos 😊
Hey! I appreciate you coming along for the ride! This was a ton of fun. Just check out my channel, I have a bunch of other reviews. But be warned, the further back you go....the editing gets a little sketchy! LOL
Thank you for watching and commenting!
Rooibos (/ˈrɔɪbɒs/ ROY-boss; Afrikaans: [ˈroːibɔs] ⓘ, lit. 'red bush'), or Aspalathus linearis, is a broom-like member of the plant family Fabaceae that grows in South Africa's Fynbos biome.
The leaves are used to make a caffeine free herbal tea that is called rooibos (especially in Southern Africa), bush tea, red tea, or redbush tea (predominantly in Great Britain).
Great information and thank you!
I appreciate you watching and leaving an informative comment!
@@RationNerd You need to try it again, but let it steep for a good 10 mins before you drink it. Brings out the flavour and it just tastes better. It's really good for you as well, full of anti-oxidants.
Rooibos tea is pronounced “roy-bose” 😉. And just a bit of background on it, Rooibos is an herbal tea, and doesn’t use any true tea leaves. That’s why it didn’t taste like tea.
I did not know that. I assumed since it said tea, that it would have some kind of tea leaf base. I was very wrong! It still did not have much of a flavor, which was a bummer. However, I would not have been so hard on it if I knew it was more of an herbal tea rather than a standard tea blend. I appreciate the info! When I get another SA ration, I will be better informed!
Thank you for watching and commenting!
@ Hell yeah dude! 🤘🏼
@@RationNerdrooibos tea needs longer to soak to get the tea color and taste.
@@CBD-LIFE I am learning as I go my friend. The great thing about TH-cam is that I get to talk to people like you who have some insight into certain items that I am clueless about! It is a fun learning experience for me!!!
Thank you for watching and commenting!
Came to the comment section looking for aomeone to talk about the sorghum paste he created... I would have tried to to make an ash cake out of that pile of grain. Definitely not my first idea of a breakfast cereal. Thanks for a great review!
I too, really wanted to bake or pan fry that dough! I appreciate the kind words!
Thank you for watching and commenting!
Great video bro, keep up the good work! (FYI, the tea is pronounced 'Roy-Bos' lol)
Thank you Grafting! I appreciate the support! And the help with pronunciation!
Thank you for watching and commenting!
Thanks as always for the video
Thank you for the support Jeff! Be well my friend!
I told you a couple of videos back on a premiere the SA ration coffee is shit lol. Keep it up RN loving your content👍🏼👍🏼
Thank you! You did warn me, but I am a glutton for punishment!!!!!!
Thank you for watching and commenting!!!
Almost 3k brother! Congrats
Thank you my friend! I am working as hard as I can to keep up with getting one good review out per week!
You will REALLY want to look for next weeks video! Maybe even catch it on the premier! It will be a rare one! Not even Steve has had one of these as far as I can see!!!!!!
Thank you for watching and commenting!
@@RationNerd you're welcome. I look forward to next Sundays premiere!
Somewhat surprised that there are no water purification tabs in there, given the climate in South Africa.
I was surprised as well to be honest. I am wondering if Ration Tech, who I corresponded with was just pulling my chain about this being a genuine SA military issue ration!?!?!
Thank you for watching and commenting!
It was normally supplied by the squad medic back in the day, we used to carry them in the range plastic containers that carried rpg7 fuses.
@ I guess that makes sense, unless something happens to that guy! Yikes!
We did get water purification powder in the MRE's that where issued from 2010. However this ration isnt offcial SANDF. As i told RationNerd our MRE's are Halal. If it isnt Halal its not official. Many of our soldiers dont eat Pork hence the need for Halal.
@@AndrewConstandse Any clue where I can get an official SANDF Rat Pack??
Damn it I missed another premiere 😢 welcome back RN!
Thank you my friend! I understand, we all have stuff to do! Thank you for the support brother!
Nice.
Thank you my friend!
Great review, Great Fun, Thanks 😃
Thank you for joining me!
I appreciate you watching and commenting!
Reason there are no utensils is we are issued a Pikstel. This is a spoon fork and knife combo that we get with our dixies. Also most of us just carried a spoon in our webbing. so no need for plastic utensils
Thank you for the info! It is helpful to know these bits of facts. I assume most soldiers have some sort of mess kit. I guess what you are issued varies from nation to nation.
Thank you for watching and commenting!
Just for saying nut butter you should have got tuna lol hugs from uk
Rofl!
LMAO!!!!!
BIG NUT BUTTER HUGS FROM THE USA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"Roy-Boss' ... not exactly, but the closest English speakers will come to the pronunciation. It is a herbal tea. Literal translation is 'red bush'.
Rooibos is eally healthy for you but it is not a traditional tea. We love it. Like the sorghum porridge, it is something we have from the day we are weened. That coffee was a national disgrace. I'm sure the troops take their own 'moerkoffee' with them.
Well said and all true.
I appreciate the help with how to say the name. I goof around with everything to have fun, but to be honest I really enjoy learning and talking to people from all over the world!
Thank you for watching and commenting!
@@RationNerd Seriously though, Publix sells Rooibos, get some and give it a try. Was recently in the U.S myself, drank it every night. Publix has it, if they're in your state?
@@thepatriotsrage661 They are not in my state, but I am going to look around and see if any stores in my area have it in stock!
Hey..That Rooibos is SA own home made tea.
And when you sick it realy helps having some.
Those bags do work, but there is a trick to them. You make the cold drinks and the porridge in them. The new coffee is crap though.
I am surprised that those bags work for much of anything. They are so thin and not sealed well on the sides. I wish they would make those just a little stronger for the troops. I can imagine, you only get two drinks....what happens if your isotonic spills out the side. Its water for you then.
Thank you for watching and commenting!
If you have sauce left in the tray no one would fault you for grabbing a piece of bread after you finished lol
That is a great idea. But to be honest, at the end of most of my reviews, especially the 24 hour ones....I am stuffed!!!
Thank you for watching and commenting!
@RationNerd no probs that was some huge mains though lol
This is a pretty big ration. Too bad the coffee sucked. I'm not much into curry. I really try to like it. Just not my thing. Your review was great. ❤😎
Thank you my brother!!!!!!! Those mains were off the hook good! I hope you are doing well! Shoot me an email soon my friend!
yes i am a vetrian kpl in sandf intake of 1987 /88
old ratpacks is mutch better there as 5 diferent ones 1 for eatch day
Thank you for your service Louis! Even though I am from the USA, you still deserve all of our thanks. Be well and thank you for watching!
hahahaha as a South African my heart sank a little when you made the porridge, alot of people here referee to it by its brand name "pronutro". you needed to added alot more liquidy basically a runneir versions of grits. best enjoyed heated up and with milk. another way we have it ,add alot of cold milk (why protein if you want) and drink it as a shake.
the texture isnt for everyone as its meant to be a little "grainy" personaly my favorite.
haha but yes you basically turned it into a bread dough 🤣
To be honest, even though I may have made it too thick it was still pretty good. Not the best thing ever but still very filling!.
Thank you for watching and commenting!
Not a special forces ration not even a military ration it’s sold by a private company that makes a few components for the military rations but not supply full kits. We also call them rat packs.
Information over here is limited. I did have a lengthy conversation with Ration Tech. I also see SA milsurp rations for sale that have the Ration Tech logo right on the front of the bag. Are you in SA by any chance? If you can get me a chance to buy a real Rat Pack I am all for it!!!!!!
ration.nerd@gmail.com
Thank you watching and commenting!
@Bre Funny. Looking at a military surplus website based out of South Africa, there are more Ration Tech brown bag rations than any other ration. Are you sure your information is correct?
Do what you fo. 🍻
Not sure I know what that means, but it looks positive! LOL
Thank you for watching and commenting TUK!!!!
The old ratpacks looked way better.
I wish I could get my hands on one!!!!!!!!
Thank you for watching and commenting!
@
It had two small tins meat
one small tin veg
2 x energy Tarzan bars - rum and raisin and chocolate
1 x pack dog biscuits
2 x energy drinks
1 x milkshake
1 x processed cheese
1 x super C sweets
coffee, tea sugar
tube condensed milk
fuel tablets.
These days I wonder how many calories it had - we were all as lean a hunting dogs.
Also one pack pronutro porridge...
I love the videos you put out and I want to start doin ration videos but I don’t know where to start or what to do and im very nervous about it. I was wonderin if u have any tips or suggestions
I would pick a video editing software. Then just eat a normal meal on camera. I can't tell you how many rations I have wasted no knowing what I was doing in the filming process. Then go edit the videos and get practice with that. It is by far the hardest part and very time consuming. As you get better with the editing, it gets easier and faster. Though it can still be really time consuming!
I wish you the best of luck! Beware, TH-cam does not pay well, so do not expect a big influx of revenue from this hobby.
@RationNerd Thank you so much and Im not lookin to make revenue from this just want to share my experience and opinions on rations i have had while deployed and my experience with ones I have never seen before and I wish you the same and that you continue to grow your channel. I also am the same way about my coffee in the mornin 😂😂

Bring on the Art class with that GD coffee!
ROFL! Thank you!

Nice review and it looked to be a very good ration. I did chuckle about the sugar and the chutney. It's like some marketing minion in the SA govt. said, "Hey, guys, if we give them really big packaging, they will think they're getting so much more than we are actually giving. Good for morale. Look at our HUGE packs of sugar!" I love watching these videos. Never had the desire to try and do one for myself. I'm far more interested in just chowing down on the food rather than film the journey with commentary on each component. F*** that. Give me the food and get that camera out of the way. This looks to be absolutely worth a purchase. Is it perfect? Far from it. Not enough good coffee and, ugh, mango flavoring. But, for the most part, I would be very happy with this. Does Thailand make rations? That might be an interesting meal.
You are right about the sugar pack, what a rip off!
I am not sure about the ration from Thailand, if they have one, I certainly want one! You would certainly be happy with this ration my friend! Aside from the janky nasty coffee, I was really happy with this one!!!!!
Thank you for watching and commenting!!!
MRE breakfast time
Thank you for watching and commenting Yuckster!
Roflmao 😂😂😂
Darn it! I keep messing the premier!
It is okay my friend! I am just glad you catch the videos, no matter when!
With those big mains this would be like 36 hour ration to me. After I've lost almost 40 kg weight, I really can't eat that much.
Congrats on losing so much weight! That is one of the most challenging things to do. People that were born with high metabolisms and are genetically predisposed to being thin, have no idea how hard it is to lose weight! I salute you sir!
@@RationNerd Thank you so much. It was a long and hard road, including depression. I'm so much happier nowadays, and can look at the mirror without hating myself.
@@AzagXul666 I am EXTREMEMLY happy for you my friend! I am proud to have great subscribers like you! A lot of my subs have their own challenges they are either dealing with or have dealt with. People are amazingly resilient!

Sorry ration nerd but it looks like a cat shit on your breakfast tray lol hugs from uk
Roflmao😂😂😂
OMFG.....I literally almost fell out of my chair laughing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SA's "milspec" coffee it utterly shite! There's far better coffee available from any supermarket. Jacobs is quite decent.
All soldiers deserve much better! Very few countries get it right in my opinion. Soldiers sacrifice so much and are rewarded with crappy rations and hideous coffee! It is a crime!
