I know I have been out 24 years, but we used to sort through our rations to get rid of as much as possible, keeping the high calorie/energy items. Brit Arctic Rations - Breakfast muesli was crap, the hot chocolate had the same calories. When it was tins and tubes, the cheese/jam/butter mix on the pretty hard biscuits would be a meal - and lots of energy. You yomp with what you have so that was important. This looks like 2/3 days meals! Do they march far with this lot, and how do the troops break it down? More interesting than some gourmet experience....
We are all interested for different reasons. I am trying to show the whole ration. As a former soldier (thank you for your service!) I am sure you can figure out what you would take in your pack. Thank you for the comment!
Hey bro. Aussie here, super pumped you like our rations! Just wish they put as much effort into our government ad they do the food 😂 Side note with the vegemite. Looking at a max of a pea sized amount per slice if youre a newbie. Also wish you threw some Bega on the bread with it :P Have a great day :)

Yes you can still buy condensed milk in a tube in Australia so go to an Australian store over there in America and you should be able to get it . It is certainly a robust example of a spoon! I learned about the condensed milk in a tube here in the US! I still have yet to get any, but at least I know they are here. "That is a metric shit ton of food". I disagree. It is a huge verity of a little bit of different foods but the quantity as a whole appears to be relatively minimal for a 24 hour fighting man's rations. On top of that it looks like at least a quarter of the weight is in packaging. When I was in service, I would have eaten most of that 24 hour ration in one sitting. I assume that Australia still used mess kits since you can't heat up those pouches with just matches and what else are you scrubbing, the spoon?
We will have to agree to disagree! For me, it is a lot of food. I can understand if you are extremely active....either way. Thank you for the comment and the view.
everything can be heated in the bags and eaten so you just need your kidney cup, hexi stove and water. everything else you need is in the kit. because these are designed for hot weather environments of australia mostly these meals are to be consumed with a large volume of fluids. you should be drinking a litre or so an hour and with the meals your drinking at least a litre in the drinks. the museli expands in your stoach and increases the feeling of being full as well as the powdered milk drink, museli bars, condensed fruit etc. I'm a big eater and i never felt hungry eating these.
marmite, vegemite, aussiemite, promite are all different. similar in the niche meaty salty flavour in the same way plum jam and strawberry jam are both jams but completely different too.
Showing my age... SEATO rat pack cereal biscuits (same as in US C rations), tinned butter concentrate, tube raspberry jam and 7 litre bottles of water was what we took on 12 hr exercises back in the day. Being taught by instructors rotated in from Vietnam.
I was laughing the whole time you were bringing that tube of Vegemite to your spoon for your first taste. Hehehe, Vegemite, and it’s UK cousin Marmite, is nastyyy
I think the best way to describe the taste of Vegemite to virgins is "concentrated soy sauce". It's salty, it's savoury, it's umami. Use it sparingly, according to your taste. Like you would with soy sauce, or even just salt.
The next time I get a chance to try it again, I will be able to do it correctly. The first time I used too much. I am going to try to get another Australian ration, first because it was awesome! And second, to redeem myself with the vegemite! Thank you for the comment and for watching!!
You can even put it in some hot water for a cup of hearty broth. It was originally made as a beef stock replacement. So anything you might use beef stock in, you can use Vegemite.
You have probable been told this by now . Vegemite should be used sparingly with a lot of cheese or butter / maagarine .Americans use it like it's Nutella . It needs the creamy spread to balance the saltiness . When used properly it's delicious . You use a small amount of salt to anhance a meals taste . You don't such on the salt shaker. Proper use is fresh bread a a cracker apply a lot of cheese or butter apply a SMALL amount of Vegemite .
I never get tired of good advice! Vegemite was never something I grew up with, so I had no clue what I was doing! I did get another Aussie ration, menu D that will be on the channel soon. So I will have a chance to redeem myself to the vegemite eating community! I plan on trying it properly this time. To be fair, I have never really like beer. So it just might not be for me, but we will see! Thank you for watching and commenting!
It's from Australia so how could it not be absolutely awesome? That's a tough way to try and eat Vegemite. Bread or Toast with butter and Vegemite spread nice and thin is the way to go. Great to have on Toast with Soup as well imo.

The Australian Ration packs are always been really nice. Even in 1981. Anything I didn't like in Ration packs was it used to call it the dog biscuit. It was almost half the size of your hand you soak it overnight and we're still rock hard the next day. That was the only thing I did not like. The French Ration pack wasn't too bad neither. It used to have a pack of smokes if you smoked and also a little bottle of 50 ml of alcohol. Tested or riding black coffee especially during guard duty in winter time.
I would have loved to be able to try one of those older ones. I don't drink, but I would still give the alcohol a try just for the sake of it. Thank you for watching and commenting!
LOL. I was talking about that song by the band Men at Work, "he just smiled and gave me a vegemite sandwich". Not sure what you were talking about...LOL. But when I was young that song was on MTV.....oops, just dated myself!
yeah I get that people look at vegemite and their brain says "chocolate" so they can't sorta get around that. But yeah it tastes like really dark and reduced beer mixed with half a cup of salt. You did the old classic error of eating way too much, you don't slather it on like chocolate you just sorta smear a tiny bit on what you're eating, preferably with butter. Without butter combining it with that cheese or even the condensed milk might be nice, on the bread. Nobody really eats it on its own, but yeah once you get the taste you 'can' but it's not the way to do it.
Believe me! I know that for sure now! LOL. I really like the ration hobby, since I have ZERO clue where or even why I would have tried it. But I was lucky enough to get an Aussie ration and had a really good time filming the review! Thank you for watching and commenting!
I put the various bars in my pockets for snacks. And suck on the condensed milk. Sometimes suck on some Vegemite for the salt if I'm sweating. For a quick coffee, you can pour the pack in your mouth, a squirt of condensed milk, mouthful from your canteen, swish and swallow. :)
I'm not a real fan of Tabasco myself, EXCEPT when it comes to that bloody Tuna in my ration packs. Never tried a small amount of Vegemite in it, but it just might help the flavour of the Tuna. Then again, it might make things worse, experiment with caution.
LOL. Seafood of any kind is not my favorite. But you could be right! Vegemite may change the flavor so much that it no longer tastes like tuna. Or, it could make it 100% inedible.
As an Aussie, thank you for not starting this with a cringe attempt at G’day Mate. But mate, you’re doing Vegemite wrong. You have a thin smear of it on cheap white bread with way too much butter. That’s the Vegemite kid way.
The only thing I like about it is that it is not so hard on your teeth. But with all food items, to each their own! I am sure someone out there prefers little rock hard beef jerky pieces! Thank you for watching and leaving a comment!
Plenty to trade with the natives. 😀 You keep saying it's sweet but you keep piling on the sugar, seems the Aftermint insulin is a choice. Condensed milk on the muesli/raspberry bar/chocolate cake, in the coffee and a cup full of M&Ms for lunch! The bread was either for the Vegemite or sopping up the sambal or beef. The crackers were for the cheese, not breakfast. Vegemite is not peanut butter, it is scrapped on very thin on crackers or the bread.
What can I say? If you give me a tube of sweetened condensed, i am putting it on everything I can! It is just too good not to! And, we have cultural differences, like vegemite that I do not know of. That is the fun thing about doing these reviews. I learn a lot and get awesome people telling me about what I did wrong! Also explaining certain items. It is a fun learning experience!
@@RationNerd I'm not a vegemite guy but as you have discovered it is an intense "umami" flavour and very salty. Like all good things use sparingly. 😄 Very sparingly. Vegemite or Marmite as it's called in the UK is definitely a you love it or hate it deal, there is no in-between. They actually ran an AD campaign in the UK were the lovers and the haters went to war over it
the Vegamite is yeast from beer processing its got to be spread very thin. try it with buttered toast spread thin. I tried it and I liked it.
I kind of wish I would have known that ahead of time. But, part of what I do is go into every ration with minimal information. That way I have a more genuine reaction to all the items. In the future, if I get more vegemite I plan on trying it again.
Thank you for the comment and the view! Stay tuned, I will be messing something else up soon!
The tubes of condensed milk were always my fav I ate it straight from the tube lol. Did the swaperoo with other guys just to get more. I'm sure the jam used to be in a tube too in my day.

Just wish they put as much effort into our government ad they do the food 😂
Side note with the vegemite. If youve still got the tube please PLEASE try it on some proper toast with a heap of butter, and cheese if youre looking for a more mellow bite. Looking at a max of a pea sized amount per slice if youre a newbie. Also wish you threw some Bega on the bread with it :P
Have a great day :)
Thank you Tacofry! I am trying really hard to get another Aussie ration! Next time I will definitely try the vegemite properly! Thank you for watching and subscribing!

I used to get in trouble whenever dad brought home some of his left over jam tubes and I would drain them dry in seconds. They are so good

Also we used to cook in packet in a canteen cup, you can can then use the water for tea / coffee

When drink mixes melt from heat like that, use a tiny bit of hot water (about 1 ounce) and mix it to melt it before adding the cold water
Great advice! I never think of stuff like that when I am sitting down at the review table. Too much going on in my head.

That's a great ration. The condensed milk tube is the star imho.
I love sweetened condensed milk! It really made my day with this ration!
Thank you for the comment and coming along for the ride!
Yeah, I've eaten a few of these, and I'd rather that than the musk lifesavers.
Vegemite is not jam. you arent supposed to put it on thick. its a concentrate and should be used extremely sparingly. try a thin strip of it on bread with a bit of the milk/
Next time! I try to go into each ration as uninformed as possible. That way I am not influenced by another opinion other than my own. I do screw things up occasionally, but at least you guys get to poke fun at me! LOL.

That is not a spoon it is an emergency trenching tool for after you have eaten all the ration pack. Yes you can still buy condensed milk in a tube in Australia so go to an Australian store over there in America and you should be able to get it . Nestle Sweetened Condensed Milk 170g comes in a tube .
It is certainly a robust example of a spoon!
I learned about the condensed milk in a tube here in the US! I still have yet to get any, but at least I know they are here.
Besides, if I did get them it would give me an excuse to suck down a tube or two a week.

Everyone is a commando!
"I eat 17,000 calories because I am monster. This is nothing for real man."
LOL Get a grip Rambo.
everything can be heated in the bags and eaten so you just need your kidney cup, hexi stove and water. everything else you need is in the kit. because these are designed for hot weather environments of australia mostly these meals are to be consumed with a large volume of fluids. you should be drinking a litre or so an hour and with the meals your drinking at least a litre in the drinks. the museli expands in your stoach and increases the feeling of being full as well as the powdered milk drink, museli bars, condensed fruit etc. I'm a big eater and i never felt hungry eating these.

marmite, vegemite, aussiemite, promite are all different. similar in the niche meaty salty flavour in the same way plum jam and strawberry jam are both jams but completely different too.
the musk flavour comes from rose water, which kinda explains the grandma thing
That really does explain a lot about that flavor!

Showing my age... SEATO rat pack cereal biscuits (same as in US C rations), tinned butter concentrate, tube raspberry jam and 7 litre bottles of water was what we took on 12 hr exercises back in the day. Being taught by instructors rotated in from Vietnam.
That does not sound appetizing, but at least you stayed hydrated!

I was laughing the whole time you were bringing that tube of Vegemite to your spoon for your first taste. Hehehe, Vegemite, and it’s UK cousin Marmite, is nastyyy
LOL. I have another Australian menu D and have have a ton of comments telling me how to eat vegemite. I am going to give it one hell of a try.
@@RationNerd Better you than me, haha! Good luck bro…
Back in the day I used to mix the jam in with the muesli.
There are so many great items on this ration, the combinations and options make it an excellent ration!
That ration was by far one of my favorites! Next time I get one, I will try the vegemite the correct way. Thank you for the comment and the view!

I don't drink, but I would still give the alcohol a try just for the sake of it.

yeah I get that people look at vegemite and their brain says "chocolate" so they can't sorta get around that.
LOL.

That is dedication right there!!! Mix in mouth brew!

Plenty to trade with the natives. 😀
You keep saying it's sweet but you keep piling on the sugar, seems the Aftermint insulin is a choice.
