Damn, even on 100 degree day you have time to take us along and the patience to explain your process of looking for the short. Thanks! I appreciate it.
For future reference: APIM = Accessory Protocol Interface Module (SYNC/Infotainment Computer) PAM = Park Assist Module (Backup sensors/cross traffic alert) SASM = Steering Angle Sensor Module (Part of the Electric power steering system) OSCM = Occupant Classification System Module (Part of the SRS that determines the weight of the person sitting in a seat) HCM = Headlamp Control Module ACM = Audio Control Module (Radio) FCIM/FCDIM = Front Control [Display] Interface Module (buttons and/or touchscreen in dash for Radio) DSP = Digital Signal Processing Module (Part of the Sony sound system, has speaker amplifier in it) LTM = Liftgate Trunk Module (controls power liftgate)
If I suspect a particular module may be responsible for a short to power, rather than looking all over the car for it, I will pull the fuses to that module. It should cut the power to the feed wires also. If you pulled the fuse to the ocm, your comm. network probably would have returned to normal. Then you could replace the fuse and unplug the module to determine if the short is in the wiring harness or the module. It doesn't work all of the time, but can be a real time saver. In this business, if you can save time it,s a plus. Especially when it's a hundred degrees and you're working outside.
Thanks for sharing Eric👍 I can imagine how difficult it is to fix a vehicle parked outside on such a hot day, & you're filming it at the same time👍 Great content, Stay Safe❤
Patience and the Mind set is a virtue that few possess, especially when it's 100 outside not to mention in the direct sun but YOU my friend excel in both. I would have past out. Excellent job Eric. Glad to hear your about done with the wife's truck. Stay Safe buddy.
Very good explanation thank you very much. The apim is the accessory protocol interface module. That is also known as the sync. It controls your navigation phone communication and goes through the touch button screen. Love your videos keep it up thank you!
i have a 2013 escape that i just replaced the engine in and after 200 miles the dash went nuts , found codes that all lead to hs can lines, sometimes pcm will communicate if i clear codes communication stops. your video tells me i am on the right track thanks...
More automotive good !! I cant recall when I subscribed to your channel however, I'm impressed all over again. You have done a stellar job here in providing good troubleshooting techniques and exemplary educational care. "let me zoom in" lol. But seriously - Good Job Man! 👍
I have a 2013 Escape, 1.6L SE with 140K miles. One day, out of the blue with no warning, it would not start. It was showing multiple fault warnings, including starting system fault. Two different mechanics couldn't isolate the cause. After watching this video, I was able to determine that the issue was a failed safety restraint module. I disconnected the wiring harness under the passenger seat and everything went back to normal.
I forgot to mention at the beginning of the video that the vehicle was an intermittent No Crank. Sometimes it would not crank at all and showed a message on the dash that said "Starting System Fault".
Exactly what I was gonna say . That harness is for the aftermarket to work like factory remote start system. . You hit lock 3 times and the car starts . . . O well not no more .
I haven’t finished watching the whole video yet, but would like to make a suggestion. The use of a regular DMM to confirm the shorted line to either the +12 or to Ground can be further enhanced by using a Milliohm meter to determine where on the bus has a lower Ohm reading and thus lead you closer to the shorted line, whether it be internal to a module or on the bus itself.
Brother, take it from someone who works outside in Palm Springs, buy the HF pop up 10 x 10 canopy. Another well done video. Your numbers are going to keep going up so keep on, keepin' on.
Awesome fine!! That a weird case study LoL!. You make CAN bus network system so easy. I learned a lot from your videos. My sister’s best friend just moved in Houston, TX. I’ll tell them about you if they need car service/diagnostic. Subscriber for life! Keep it up and stay safe.
Eric outstanding video and thank you for taking the time to go over the different systems and the wiring diagram. Did not realize it looks like to me that each comm. module has two terminating resistors. Thank for sharing and hope you and family are well Artie ❤️
Dang Bro!!! What a run around before the back story. Gotta love the “ooh ya by the way my uncles, friends, dads, brothers, sons, Boyfriend did this before I brought my car in. Great work Brosuff 🙌🍻🤙
Eric is a master detective in auto electronics 👍 I wish I knew a good electronic tech as good as Eric here in Canada 🇨🇦. Stay safe. People that perform this type of damage need to be tracked so they can’t damage anything else LOL
I'm curious that with a CAN line verified being shorted to power, in theory it seems like you could use a wiring diagram to find and disconnect the fuses for each module on rhe line to find the one at fault
Outstanding video. Very interesting and informative. Appreciate your efforts, especially in that grueling heat, and taking us along your logic path in fault detection. Take a bow, man ! The applause is for you ! :)
Good fix. No doubt there someone else's hand was involved. But I would be the same you, I would of suspected damage on right side of car. Stay cool !!!!!
start with connectors and separate system. The thingy you unplugged from the dlc connector might have been a gps tracker from used car lot... great job......
I am a fan of your videos, your videos has helped me a lot in understanding some new issue which occurs in a vehicle. Now i am stuck on a vehicle 2004 toyota qualis 2.4 gst, the problem is that there is no voltage coming to the a/c compressor, all the fuses are ok the relay is good, the a/c control switch is good i have even changed to a new one but still unable to remove the fault. If u could guide me i will be thankful.
Grandpa was probably onto something. Remember that extra harness you dug out from other the dash that was connected to the DLC? GPS tracking devices are often linked into the DLC via one of these types of adapters at the behest of a lien holder. It seems likely that he removed the GPS tracking device, albeit rather crudely.
Excelente video, pregunta...porque en cuestas pronunciadas la temperatura sube hasta hot en la Ford Escape 2013 motor 1.6L, tiene su refrigerante, aceite de caja ok, motor ok
I don't like vehicles tracking devices either but that's not how you'd go about something like that 🤔 Reminds me of finding the CAN wires shorting out in the driver door of my 08 Caravan I got super cheap, NOTHING was working on the interior network. 2 CAN lines broken with 6 or 7 other wires in the same spot because someone installed the wiring door flexer twisted and it was pinching in the door.
I'm not sure why, but my touchscreen started having trouble after about a year of owning it. Then one day it just stopped working all together. I had to use a wireless mouse to control it.
It's possible that the Uncle was actually correct. The cable at 7:29 may have been connected to a GPS unit that is used by 'Buy Here Pay Here' companies who use it to track vehicles when the owners stop making payments. He may have mistakenly suspected the unit under the seat as well.
Bought a wreck 2014 escape wrecker dropped it off then when i moved it to the back the stereo stop working the obd fuse kept blowing found the short and now it has a missfire on cyl 2 and 3 , battery drains in just overnight cant seem to find the problem thinking its a short has 180 compression
I had this same issue on my Focus ST. The dealer had the car for 3 days and said the issue was caused by battery acid damage to a sensor that is mounted on the negative battery terminal lug. I just picked up the car and had to pay for the repair because the warranty did not cover it.
Damn, even on 100 degree day you have time to take us along and the patience to explain your process of looking for the short. Thanks! I appreciate it.
You are a good teacher. Love the way you explain stuff. Great video.
Great job Eric....It hard enough diagnosing a normal problem without the customer causing unknown issues....

Not only was it displaying a tach reading, it was a reasonable reading that matched the engine idle speed. Definitely a good sign.
I never understood why customers won't give you the whole story until after it's fixed. Had this happen to me multiple times.
Thank you for the explaining the whole process. This is another diag channel I’ll look up to for diag process.

No sabía que hablabas español hermano! Excelentes todos tus vídeos! I've learned a lot with you bro! You have a great talent! God bless you
Helps me understand CAN BUS more. Thanks for the video.
You are a real Man , I like the dynamics of your videos and the way you teach .. Thanks partner .
Thank you Eric. Good job. Have a blessed and safe week to you and your family. Hope the tropical storm has not been too bad for you.
We’ve been lucky to only have rain. We’ve needed some rain lately anyway. I’m getting tired of having to water my lawn every night.
I admire your hard work. Not many as sharp as you.

Haha!
Are you a mobile tech? Do you work or know anyone that does the same thing you do in phoenix az?
@@PlumpyWhale look up fixitangel , hes in your area and is a genius
I've got a 2018 Escape 1.5L. It has the same T-harness for the diagnostic connector - it's for the dealer-installed remote start system.
Exactly what I was gonna say . That harness is for the aftermarket to work like factory remote start system. . You hit lock 3 times and the car starts . . . O well not no more .
Good job in finding that missing module, what a crazy nightmare.

Hello,
Would you know what issue it would be if the computer from the transmission is not communicating with the computer from the vehicle?
I have the same VIN read/decode issue on my maxi-sys 908 and Ultra on certain vehicles

APIM is a audio module, generally speaking it's the sync module for usb and hands free abilities.

I had this same issue on my Focus ST. The dealer had the car for 3 days and said the issue was caused by battery acid damage to a sensor that is mounted on the negative battery terminal lug. I just picked up the car and had to pay for the repair because the warranty did not cover it.
Did your vehicle have multiple false engine faults as a result of the damaged sensor?
It's hard to imagine a failed BMS sensor causing those issues.
