Running is not like a multiple choice exam, you don't get lucky or have a very good day and smash your PBs but never get near them again. @@wanderingwalle8726Outlier performance in an Olympic field is not so strange. Runners have trained for a form peak, and usually 1500 is not a flat out race from the start. No hares. So OR on 1500 lags WR by quite a bit. But this time the pace was extreme as Ingebrigtsen tried to drop those with better kick. And if that failed and the top kickers held on, the time was going to be very fast.
He made a move in the final 150, got blocked by Ingebrigsten. But was smart enough to lay back for a beat or two and let Ingebrigsten and Kerr focus on each other, he played it patient, saw the pocket and took it. One of the most brilliant races of all time. Olympic record, #7 all time. He has cemented his place in history. Amazing story, amazingly humble guy.
Also, credit to his team mates Kessler and Neguse for maintaining perfect mid position. This allowed Hocker to just stay back on the early laps, and then move up into a safe parking. Then going into the final bell lap they were 4, 5 and 6th place. Perfect set-up for Nuguse and Hocker for the final drive.

He peaked at the right time and ran the perfect race. He EARNED that Olympic gold and Olympic record. You don't become a world top 10 distance runner from just luck.
I agree, but everything you just said refutes your own statement - that luck plays a PART in everything. Where was the luck this year with Hocker? Or are you just referring to the fact that he was able to avoid injuries this past offseason, unlike prior seasons, to allow him to expand his fitness?
I totally agree. it was an incredibly stacked race, and Hocker, just as the narrator said, peaked at the right time, ran his best in a tactical race, and used his amazing finishing speed to win the race. Hocker won the gold, and all the credit goes to him.
Met Cole a few weeks ago with my sons. He was the humblest and kindest dude ever. He spoke for 15 minutes with my 11 and 13 year old and asked them questions about their running gave them advice and said he would keep up with them over the coming years. He is a great guy and an amazing talent.
Agree. He is so soft spoken and humble. A true ambassador. Breath of fresh air this guy. The antithesis of the American track athlete and I love him for it
He won the Gold medal and won the race as it was run. No one can take it away, unless he was found guilty of doping. And that scenario seems to be ridiculously unlikely. He straight up won. That's it.
Cole got blocked in the last 100 meters and had to slow down, but then he composed himself for another acceleration to win at an extremely fast 1500 Olympic final. There is nothing lucky about that. He has a fantastic ability and a hard work ethic. With that kick, he will always be a nightmare for other elite runners.
Look at the list of Olympic 1500m champions and see how many 'repeaters' there are on it; pretty slim pickings. And running that 1500m in 3:27, plus a few other sub-3:30s, shows he isn't just a slouch who got lucky on a summer day in Paris 2024. EDIT: The only 'luck' part of this was in that last 120m, everything else was 12 superb runners competing for Olympic glory. When Jakob forgot a cardinal rule to keep the curb lane closed and wandered out a bit, a 'blocked-out' Hocker saw his 'lucky' break and dashed through.
US Middle Distance Team certainly "outperformed" themselves. People so concerned as to whether he'll ever run that well again. While i think he will, he doesnt have to. Hes been winning championship races at every level he's competed in and then won at the highest level. The only thing that could take that away is if he won with a 3:50 or something; which would frankly be an embarrassment to racing in general. Good thing no American has ever done that
Not to toot my own horn, but I told a lot of people had a legit shot at winning that race. My point is, anyone that follows track and field would have agreed with me. It's just the field was so big, it was going to be hard. He did it. He was the best on that day, but not lucky.
I've been on letsrun before, and most of them need help with brain surgery, they dislike anything that doesn't agree with there opinion. If you ever need tips on becoming a better runner, the last place you want to go to, is letsrun.
Well said, TRP. Hear, hear. Before the race I had Cole Hocker as a possible winner. It all would come down to how the race was run. If Ingebrigsten led early, forcing the pace, I forecast him to be "picked off" by Kerr or Hocker. (Which is what happened) If the pace was average/fast and Ingebritsen waited until 500 to go, I didn't think Jakob would be beaten. Obviously, if it was slow and he sat back, Jakob would be swamped on the last 200. There was no "Luck" in Cole Hocker winning. He was the best on the day, using those race tactics. Same as Centro. No one wins an Olympic Gold in Track by "Luck".
Hocker is a fierce and smart competitor and a great talent. And he’s young. We here in the States are lucky to have such a deep bench of well developed middle distance runners. I’m looking forward to upcoming cross country and track seasons. Gonna be fun to watch these guys.

Seeing Cole win the 1500m was the highlight of the Olympics for me. There was so much(too much) hype around Kerr and Ingebrigtsten that it was as if there was nobody else in the race. I loved it. Cole is a very gifted runner. He may not be as consistent in winning as frequently as others, but who cares! He's Olympic champion in the 1500m. I can confidently say that Ingebrigtsten would easily give up all his victories after winning in Tokyo to have repeated his 1500m victory in Paris. Nothing compares to being an Olympic champion. Congrats once again to Cole for a brilliantly and fearlessly executed race. Bravo!~
It is reported that Gary Player, one of the all-time greats of world golf, was challenged during a practice round by a spectator about playing a “lucky” shot out of a bunker and close to the pin. He replied, “The more I work and practice the luckier I seem to get!”.
Hocker seems like a lovely fella, and I’m genuinely happy he’s done well. However there is no way the game plan was wait for ingerbricson to push Kerr out way out wide, knowing he hates him so much he would rather give up a medal than have Kerr win. If he hadn’t Hocker is 4th. Saying that luck is where practice meets opportunity and all that 🤷🏼♂️ Saying he won’t win anything again is , of course, patently ridiculous.
Andrew, totally agree with you. And I do seem to recall that before the Olympics, you did actually tip Hocker as a possible medaller, even if he wasn't necessary the favorite. But I do recall that you specifically referred to his closing speed and finishing kick. Personally, i believe Hocker's Olympic performance was the result of a couple of factors coming together, and he simply ran his races to perfection, given the specific nature of the Olympic competition. Its a testimony of his form, and also his endurance to go through the various rounds, and qualify, and then put donw such an incredible performance in the final.
I think those who think Jakob or Kerr should have won and just say Cole was lucky are delulu. As much as Jakob and Kerr were at each other, Cole has put on a an amazing season that no one really payed attention to, he was the dark horse/ underdog. He was running just as fast as Jakob and Kerr in track races. Cole set an Olympic record, he knows what he is doing he knows how to race, he knew the spotlight was on Kerr and Jakob, he knew he could win it and that’s what he did. He wasn’t lucky he is a smart strong runner and knows what he is doing.
Provided you are already at top level, tactics is everything in the 1500m. Which makes it so exciting to watch. He played it brilliantly and deserved the gold. No luck at all
Cole Hocker is an awesome athlete, 3:27 is super fast, he broke the Olympic record to win that race beating the reigning Olympic and World champions in the process. If he has a sniff of winning a race with 100m to go back him as there is no one with a better finishing kick.
And in the defense of Matt, he ran his race and the rest of the field allowed it. They didn’t make it any faster. In fact the only athlete to even pass him in that race tried to slow it down even further.
No way he was lucky. He got cut off coming around the final bend and lost momentum, to kick on from there and win the race was a lot of things, but lucky wasn’t one of them.
TRP critizes the guy who wrote that Cole Hocker was lucky. 1:38: " When you combine these amazing kicking abilities with the perfect execution on the perfect day" You are already contradicting yourself because if the american athlete was not on his perfect, he would have lost. Therefore luck played an important role.
Hocker, like Kerr, had a good offseason of training because he wasn't dealing with his usual slate of injuries, and THAT was why both of them did particularly well this year. Injuries are a part of this sport, and to ignore or marginalize that just shows a complete level of ignorance.
Hocker has improved by addressing his "weaknesses" perfectly. He's managed to become a runner strong enough to keep contact with the best even while running at world record pace, and still be able to kick for the win. That's what got him Olympic gold, not luck! If he can maintain this kind of fitness and ability to peak at the right time without injury, he'll be a serious contender at every major competition in the coming years.
Exactly, he has addressed the bad habit of "sit and kick", which doesn't work anymore in these "Ingebritzen" days. He ran near enough to the front to use the gift he possesses- finishing speed, from 3/4 meters back, not 12/15.
@@isitrachelorj3953 Yep, what a difference after he changed his strategy of hanging too far back. And now that's he's run extremely fast times in several races, it must be a huge confidence boost to know he can go out fast and not die near the end.
Cole won the two most important races of the season for him. US Nationals (Olympic Trials) and the Olympics. Who didn’t know that Yared was going to try to run the kick out of Cole in the Trials? And who didn’t know that Jakob was going to try to run the kick out of Josh in the Olympics? So Cole had his race plan for both; tuck in and wait until final 300 or less to make a move. Some athletes perform best the bigger the stage. I believe Cole is one of them. Note about Centro - if you watched his races - he was likely the best tactician ever. It takes talent, speed, endurance, instincts and practice to always (or at least almost) be in the best position to win. The other runners want to be there too. The 1500 is the most tactical race. The 2016 Olympics was a purely tactical race. No real surprise Centro won for me.
TBH, if he hadn't been blocked on his first attempt to pass at the curve, he might have won by more. If he'd been in the lead with 60-80m to go, no one would've caught him. IMO.
Also, if he ‘never wins again’ and? He’s an Olympic gold medalist in one of the highest profile blue ribband events against a GOAT level runner and incredibly deep field. 99.99% of people would happily rest on those laurels. The guy who posted that garbage opinion would rest on infinitely less
Calling it luck is an insult to all the work he has put in. NOBODY wins an Olympic Gold by getting lucky. He ran the best race of his life in the Olympic final. That's when you're supposed to run your best! Jakob got too fired up and went out too hard. Hocker had the mental toughness and discipline to stick to his race plan. There is nothing lucky about that at all. Whoever wrote that is a troll looking for attention.
I had my bets on him winning gold from the moment I saw his performance at the Olympic trials. He has great speed and strategy when it comes to running his race. This was not about luck. This was about pure, solid, extraordinary, and honorable talent. I look forward to him winning again in LA 2028
Hocker and Hoeppel both ditched the "sit and kick" crap that had been holding them back. To sit in 9th/12th, at the back of the pack, and rely on devastating kicks doesn't work in these "Ingebritzen" days. Hocker was never farther back than 6th, a few meters, and spend most of the race in 4th, well within striking distance. Grant Fisher also ran near the front all race long in his exceptional performance. The days of sit and kick are finished ( hear that Clayton?).
A lot of nutty people out there, or trolls. I know it is a separate sport, but on a video concerning Rafa Nadal, one of the top three tennis players in history, who announced his retirement today, someone said this: " eah Nadal was an ok player but nothing special, at least not to me anyway. I am so sick of people sipping up to the guy. It annoys me so much. To be honest, I can beat Nadal on my day and I'm not even a pro (although I could be if I wanted). Nadal is a try hard. That's it. If I practiced like every second of my life I would win like 100 grandslams. So NO I aint impressed."
Luck is definitely a component of any athletes performances, but to credit it as the reason someone won an event is just silly. Even if you win because someone fell, the fact is, you put yourself in position to take advantage.
Won gold. Ran 3:27.61 and would have finished 3:26 high if he didn't have to double clutch his kick. The only lucky part was Jakob moving over to the right to block Josh. Had the lane not opened, Cole would have had to settle for Silver or Bronze (his own words on that).
@@Foxpark97 Agreed but you have to have proof before posting that he’s a doper. If you’re in the biggest race of your life and they leave lane one open for you near the finish line you’re going to dig deep and push towards the tape!

He ran a perfect race and capitalized on Kerr and Ingerbrigtsen's battle. But who would say that he wouldn't otherwise have won?
If you win gold at the Olympics, with all of the best runners in world present and healthy, AND set a new OR, then there is no luck involved.
the letsrun forums are some of the most toxic places ever
But why is centrowitz known as the lucky guy? Didnt he win 2 1500m medals at worlds prior to his olympic gold?
Matt took what was given to him. Just like any other WORLD CLASS ATHLETE would have. Matt was the best on that day and years leading up to it.
centro is a doping cheater
@Foxpark97 documentation, please.
Provided you are already at top level, tactics is everything in the 1500m. Which makes it so exciting to watch. He played it brilliantly and deserved the gold. No luck at all
lol what is bro even talking about. Such unnecessary hate
Cole Hocker is an awesome athlete, 3:27 is super fast, he broke the Olympic record to win that race beating the reigning Olympic and World champions in the process. If he has a sniff of winning a race with 100m to go back him as there is no one with a better finishing kick.
I've been following Cole since his win at the FootLocker CC Midwest Championships in Kenosha, WI.
And in the defense of Matt, he ran his race and the rest of the field allowed it. They didn’t make it any faster. In fact the only athlete to even pass him in that race tried to slow it down even further.
Very disrespectful towards the athlete. The guy took his chance and ran a championship record, he deserves to be an Olympic champion.
doping cheater deserves to be in prison for theft and fraud
No way he was lucky. He got cut off coming around the final bend and lost momentum, to kick on from there and win the race was a lot of things, but lucky wasn’t one of them.
He's consistent but doesnt consistently win medals. And thats just the truth. He REALLY had to give his Very best huh
Cole proved to be stronger than Jakob. Full stop.
doping cheater
Cole is suspect, USADA also has a record of letting known dopers compete.
Jakob ran sub 3:26 world record pace and lost gas at the remaining 200m. Hocker paced perfectly and got the best kick of all 1500 runners. No luck.
TRP critizes the guy who wrote that Cole Hocker was lucky.
1:38: " When you combine these amazing kicking abilities with the perfect execution on the perfect day"
You are already contradicting yourself because if the american athlete was not on his perfect, he would have lost.
Contrast to Pre finishing fourth and being praised.....
Luck matters when a bunch of talent is at the same level. And in any mid-distance race where people fight for position and a lot of tactics happen.
It takes more than luck to run an Olympic record.
Cole is the goat!!
And so is trp!!
Winning in 3:50 is luck, but winning in 3;27 which has been the OR, definitely isn't.
One time Hocker! He had the luck of a lifetime, and the worlds best pacer.
The dude got lucky - The End
Hocker was perfect he executed with skill and grace he's got that great kick at the end well deserved Gold medal
Neguse is probably tired of seeing Hocker.
I can't even imagine beating that Olympic field and coming out with a gold medal.
Let's run always looking for some smoke. So typical of 'em.
I don’t think he’ll be as lucky next year 😂
I had my bets on him winning gold from the moment I saw his performance at the Olympic trials.
Cole use his brain in the fight with the others.
Luck is the residue of design. The goal is to be the best 1500 meter in the world on that day. He accomplished that goal. Enough said.
Yes, absolutely. Hocker ran a great race and deserves total respect for it.
Damn. News must be light this time of year. Lol
And Ellen van Langen, won she 800m Gold medal on luck?
she and Hocker are doping cheaters
Won gold. Ran 3:27.61 and would have finished 3:26 high if he didn't have to double clutch his kick. The only lucky part was Jakob moving over to the right to block Josh. Had the lane not opened, Cole would have had to settle for Silver or Bronze (his own words on that).
Haters gotta hate! Makes you wonder about the mental stability of that guy and his post.
dopers gonna dope
@@Foxpark97 Proof? I doubt you have any. Just another unhinged hater?
@@Foxpark97 And another thing, until you have proof quit spreading misinformation! It’s despicable!
@@ChannelGriffin A hater of doping, but not unhinged. Cheating at sports is beyond pathetic.
@@Foxpark97 Agreed but you have to have proof before posting that he’s a doper. If you’re in the biggest race of your life and they leave lane one open for you near the finish line you’re going to dig deep and push towards the tape!
