  • Highway 395 road trip through Mammoth Lakes, June Lake, Bishop and Bodie in 4K
Highway 395 is one of my favorite roads in California. There are so many amazing hikes, lakes, restaurants, historic spots and photographic opportunities all up and down the drive. Amie and I were invited by Yosemite Gateway Chalet to spend 4 days exploring, and we jumped at the chance. This video focuses on the area from Mammoth Lakes to June Lake but shows lots of other spots you can explore around those areas as well.

My girlfriend and I have lived in California for many years, but had never seen any of the sites in this video. After watching, we were both very inspired to take a road trip to the area and finally see it for ourselves. We visited most of the sites and even most of the restaurants mentioned in the video and we had a total blast! Thanks for what you do Josh!

LA native born and raised here...nice video...its great that the area has be preserved and your generation gets to enjoy it...i spent lots of time with my family and later scouting going up 395...the june lake loop was a favorite although no lodges ,trendy restaurants or bars were to be found...more like 2 pump gas stations to check your radiator...mom and pop cafes..a few 30s style motels and best if all hiking in to camp alongside one if the lakes..the hot springs..going to sleep with a million stars then waking up to the smell of camp coffee at dawn..a half hour fishing at first light bagged enough for pan fried trout and eggs for breakfast while you watched everything wake up..days of hiking..canoeing.,..wouldn't trade that experience for any lodge

Ten years ago I took my son on our first 4-week 10K mike road trip. On this trip we hiked in Death Valley in 120 degrees and five hours later entered Yosemite in 50 degrees. Ten years later, we have made such road trips every summer and every chance we get we make this drive. The scenery is amazing. I only wish I didn’t live almost 3000 miles away.

395 is a must. From home, we picked up 395 where it splits from 15 near Hesperia, CA, all the way up to Billings, British Columbia then 3 and 1 west to interstate 15 near Vancouver, BC, down to Bellingham, then over to our cabin. It is so winding, sometimes it's going south. Amazing road trip.

Great video. In the sixties when I was in the boy scouts, camped at silver lake. It was June so sunny and warm during the day. We all went swimming in our Jean's. Hung them up to dry overnight and the next morning they were FROZEN. Will not forget that trip. Also saw bear tracks by the lake the next morning. Just feet away from our tents. Love that area.

I love hwy 395! One of the most beautiful yet I think under appreciated and least known parts of CA. Most think of bishop and mammoth for skiing but I love it better up there other times of the year. So much to see and do and get connected with nature and disconnected from all the trappings of daily life, yet still pampering enough to have restaurants and cabins and stores. Thanks for your video. Had me some ideas of other things to explore next time I’m there.

We've traveled 10,000 miles a year for 10 of the last 12 years and explored 48 states. Hwy 395 still stands out as one of the most scenic highways that one can experience. The first time we made the trip there was in April 2010 and everyday of the trip was preceded by a snowfall the day before. The days were warm so the roads were clear (sometimes a bit wet) but were were surrounded by mountains everyday that were covered in fresh snow. Truly a beautiful way to traverse this area. If you have to travel north through California, this is definitely the primo way to do it :-)

California can be gorgeous and awesome. At the same time it can be a cesspool and the opposite of peaceful. Most "Californians" don't even care about or visit any of the wonders around them. And even if they did care, most can't even enjoy it because the state is so mismanaged and expensive. I personally enjoy California so much more now that I moved away. I can visit enjoy the beauty and get away before the claustrophobic culture starts draining my spirit again.

Living in Northern California, the only time I got to ski Mammoth Lakes Resort was on the Fourth of July, when Tioga Pass was open. They had to pack snow on the trails; it was 2 inches deep, and preserved with potassium. I have a really comical picture of the mountain from 1993.
I have visited that area numerous times. There are several other hot springs, besides Hot Creek. I visited the Laws Museum in Bishop, and also got to meet Jill Kinmont (The Other Side of the Mountain) and her mother. I REALLY did it on a budget; back then, there were a couple of youth hostels that cost under $10 a night, and you could fix your own meals there.
I wish I'd driven the length of it, from Death Valley to Oregon. Maybe I will someday.

The rock band Cinderella filmed a music video at Mono Lake and Bodie for the song "Don't Know What You've Got Till It's Gone" back in 1988. I always wondered where they filmed it, but with no internet back then it was nearly impossible to find out. 8 years later I was sitting in a bar and the video came on the TV. I told the bartender about my curiosity, and he said it was Mono Lake in California. It would be another 13 years after that I moved to Reno and finally got the chance to see Mono and Bodie in person. Since then I have visited the South Tufa five times, and driven past the lake a couple of dozen times. Gotta love the Eastern Sierra!

My absolute favorite time of year to explore 395 is fall. The fall colors here are intense. It’s usually sunny in October, so your photos or videos will look amazing. As long as the mountain passes remain open - there’s an occasional but usually temporary closure due to snow - I’ll keep going back across Tioga Pass to the East side. Tioga Pass usually closes for the season early November.
Thanks for the video! Its been forever since I’ve seen it in summer!

@@californiathroughmylens...I think of the few things I truly miss about California, that sheepherder's bread is maybe at the top. Fresh, with real butter, wow. I loved fishing Rush Creek, but even more, the San Joaquin from a bit upstream of the Post Pile. Entire region is beautiful...

I just started doing my research for highway 395 and your video popped up! I immediately clicked on it because I like your videos. I see you stopped at a place called Whoa Nellie Deli. I perked up at that! I pinned a number of spots you mentioned! Thanks for all the information. ~Lucy

At the bottom From Sonora Pass you hit 395, you can only turn left or right; turning left on 395 you go thru Topaz, Minden, Carson City, all the way to Reno & beyond; turning right, end up in Los Angeles, hitting all the little towns, ghost town Bodie, Bishop, quite a beautiful drive south or north!! CA is the most beautiful state whether inland or especially along Hwy 1 running parallel to the Pacific Ocean!!💙💙💙💙💙💙💙 and no other state compares to our fabulous weather!!

Next time take Hwy 6 out of Bishop north towards Nevada about 30 miles to Benton , turn left on Hwy 120 and go through the tiny Indian town of Benton. Stop and soak in a gravity fed hot springs hot tub in the forest. Keep taking Hwy 120 and there will be zero traffic and the landscape goes from rugged desert to gradually seeing trees, then a forest as you climb higher and eventually come out at Mono Lake. Its a great alternative to driving busy 395 with great views.
