    South Dakota native here...I just had to watch this to see if there was anything I've missed, or if you missed anything! I just wanted to tell you that your visit to the Badlands was better in the rain than if it had been a sunny day! When it's bright and sunny, the formations get very washed out. You don't get to see all the gorgeous colors. We like to visit in the evening on our way back home on the other side of the state. Sunset in the Badlands is AMAZING, especially with big clouds in the sky! If you ever get back to western South Dakota, there's lots more you could do, especially Jewel Cave National Monument and Wind Cave National Park! They both have different types of formations and it's worthwhile visiting both! We've been wanting to visit the Pioneer Auto Museum and that looks great! We'll have to stop there sometime. We've also never stopped at Al's Oasis and that pie looks amazing! You've hit all the highlights! Thanks for sharing our state!

      Thanks so much for watching and for the tips! I had planned to visit Wind Cave but it was closed all summer for elevator repair so I skipped it and will for sure be back to see it and Jewel Cave and more Custer SP

      @ThroughMyLens I was wondering why you didn't go to Wind Cave. Thanks for the explanation. Still a great video!

    • @Stacy-w5f
      @Stacy-w5f 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@ThroughMyLens Yeah, Wind Cave has had so much trouble with their elevators so it's really good that they are replacing them! That park has some nice hiking trails above ground, as well as a herd of bison, so there's more to see there than just a cave tour, but you'd definitely want to come when you can do a cave tour. If you do make it back to the Black Hills someday, you need to also try the Devil's Bathtub trail in Spearfish Canyon and go to Leone's for ice cream in Spearfish. There's also the 1880 train between Hill City and Keystone. You get to see some nice back country on that ride. Like I said, there's so much more you could do there! It would be a great place to bring your kids for a trip!

    I took my 12 year old son on a road trip from central Ohio to the Black Hills in 2002. We camped in Custer State Park. We didn't do the Sylvan Lake hike, but we did rent a canoe while we were there. When I saw the National Treasure movie, I immediately realized that the movie was wrong in placing the lake where it was. My son took a photo of a faint daytime moon through the eye of the needle. A great photo for a Sony 3.2 megapixel point and shoot of that era.😊

    My moms family was born and raised in that area. My great grandpa own and ran a hotel as well as a fish farm outside of spearfish. The black hills are magical. The needles drive is phenomenal. Only been to that area once. I def want to go back one day. My mom said the prairie dogs would walk into my grammas kitchen and tug on her skirt to beg for scraps. My gramma grew up in a sod house because they couldn’t afford very much wood so they used what was plentiful and free. The family would just make more sod bricks to expand their home as they expanded the family. My grandma and grandpas family were homesteaders and prospectors. They never found gold but my great grandpa was a South Dakota territory senator. My grammas oldest brother raised his family and lived out the rest of his life in Wall. Wall is a pretty fun stop. Reminds me of Knott’s berry farm without the rides. lol

    Hi Josh, My family lived in Minot North Dakota when I was a Kid, We've been to all over the Dakota's. One little tidbit I learned from a Docent at the International Peace Garden the Canadian Border with North Dakota, is that the early map makers mislabeled the Turtle Mtns and the Black Hills. The Turtle Mtns are in ND, if you've been there the hills are very dark with dense tree's. you've been to the Black Hills , their not so black and have stone ridge tops...kinda like a turtle. Making Maps back in the 1800s was real hassle so they just stuck with the misprint...

    The hike up Black Elk (formerly Harney) peak from the Sylvan lake trailhead isn't too bad. It was a long time ago when I hiked it, but we did it with a 5 year old. I don't recall having to carry him more than just a little. Nice view from the building on the top. To do the area justice, drive Needles Highway (west to east), then go south a bit and hook up with the west end of the Custer State Park wildlife loop road, then when you finish the WLR you are within a mile of the south end of Iron Mountain Rd, which you can drive (south to north) up to Mt. Rushmore.

    • @StevenDietrich-k2w
      @StevenDietrich-k2w 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I should have added that a few miles south of the start of SD 87 (Needles Highway) on US 385 is Crazy Horse mountain. Much bigger than Mt. Rushmore but won't be finished for another 50 years at a minimum. Also, right at the end of the Wildlife Loop Rd is the State Game Lodge, which was the summer White House for President Calvin Coolidge.

    I stayed in Murdo, SD yrs ago where the auto museum is. Some old houses that had been made into a very retro motel, but I don’t think in 1991 it was retro on purpose. That was our jumping off place for the badlands and wall and Ft Pierre/ Pierre SD. The towns are divided by the time zones of mountain/central zones. So all the bats are on the ft Pierre side so they can, as it were, stay open later serving alcohol. I guess the state doesn’t allow liquor to be served after a certain time. Also the state capitol has a fountain that has natural gas spewing from it so parts of the fountain has a continuous flame. I never made it east of Pierre to Sioux Falls. One day.

      My wife and I (of 50 yrs) don't travel much. But in 2000 her best friend and husband moved to CUSTER. We went to visit once. Our favorite trip. We live in central California and visit Lake Tahoe and the redwoods and gold country and the Pacific coast. But southwest SD was amazing. Great people, beautiful country, mammoth site (in Hot Springs), and the biggest surprise was the Crazy Horse monument. We had never heard of it...and bam! This huge sculpture and the museum. SD is fabulous. @@ThroughMyLens

    That's not an illustration of a quarter pounder. Props to the sculptor, fine looking burger. But, um...?
    That jackalope with balcony was nicely done.
    Have you ever been to a park that wasn't "best"?
    Was there a reason to go to the Corn Palace? I didn't pick up on it.
    "Authentic Lakota cuisine" looks a lot like Taco Bell stepped up maybe two notches.
