It's worse, Although you are correct, he throw himself from the scaffold, used to hang him, and thus broke his own neck, thus the drawn and quartered was superfluous, he was dead already.
To be fair I imagine lots of British people think Fawkes was burnt at the stake. As noted men convicted of treason were hung drawn and quartered, but women were burnt to death because this was considered more ' gentle ' ( you'd probably die from asphyxia before you actually burnt) The bonfires may date from pagan times 5 November is close to the old pagan festival of Sahian. But probably became associated with Fawkes because of the Glorious Revolution of 1688 when William of Orange arrived on 5 November to overthrow the much disliked catholic James II, Bonfires were lit throughout England to signal the invasion had begun. This and the foiling of the gunpowder plot were seen as providential deliverance from catholic tyranny and became linked in popular imagination and culture.
Lovely to see the longship. My grandparents lived in Pegwell Bay so i know it well (its in better condition now than in the 1960s!) I used to go rockpooling in the Bay - before the hoverport covered it in concrete 😢)
The 1938 film, "The Adventures of Robin Hood," was in colour. It starred Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland. Also Basil Rathbone and Claude Rains both British like de Havilland. This film I have seen about 3 times. It is the best. I also live in Derbyshire which is less than an hour from Nottingham by bus.
The Viking longship was built from scratch in 1949 - it was based on a burial boat discovered in Gokstad, Norway. The Hugin was never under water, though it was sailed from Denmark to England.
OK - my absolute favourite would be a full day spent on Hadrian's wall. Ideally done with two cars as follows. Cars go to Housesteads Fort and a car is left there. Everyone gets in one car and you go visit the Roman Army Museum which is very very good. Then you drive to Vindolanda and do that museum - which is probably one of the best, most interesting museums in the world (Find out what happened to the fort after the Roman Empire retreated - how the unit based there carried on). Stop for coffee/lunch. Then the awesome bit. Go to the Steel Rigg car park and do one of the most wonderful walks in the world - Steel Rigg to Housesteads. The Whinn Sill ensures you have fantastic views. Spend a bit of time at Houseteads imagining what life would be like in Roman times. Get back into the car that you left at Housesteads at the start of the day and go back to Steel Rigg to pick up the car left there and return back. Staying at the twice Brewed Inn is a good option. Should be enough for 3 to 4 you tube uploads.
Hiya, thanks for your videos, I enjoy seeing you react to your UK "discoveries". One thing, Guy Fawkes was not burnt, he was hung, drawn (they do burn the entrails) then quartered. Which was the brutal execution handed out to those convicted of treason !! Cheers Chris
The Robin Hood experience building is being turned into a gym. There a better and interactive story of Robin Hood inside Nottingham Castle. Where you also get a great tour of some of the caves that are under Nottingham
I walked past this afternoon (I work up near there) and thought omg, it's gone! Was always getting round to visiting, so sad I've missed it! Mind you, did the same thing with the video game museum (know it's moved to Sheffield, but who wants to go up there!?
Although ye olde trip to Jerusalem is the oldest original inn in England, there're two other pubs in Nottingham city that have parts of them dating from the same period. Ye olde fighting cocks in St Albans has parts dating from 793, the porch house inn in Stow-On-The-Wold. has it's original fireplace dating from 947, and the old ferry boat inn in Hollywell Cambridgeshire has been serving ale on the site since 560.
Re the gunpowder plot, whilst it would have resulted in the death of the king and his son, the plan was to replace them with a Catholic Queen, a 9 year old Princess, daughter of the King.
Please leave a "thanks" to help us support the Royal British Legion 🎗(portion of our processed are donated every month!). Thank you. 💝
Stopping by to say Hi 👋.
Don't want to steal your thunder...but fawkes was hung, drawn and quartered...apart from that excellent video...
Why were people yelling “burn him” during the parade?
@TheHicksonDiaries just because of the gunpowder plot...that's all. tradition...

@@stephenlee5929It wasn't superfluous to the authorities! They loved a bit of gore and sent out a huge warning to the King's opponents.

Apparently I’m confusing Robin Hood with another movie-but thanks for keeping me honest

Huh-thanks for the clarification

Go to Lewes on November the 5th. Awesome.
Oslo has about 4 Longships in its museum in Oslo. It also has a replica of Kin Tiki .

Trip to Jerusalem, great choice!
The best!
I've always wanted to go to diggerland
I'm sure the robin hood film with Errol Flynn is in colour I have it on DVD.
Or converted to colour.
It was made in colour with a mainly British cast. Errol Flynn was Australian born. It is the best. I think 1938.
@juliantompkins9650 thank you .
