Hi Mandy, nice list. The reason a lot of British comedians appear smart is a great many British comedians learnt their craft in university review shows, as US universities turn out American Football stars, ours turn out comedians and actors. Have you seen Al Murray, he has a degree in modern history from Oxford, but performs as "The Pub Landlord" a loud-mouthed, opinionated publican. He also does history documentary tv and video podcasts.
Another female comedian who is my favourite is Sarah Millican ( although not suitable for your daughter perhaps) ; Sarah’s observations are not really jokes but are just as funny. Her husband, Gary Delaney, is the master of near the knuckle one liners too !
Great selection Mandy 😁😘 My top comedians would be: John Candy, Robin Williams, Billy Connolly, Lee Evans, Jim Carrey, Peter Kay, Sarah Millican, John Cleese, Omid Djalili, Rosanne Atkinson, Rose Matafeo. I have seen Billy Connolly/Peter Kay and Omid Djalili and I can say this for sure I have never laughed so much, I had tears of laughter running down my face and I just enjoyed myself so much during their stand up routines, I never got to see Lee Evans but he’s another one I have cried laughing watching him.
Not wanting to be rude as I am probably stating the obvious that's a very American list of British comedians. They are ones who've had some degree of success in the USA. The best British Comedians are Roney Barker, Morecambe and Wise, Rowan Atkinson Victoria Wood, and ofcourse the brilliant Peter Key. There are lots of British stand up comedians who are also brilliant but not well known in the USA
Try some Sarah Millican, Al Murray, Laurel and Hardy, The Two Ronnie's, Morecombe and Wise, more Billy Connolly and any other recommendations because they will be worth it, I promise
Charlie Chaplin seems, to me, to be much overlooked in the here and now. He’s a favourite of mine too, although I may be biased as he and I came from the same place. It’s even said - no idea if it’s true - that as a child he was (briefly) resident on the same housing estate as I was as a small boy - although some 70 years prior.
Hiya Mandy, I thought you would of like Blackadder, my favourite British comedian is Kenny Everett, watch the Cupid Stunt it's absolutely hilarious, this is Choppy
Good list but my two favourites are not on there. Micky Flanagan for stand up and the genius that is Bob Mortimer, the most naturally funny man in the UK.
OMG !! One of my most hated phrases " push the envelope " !! Why oh why can't Americans pronounced the word PYTHON correctly !!?? It's PY THUN not PY THAWN !! Ricky Gervais is very " marmite ".
No Bob Monkhouse? No Dave Allen (okay, technically he's Irish)? No Ken Dodd? No Mike Harding? No Ronnie Barker? Not even Dawn French or Victoria Wood? I can't help but wonder how exposed you have been to British comedy.
How many on that list are still relevant today? Maybe Netflix or Amazon has The Vicar of Dibley or The Two Ronnies online, and you can view clips of them on TH-cam, but how much exposure can you have when most on that list were active 30-50 years ago? I've never heard of Mike Harding, and i only know Bob Monkhouse from the game show circuit rather than the comedy one.
I hope you read this Miss hickson. , it will give you a better understand o a northern drinking culture, that you do hear to much of. I get where your coming from about your fav comidians, as the for the female side, we have some wonderful female comedians, past and presant, which were more TV based, and we have some great stand up comedians, female ones, sarah milican to name one, she is from my area the north east of england There is a reason there were not so many for a number of years or decades, from lets say the 60's through to the 90's back in the decades i mnetioned, in the nroth, and wales, not so many down south, was the workmans club, or the social club and a couple of others. these are the places comedians cut there teeth, hard people to impress, they would tour the clubs, if good enough, make a name for themselves, maybe get a summer season at a holiday cam, them onto theatres if good enough and if you lucky TV deal Through the years, the workmans club was male dominated, yes you took your wife out, for bingo, see the live shows, , to the point women were not allowed in the bar, lounge and concert room ok. not the bar, men only so it was hard for women to break through, harder than if it was for the men if you have email linked on your site i will email, its something you will not know about, the workmans club, how its run, its run by the people, not the brewery, not a manager, not an owner, the peole own it what out for an email
Its really _not_ "Bri'iain" ... Its actually _Britain_ Re female comedians... My preferred one is Sarah Millican... Of course, she does swear or to use an American descripption, uses profanity, curse words / vulgar slang...so perhaps not suited to your family audience, but for me (& my three adult offspring) she's really funny, observant, insightful, and in a way, a female equivalent to the great Ricky Gervaise in some respects, though she is not an actress, or scriptwriter. Just very funny.. 👍🏴💕🇬🇧🖖
Borat is not supposed to be liked, he's poking fun at how sexist and misogynistic society is. You have a look at how many people who should know better, but still agree with borat
Your President Elect is Hilarious. Even is Name is Funny in Britain Trump is a Little Fart in Britain. But his speeches are up there with Monty Python .From injecting Bleach .To the Continental Army protecting Airports in 1776 from the British. To the Big Tap in Canada. To his lack of how Tariffs actually work.
@thegroovetube3247 With the Jobs she held I'm Sure there is any Doubt about her Intelligence. What speeches she made were very Clear and Focused. Compared to the Future FART of a President..His Puppeteer Musk spent a lot of Money to make sure of that. A SOUTH AFRICAN born has control of America. Are you happy an immigrant is in Charge of America.? Is it OK for a White SOUTH AFRICAN to hold power in America.

Hi Mandy I enjoyed your list but I always preferred Harold Lloyd and Buster Keaton even though I am related to Charlie CHaplin.

Some of the biggest names in not only British comedy but entertainment in general. I'm sure most Brits would agree with you on most of these.
Borat is not supposed to be liked, he's poking fun at how sexist and misogynistic society is. You have a look at how many people who should know better, but still agree with borat
Charlie Chaplin was not a comedian per se, but a comedic performer.

No doubt you consider Kamala Harris to be a towering intellect.

The injudicious use of capital letters is always persuasive. Awful grammar and spelling is absolutely convincing.
Truthful = Controversial in today's climate.
