    Asian netizens don't seem to know that the fashion industry wants striking faces, not neccesarily pretty ones. The face asian people deemed beautiful would be too plain for high fashion, it what the fashion industry call "commercial beauty" rather than high fashion beauty. Fashion industry do tend to like poc models who have extreme features of their ethnicity/race because it's seen as very "exotic".
    Nah, they aren't asking for a caucasian looking asian. The model doesn't look like a typical chinese person too, she's very unique looking.

      “High fashion” doesn’t necessarily require the model to have unearthly or uncommon features. It may be a bonus to their look, but it’s not required in the field of “high fashion” modelling. Having a rare look is either a break it or make it sort of deal. Some companies look for “exotic” looks, but not as their entire lineup of models. They’re outliers among the conventionally beautiful women. Also, I don’t think that the ideal of Chinese beauty would be too plain for Vogue or other companies..

    • @lrose1310
      @lrose1310 4 ปีที่แล้ว +127

      Yea, exactly. Like Asian people like the Chinese always think the west is trying to promote Asians as ugly or weird looking. Yet the West use Asian models that fit Asian beauty standards all the time in commerical modeling, like for Victoria's Secret. It'e the high fashion brands that love models to have strange and unique faces. The west loves unique and one of a kind stuff in general. As for Vogue, I would say they like to position themselves in the market as the commerical form of high fashion. Their target is definitely more so the everyday consumer. They'll use more commercial looking models and very unique high fashion models to draw in the general western public who tend to love inclusivity of all types of looking people. Plus they'll have actors, singers and other celebrities all the time.

    I used to have a specific view on what a pretty nose should look like until Rihanna came to the picture. Not only is she already conventionally goodlooking, she also has an incredibly versatile face. Other conventionally goodlooking people can't even be versatile but she can. Rihanna effortlessly pull off various different styles with her face and she has a wide nose, relatively big and a very low nose bridge. It's everything opposite to what I used to think a "pretty" nose should look like and opposite to a lot of beauty standards.
    There isn't a pretty nose, it all depends on how it fits with your other features and the overall harmony it brings to the face. Rihanna's nose is well proportioned to her long-ish face, her wide set eyes and it is what gives her that youthful quality. If it was smaller, more pointy and taller, her face would likely look longer, her face would look more harsh or basic and there wouldn't be much that could balance out her wide set eyes. She also has a visible nose tip and its still upturned for a pretty wide low nose.
    I just think she's a fantastic example lol.

      I agree. I have a very similar wide, short, rounded and upturned nose like riri and I used to be so insecure about it. I dreamed of getting a rhinoplasty when I turned 18, but riri showed me that there is nothing wrong with my nose. I cannot see myself with a small nose. I once edited my nose to look smaller just to see what happened. It made my face look so disproportionate. My big lips looked swollen. My eyes looked crossed and my face became too wide. My nose really balanced out my face. I wouldn't change it for the world.

    I don’t know why every model from a nonwhite country has to represent the entirety of the country she is from. I don’t think any one model from America has to represent the whole of the American people. It seems kind of objectifying really, like she is Chinese & Asian first and a person second. Most models do not have 'pretty' faces like newscasters and sorority girls do, they have interesting faces made more interesting by their super thin bodies. If they want one vaguely pretty girl to represent the whole of their country they should just use that facemorph and put that on the cover of their magazines. Almost devoid of uniqueness or interest.

    im sorry. i dont really agree that the vogue chinese model was criticized bc she wasn't "caucasian enough". that was not why chinese people were upset by her casting. it is because vogue glorifies the stereotype of asians. they constantly pick models with the most stereotypical "asian" features. they are upset because they want a representation of a chinese woman who looks like what the average chinese woman looks like- not what the western idea of asian is. yes it is rude for others to comment that the model is ugly, because she is not. but at the same time, high-fashion has always played into the stereotype of chinese/asian women looking suuuppper "ethnic" despite not being the reality. for vogue to constantly place women who are stereotypically "asian looking" plays into the western interpretation of asians as a whole

      @Tara Lang Of course Vogue doesn't want the "average classical Chinese beauty" on their covers, that's not striking/evocative/"exotic" enough for Western-centric high fashion. But think about it: if China owned a high fashion publication that was more globally prestigious than Vogue, they also wouldn't want the "average classical Caucasian beauty" on their US or UK covers either. If China only wanted to put the most stereotypically "ethnic" white women on the cover, and they all looked like Eleanor Roosevelt or Lena Dunham, would you still be thinking, "wow, China REALLY knows high fashion, no wonder they only put weird/fascinating/interesting-looking white faces like Eleanor Roosevelt's on their magazine covers!" And that's where Chinese netizens are giving the side-eye.

      @@QOVESStudio Duuuude that's not what you were saying in your video, though :/ You said that Chinese netizens are complaining that western-celebrated Asian models don't look "white enough," when in fact this OP just rightfully pointed out that the most acclaimed "classical" beauties in China (like actress Liu Yifei) do NOT have "white" features, but instead have very traditional Chinese features. YES, Chinese people 100% struggle with internalized racism (thanks to centuries of the same Western imperialism that also perpetuates anti-Blackness) but it's such a condescending, racist, and unsupported claim that "the Chinese" as a society ONLY value white features, when in fact the women considered most "classically beautiful" in China have completely Asian features. It's also really annoying that you'd choose to use such a bad example to criticize "teh Chin3se" for sometimes (even often!) pedestalizing white-exclusive or mostly-limited-to-white features. Also, no need to sneer at Chinese netizens for worshipping European features, especially since your example is hardly proof of it. European-centric beauty standards aren't something every baby is born with, it's THE most harmless byproduct of Western imperialism and subjugation of non-white peoples starting in 1492...the worse ones being nations stuck serving the West as massive sweatshop farms and plantations full of cheap, disposable labor, IF they're not being sanctioned, occupied, and drone-bombed to death.

    • @SmileRainbow12
      @SmileRainbow12 4 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      @@berbasilk5906 I'm really glad to see commentary from another non-white person who's also interested in what features/faces are considered beautiful! Adding on to your speculation that people (whether in India or the West) seem to find you prettier because you might have features that are mostly limited to European faces, I've also seen a form of internalized racism (whether anti-Black or anti-Asian) where these non-white groups consider ALL classically beautiful people (symmetrical noses/faces, aligned non-recessed jaws, shapely rounded foreheads for women, etc) to be "white-looking," regardless of ethnicity. I think this happens when people internalize the myth that the most beautiful people in the world are ALL white, with only a few rare exceptions, thanks to the global association of whiteness/Westernness/Europeanness with wealth and prestige. I can give lots of evidence to show this: classically good-looking East Asian celebrities are often praised by interviewers/fans for "looking like a Westerner" when a lot of them have 100% Asian features...they're just arranged in a way that satisfies universal symmetry/alignment/ratio standards of beauty. But white-worship doesn't JUST cause non-white people to value mostly-limited-to-European features over their own features. It can also cause people to think that ALL classically beautiful people "look white," even if they absolutely don't. It's not like every non-white ethnicity is made up of its beautiful whiter-looking people and average "ethnic-looking" people. I'd be suspicious when people compliment you for "looking white" if you think you look unmistakably and 100% Indian, but are just pretty. YES, it's possible that you're celebrated for having more ambiguously white features, but it's equally likely that in our Western-imperialism-dominated world, people struggle to imagine that non-white people can even be classically beautiful in the way they know white people can.

What a lot of these Chinese citizens are saying is that Vogue is choosing conventionally attractive Caucasian models, but choosing unconventionally attractive Chinese models. So of course, many Chinese citizens would be outraged that Vogue chooses yet again another unconventional looking model.

    I don't think they're criticising the model for not looking "caucasian enough". They're upset that Vogue always picks conventionally attractive white models but chose a conventionally unattractive Chinese model. Asian people get barely enough representation in the media as is, so they're not happy that the one model Vogue chooses perpetuates a bunch of unrealistic stereotypes rather than looking like an average (well obviously very above average) Asian person.
    She's beautiful in an ethereal, other-worldly way, but she clearly does not fit any classic convention of beauty.

    Reality check needed. I live in East Asia and have never seen a face like that, even in the countryside where people do not get plastic surgery.
    Whether or not eurocentricism exists when it comes to beauty standards, anyone who's seen actual humans in Asia can tell that this model does not represent the average Asian girl at all. That is the reason for the reactions from Chinese people.

      Yeahhhh the thing with high fashion models is that they usually look VERY unique, that's why they are chosen, it makes people look twice. High fashion models tend to look like aliens no matter what race they are. They do this shit with white models too, there are some super odd looking scavdanavian and German models out there lemme tell you! Usually with crazy bone structure and super far-appart eyes and they sure as hell don't represent eurocentric beauty ideals.

    • @meralee1213
      @meralee1213 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@KaylaNoelle1 I agree that it's not about eurocentricism. High fashion does adhere to features that they assume people covet like height and a very slim body, but tend to go for an unusual face for the "ethereal factor". The people who reacted wanted to see themselves being accurately represented in a Western fashion magazine, while the model looks very unique. Whether they are right about reacting that way is not my place to judge :)

    Monolids were deemed as beautiful in ancient china. Every ancient Chinese portrait of women had monolids, the 4 beauties of china were all also depicted with monolids. If u had double eyelids it meant that u had “barbarian” genes of the Mongolians and that was frowned upon as the chinese and Mongolians didn’t really get along, pretty sure back then everyone in china only had monolids. And white skin? It was a symbol of the upperclass as they didn’t need to go outside to do labour. Ok thats the end of my history lesson.

We all know the (kind of eurocentric) golden ratio's for a face, but actually seeing in what way a face can DEVIATE from those standards is extremely informative and helpful. The features don't even have to match completely, the deviation from the norm is usually all our brain needs to recognise a face!

For instance the fashion industry also does this to blacks where they pick a very exotic looking black woman, that most of us don’t find attractive and hold that person up to be the standard of African beauty. They will pick the most conventional beautiful European faces but with other ethnicities they pick a weird and unusual looking person to represent the whole race. It’s not about ethnic people looking for the most European versions of themselves, it’s just that most ethnic people do not look like the people the fashion industry choose to pick up and represent, and not in a good way

      Models are not meant to look average, they are meant to look unusually pretty to capture your attention. And I have never seen a European person(irl) look even close to what a European model typically looks like.
      Also they're are SO MANY beautiful black and asain models out there who most people find attractive, so that point doesnt really stand.

I had surgery, but the doctor didn't do a very good job and my nose was still a bit crooked to the side and bulbous on that side. The sad part is, I had a twin sister whose nose did not get broken. One time we were out at a club and the photographer actually waved me out of the photo and took it just of my twin sister. God, that stung. Another time, I was on some public chat and a guy just started in on how huge my nose was. It was awful and humiliating, especially because I wasn't born this way. I've looked into getting more surgery but it was really traumatic and painful and even more so when the bandages came off and I kept waiting and waiting for my beautiful nose to appear and it never did.

While I think the model is beautiful and while I do think there are some standards which appear to be due to Eurocentric beauty standards (big eyes), it would be unfair to say they dislike all East Asian features.
    The standard of beauty is not exactly the same as the West.
    The criticism is coming from a place of being fed up of being exoticised be Western media. I don't agree with calling this model "not beautiful", because I definitely think she is, however don't just assume the Chinese just want to look white.

    Netizens weren’t mad because Vogue didn’t promote a Chinese model with euro-centric Chinese features whatever that mean (it means nothing in fact😂) they were mad because the traditional Han beauty (95% of Chinese are Han) was not represented (same with Korean models working in the West) and the backlash is even stronger when Asian models with darker skin or freckles are chosen to represent the ‘Asian beauty’ by western brands or publications. Because that’s the worst for them, I grew up in Japan and China (my parents had to work in those countries) and my Latin complexion was always considered as way too* dark for them ( beside the fact that I always had long curly hair, also looked upon).

    Is there any way you can fix your nose shape without surgery? My eyes and eyebrows are a striking point of my face, but my nose basically ruins all chances of someone being able to face me without turning around. That applies to me, at least.

    • @Ruby-xk8kn
      @Ruby-xk8kn 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Depends on what you want to fix about it, you can get filler on your nose to soften a hump or to give your tip more projection or to correct asymmetry, it's a cosmetic procedure but not invasive like surgery

    This leaves me completely confused and astonished, when I was a child people used to mock me about my big nose, over the years people stopped mocking my big nose and seem a lot more attracted to it, and I just found out through your videos that my face is almost perfect (perfect simetry, perfect porportion through each section, and very good angles including a very defined jawline). So thanks a lot, my insecurities were mainly about my nose, and you solved them all through your videos, I am a lot happier of how I look and found out that I am actually very attractive, probably people mocked me about my nose when I was younger because we were kids and we just mock everything that is slightly of the regular.

    I can’t agree with the part on the Asian Vogue model. I grew up in China and I can tell you I’ve never really seen someone with a face that unusual, who is it benefiting beauty standard wise people with eyes so far part where you can park a car? Like be real no one looks like that conventionally and that is not the norm. The critique is on how the fashion industry “exotify “ Asian models where they have to be looking like they are from mars to be considered editorial. Like just genuinely go on a trip to China or something and you’ll realize that this kind of model isn’t representing anyone period.

    • @MadokaMagia
      @MadokaMagia 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Also really offended whey you suggested that those VS models looked white and automatically assumed that the people in the comment section looked similar to the Vogue model. It just shows that you have a preconceived idea that this is an average “Asian face” when it can’t be further from the truth. By that standard I guess I’m no longer Chinese nor any of my friends since they all look, quote on quote “white”.
