Rod, Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful! Bocote is an amazing wood. It makes fantastic grips for your handgun of choice. Keep the aspidistra flying! God bless. Semper fi, Paul
Just enough for the blanks, and was able to keep the thumper at a good length too. Oh yes, love the skew, especially when sharpened properly, lol... the second run was so much better! Thanks, Doug!
Hi Rod. You've just reminded me that I have a few pen kits in stock and several wooden pen blanks. I'd forgotten the joy of making pens as they make such appreciative gifts for friends so I must get down to it soon. Also, I'm pleased that the recent lessons I gave you on working with the skew (keep it sharp) are paying off :-). Semper Fi
Between the thumper and these 4 pens you really did that hunk of Bacote proud. That really is a beautiful piece of wood. And except for the shavings on the floor not much waste. Well done. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
Great job. For Sierra style blanks I have given up the pen mandrel and switched to Sierra turn between centers bushings. They work great with no wobble. Thanks for posting.
Hi Rod, Great video. Didn't know you turned pens. Did notice a slight flex in your mandrel but didn't appear to affect the end result. I also liked your trick with the dots on the paper.
Thank you! Oh, yes, love turning pens. Yep, slight bend on the mandrel, I'll replace it eventually... Funny, I hadn't thought to mention my little epoxy measuring trick, but it's handy 😊
rod nice pens my friends i love that wood its very pretty hope u r doing well brother! u take care of yourself ok? just remember, God loves u, God bless. Chris
Hi Rod, You know I love a good pen and I absolutely LOVE those four. I used some of the Bocote in my video from the wood you kindly sent me and it was a dream to turn. Is your Mandrel slightly bowed as I saw some movement in it on the Headstock end by the blank? Lovely video my friend. Take care Rod. Cheers, Huw
Great eye, Huw! yep, my mandrel is a touch off of straight... any worse it would be unusable. I'll get a new one as soon as I remember too... lol. Thanks my friend!
Looks easy, but I’ve found them harder than I expected. Very pretty wood. Wondering if you have a preference between CA or epoxy? Depends on the wood I suppose. As always, I appreciate the time and advice. Romans 8:18
I actually prefer CA glue, medium or thick for pen barrels, but I'm out! Not sure how I let that happen, lol... But 5 minute epoxy does the job just fine too. I tend to give it a couple hours past that "5 minute" mark though. Thank you!
I haven't had that experience with bocote, it has maintained a striking contrast from what I've seen. I wonder why yours turned grey... Sun exposure? Over how much time? I'd love to hear more about that.
...such a cool looking wood...and you created great looking pens...👍
Matt
Thank you very much!
I like how you use the little circles on the sandpaper to measure your epoxy, I'm stealing that trick.
I didn’t even notice that. Good eye. 😊
haha! Great eye indeed! I didn't even think to mention that... Thank you!
Rod,

Thank you, Paul! It would make amazing grips... Thinking...
Very nice pens. Bocote is one of my favorite woods for pens. Also, I like the Sierra style kit.
Thanks very much!
I love turning bocote; it's so pretty and fun to work with.
I'm with you on that!
Great save to cut that chunk off the longer blank. It’s good to see someone else turn pens with a skew. Great job turning these.

I take all of your instruction to heart... especially since you've made your own thumper... 🤪 Thanks my friend!
Beautiful as always!
Thank you! 😊
What a beautiful woodpattern and astonishing nice pens. Must be a joy writing with these.
Thank you so much!
Very well done Rod 👍. Barcote is a beautiful looking wood. Both the pens and the thumper turned out great.
I can't believe the grain pattern. Nature makes the most beautiful things.
It's a beautiful wood for sure!
Nice, nice pens. You always do such good work. Thanks for sharing your work.

Nice pens, Top! I love Bocote... used some for the handle of my carving mallet.
thanks Billy! Gorgeous handle no doubt!

Very nicely turned Ron. Thank you mate.🤠
Thanks, mate!
Beautiful pens Rod.
Thank you, Jack!
A fellow oval skew user! One of my favorites that you just don't see getting much attention out there.
Yes! Agreed, I find they provide better, or smoother maybe, movement on the tool rest.
Really beautiful!❤️🤗🐝
Thank you! 😊
@@RHumphrey You’re welcome❤️🤗🐝
Beautiful wood and finish!
Thank you very much!
First time I have ever seen anyone make a pen. Very interesting.

The pen is mightier.. but the thumper hurts more!
it depends on which one you get poked in the eye with... 😮
Very lovely, good work. Is the pen mightier than your “thumper”? Both can be effective on changing one’s attitude is my guess?
Very posh !!

I dislike bocote. Looks good when you turn it then it turns a nearly uniform dark grey. usually in only a few days. Zebrawood retains its stripes.

Spoiler Alert??
I'm not at liberty to say...
