In this video I make 16, 24, and 32 segment count rings using the Wedge Pro. Super easy and safe.
And then I turn a pretty candy dish using an unknown wood base, figured maple, and Sapele. Flashy from top to bottom!
In this Video, I also briefly show you the RZ 2.5 Mask. A super nice, reusable, replaceable inner filter, no mask fogging, and comfortable. It is made in America by a company that gives back and cares about your lungs.
Maybe most importantly, you get a quality product at a very low cost.

You made it look so simple, and great tutorial.
My focus with the Wedge-Pro was to make it very safe for beginners and simple to setup.
And what a beautiful bowl!
@@Q1WP Quite impressive! I like, I like! It's gonna go on my wish list.
Of course, no kickbacks! That's why we use a riving knife. Ha ha ha.
@@drgruber57 lol! Nice play on words! 🤣🤪
WOW!! what an amazing awesome job. Thanks for sharing! I am now getting into turning wood more often, you inspired me!
The shoutouts to fellow woodworkers was so nice ❤ you have such a talented community 🪵🤩
Incredibly talented indeed! It's very humbling, and all of you are appreciated very much, woodworkers or not ❤️😊
Thank you for a comprehensive review! As a layman I found it understandable which says a lot about your clarity. My one and only lathe project was in high school woodshop in 1984 😅
That was a great demonstration. Beautiful chatoyance on the bowl, too!! That thing POPPED with every move.
Thank you very much!
As many of us, over the years I have made several wedgie sleds, just yesterday I set up my sled to start making some rings for Christmas presents. Im really impressed with this demonstration. Its time to purchase a new wedgie sled, I really like this. Thank you Rod for demonstrating this!! I may share your video on the website to show others this new device.
Thanks, Tom & Anette! This Wedge Pro takes the old "wedgie sleds" to a whole new level. I've made my own in the past as well, and seen many at woodworking shows, but none compare to this one, not even the Rockler sled. I don't have a dog in the fight though, not affiliated or sponsored. This is just my opinion. You're welcome to share of course, always appreciated!
After watching this video I decided to try this wedge-pro. I have had it ordered now about 3 days , looking forward to trying it out . Thanks for a very informative video.
Thats great, looks like it will work well
@@carrollanderson7358
Thanks Rod. A very impressive demonstration of both the sled and bowl turning. I‘m looking forward to using the sled.
You're very welcome and thank you!
I received mine last week, I can’t believe how accurate this wedge pro is and I love the safety of fingers protected from blade. If you love segmented turning as I do I would incourage you to purchase one. Awesome sled 👍
Simply Gorgeous!
Thank you very much!
Beautiful bowl, Rod. Nice job with that. Great wedge pro sled demonstration too. Take care. 😊
Thanks very much, Rob!
Great tool suggestion! Thanks for sharing this! Semper Fidelis!
Thank you, and you're very welcome! Semper Fi!
I watched your video a while back I now have one have tried it and it’s great Tom from england
Really enjoy your videos, and especially the laid-back, intelligent narration. Quality of your work is admirable.
I am surprised that you have so positively reviewed this product. It works fine, yes, but... My two issues with the piece are, first, the price, and second, the unnecessary complication of the tool. To support a doctor friend of mine in his fundraisers for humanitarian work around the world, I send him about a hundred bowls a year; most of them segmented at 24, and have for the past eight years have used one commercially produced segment tool to do the job. The tool to which I refer is currently $49 , and a whole set of 16, 18, 20, 24, 32, 36, 40, 48 segment wedges is $99. With a bit of basic skills in the shop a relatively new amateur can make the sled and stop for less than $10 in material. My set up is safe, and actually quite a bit faster to use. There are videos showing in simple detail how to construct the necessary sled and stop, and a clever online search will quickly lead one to the product I mention. I will omit the actual brand name, so as to not be removed for inappropriate advertising.
Semper Fi indeed.
Gorgeous Bowl!❤
Thank you! 😊
Another beautiful piece of art. Thank you for the inspiration.
Thank you very much!
Absolutely beautiful bowl! I love it!
Thank you so much, Vicki! 😊
Now that's a useful invention.
I gotta get one
This looks like a great tool. Thanks for reviewing it.
It really is! You're welcome 😊
Great looking bowl Rod! And thx for the demo of the sled. Take care.
Thank you & thanks for watching!
Excellent presentation ! Beautiful bowl! Thankyou sir!
Thank you kindly!
That is amazing.
That sled is impressive. Now on my “Please, Santa” list. Beautiful shimmer in those rings!
Thanks very much, Valerie!
Nice tight segments. The bowl has beautiful fit and finish. Thanks Rod.
Thank you kindly! They really are nice and tight, and even in person the joints are mostly invisible. The figured grain helps with that, but I was legitimately impressed.
That is amazing. I wish for one of those. Beautiful bowl!
Thank you so much, Judy!
Looks like a great sled. Thanks for sharing, Rod.
And thank you for watching! 😊
I'm definitely getting one of these bad boys!
Beautiful Bowl what a fantastic piece of kit that Wedge Pro is
Thaks very much, Colin!

Thank you! Good to see you too, Don!
Lovely bowl and the jig made it look easy too.

Beautiful bowl Rod and a excellent job making and turning it as well!!
I enjoyed your video and I gave it a Thumbs Up

Work of art!
You're very kind, thank you!
Nicely done, great tip on that jig! Stay safe.
Thanks very much! You too!
Looks like a great piece of equipment. And most definitely a beautiful bowl for sure! Enjoyed watching my friend. See ya soon Brother!!☕️
Thanks brother!
Gorgeous bowl. Tool is pretty slick
Thanks, Bill!
Well Rod I think you have just sold me on that piece of kit. Excellent piece of turning as well fantastic job.
I can say I've used this tool on a few projects now with great success and precision. I don't have a dog in the hunt, but I'm confident you'll enjoy it and appreciate the quality. Thank you!
Wow! Very cool!
Thank you! Cheers!
Fantastic job!
Thank you very much!
how did I miss this episode! Beautiful bowl!
Thank you so much!
Hi Rod, I really like the sled. It looks so well made and with all the angles and number of segments already there for you makes it so easy for someone to make segmented rings.
It is just under £300 here in the UK so is a bit out of my price range for the amount of segmenting I do.
The bowl looks beautiful Rod.
Great video my friend and the pen is astonishing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Take care my friend.
Cheers, Huw
Thanks very much, Huw! It's a great investment for someone that plans to do a lot of segmenting, you're right. Yes! That pen is really amazing! It looks great right along with your pens!
Absolutely incredible ❤
Thank you!
That's an awesome tool. Your bowl is very beautiful have a great weekend ✌️
Thanks, Cookie! You too!
Very nice bowl, and a great machine.
Thank you very much, Mark!
Bowl turned out great. Nice wedge sled
Thanks very much!
Beautiful bowl ❤
Thanks very much, Maddie!
Amazing maple always beautiful
Agreed, maple seldom lets me down. It's a pleasure to turn.
Excuse the Aussie vernacular, but that bowl is bloody beautiful mate!! Love your videos and your work. Keep them coming PLEASE!!
I appreciate that very much, Greg! Cheers, mate!
Very nice great information thanks.
Thank you so much!
Turned out great. I may have to get one of the jigs.
Thanks very much!
As a long time segmenter and user of the wedgie sled I must say your new sled is quite interesting. I can see why you are impressed by it. If I were just getting ready to begin segmenting I would certainly consider this new product. However at $345 it is a bit expensive. One can make a wedgie sled and purchase the wedges for a $100 or so. Which ever direction I were to go I would also purchase some software to go along. My software choice is Woodturner Pro. It allows you to design your project and provides all the calculations required for creating the perfect segments. BTW, the bowl you created for this video is beautiful. Nothing like a nice piece of maple for an outstanding finish. You certainly did this piece proud. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
Thanks, Glen! Yep, I've made my own wedge sleds too, but this is levels above those types. Always appreciated, my friend.
What a great new helper. Thank you for your explanations and showing how to use this tool. What I like best is the safety which this tool gives while cutting. And I always Like veryuch what you turn. Of course the segmented bowls are the "Mercedes" under your objects for me. Especially with all that preparative work. The more detail the prettier as always... And that pen got me thinking of the nut cracker... Dont know why...
Thank you very much, I appreciate that!
Definitely looks like that wedgie sled would be a nice addition to any wood turner’s shop. Thanks for sharing 👍.
Thanks very much, Scott!
Parabéns muito lindo trabalho
very tight joints .. very good work ..
I appreciate it, thank you!
ESPECTACULAR, FELICITACIONES
Muchas gracias mi amigo!
That Wedge Pro certainly eliminates the math required and, more importantly, eliminates the trial and error of getting the cut angles just right.
And nothing beats a drum sander for getting the glued segment layers even anf flat.
Thanks, Rob! Many years of tool acquisition and budgeting, the drum sander is super handy!
Im in college trying to get a career in engineering. Im taking industrial maintenance classes this year. Been watching for a long time. God bless.
Thank you so much, I appreciate your long-term viewership! I hope your hard work and study finds you success!
Thanks Rod! Once I show this video to Paul, I’ll know immediately what to get him for Christmas. 😊 What do you get a man who has every gadget already in his boat shop? This well thought out device!! Hugs and blessings all around. 😉 ❤️
Ps, stunning bowl!!
Thanks very much, Robin! He'll like it for sure.
What a nifty gadget!
Very handy! I'll be using it often. 😊
To find segment size. 1 times pi 3.14 times radius of ring divided by number of segments
It’s s great tool. It’s also obscenely expensive. I’ve never had issues with my wedgie sled. But I can also appreciate having a well made and designed tool. I guess it’s whatever works for you.
Thanks, Andrew! I couldn't agree more with using whatever works for you! 😊
this thing is genius
Lots of thought went into it for sure!
The Wedge Pro is one of most impressive aid to woodturning that I've seen and I certainly intend to buy one. The bowl is just beautiful and a tribute to your turning skills. I live in Ireland and summer has well and truly gone so I intend to spend the autumn and winter in my workshop.
Kindest regards and Semper Fi.
Thank you, my friend! Yes, Summer is over as of tomorrow. Now that we have that over with, on to my two favorite seasons!! Be well and enjoy 😊
I've already ordered and paid for Wedge Pro. Us Irish don't hang about.😀😀@@RHumphrey
Nice
This is pretty nifty. I’m sure you’re going to get a lot of work out of this thing.
I like your poetry segment at 17:56
Very light coat of stain
To highlight the grain
(and some chemical odors
to mess with your brain) 😆
haha! Someone might have too much time on their hands... 🤣
Hi I missed where you got your jig for the segmented bowls . Great work love the segmented bowl.

Thanks very much! here's a link: q1wp.com/product/wedge-pro/
incredible jig, really wonderful, do you ship to Mexico?
To what size segments can you cut what diameter?
I personally prefer the two fence style of sled as i don’t need to flip the piece of wood. But that is definitely a well made tool. There are many nice sled designs out there so maybe you could show others styles in the future. Just a thought.
Mike is developing a two-fence sled as well, just fyi. I see advantages to both, in that when you flip the wood it gives opportunity for a bit more grain flash... or conversely, with no flip the grain can look completely uniform. I appreciate the suggestion, and probably would do so. I've use home-made wedge sleds, cut segments with a table saw, mitersaw (chopsaw) and band saw. This is the most precise so far. Not trying to sell, just saying. Thanks very much! 😊
@@RHumphrey precision will come from a lot of factors of course. A good 80 tooth blade is important as well. I think once you get your sled dialed in you can cut very precise segments. Thanks.
@@turningwiththewoods couldn't agree more! Nice to talk shop 😊thank you!
Nice looking bowl. Keep it out of moisture and temperature extremes though, such a large solid base has been known to cause cracking due to movement across the grain going contrary to the rings movement. Best ways to avoid problems is a smaller solid base or a floating base. Still a fine example of a first segmented bowl.
Thanks very much! This base didn't end up as a big thick clunker, just so you know, lol, and this is FAR from my first segmented bowl. Been segmenting for years. It was my first one using this new Wedge-Pro sled, though. I appreciate your comment and that you've shared your personal experience. 😊
@@RHumphrey its not so much the thickness as it is diameter on the base. Are you an AAW member? The Segmented Woodturners chapter of the AAW? The subject has been discussed quite a bit, love to have you on board to share with us.
@@garybeasley4885 Hi Gary, no, not a member. I'll can't deny the value of the shared information and expertise involved there (AAW), please don't misunderstand. I'm only going off my own experience, through success and failure. I very much appreciate your input and experience as well.
Thank you Rod for highlighting this new jig. I am super impressed with your finished bowl, specifically the close-up of the figured maple rings. I didn’t see one gap between any of the segments in any of the 3 rings. Maple (light colored woods in general) will show-off a gap between really easy. So your bowl with those segments right off the saw was very impressive. Plus I love the safety aspect of this jig. How much is that worth when cutting hundreds and thousands of segments. Great work Rod. Thank you again for sharing.
Thank you very much, Mike! I agree. Even in person right next to my eyeballs it's hard to see the joints in the maple. Very precise 😊
Beautiful bowl, I love the segmented idea. I'm going to look into that sled. Thanks Rob
I did my first segmented bowl last year and went quite intrepid for my first. But I made my own cutting sled, pretty much dedicated to 16 segment rings. I managed to get it dialed in perfectly without too much initial error. But this wedge pro looks pretty slick!
I wouldn't mind having one of those.
I especially like the maple and sapele rings, Rod. The base.... eh...
Good to see another turning video from you. God bless you too!
Thank you very much!
This looks like one of the most practical tools ever invented. Thanks for sharing!
Stuart
I couldn't agree more, Stuart! Thanks for watching!
Looks like a great sled. The rings look dead on from here.
Thanks very much, Doug!
Thanks for review. Can’t seem locate an order site for the jig, can you provide?

What a great device. It should prove helpful to turners everywhere. Also, that bowl is beautiful.👍👍
Thank you so much!
The WedgePro looks like a nice, well-made sled for segmented turning. It looks like it would simplify things quite a bit.
If I were on the market for one, I would definitely consider buying this tool.
Nice bowl you turned while using this new toy!!
👍👍👍👍👍
Semper Fi
Thank you, brother!
It's not needed, it's overkill. I can cut all the segments and not have to keep reaching in and taking the pieces out of the way. Build a ramp next to the blade, and use a wedge sled. Can make for 10 dollars. I made three sleds when making them have set for different angles.
Save your money. Use a digital ruler to set them.
Rod really nice bowl as for the sled well it might be the Biz but the price will make it to expensive for people ( me being one ) to justify
It's true, the price is up there, but I honestly understand why now that I've used it. Thanks very much! 😊
Very well thought out and a very fair price given what it does and the safety features
That's handy as hell for the Mad Scientist wood turners out there! Just take your time..................
haha! Yes indeed! 😊
OOOOOooOoo RRaaaaaahhhhhhh!
Lowell
It looks like a great tool but the price is much for what it is. There is maybe $40 worth of plastic in it and a couple screws. I think I will make my own.
lol, $40 worth of plastic and a couple screws... Yes, it's expensive, but that's not an accurate description at all. Not sure why the negativity, but have fun making your own, there's lots of turners and other woodworkers that do. Send pics when you get it done, I enjoy seeing what my fellow woodworkers are making 😊
2 watches....... I've considered this myself...... What's your reasoning? 😂
lol, I need the balance... Seriously though, just one watch. The other is a bracelet with the Marine Corps Emblem (dear to my heart)
$345 bucks? Nope
Nice
Thank you!
