  • Project Arcturus was an attempt by the Ancients in Atlantis (or Lantean's) to extract vacuum energy from our local spacetime, as opposed to Zero Point Modules (ZPMs), which extracts zero-point energy from an artificially-created region of subspace, much like a universe in a bottle.

      actually no - Asuran replicators did not have latest Ancient technology. their ships were somewhat weaker then last generation of Ancient ones.
      And well - its likely possible to modify hyperspace engine to create a hyperspace/subspace tunnel rather then just moving ship into subspace trough a "portal"... Just different parametres of the multidimensional field McKay talks about when they try to dispose of the gate attacked by Anubis.
      (and really - sending an active already supercharged stargate linked by a subspace wormhole, trough a multidimensional field managing transition between real space and subspace is kind of crazy... but as Jonas pointed out - at least risk of hyperspace engine blowing up could be removed... its kind of crazy anyway...)
      Stargates just create micro wormhole and send in matterstream trough which is reasembled on te other side, requiring only small quantum of energy as the microwormhole is few particles thick...

      @@HugoBolzer i think the newer reactors might be able to withstand/harness the unstability of naquadriah.
      my answer to why the Lanteans never had more ZPMs is that they were supplied by an even more advanced race that created something that would give off the energy signature that the Ancients detected and launched Destiny to investigate.
      the Asurans/replicators had all the time to recreate a method for creating ZPMs after the Lanteans left Atlantis. if the ZPMs was just "replicated" using their own material, it would have been attracted to the giant Neutronium blob in the battle of Asuras. But Todd managed to get a few off world.
      these even more advanced beings probably re-created the universe after a heat Death. they mastered Dimensional manipulation and probably time as well. they put their entire civilization into a "pocket" dimension and reset the world. over the Eons, they noticed Destiny and made contact. they see that the Ancients are a race with potential and shared their tech(ZPMs). with an energy source of unmatched scale, the Ancients built City Ships and started to rapidly advance their own tech. the plague occured in milky way and they left for Pegasus while resetting life using the device on Dakka. but their Hubris brought about the Wraith.
      the alliance broke and the Advanced Beings stopped supplying the ZPMs. and to prevent their legacy from falling into any other races hands... they deployed the Drone Fleet which is the final Antagonist for Destiny show.

That einstein himself and some others was working on a similar to the ZPM but they suddenly stoped,maybe they achieved it mabye not,also the rail gun was showen on this series about 10 years or more before going public,weird but true, sometimes people like the hacker Gary and his claims the the nasa has a seperate program with interstelar ships makes my mind blow,interstelar travel would be more easyer to achieve with a huge power source like a ZPM

      Arcturus was intended as a power source, not a doomsday bomb. It only wound up that way by failure. To use your thermonuclear analogy, the Ancients wanted a fusion reactor but lost control of the reaction, so it turned into a Soviet-style "Tsar Bomba".
      Plus, trying to kill your enemy by blowing up whole star systems (and every living thing in them) seems like the very height of psychosis. It's like deliberately nuking every single square inch of Earth just in case there **might** be a bad guy lurking under a rock somewhere. You'll make mortal enemies out of every other intelligent race in the galaxy, not just the Wraith. That's not to mention that, since your enemies the Wraith are also advanced in spacefaring, you'll have a really hard time getting them all with this strategy. Blow up your first few systems and it won't take long for the Wraith to start keeping the bulk of their forces mobile in space, whereabouts unknown.

      That probably could've worked, too. But the Ancients were just such terrible tacticians, deeply ignorant in the art of war. It's somewhat ironic, if you think about it, the way we venerate the Ancients and strive to be more like them, because were the Ancients back then more like us, I believe they would've defeated them. Despite the Wraith's numeric superiority, in war numbers alone confirm no advantage. The Ancients had the firepower, but they lacked strategy and sound tactics. Basically, the Ancients sucked at combat and had no idea how to conduct war.

    The dangers of extracting energy from the quantum vacuum isn't a release of hard radiation or an explosion but of a vacuum state decay which would spread indefinitely at the speed of light changing the cosmic constants perhaps to the point where the physical laws no longer allowed matter to exist but I guess everything just disappearing isn't as dramatic as an explosion.

    • @eds1942
      @eds1942 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think that the problem is that they attempted to harness the virtual energy released when virtual particles annihilate each other in the vacuum of deep space. And then turning that virtual energy into real energy, which violates the Conservation of Matter and Energy which states that the total amount of Energy and Matter must remain a constant. That violation forced the Universe to fix the issue by indiscriminately canceling out an equivalent amount of real energy and matter as the amount of virtual energy that they stole, near the place where that energy was created. But yeah, this is a scifi show and explosions are more dramatic.

    Eventually even SGC could have made this work. All they need is an alternate reality drive (Something we know that McKay could build and something he has actually seen schematics for from the Season 5 Episode. Then they create a few automated ships with one of those on, tell it to pop throughout all universes until it finds one that is not inhabited (Which admiteddky could take awhile - though McKay is quoted as saying that the chance of actually finding a galaxy that would be inhabited is actually quite minute, so maybe it would not take that long. Then they simply do what they did in SGA. Send the exotic particles into this other unieverse - and having no problems as you ahve already checked its uninhbaited. There you go. UNLIMITED POWERRR.

    • @nehorlavazapalka

      A single ZPM could vaporize billions of Hives anyway. It's a plot hole - they should have made it canon that the ancients were at war with the wraith but didn't want to kill them, i.e. depleting hive's weapons without killing the wraith.. etc....

    • @sstimulants
      @sstimulants 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      nehorlavazapalka I'm really confused where your pulling all these ridiclous ideas from. A single ZPM could vaporize trillions of hives? How does that work? A wraith hive ship is far superior to a Goa'uld vessel, And yet just several uses of the Antarctic chair system lead to the near complete depletion of a ZPM. The ZPMs are very powerful, but they were never meant to be a curb stomp infinite energy source. They were meant to represent great, but limited power - and how more advance technology drains power far quicker. Now if the use of the Antarctic Chair just a few times, prsirily agents the Goa'uld, is enough to deplete a ZPM, and wraith hives are stronger than a Goa'uld ship, then clearly your wrong about ZPMs meaning the ancient should have simply win the war. Please don't comment on matters you clearly don't fully understand or won't listen to the perfectly good reasons and stories we have been given by the shows throughout the years.

    • @jfbeam
      @jfbeam 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Not likely. And they did actually try that -- tunnel the "waste" into a neighboring universe, but that didn't work out as planned. The problem wasn't that it was spewing radiation over a populated solar system, but that it was dumping exotic matter into subspace that could result in the destruction of that entire universe. How a ZPM actually works, and how it doesn't have the same problem, is not explained anywhere. (nor is how they're built, or the workshop that creates them -- the replicator world certainly had one.)

    • @sstimulants
      @sstimulants 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      jfbeam I literally made that point - the Tunnell was extremely dangerous to anything livj g in the otherside and was causing catastrophic damage to that universe - though in paticular the Pegasus Galaxy - but according to Stagrate logic most other universes should not be populated - so who cares if you destroy an unpopulated galaxy if it means unlimited power and all the huge revolutionary advantages that would bring to a society - especially when you think about the horrors that threaten most life in the Stargate Unieverse (E.G Wraith). Personally I'm doubt the destruction if an entire galaxy would be worth unlimited power - but with the technology at the SGCs or Ancients disposal, the technology of Arcturus would be eventually viable and allow and allow for essentially unlimited power. And yes I know ZPMs were never particularly explained beyond 'A contained pocket of subspace from what it extracts Zero Point Energy' because SCIENCE!!! BUT the reason they didn't have the same problem was becuasethe issues of exotic matter particles was apparently only a thing when extracting Zero Point Energy from the actual universe itself... and that's difficult from a contained pocket of subspace... somehow. It's science fiction afterall, t least they tried to incorporate basic science and actual theoretical science unlike other universes - like Star Trek and Star Wars

      It's understandable they never learned how to make them. Imagine if they did... It would basically make the show's antagonists (ie, the Wraith, Replicators, Michael... hell, even the Ori...) completely pointless, when the Atlantis base could just have the shield up at all times, be able to run all areas of the city at full capacity... hell, if it wasn't for the Arcturus solar system being destroyed, they likely could have reverse-engineered the anti-ship weapon and placed copies of it at points around Atlantis, each with their own power source (not to mention having the chair and drones powered at all times).
      It would take all the threat out of the series.

    • @sstimulants
      @sstimulants 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Why must it? The Dakara 'Weapon' platform was simply an Ancient device used to lay the seeds of life on a single world. Its range was limited to about high orbit (And was only able to strike throughout the galaxy through the stargate network), and all it did was emit a simple field that did some specified job on a molecular level. Whiles no doubt impressive, the Ancients have been known to manipulate things on a molecular level with ease and without a need for exceptional amounts of power, and the Darkara platform was essenitally just an upscaled version of that, actually with far less capabilities (It could not for example reshape things on a molecular level with accuracy, it was just programmed to emit a field that would always result in one effect). Earth at our current techngolgical level can emit certain fields around the Globe, its not an exceptional task.On the herhand Arcturus was a project of the Anciets created 60 + million years after the Dakara weapon platform, which was orginally used by the Ancients when they arrived in the Milky Way to seed life... The idea that the Ancients could not have created more powerful tools in that time is absurd.

    3:00 I seriously doubt that this tech would turn the war in the Ancients' favor. As Todd described in a later season, the Ancients were overconfident in their strategic thinking. They would advance too far on a battlefield and allow the Wraith to capture one or more of their ZPMs, which was then used to power the Wraith troop cloning facilities. The Wraith surged their numbers and overwhelmed any advantage the Ancients thought they won through Wraith battle deaths. And that's considering that each ZPM is an enormous but still finite power source. If the Ancients did perfect the Arcturus tech, a truly infinite power source, they might deploy a smaller version of it on all their ships. If the Wraith managed to capture and keep at least one working Arcturus power plant, then it's game over, the Wraith have won.
    As Rodney once said, the Achilles heel of Wraith technology is inefficient power generation. It's why their ships have such limited hyperdrive speed and range. With an Arcturus device, the Wraith clone all the troops and grow all the organic hive ships that they want, wipe out the Ancients, the Vanir, and every other threat to their dominance over Pegasus, then they turn the cloning facilities around to mass production of humans for food. If the Wraith can also reverse engineer the tech to some degree, their ships can also be fitted with mini Arcturus devices to cross intergalactic distances and set up Wraith colonies in all the nearest galaxies, bringing human cloning facilities with them. They'd become a plague upon the whole universe in time.
    One day, they find preexisting humans while exploring the Milky Way. Another day, maybe thousands of years later, in another galaxy close to ours, the Wraith stumble upon a string of gates left behind by Destiny's seed ships. No preexisting humans in that galaxy, but there are gates here. Most curious...

    Thing that annoyed me about Atlantis is. Atlantis computers should of had an explanation how to make zpms and drones and a facility on Atlantis to make them. What annoyed me in Atlantis (and rest of the Stargate series) is how so many times they would come in contact with some sort of technology that they could reverse engineer. For example, puddle jumper's cloaking field. You'd say they could figure out how to build that cloak and implement it in situations they needed it in. Instead they would have to rely on jumper's cloaking generator to cloak entire city.
      Or Goa'uld energy weapons. Even after obtaining multiple staff weapons or those small ships with staff cannons. They never built their own energy weapons. Not even for Prometheus. Instead they used pathetic rail guns that never did any significant damage.

      There is still soo much hidden tech in Atlantis. Heck when the time dilated Lanteans came back you find out there are parts of the system that even though we had the gene to activate were still not available to use. Somewhere in the whole city ship there's probably a sealed off area that could make both the Drones and the RPM devices. Though with the nature of what a RPM is that might have been better to make them off site on another gate accessible planet.

      Its been a while since I've watched the episode where they first contact the Pegasus replicators, but if I remember correctly, McKay actually asks them whether they have ZPMs and whether they had produced them themselves. So Rodney was definitely interested and did ask, and I think if the Atlantis team had remained on friendly terms with the replicators for more than 15 minutes, Rodneys question was supposed to show that they definitely would have discussed it in detail at a later point.
      But there wasnt enough time before they turned hostile and you dont just ask an alien species for detailed information about devices with military applications 10 minutes after you met them. So I think the writers anticipated your critique and addressed it in a realistic manner.

    • @jinneasbushindo7554
      @jinneasbushindo7554 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that this is actually shows that the Ancients had been cut off from the ONLY pocket universe lab where ZPMs were created and this project was reverse engineering/rediscovering accessing Zero point energy all over again from scratch without proper records). It's been more than 5-10 million years since the original pocket universe manufacturing facility was made, so there hasn't been a need to keep records of how to do it in that much time. There wasn't a need to mass manufacture given they last so long and since the Ancients' populations never grew exponentially (actually should've numbered in the trillions if they grew at human reproduction rates). During the war with the Wraith, they probably just pulled out all existing ZPMs as they evacuated and dropped them into other ships or stations rather than make new ones. Project Arcturas was possibly done purposefully once the war was in fully swing and they were losing and they didn't want someone to get to the ZPM manufacturing production lab located in pocket universe (i.e. the Replicators who could read minds). It's even possible the ZPM lab entrance or access WAS located in the Arcturas lab and that's why the Ancients couldn't access nor make new ZPMs because the canon stayed active, along with the exotic radiaation in the facility stayed high for years. They couldn't destroy the canon because there would be no other way to relieve the power otherwise and they knew the Wraith would get blown should they attempt to get to the facility.
      OR it's possible the Asuran replicators who couldn't harm the Ancients directly possibly cut off the Ancient access to the pocket dimension so that they'd lose and be eradicated, leaving only the Asuran replicator humanoids and the Wraith (whom they had a plan to eliminate). Project Arcturas was trying to rediscover how to access zero point from scratch since it's also possible that the Asurans deleted all references on HOW to create ZPMs safely as well as how to create or access pocket dimensions. The instability & radiaation of Arcturas is precisely why Rodney said such a device should've been created in a pocket universe and it's energy output tapped via a micro wormhole (cough exactly what a ZPM does). All ZPMs could contain singularities that tap back into the same pocket universe Arcturas power facility and divides up the power to prevent overload in the facility. If all ZPMs communicate with eachother, they could also control the facility remotely to dial up output to 100%. The OTHER method to prevent overload could've been to dial the Destiny (considering dialing it blew an entire Icarus planet in the process, Arcturas clearly has that level output). The crazy part is that had Rodney not destroyed the facility, the Asuran Replicators could've survived the radiaation and used it correctly since they could control flow at super human thinking speeds in realtime.

Leave the atero device on, regardless of star-gates, pick the wraith of one by one, destroy planets of required, use bio weapons to infect the wraith to extinct them. But they wouldn’t. The ancients could win every battle, what does that tell you about their tactics? They had never been pited against anyone more advanced than them, what does that tell you? The reason they abandoned pegasus was because of morality. It's very simple. The wraith were not some sort of relentless enemy hell bent on wiping the ancients out. They were a SPECIES, one that feeds to SURVIVE. They weren't evil. It just so happens that their food is humanoids and other animals. The ancients held life as special. They were, at their core stumped on what to do about the wraith. If they wiped them out it would go against everything they were and stood for as a species themselves. (Much like what they did when they left their home galaxy) They went as far as they were willing to and left the rest to unfold whatever way it would naturally.

      Then later on the data was stolen/ borrowed by a scientist on earth where he used it to power a cooling system inside a building, in a desert, surrounded by a force field and he used the extra energy to power the force field, so they couldn't turn it off, because it just kept generating more and the cooling system kept dropping the temperature inside the field... so they opened a second bridge and the system shut down, because it wasn't designed to handle the power of two bridges at the same time

    The notion that he can finish the work the Ancients started is ludicrous he should not even be able to understand the science behind this much less. Heck the science of humanity is nowhere close enough to be able to understand any of the Lantean advance technology let along their most cutting edge research like this weapon. Maccays arrogance resulted in the destruction of an entire solar system and still be is arrogant enough to think he is smart enough to finish this work.
    Notions like this is one of those big annoying plot holes that is ever present throughout the show first Carter, then Maccay, and whatever that other arrogant scientist name is in Stagnate Universe.
    Though I suppose some people wouldn't like the show if humans were getting their hands on Alteran/Lantean technology and not even having the slightest idea of how they work (and in some cases what they even do) because these technologies are literally tens of millions of years beyond primitive human knowledge/science and understanding.

      Arcturus Light it was actually stated as 3\4 in the episode, more than once.

      I watched the thing years ago, but almost certain that when Weir was arguing with McKay back at the tower, he corrected her with "its more like 5/6". I laughed myself out of chair. Need to find this part on video (or i'm just dumb). After that others certainly reffered to that as 3/4

      Arcturus Light they tried to say he destroyed the entire solar system, he countered with just 3/4.

      Yes, you are right! But. Didn't you find the moment with 5/6 funny? I found it (~2mins before the end of episode, watch yourself). And also found it in the script www.springfieldspringfield.co.uk/view_episode_scripts.php?tv-show=stargate-atlantis&episode=s02e06

    McKay's first attempt blows up a solar system.
    Can you imagine how much he'd blow up with a second failure?

      Well his second attempt at a modified version of arcturus resulted in almost destroying an entire universe.
