I can sum up why toxic relationships in media are popular with one of two phrases “its not like I like you or anything b-Baka” or “he’s only mean to you because he likes you” taught to everyone for generations and its a horrifically bad influence on them
What worst is that some people try to do this in real life. My friend kept being bother by this boy for no reason. When she finally ask him why he was being mean to her, it turns out the boy had crush on her. She had none of this and immediately told him that shouldn't do that.
Does anyone remember Twilight Mums (Moms for U.S people☺)40-50 year old women wearing their team Edward or Team Jakob T shirts? Yeah that wasn't cringy at all
One of my friends had a mom like that! I remember in high school when the last movie in the series came out, and the theaters showed all the rest leading up to it. Her mom went with us, and screamed, cried, laughed, and wet herself more than we did.
Least with Beauty and the Beast, the original anyway, you see the cracks in the facade and it isn't an "instant attraction" like it was in the other cases. I say the original because it's less abrupt when the dynamic changes between them than the remake. In the other three cases you cited, it was basically an instant connection to a toxic individual, no hesitation or anything, but at the very least enough time passed for Belle to actually get to know Beast on a personal level and the romance _built up_ instead of a switch flipping. And for the record this sort of thing is why I've basically always _despised_ Harley Quinn as I can admit at this point. Yes, more recent takes in the comics have tried to turn her into a posterchild for domestic abuse, but at the end of the day she's too far gone in the majority of cases. She's a perfect example of Stockholm Syndrome taken to the extreme.
Toxic relationships (whether it's a friendship, significant other, etc.) are no joke. One of the many reasons why I always keep my guard up (to a certain degree) with anyone I end up associating with.
Finally a new Alteori video I can watch without getting GvK spoiled. Seriously though I can already tell that this video is gonna be gold. I always thought that all these teen girl books and movies were so creepy.
I like the part in HISHE's take on Twilight where he waits too long and she turns into a vampire and immediately she's like "WHOOOOOoooh! Let's go eat some PEOPLE!" Like maybe she was the psychopath all along.
10:08 "a monster that keeps you against your will and refused to let you go" but The Beast DID let Belle go and it was Belle's choice to stay in the castle to take her father's place, she actually did escape but was attacked by wolves and saved by the Beast and she decided to help the Beast get back to the castle and heal his wounds instead of running away leaving him on snowy wolf fill forest and they didn't get along until after the Beast stop acting like a jerk
But she now had control over the library, she can add or subtract the books she wants. Also when he found out that her father was sick, he let her go in the Disney version was about him getting better and growing as a person.
That's actually a false equivalency, choosing to be a prisoner is not the same thing as having bodily autonomy. If a murderer gave you the choice to have your throat slit or your father's, does that mean they're no longer a murderer because you "chose" the outcome?
Ok I disagree with Belle and Beast though. Belle didn't fall in love with beast BECAUSE she was his prisoner. Beast changed , and their relationship wasn't toxic since they enhanced and appreciated the best pieces of eachother.
I remember having this conversation with my sister. I feel like a lot of girls that are still young genuinely find this attractive for some reason, but I really hope most grow out of it because toxic relationships aren't sexy at all.
I could have gone the rest of my life without remembering twilight ever existed, now the memories of my sisters constantly forcing me to watch it with them are coming back.
It's probably because when something is messed up or broken it makes it even more entertaining watching someone, probably the main character, try to fix it or at least deal with it in any way possible.

This is almost the same kind of situation with guys in various forms of media. The girls in these shows/games/manga can be as toxic as they want to their love interest and would rarely be called out by their significant other. Heck, they could even put them through an experience similar to the holocaust, and they'd still spend a majority of their time trying to prove their love for them. Case in point: the relationship between Keiichi and Naru from Love Hina. Naru abused, beats up, and demeans Keiichi for the slightest of unintentional incidents, and he still does everything he can to show how much he cares for her. This is a problem on both sides of the spectrum.
The movies were similar because 50 shades is literally based on Twilight. it started off as fanfiction and the author changed the names so they could sell the book without getting sued. So yeah. The blank slate character, the powerful hot guy that operates outside of the law... it's the same because it IS the same.
How do people even see toxic relationships as romantic? I immediately turned off a movie or show if they portrayed a toxic relationship as "romantic" because it made me uncomfortable. Unless it's for dark humour or comedy, I don't enjoyed these kind of relationships. I'm surprised that many people does, well.. What do I know anyway?
Edward "I've killed people before". Bella "It does not matter". Bella "You've _killed_ people, Jake!". Jacob "We're not killing anyone, Bella'...'The only thing we do kill...vampires". 👁👁

Let us not forget about the social experiment done on tinder. You had two profiles. A short, ugly, bald man who made pretty good money and came off as a nice person. And the other profile was a hired actor who was tall, handsome, and came off as a bad boy, in this profiles he states that he’s broke... who do ya think got the most matches? Also, when this actor interacted with women he would do and say such demeaning things and women would eat it all up. Where as the other man would be kind and people would ghost him on whatever little matches he had. Then the experiment goes weird... the handsome man starts telling women that he’s a felon and women still keep on trying to persuade him. He then moves on to specifics. He makes up stories about being abusive or being a pedo, and some women even said “everyone makes mistakes.” I have even seen similar things first hand. Women love projects and fixer uppers it seems. If their hypergamy doesn’t kick in to want to be with a rich dude, they go for very questionable men... That’s why when bella says “i don’t care” about the fact that he had killed people, a desperate woman who doesn’t get the attention from a highly attractive man, would throw all the extras aside and want to sleep with him... That’s just how we’re wired.
I remember having a huge crush on David Bowie in Labyrinth when I was in high school, and I do realize as an adult how not very appropriate that was (I wrote some real bad fan fiction lmao), but at least in that movie, Sarah rejects him and stays her own person.
Ironic, considering most of these stories/films are from women, so you're saying women want to be inequal? I think it's more just hormones overpowering actual love and these stories never being properly filtered, plus the writers never acknowledge the criticism they get.

@@michaelfireheart8300 "so you're saying women want to be inequal? I think it's more just hormones overpowering actual love and these stories never being properly filtered" no it's got more to do with the writers upbringing, if they grew up around toxic relationships that's how their mind is gonna be programmed to view abusive behavior as normal it's something called "repetition compulsion", the human mind seeks what's familiar and wants to repeat familiar patterns the reason the writers don't acknowledge the criticism is because they haven't unpacked their upbringing to see that what kind of things their mind was programmed with were unhealthy behaviors
This has gone on long before Harley Quinn or Twilight. Do I need to remind you of Buffy's "romance" with Angel -and in particular her statement that when he kisses her, she wants to die? Truly, a relationship meant to last.

10:20 I disagree with this point. Belle made a deal with the Beast but once she was in his castle resisted him at almost every turn, so you can't claim Stockholm Syndrome here. As to her character, she had clear ideas of right and wrong and loved knowledge and was very curious, which is why she ultimately sided with the Beast against the incurious and assuming townsfolk. At least in the cartoon version. Not sure about the original, and certainly not in the ridiculous live action remake, which implied most women at this time couldnt/shouldn't read despite the fact that the original story was printed in and popularized by a publication aimed at teenage girls and young women.
The issue here is that her "choice" was made under duress due to the fact that if she didn't sacrifice her own freedom, then her father would face imprisonment. It would be like saying you chose to commit suicide because when given the choice between whether a loved one would be murdered or yourself, you chose to take their place. Not to mention that Stockholm Syndrome doesn't require you to be compliant throughout the stage it takes for it to set in, it's merely becoming attached to the person who took your freedom away.
@@insertname3977 I don't understand why the choice being made under duress would invalidate it as a choice. Self-sacrifice is still a choice, and a very brave one at that, one that takes a lot more spine than numerous other doormat heroines display. I didn't think Stockholm Syndrome had anything to do with attraction, just with developing sympathy to the goals of the captor. Which, on second thought, would seem to line up if the beast had continued to act as a captor. He lets her go, the original goals are abandoned, and as an audience we get the chance to see his change is genuine rather than some coercive tactic. I think her change in attitude, rather than her mind warping itself as the result of trauma, was instead caused by her acknowledgement that the Beast really was trying to be a better person. EDIT: I misread "attached" as "attracted". Whoops. The second part of that paragraph still stands.
@@flibbernodgets7018 Because a choice made under duress cannot legally be considered, as "their choice" especially when not choosing to allow herself to be imprisoned would mean the harm of someone else, in this scenario the choice comes down to the Beast choosing to imprison Belle regardless of what she said. Also that second paragraph still falls under Stockholm as people experiencing it have been reported to going to visit their captors even after being freed whether by the captors choice or being forced to do let their captives go, because "they've probably changed as a person". Also the goal of Beast choosing to accept to imprison Belle was for her to break the curse, even in the Disney version.
I remember watching Twilight as a kid and feeling so out of place with my friends cause I was the only one that saw Edward as creepy not romantic in the slightest and Jacob was as just as bad and wondering why Bella would even want to be in a relationship with these guys
The difference between Twilight/50 shades of grey and Joker and Harley is that the story doesn't try to hide that it's an enormously abusive and toxic relationship. Every Batman fan knows that there's nobody worse for Harley than Joker. That's what makes the new Harley Quinn TV show pretty good. She liberates herself from him and forms her own team. Same with the Birds of Prey movie.
To be fair, Belle and the beast is a little more different from the other examples because the subtext, I think, is about taming the beast and literally "making a man out of the beast" which figuratively means changing "your man" into something you like. Gaston is the antagonist there because while you can argue that it's also a "beast", he cannot be tamed and he will never change for Belle, therefore he is a bad partner.
Also Gaston is the type of dude who never takes no for answer. Beast gave her the chance to leave to save her dad even when it risked him being stuck as a monster for the rest of his life.
This is why Beauty and the Beast, Twilight, and Fifty Shades of grey are not only creepy, they’re dangerous because they are geared towards the most vulnerable and easily impressionable girls in the world as their demographic.
Issue is that Beauty and the Beast is actually a good movie and the protagonist has an actual personality and the beast changes over time and there was a scene in the movie where she talked backed to him
Beauty and the Beast isn't creepy or dangerous. It isn't Stockholm Syndrome like people have made it out to me 🤦♀️ Even in the original story, there's no Stockholm Syndrome involved. Belle has more freedom than Bella and what's-her-face in 50 Shades. 🙄
You forgot the "stalk the girl until you get the girl" trope. It's so cute to follow her around and watch her every move and eventually she'll give in because you are the nice guy... *barf*
To be fair about Disney's Beauty and the Beast, Belle willing gave herself up to save her father, and she only falls for the Beast when he starts to really change and becomes a nicer person. I would recommend watching Lindsay Ellis's video on it. 😎
Belle didn't willingly give herself up, she made a choice under duress to save her father. It's the same as if you chose to have your throat slit rather than a loved one, it's still someone taking away your bodily autonomy even if you have the "choice".
Yep it is actually something Lima Syndrome where the captor starts to bond for their captive not the other way around. A good example is Yondu from Guardians of the Galaxy who kept Peter to raise him as his son because he was a better dad than Ego would be.
@@insertname3977 I understand that. I was just mainly saying that in response to the supposed criticism that the beast kidnapped Belle or she tries to fix him or something. This movie I think manages the believability of the romance well.
honest question: do you think the shows caused the the attraction to abusive/unhealthy relationships or was the shows a product of an already existing attraction to abuse? i can never wrap my own head around how anyone can be attracted to abusive/evil people. is it the excitement/uncertainty ? the dominance ? self hatred ? i honestly want to know xD

One relationship that got me was Padme and Anakin in Attack of the Clones. Anakin straight up admitted to being a mass murder when he slaughtered a tribe of Tusken raiders and Padme seemed to be ok with that.
Now, truth be told that also could have been due to the fact it was about Tusken Raiders, a species that is only known for its violent attacks on seemingly innocent people.
@@SergeantPsycho Honestly if I'm remembering lore correctly Tusken Raiders weren't even considered as people by the Galaxy as a whole, just a bunch of low tech "apes", like how Chimpanzees aren't treated on the same level even though they're advance enough to now be using stone tools.
Because Padme realized he was still human. Also they were Tusken Raiders so it is kinda like admitting to the mass murder of Concentration camp guards. No one is going to really miss them.
Im working on a book that is a parody of twilight the vampire does similar things but when he finally has her completely wrapped around his finger he drains her of all her blood then throws her aside with the end hinting at him doing this quite often
When it comes to romance, a lot of people get swept away by the passion of the story that the toxic undertones fly under the radar At best, romance stories are mediocre with a few exceptions just a handful of cute flirting between two characters, but often times writers try too hard to create drama while also trying to make the love between the two characters so deep and characters end up doing very shady shit that will put a wedge between the characters but quickly gets swept under the rug because of how in love they are
There's literally nothing realistic about these movies...EXCEPT for the boring/dead-inside females! "Diamonds are a girl's best friend!" and non-caring men...what a combo! It is a "Tale as old as time...", Alteori! Glad that you had that thought at the end!!
The Harley Quinn love thing is, she didn't forget her training, according to all the lore for her character, she gets off on psychopaths and super villains. She went into Archam knowing what she was after and got placed with the Joker. She's sort of loosely based off the Manson Girls or the people who are attracted to people like the Joker, Ivy or Knight Wing. Also, most Jokers are in the killing joke arc, where SHE talked him into doing 1 last mission that got his family killed and got him turned into the Joker and he's paying her back for it. But yeah, Harley gets off on that he IS the joker, she's not trying to save/help him, she's just trying to jump his bones.
The original origin had her be an intern who was in way over her head. It is mentioned at the end that Joker tried to elicit pity by creating a fake backstory to make him sympathetic but according to Batman she is the first to take one at face value.
I'm so happy ya made this video, I've thought about this so much, especially with the whole Joker and Harley Quinn trend after Suicide Squad. Some sad shit to see
Also remember when Enchantress showed Harley the vision of her greatest desire which was having a family with a tamed Joker, a romanticized fantasy of fixing the bad boy.
It honestly is sad to see women flock to see movies and TV shows about guys that would use them and lose them. Instead of focusing on the guy that may not look like a Hollywood actor but is able to be all the things that help complete both men and women.
Oddly enough, makes me sorta feel better about being alone, like it's preferable to live by yourself instead of with someone who's, so mental they'd use you as a stand in for goals or a personality.
I really really hate Loki. Bo-ho you daddy didn't give you enough love as a child. Vanko's father died because he was forced into poverty but Howard Hughes I mean Stark.
In my experience, people (especially women), often want the idea of a thing. Not the thing itself. Mostly because in their head, they idealize or romanticize the shit out of it.
Most mainstream YA movies are based off of books. The writers of those books are not interested in writing a complex love story w/ complex, flawed characters, they are interested in writing a fluff piece fantasy starring Tropes. I doubt most of the writers have even casually studied the art of storytelling.
Did myself a service and avoided the Twilight bullshit all together. The way they did Vampires? Yeah, wasn't a fan. Blade and Selena would've had a field day with those sparkling bastards.
Plus, I never cared enough about Twilight to even feel angry at it, for the most part. That was in-part because, if I wanted a good vampire story that blends gothic horror, romance, etc. in both novel and movie format, I was already satisfied with Bram Stoker’s Dracula. For me, the Dracula novel and the Francis Ford Coppola’s film adaptation delivered more on what I would expect from Twilight’s premise. Admittedly, the book’s romance is more between Mina and Johnathan Harker, while the movie puts more focus on Mina and Dracula, which I think could have been pulled off without sacrificing the former. But I digress, and when I put both Stoker’s and Coppola’s versions together, I get a collective experience that would render Twilight obsolete anyway.
The bigger picture is often challenging to grasp and let's be honest ,people want easy ,not hard or challenging. Low risk ,high reward is a fragile idea born from laziness.
Part of the reason why I can't get a girlfriend is the fact the most women purposely pick the guys who'll disregard them as human beings and only see women as something to play with. Nice guys like myself who wants a genuine relationship can't get that because the fact that we're nice. I'll admit that yes, sex is sometimes on my mind, but I know very well that sex can also ruin a relationship which is why I wouldn't want it as much. I just want someone to be with, someone to laugh with, to make memories with, but that's just something I'll never have because I'm nice and women don't want nice guys who'll treat them right.
Just remember, if 50 Shades was based in a trailer park and the guy wasn't hot, it'd be an episode of Criminal Minds or CSI.

I like the part in HISHE's take on Twilight where he waits too long and she turns into a vampire and immediately she's like "WHOOOOOoooh! Let's go eat some PEOPLE!" Like maybe she was the psychopath all along.
toxic relations never end well.
50 shades would end like the new The invisible man.
Ok but what did Beast give her???

That's actually a false equivalency, choosing to be a prisoner is not the same thing as having bodily autonomy. If a murderer gave you the choice to have your throat slit or your father's, does that mean they're no longer a murderer because you "chose" the outcome?
Ok I disagree with Belle and Beast though. Belle didn't fall in love with beast BECAUSE she was his prisoner. Beast changed , and their relationship wasn't toxic since they enhanced and appreciated the best pieces of eachother.
Buffy and Angel were the true human and Vampire romance, and a man wrote that originally

I would give Underworld some credit too even if Micheal and Selene were not 100% Human or Vampire by the end of the second film.

I could have gone the rest of my life without remembering twilight ever existed, now the memories of my sisters constantly forcing me to watch it with them are coming back.
Thank god i only have brothers
It's probably because when something is messed up or broken it makes it even more entertaining watching someone, probably the main character, try to fix it or at least deal with it in any way possible.
Bella gained eternal youth, a half demon baby, and rich just by selling her soul.
That mad the movies even weirder.

The animation on your avatar at 4:16 is perfection. Very insightful breakdown of the dynamics in these relationships.
"Going twinkle twinkle is how you get the girls to drop them panties."
Best line ever. 😂
“If his heart isn’t beating, then how does he get blood down to his … dish soap?” Made me laugh good. She is just great at this.
This is proof that if you are good looking enough as a guy, you will be viewed in a positive light regardless of your actions or morals
Literally every relationship in Bojack Horseman
Except peanut butter and Diane

Alteori has entered relationship guru mode
He makes up stories about being abusive or being a pedo, and some women even said “everyone makes mistakes.”
I have even seen similar things first hand.

Fantasies are very weird like that, but a fair point you are making
I remember having a huge crush on David Bowie in Labyrinth when I was in high school, and I do realize as an adult how not very appropriate that was (I wrote some real bad fan fiction lmao), but at least in that movie, Sarah rejects him and stays her own person.

Ironic, considering most of these stories/films are from women, so you're saying women want to be inequal? I think it's more just hormones overpowering actual love and these stories never being properly filtered, plus the writers never acknowledge the criticism they get.

@@michaelfireheart8300 "so you're saying women want to be inequal? I think it's more just hormones overpowering actual love and these stories never being properly filtered"
no it's got more to do with the writers upbringing, if they grew up around toxic relationships that's how their mind is gonna be programmed to view abusive behavior as normal
it's something called "repetition compulsion", the human mind seeks what's familiar and wants to repeat familiar patterns
the reason the writers don't acknowledge the criticism is because they haven't unpacked their upbringing to see that what kind of things their mind was programmed with were unhealthy behaviors
This has gone on long before Harley Quinn or Twilight.
Do I need to remind you of Buffy's "romance" with Angel -and in particular her statement that when he kisses her, she wants to die? Truly, a relationship meant to last.

The Twilight Books are 50 Shades fanfiction made for teens. Also if I as a guy had to choose between a Vampire and a Werewolf; I'd choose the Pack Creatures, less likely to be abusive.
Actually 50 shades of grey did start as twilight fan fiction. That why the characters are basically Bella and Edward but human and adults.
@@sandywolfr26 Uhm no? I think Twilight came after? I don't fricking care both are terrible movies that are really only made for stupid malleable Tweens and Teens. Just my opinion. Cute pfp btw.
THANK YOU! Someone finally talking about this prolific problem.
I remember watching Twilight as a kid and feeling so out of place with my friends cause I was the only one that saw Edward as creepy not romantic in the slightest and Jacob was as just as bad and wondering why Bella would even want to be in a relationship with these guys
Twilight, 50 Shades... these should be WARNINGS, not romantic!
That’s why modern men and women believe that pain is love 🤷🏾♂️
Mass Effect Xenophilia.........
Ya Right.
Good shout.
@Eric Khai I actually have read the original fairytale, but I do like the disney version too.

@@insertname3977 Possibly, but Anakin did express guilt over that. On the flip side if Padme was ok with that, then shame on her. :/

And that sounds better than anything Stephanie myer ever write
When it comes to romance, a lot of people get swept away by the passion of the story that the toxic undertones fly under the radar
At best, romance stories are mediocre with a few exceptions just a handful of cute flirting between two characters, but often times writers try too hard to create drama while also trying to make the love between the two characters so deep and characters end up doing very shady shit that will put a wedge between the characters but quickly gets swept under the rug because of how in love they are
There's literally nothing realistic about these movies...EXCEPT for the boring/dead-inside females!
Some sad shit to see
i haven't been watching for a while, did you become more comfortable with your natural voice or is it just me?
Also remember when Enchantress showed Harley the vision of her greatest desire which was having a family with a tamed Joker, a romanticized fantasy of fixing the bad boy.
Crazy thing to me is some of the women who like these stories are the same one that scream about toxic masculinity. WHAT DO WANT FROM ME WOMAN????🤣🤣
Basically the same reason why women fell in love with Loki.

Altiori you are always right!
It actually makes sense. Since 50 shaded started out as Twilight fan fiction so Christian and Edward are really the same person
*Alteori fawning over Godizilla is a better love story than Twilight*
The bigger picture is often challenging to grasp and let's be honest ,people want easy ,not hard or challenging.
Low risk ,high reward is a fragile idea born from laziness.
Found your channel today, now I'm hooked.
