I like the Peavey Invective better than the more trebly, thinner 5150 sound. I used an original 5150 half stack for about 12 years... good lead channel, worst clean channel EVER. The Invective has a more balanced, better sound, with great modern features that are exactly what we need now. Sounds killer, great job Peavey!
The Invective 120 is by far, hands down, the best amplifier I have ever owned. Possibly even the best amp that I have ever played, period. That is saying a lot as I have owned plenty of amps over the years due to the fact that my tastes are always changing and my interests tone-wise are all over the place. I think that researching, buying, selling, and trading gear is a constant process I am going through that I love just as much as actually playing guitar. I also love working on and modifying gear, whether it's guitars, amps, pedals, ANY of it. Electric guitar is just a part of my heart and soul and I love anything and everything that has anything to do with it. But THIS amplifier is the last one I have purchased or traded for in a long time when you consider how long an amp USUALLY stays in the music room. At this point the Invective has become THE amp, and I know that I will not sell it. I bought it brand new, along with the matching Invective 2x12 cab (the Invective is an amp that truly does sound its best when paired with its matching cab, whether its the 2x12 or 4x12, they just sound best through an Invective cab. In this case, it's not just some gimmick, it's an actual thing) and it has been worth EVERY penny that I spent and has never fallen short in any way EVER. I play guitar every single day, for at least a half an hour, most times alot more, and when I play I play CRANKED, even if I'm just practicing for a few mins. The Invective does EVERYTHING, and dialing in the sound you want is not difficult and does not take long, so you don't ever spend more time trying to find your sound than you do actually playing.
I’ve had my Invective 120 or almost two years now, I’m very happy with the amplifier I feel like you get a lot for the money I’ve gigged with it and it allows me to cover anything from classic rock, funk, blues to metal love the amplifier! I highly recommend it my best musical investment it also feels very durable well built. Great video on it man🤘
I love the features on this amp. I have an older model -- the XXX, which has several features that are missing on their 6505 : master volume, 3 channels all with separate EQ, FX loop with send/return levels, tubes can be swapped out (e.g. replaced with EL34s).
@@brian1749 i Like the Black Spirit Floor better for metal and live situations in general It's lighter, smaller, sounds great and have everything you need right at your feet.
I actually almost bought one the other day... I was in a band with a guy who had one, but to my memory it was a pretty tame amp. It's been a long time though...
But as a first tube amp for someone (me lol) to buy, do you agree that its an amazing option? I even got an amazing discount so its even more bang for the buck. I dindt find any other amps in this price range or even bellow, that are so great sounding and versatile at the same time. Especialy the effects, yeah I realy dont regret it, but wont be the only amp in my life anyway...
Those features should be standard on all amps these days. This is why modellers are gaining such a foot hold in the industry right now. The name of the game is versatility, and Misha knows that. He's and Axe FX dude. He designed a modern Peavey 5150 with everything you need for what ever gig you want. Throw a couple strymon pedals in the fx loop, connect the midi, and make a few presets..... Boom! You have a mostly tube signal path modeller. It's insane, and Misha hit it on the head. Hell, chuck an HX Stomp in the fx loop and use all 8 blocks for some crazy fx chains.. the sky is the limit with that set up.. as for the tones you dialed in for the mix, the invective was a bit warmer sounding then I like. The 5150 was a bit shrill. But they sounded good in the mix so fuck it.. great work dude. Always a joy to watch your videos.
This amp rules thanks for the low tune demo I like to play g and lower and this sounds like it won’t mud up at all. Super nice clean and crunch also really sounds like something down my alley. The added features of gate and boost are huge!

Yeah, it is hard to do. I mean most people are listening on their phone speakers, so there's really no way that is ever going to replicate the sound of a 4 x 12 😂
For me? Overkill. Certainly for some this thing is precisely the solution they've wanted though. Secondarily, I did a shootout at a buddies house vs a block letter and just like in your video I liked the 5150 better. Great demo Taylor. Thanks!
how is it? also i recognize you from that comment section of that youtube short demo of the invective mh on top of a 1x12 with a v30 under a desk. i'm waiting to pick mine up from guitar center soon
The Hughes and Kettner Grandmeister deluxe 40 does the same thing, and it has auto biasing technology within the amplifier itself so you don’t have to worry about taking the amp to be biased all the time.
Pros: Glad they overhauled the clean channel and added midi. Individual pre/post gain controls for crunch/lead are a nice addition. Excited it can use EL34's without being modded. The settings were dialed different between the amps, the 5150 certainly sounded brighter but I'm sure the Invective could have been dialed in to match. Both sound very convincing of the Peavey tone. If that's the metal you're after, these amps nail it naturally. Invective does sound really good and the features are certainly not overkill, all very useful
Yeah, I could have tried to match them, but I think the mid range fatness of the invective is what makes it different, so I wanted to dial in something to emphasize that without going overboard with it. I don't think you could dial the 5150 to match the invective on the other hand...
Well some of these features are like on the hughes&kettner grandmeisters. Except those even have built in delay and modulation. And also the tone, if I had the money to buy a new amp, i wouldnt go with the h&k again, i just cant get it to my liking. But maybe thats just bc my lack of experience, skill or maybe guitar pickups or pedals, i have no clue... Edit: But I still think this design is the future for tube amps.
so, if I plug a couple Midi capable pedals in the loop and use their MIDI functions with the amp, would the footswitch be able to control those too? I could just see the rig being so all in one if I plugged in a Source Audio Collider (delay+reverb), and some sort of modulation pedal, and just set them on the amp, powered with those ports on the back. That would be sick.
I got a Peavey Valve King 100 Watt head. Made in China. Got it cheap. It gets very hot for some reason....Anyway, I have it going through an old Marshall cabinet. That combination is amazing!....It hasn't died on me yet. The trick is to "jumper cable" the FX loop on the front panel. If you come across one, give it whirl. You may be surprised.
@@TaylorDanley it took about 3 minutes to dial in the tone, unlike the dual rec that we really never found the right tone with, but it was a roadster combo which might have something to do with it sounding......not good Idk. love the Invective though and I wish I had the extra cash to get one also!!!
Not my "cup'o tea" but seems like a great amp for modern metal man. I liked your demo tho. Not all talking, you actually showed what this amp can do. Kudos!
The chugs sounded better on the 5150 but the actually individual note definition and dynamics was much better on the Invective. Meaning in the mix at the end the 5150 the squeals were getting loss in the noise of the distortion but on the invective you could hear them perfectly and they sounded dynamic and pierced through the mix. That is what I am hearing it through my monitors atleast.
Definitely an EQ thing or minor differences in component tolerances. No two amps of the same model will sound identical side by side due to these variations. Invective is a 5150 with some modern features added on but the amp circuitry is the same.
I need some community suggestion, I’m planning to buy the Invective but I don’t know what to get, the 120 or mh, I don’t need 120 watts of power but I like all the features that comes with it, and my ears favours 6L6 over EL84 but the mh is so affordable and all I need really is 20 watts, 50 the most, anything past that it would be just too loud.
I love my modellers and plugins for easy recording and can go a while without even touching my amps. I occasionally feel like selling them. Then I have a day on my own in the house, plug into one of my amps and remember why I own them :D
Weirdly, the invective has the sort of sound in the mix that you'd want in the room but should get lost a bit in the mix, but doesn't...if that makes sense. If that doesn't make sense then this wine must have gone straight to my ears.
Try the modeler through a power amp into a real cabinet, that’ll let you feel the amp in the room power with a versatility of any modeled head you can think of without volume constraints on the gain settings
I was fortunate to hang out with Misha a few summers ago when he came to Motor City Guitar for a clinic. I think honestly to get the full effect of this amp you need an invective cab. Also an interesting thing is Misha didn’t use the built in boost as he preferred to use the Precision Drive which I tried it and it gives more control. Also the blackout pickups have a fizzy tone to it. Time to try some Fishman moderns. Lol.
just received this amp today and before I get started and have a quick question I'm using two notes 8 ohm captor X I'm a bit confused on where to put the impedance switch do I leave it full power at 8 ohm shows or 1/2 power 8 ohm
All of the fast-note riffs on the lowest string sound muddy. You should have tried 6 string riffing too. Like the riff at 12:35 is super muddy...maybe because of the amp or because of the low A
Hey man, really cool video! Are you using IRs here and if so which ones? I don't see a mic in front of the cab that's why I'm asking. I dig the tone you got!
in the mix it sounded way better than the 5150, with an IR loader it would be even better specs. How did you record your amp sound? Great channel man \m/
See, I thought the exact opposite in this one. I thought the 5150 cut through much better and the Invective sounded a bit muffled or dampened. Still a great sounding amp. But compared to the 5150...The 5150 is probably in the top 3 of the finest sounding metal Amps of all time IMHO. This was such a good demo though. Great job Taylor!
Killer sound review dude, I hella want that amp! I feel like this is the only thing you've reviewed in a while that you managed not to make sound like a boss metal zone is being used lol You and those 81/85s. The duncan's sound really good with that amp.
Thanks! It's another one of those situations where I think each fits a certain part of the demo song better, but I really like both. This actually made me appreciate my 5150 more!
Plus the gate on mine is pretty much useless cause anything over 1 on the dial pretty much kills ALL the signal. And my gain channels are not like this. With your gain set to 9 o clock like you had it on the lead channel, I have to set mine to 1 o clock to get the same amount. I'm wondering if something is wrong with mine or if there is such a difference because that one is USA made and mine is Chinese made.
Yeah I've been wanting one for years now I've got a Peavey 6505 MH hooked to a 2 by 12 and then my pedalboard plus several different guitars with passive and active Angie's and Seymour Duncan's so I get good times but the invective is just like next level awesomeness I want one so bad even on a used Market if you can find one they're almost as expensive as a brand new one with shipping and everything they're like two grand new

In general i find my invective to be tighter but also less bright then my 6505. I think he needed to hit the presence a bit more on the invective to give it more life. Not sure if he had them set the same on both amps but the invective in general needs the settings up a bit more to help brighten it up. I prefer my invective to my 6505 generally.
Totally. I didn't dial them in exactly the same, but in general the invective has a fatter mid range. You can thin it out by cutting the post volume on whatever channel you're using, but why? I like the fat mid range!
I think you made this amp sound really good, curious it didnt seem like you had the master boost on? Also once you did compare it to the 5150, the invectives sounded a little muddy and muffled in the mix, but it didnt sound that way when you demo'd it by itself
I've been following your Channel for only about the last month and I like your content I love heavy metal and watching demos and learning new songs. But the title of the video insinuates that you don't like tube amps? So do you prefer solid state over tubes? Because man tube amps in my opinion and in most of the guitar community believe tube amps are superior to solid state now solid-state floor modelers like the helix, and all the new ones that just came out are impressive.
No I actually really like tube amps. The point being that I've long said the convenience of modelers is better than having tubes. But this amp has so many features built in, it makes it harder to make that argument... At the end of the day though, I'd still rather use my axefx/powerstage which weighs 5 or 6 lbs, vs carry around this beast.
@@TaylorDanley yea their are some greAt solidstate stuff out there . ive got the spark 40. Peavey 75 watt vyper , line 6 spider 2 and my 6505mh with my mesa 2×12 and pedelboard. But for real ive got a tone cloud tone saved on the spark 40 that's brutal and chugs like hell. But there is something special about tube amps just the sound they sound in the way they resonate
I haven't played an Engl Powerball in a long time, but to my memory they are very tight and do one style of tone very well, this covers significantly more ground, so I'd definitely go Peavey between the two.
I thought your arms were gonna pop out of its sockets when you lifted it I got scared haha.. Exciting videos as always, unfortunately I got a blackstar budget. 😎🤧
Hey man you make great riffs and these killer amps suit your style well. Invective is an amp that sounds very biting and mean. But the funny thing is many players still can't come up with mean sounding music with it. Hah! I was gonna get this but then I got into this cosmic black metal/astral black metal stuff and this thing is just whey too edgy and crispy. For it's use, I guess it just depends on the type of music. But when a person gets to a point where it doesn't matter what the amp is to make their metal, then they have truly come to their full realization. Some of the greatest metal and black metal albums were recorded on cheap solid state amps. It's all about how one dials it in. Mithras for example came up with their gems by using a mere sansamp! LOL
Ridiculous amount of gain. You got that sound with the gain on 1.5 out of 10? I vaguely remember playing this in a store and being blown away by how much gain there was.
@@TaylorDanley at 20 watts it does a good job of replicating what’s great about the 120. You loose a couple of features sure but for a bedroom player it’s awesome.
The Invective is awesome! I've loved it since I first saw it at NAMM a few years ago. I just don't think I can justify another 5150-esque amp, in my collection. I've already got a 6505+ and 5150 III Stealth.
5150 III Stealth is amazing. I saw fluff review it. I'd say its ok that you don't have the invective bc the stealth is so good. It's better bc of its size being smaller. But a very good amp. Your lucky to have one. Great clean channel on it too.
@@mrfender5001 I own a few amps and that 5150 Stealth is easily my favorite. I tend to write sorta thrash, and love beefy low-end, that so many people seem to want to cut from their tone these days. That amp delivers low end, with plenty to spare! I can't recommend it enough!
See I was loving it and then I read what you said about not loving Djenty stuff (I dont either)and I was like, but why mention that like that applies to the amp? lol Is he implying that bits really for djenters? Is it not great for us death/thrash/black metal guys? Grrr Sorry Im critical cos Im actually about to buy a rig. Ive been playing through a THR10X for 3 years and loving it but I need more. You may be surprised.
the other guitar player in my band just switched from his dual rec to this, and he has never been happier!!!
That's a good move! I love a dual rec, but this amp is SIGNIFICANTLY easier to get a great tone out of IMO
@@TaylorDanley it took about 3 minutes to dial in the tone, unlike the dual rec that we really never found the right tone with, but it was a roadster combo which might have something to do with it sounding......not good Idk. love the Invective though and I wish I had the extra cash to get one also!!!
very nice the comparison between the invective and 5150 !!!
Thanks! 🤘
I heard that American me riff
I sneak them in every now and again.
Flexibility wise?maybe HK Triamp MKIII? Tons of saveable features.
I think the 5150 wins here but maybe brighter settings on the Invective would help. I mean aren't they basically the same amp?
Dam I want this love the boost knob
I slightly prefered the brighter 5150 tone, but that could have been just an EQ thing. Very impressive amp.
Definitely an EQ thing or minor differences in component tolerances. No two amps of the same model will sound identical side by side due to these variations. Invective is a 5150 with some modern features added on but the amp circuitry is the same.
Love the amp! In the a/b, the OG won man. Theres just something that slaps with the block letter!
They just came out with a Peavey Invective 112 combo 20 watts for like $1200 comes with a V30 in it.
Good review! Thank you. The fractal joke doesn't land though; that PV footswitch is both way simpler and less well made than anything by Fractal.
I cant decide between invective or evh 5153 100 watt stealth.
10:45 Curious: is the sound we’re hearing here the cab sim?
Lol.
Are you using an oversized straight cab for this demo?
The clean Chanel is probably one of the best made and how it takes pedals... How were you micing and any post processing?
just received this amp today and before I get started and have a quick question I'm using two notes 8 ohm captor X I'm a bit confused on where to put the impedance switch do I leave it full power at 8 ohm shows or 1/2 power 8 ohm
I turn that gate off usually, I like it tho.
It's more of something when gate is off.
All of the fast-note riffs on the lowest string sound muddy. You should have tried 6 string riffing too. Like the riff at 12:35 is super muddy...maybe because of the amp or because of the low A
Damn that thing sounds massive. Don't even need to boost the damn thing with pedals. Wow.
You really don't! The built in boost covers it for you, and even then, you really don't need it unless you specifically want that sound.
Hey man, really cool video! Are you using IRs here and if so which ones? I don't see a mic in front of the cab that's why I'm asking. I dig the tone you got!
7:39 Lizzy Border - American Metal riff 🤟🤘
in the mix it sounded way better than the 5150, with an IR loader it would be even better specs.
Great job Taylor!
the face you're making in the meme for the video is hilarious...its like the 'no U diiiinnnt' face
I see you have Boss katana mk1 100W head in back(if I see clearly).. what can you say about it, I bought it recently?
Thanks, great review btw!
I DO! Video on that coming SOON. For now, I'll say it's very similar to the spider by Line 6, if the spider was made by BOSS and didn't suck.
Nice amp for sure. In terms of flexibilty all tube head the H&K Switchblade or Coreblade might be even "better" or more feature packed.
Hope some of that juicy crunch/grind/djent goodness makes its way into the hype series 😁
No blend of both? Maybe next time?
Killer sound review dude, I hella want that amp! I feel like this is the only thing you've reviewed in a while that you managed not to make sound like a boss metal zone is being used lol You and those 81/85s. The duncan's sound really good with that amp.
If we can just hold off long enough hopefully line 6 will just add it to helix. I have been wanting the invective mh
Hard to beat the OG. Great video!
Does this thing sound good at bedroom volume levels?
When amps like this develop a fault they are a nightmare to fix
What’s an example ?
It’s an incredible amp! And now i really want one! Curse you!!! 😂
😂 Same! It is a really cool amp. 🙌
Yeah I've been wanting one for years now I've got a Peavey 6505 MH hooked to a 2 by 12 and then my pedalboard plus several different guitars with passive and active Angie's and Seymour Duncan's so I get good times but the invective is just like next level awesomeness I want one so bad even on a used Market if you can find one they're almost as expensive as a brand new one with shipping and everything they're like two grand new
I thought the 5150 cut through much better and the Invective sounded a bit muffled or dampened. Still a great sounding amp. But compared to the 5150...The 5150 is probably in the top 3 of the finest sounding metal Amps of all time IMHO. This was such a good demo though. Great job Taylor
In general i find my invective to be tighter but also less bright then my 6505. I think he needed to hit the presence a bit more on the invective to give it more life. Not sure if he had them set the same on both amps but the invective in general needs the settings up a bit more to help brighten it up. I prefer my invective to my 6505 generally.
this amp is just a beast🤩
The OG 5150 sounds more open, detailed, with more high end sizzle, and all around slightly better to me. But, the Invective still sounds quite good.
I see master boost was on, I was looking at the switch upside down!
Do you still Own this Amp?
İ have invective mh and this is 7 string and low tuning amp.
OMG! massive sound 🔥
Sounds pretty good but just a little too loose and fizzy in the sustain
Nice review the amp sounds awesome dude. 😀🤘🤘
This or engl powerball ?
I haven't played an Engl Powerball in a long time, but to my memory they are very tight and do one style of tone very well, this covers significantly more ground, so I'd definitely go Peavey between the two.
Engl Powerball ALL DAY
Your hair is getting better and better 😆 No more awkward stage
I thought your arms were gonna pop out of its sockets when you lifted it I got scared haha.. Exciting videos as always, unfortunately I got a blackstar budget. 😎🤧
Although the Invective is an awesome amp with possibly a more modern tone, the 5150 sounds angry which is a beautiful thing.
Do I see rusty screws on that amp?????
Had it shipped to Hawaii and it lived there for years… salty/moist air 🤷♂️
12:17 sick tone. Reminds me if Slipknot's "the heretic anthem" intro
It's on my list to get... But the mini version 😂
It’s surprising versatile. I think the MH version is cool too.
I haven't tried one yet, but I want to now!
@@brian1749 I agree whole heartedly!
Band practice worthy gear. Update: I spoke tooeth sooneth. You love the amp. I figure its a no brainer for me.
Although Im not so in love with tubes. I was looking at the floor pedal amps and preamps like the Mooer and others .ugh decisions
Thanks for the comment. The reason I mentioned Djent is because it’s Misha from Periphery’s signature amp.
Stapletons “I was wrong” playing in my head
😂😂
All I wanna know now is how fat would those riffs sound if you used both amps at the same time? The 5150 is super scooped but that mid range attack from the invective rules, slayer those boys!
Can’t tap dance so that foot switch would kill me by that amp definitely CHUGS, DJENTS and is a FACE MELTER!
Tony danza tapdance extravaganza begs to differ
😂😂😂 Same. I dislike having to switch my amps settings. Maybe I just have bad balance lol.
Cool that bring out your 7 strings !!!
