Wow, these amps are so awesome! What did you guys think? If you had to choose either the Invective 120 or MH, which one would you choose? Also, that purple guitar isn't tuned to drop-A, I lied! It's tuned to drop-Ab... ;)
I am only at the clean with the boost part of the video and I am very impressed! Been on the fence with this amp, I got one leg over now just by that clean with a boost. Your video is what I have been waiting for. Bravo!
I think your video here just made the amp a serious contender for me. In fact I think you just made Peavey a boat load of sales of this amp. Once again, thank you for this.
I'm thinking my next amp might be the Invective MH Sounds great for my needs. Just got to wait a bit being just bought the 5150 iii. lol Gas is real Thanks for the inspiring videos so much detail and work into making these.
Seems like a lot of folks hate on these amps saying it has too much fiz. When I first got I thought the same thing. It takes some time to dial in things but once you do it kicks some major ass!
I have the 120. And the Invective 2 x12. It beats out my Laney IRT 60 and DSL 100. The Invective just does it all and sounds AMAZING. Big fan of this amplifier.
Can I first just say thank you? This is the most in depth video on TH-cam showing the true versatility of this amp. It isn't just a "METAL" amp, and you have really proven that. Awesome video!
Two years ago I discovered the channel (in my old channel if you see it) because I wanted to buy an amp. Now that I have one, I don't see as many videos of your channel as I did but I think your content and riffs are top notch, keep on doing it! 🤘🏻
I have the EVH 6L6 50 watt, and damn, it has a lot of gain. More dirt than a dumptruck. I normally run the blue channel gain on 3 and the red channel gain on 2, and that’s plenty to play metal. You definitely don’t need a boost to get it dirty enough, but a boost still does help for tightening the sound up. I would love to try an Invective, but it’s not something they would have at my local music store.
I just had to listen to that 8 string part at 15:30 on repeat a couple of times. You are spoiling us with amazing reviews and amazing music at the same time. Best channel on TH-cam, no doubt. I am using your guitar tones as the golden standard reference when I am mixing.
Had a 5150iii for about 3 years got the Peavey Invective 120 and I am very impressed! After getting the Invective my other amplifier just collected dust until I sold it. Your video is a great example of what all this amazing amplifier can do!
I just recently bought one, and absolutely love it. I've been using a Marshall JVM410H since the beginning of the year, and got nothing but total frustration out of it. All new tubes, bought a 1960A cab with greenbacks, EQ's in front of and behind the preamp, but it was nothing but harsh city without any presence. I got sounds in the first 5 minutes of using the Invective that made the 410 sound like a carefully executed fart. There's absolutely NO comparison between the two. It's like comparing s__t to gold, with the Invective being the gold. Oddly, I'm really using the "lead" channel more for heavy crunch, as it enhances the individual strings better - certainly if you're using single coils. The crunch channel is just sick fat. I use it for lead (gain on 7 is the sweet spot) with a TS, and it one of the fattest tones I've ever heard, with sustain for days. I have a Boogie MkIIC+, and (I never thought I'd say this) I swear to god the lead tone I get out of the Invective's crunch channel is better than the Boogie's. I also run the Master Boost at about 6, but keep the post gains on crunch and lead dimed completely out. No fizz, and it will take your head off if the master volume is at 3 or 4. Definitely a louder amp than the 410 - and am running the Invective through the Greenbacks. Anyways - thanks for the review, Jon. It definitely helped me make my decision. I haven't been this blown away with an amp since I bought the Mk IIC+ in '84, and I swear I like this thing better...
I’m surprised to hear that about the Marshall JVM410H. They’re supposed to be great for metal. Dave Mustaine of Megadeth uses them. I got to try one used at a music store once, but its quite a complicated amp and I didn’t have time to dial it in.
@@singleproppilot I've heard some that sounded great. However - those were all heavily modded. I started to get into that, but I just got tired of it. As much as they cost, they SHOULD sound great out of the box - like the Invective. No mods needed for it!
@@cornfilledscreamer614 BETTER THAN THE MKiic+?? Do you have a video demo because i NEED to hear that. I have a Mark III red stripe but i’ve been wondering what a more modern version of that tone would sound like
One thing to note about the MH is the boost, tight, and noise gate are only for the lead channel. I got this amp recently, having no decent pedals, and I think this amp is perfect for the bedroom player trying to get introduced to tube amp heads. The boost, tight, and noise gate means that you have less pedals to buy to get an awesome metal rhythm tone out of the box. The headphone line out is a nice touch. The cab simulator sounds almost identical to the 2x12 cab with vintage 30s that I'm using.
As much as I wanted the 120, I went with the MH. And I’m glad I did. Obviously It was cheaper and had more than enough of what I needed to get great tones for my home use. Great video of both.
@@SonicDriveStudio I also want to build a custom cab specifically for this amp. They make the peavey invective 212 120watt cab with the 75 creamback and a vintage 30. Designed for the 120 watt version of the invective. But since the MH is only 20 watts I’m trying to find a speaker combination that will have a similar sound as the 120 cab but allow the MH 20 to push the hell out of it.
Insanely comprehensive review, and the playing throughout was amazing! Easily the best demonstration of the breadth of tones this thing can do. Thanks!
This amp has been out for such a long time and there are no good sounding reviews apart from Keith Merrow's video. Very good video. You should get paid for it.
Outstanding video review!! Your riffs are very enjoyable and the explanations clear like channel 1. Great job! I think Peavey should make these amps in the USA, like in the old good days.
Nobody does a review better my friend! You’re reviews are so helpful and your songwriting is top notch as well. I always enjoy your riffs just as much as the review itself. I actually bought the evh 5150iii el34 because of your review and I absolutely love that amp. So versatile 😊
Loved the video Jon, very good and verstatile sounding amps. BTW this LTD with the aftermath needs a lot more love on your channel, it sounds so good !
I've seen a lot of reviews of this amp and this is probably one of the best ones I've seen. Very in depth breakdown of each feature and the different tones you can get out of this. Getting the mini head but definitely makes me want to get the 120 watt version too.
Nice! Awesome amps. I own and use the 120 through an invective 2x12 with an Eventide H9 in the loop. It's perfect for live use for me. And keeps things simple for me. Thanks for posting!
Gracias a este canal y su realmente buen trabajo , es que puedo conocer los sonidos y características de distintos amplificadores, la verdad que está información es oro
To be honest I've tested both amps, too. I was blown away by the Invective 120 for 2 years ago and still like it. Last week I've bought the Invective MH and I was really disappointed about the low end. Positive is the pristine clean channel with an unbelievable crips clean tone with low end. But the lead channel suck the low end away. It's getting more bad when you engage the crips and boost buttons. So I've sent it back to the music shop. I bought the MH for noodling in my living, but It does not get close to the big Invective 120. Now I've bought a Laney IRT Studio. I hope that I've more luck with this very versatile rack amp. Of course there is a difference between 6L6 and EL84.
Have you considered that you maybe had it dialed in too bright? Mine has plenty of low end but aith EL84 amps, if you turn them up too loud there is less headroom so the low end will get compressed sooner than with say a 100w amp.
Great video mate! They sound pretty good, the only thing I am not too happy about this line of amps is disparity in the wattage. it's either a massive 120W H or a 20W MH... Would have been better if they just focused or at least had a 50W option which way more realistic for 90% of people, since most of us don't really play Arenas! :D I still preffer the EVH 5150 Stealth 50W! Just my two cents! :D
Great review! I wish you would switch on/off the boost and/or tight switches so we could hear the difference it makes in the sound, it's hard to tell with different guitars etc.
John, your playing is so unique. I freaking love it. I hope you are recording all of these tunes. I would love to own a collection of your music. I dig the content of your videos too, but I mainly watch just to hear your music. Keep 'em coming good sir!
@@SonicDriveStudio I feel exactly the same way as Casey. I find your riffs and tune to be very motivating to practice. I listen to them when I'm driving in the car. Your music is very inspiring.
Watching this with that same purple guitar in my lap (it just arrived Monday). I have that big trex too lol. Nice video Jon. I’ve been thinking about the mh for a while now even though I’m using the 6505mh now.
Wow for both, as I don’t play shows and only really get to play at night gotta say the MH suits me. Awesome value for money! Would love to see a Revv G20 vs Invective MH
Awesome video as always ! I’ve been eyeing the Invective MH for a while now. I’ve been using the Hughes & Kettner GM40 as my main amp for a while now… I think this will allow me to better dial my gain tone… none of my local music stores carry this so can’t try it out before buying. Special order only 😕Cleans sound pretty awesome as well ! Love the video 👍
l Love this amp, I owned the 120 for about 3 months before returning it. It did not cut it in a live situation for me...have you tried cranking it yet? the frequencies change dramatically and get real fizzy. I literally had to use the amp with the master boost on and pre gain dimed and master also pretty high in live situations. EVH Stealth blows this amp out of the water with volume on 2 and no boost needed, plenty of tight gain on tap, It is hard to believe the Invective is rated at 120 tube watts.
Hey Jon, great Videos everytime. I play the MH with a Orange 1X12. An Ibanez RGA 8 with Seymore Duncan Blackouts and a Epiphone Matt Heafy 6 String. More? Sometime a Hall/Rever from Flamma👍🏻
I have the invective mh. It's good but was a bit disappointed it didn't sound as good as reviewed. The gain wasn't a tight but Fortin 33 boost helped and upgrading the v1 tube with high gain ecc803s.
So glad we got an SDS review of these. I had no idea they were so versatile. I'm still in the search for a predominantly bedroom amp that can handle the occasional jam session, but the full size head seems to have a lot more going for it. How do you think it would fair for mostly home use? Overkill? As to your closing question, I'd value your own answer. If you had to pick one, which one would you choose and why? Thanks for more great content, and keep it coming!
Well, the MH has the formfactor and low wattage going on but if you want an amp that does it all, the 120 is hard to beat. It's big and heavy but volume wise it's very manageable!
@@SonicDriveStudio If I weren't wary that the musician plays the amp (well done), and not the other way around, I'd be opening a line of credit as we speak. Seriously considering it anyways. Thank you sir!
If you were going to buy a small tube amp for your son for his 10th birthday to commemorate 4 years of guitar lessons, would the MH make the cut? Which other amps would be on your short list? He generally prefers Foo Fighters to Van Halen to Soundgarden to Metallica, and a few of the heavier Zeppelin tunes. I've been considering the MH vs PRS MT15 vs Revv G20... Thoughts?
The MH is a good option. 6505MH could also be cool. That would give you room for an external fx pedal like the Line 6 M5 or something. MT15 is also great and probably a little louder too. Both of these amps aren't great at classic rock though. Maybe the MT15 and some sort of classic overdrive pedal to boost the clean channel into a classic rock crunch. Both the Invective and MT15 are great for clean and high gain, just not great for crunch.
Hi Guitar J - I owned the 6505 mh and wondering if this Invective is just a repeat with more switches..? Do you think it’s voiced differently? I’ve also heard that it has the 5150 circuit in it... so much info :) not all correct unfortunately. Side note - I recently put some EMGs in my Drop B LTD and tried it through my WANGS HD dirty channel and OMG!! If you haven’t tried it, try it. All that ‘under mush’ disappears... incredible. Take care
Fantastic as always! I really, really like the small head with the LTD loaded with that bareknuckles pickups. Is there a chance we can get a short DI clip of that guitar? I’d like to run it through my setup and hear how it sounds as I’m planing to get one for my PRS. Cheers!
Your the King of amp head demos, great job. Looks like your enjoying your new place-space, congrats. My question is -is the 120 amp head quiet, i mean does it hum . I have a Fortin Cali 50 and its dead quiet. Have a few mesa heads but they have that hum. Im going for another quiet head on my next purchase. Ive had my eye on the invective for awhile , thanks for the demo( Erin Michigan )
Your work always has really sound great! So I also want to buy like your setting. But here is the question! how did you use Line 6 Helix Native? because I wonder if you just use the normal interface, is there anything you can't feel the latency?
I need some community suggestion, I’m planning to buy the Invective but I don’t know what to get, the 120 or mh, I don’t need 120 watts of power but I like all the features that comes with it, and my ears favours 6L6 over EL84 but the mh is so affordable and all I need really is 20 watts, 50 the most, anything past that it would be just too loud.
The Peavey Invective 120 in my opinion is the best modern high gain amp in the game at this time. However, I'm also a huge fan of EVH 5150 III Stealth.
Hey there! Amazing content again... I have an interesting question though and i'm surprised i can't find anything onlone about it.. Is it possible to use the poweramp of the 'MH' smaller version? Let's say i want to use the MH also to record the preamp of some other bigger amps i own at home? Or for instance the Synergy modules? Normally it shoudl be possible but this amp has no master volume? only presence and resonance? Thx in advance!
I have been watching my online music stores waiting for the MH to come in,and they keep showing "more to come soon",so I got tired of looking for them..now I have seen several videos lately so maybe they are finally getting a few here in the USA. Nice job here, and your playing is awesome.
I went thru the same thing man. I actually had one preordered thru Zzounds and also thru Sweetwater. After awhile of the release date pushed back and me calling and calling, Sweetwater promised me one from their next shipment (I think they have been getting like 10-20 at a time) So... about 2 months ago I finally got it and I LOVE it (MH that is). So my advice is to preorder one from Sweetwater and keep calling about updates. Squeaky wheel gets the turn 😉

The Lead channel of the 20W blow me away.
Really good tones, expecially the 120, of course!
Love the single cut LTD single pick-up 😍
Very cool! Thank you for the introduction.
l Love this amp, I owned the 120 for about 3 months before returning it.
I love the review as much as the killer guitar riffs
Nice amps, nice sounds and nice music too.
Awesome video and thank you for sharing your tips 👍
Great demos as always
@@XciteMike if you ended up regretting it, couldn't you return it? I really love these amps obviously so I'd say: go for it! :)
Love my Invective MH! 😎🤘
@@SonicDriveStudio Awesome advice - thanks for taking the time to respond!
All that ‘under mush’ disappears... incredible. Take care
Great Vid! Any chance you do a video on recording your music with drums? Thanks!
awesome - review - amps - guitars - guitarist ! cheers
i love your guitar riffs
Fantastic as always!
I really, really like the small head with the LTD loaded with that bareknuckles pickups. Is there a chance we can get a short DI clip of that guitar? I’d like to run it through my setup and hear how it sounds as I’m planing to get one for my PRS.
Cheers!
Hey! Long time watcher of the channel, do you still have the invective MH?
Your the King of amp head demos, great job. Looks like your enjoying your new place-space, congrats.
My question is -is the 120 amp head quiet, i mean does it hum . I have a Fortin Cali 50 and its dead quiet.
Have a few mesa heads but they have that hum. Im going for another quiet head on my next purchase.
Ive had my eye on the invective for awhile , thanks for the demo( Erin Michigan )
Thanks! Mine doesn't hum badly at all
Your work always has really sound great!
Awesome video as always dude 🤘 that Metallica shirt from Denmark at the royal arena show in 2017?
The Peavey Invective 120 in my opinion is the best modern high gain amp in the game at this time. However, I'm also a huge fan of EVH 5150 III Stealth.
Amazing review 👍👍
Was that a personal riff at 9:18 for the crunch channel? I love it.
Also the lead channel at 22:13
How are you running Ownhammer IRs with it? Are you recording into a load box ?
Could you compare it to the 5150 please?
The Invective seems to have the low-mids of the early 5150's with the upper mids of the 5150III's. Also damn the 8 string stuff sounds massive
Would you please check out the EVH 5150 Iconic?
Is it possible to use the invective footswitch on the MH version?
I have been watching my online music stores waiting for the MH to come in,and they keep showing "more to come soon",so I got tired of looking for them..now I have seen several videos lately so maybe they are finally getting a few here in the USA. Nice job here, and your playing is awesome.
I hope you can get one soon!
@@TheXxjmpxxx I will do that..my Sweetwater rep is awesome..when I spoke to him 2 months ago I told him I would be calling him soon,so now is the time.
Thanks for the info !
My sweetwater rep said they are on backorder until september. Guitar center has them in stock right now, I got mine last week and its defective so its going back, it kind of soured me on them but I may try a replacement.
@@grafforlock I got an email from Sweetwater about 5am saying they were back in stock,so I fell back asleep and woke up around 9am,saw on their website only 2 left so I got lucky and got 1 of the 2..I just got my shipping notice 10 minutes ago,so finally after all this time ! I will be running it into a Laney 2-12" with a V30 and G12H-75 in it,or my stock 2-12" EVH with the Celestion G12H-30 Anniversary speakers..this will go up against my EVH Stealth LBX-15 head,so should be interesting.
Has the MSDI sound been improved over the 6505mh?
I have a mesa mark v 35 and maybe I'll buy the peavey invective 120 which seems very interesting. can you please tell me how the peavey behaves compared to the mesa? how does the peavey behave at low volume? does it saturate so much? I know that you have made demonstrations of the 2 so you know him well. if you can help me it would be appreciated. thank you
This is the only review I've seen where the reviewer doesn't crap on the amp.
Why would anyone crap on these amps? I've seen some very positive reviews tbh
@@SonicDriveStudio Haha I really don't know. They're very "meh" about it. I have yet to try one, so I can't speak on it myself, but I'm definitely interested.
Especially on Dorothy 8-string. 😁
Could u explain how you run the signal chain to include your own Impulse responses? I have an Invective and an axefx3 and wanna place the Invective in a signal chain within the axefx. Would a 4 cable method work utilizing the msdi or do I need a loadbox. I'd love to run the Invective through the axefx to utilize pre and post effects, and then utilize IR's in my daw. Any help would be greatly appreciated man 🙏🤘
Both are great but I only need the mh 20 watt is good enough for me
Well done, as if I needed any more convincing.
Which drum vst do you use? Congrats for all the great videos!
Steven Slate Drums
Great review!!
That V30 workhorse package should be available in wav version. :(
is there electricity on the desert island??
Jon, you have so many tube amp. Do you have any plan making amp sim pluggin ;)
I wish haha. Wouldn't know how
