My VFR800 (2004) was a poor neglected commuter beast. Never washed and lived outside at the office or at Bristol Airport. Ran up and down the M5/ A38 for 3 years in all weathers. Never let me down, started first time every time. Great workhorse of a bike. And i only paid 2 grand for it.
I've had Honda VFR's since 1996, starting with a 750 and then upgrading to a 1998 VFR800, although I've only hade the early pre 2002 Vtec models, not the later post 2002 version in your video. As with many owners I've personalised my VFR with many modifications but without compromising the overall reliability and all-round usability. I'm a not vertically endowed, nor is my inside leg measurement, so a slightly lower Sargent seat was good option and further improved comfort, as was a recent change to flatter handlebars which means a more upright riding position with less wrist strain, similar to the Crossrunner riding stance. Unlike the VFR in the review, my bike does not have an under seat exhaust, but has a high level Remus carbon fibre unit that snugly tucks under the RHS pillion foot peg. All the hydraulic hoses were replaced with Goodrich for a lifetime of use and all fluids, including engine oil, changed for fully synthetic products. I fitted a dual USB socket and voltmeter in the fairing and a 1 inch ball mount (AKA RAM mount) and Quadlock for my phone. Suspension is now a bit sportier with an Ohlins rear monoshock and Maxton re-valved front forks. This does make for a slightly less compromised ride on bumpy roads, but is great on the twisty sections and fast sweeping bends. As with the bike reviewed it also has full Givi Monokey luggage rack & panniers. Other mods include a self-cancelling indicator module, alarm, full LED light conversion, Scott chain oiler, carbon fibre hugger and adjustable rider foot pegs. This has been a brilliant and reliable bike for the last 20 odd years and I've done some (heavily laden) long camping trips without a hitch.

It's not rogue but It definitely gives you a thrust forward to remember. I challenged a R8 Audi once and almost smashed into the back of it when my vtec engaged. Love them VFRs tremendously.

My two fave bike people from TH-cam in the same video, love it. Had several VFR750's back in the day, love that V4 engine. And plenty fast enough for the public roads.
Watched a lot of videos featuring that very bike. Was almost going to get one but the heavy weight deterred me unfortunately as my sole use was commuting. I do have room for 2 in the garage though. Thanks very much TMF and Rich, my favourite TH-cam’rs!
I use my for commuting and the weight isn't an issue. The bike is so we'll balanced that at slow speed you don't notice the weight. I've found it's just as easy to maneuver as the SV650. Treat yourself and go get one!
Neill Thompson it’s funny you should mention an SV because that’s the very bike I went with. I’ll have to go try one definitely, looking to do a bit of touring so it’ll be getting a look for sure.
VFR's are most definitely a classic that is revered by many. Its renowned for two things: 1) they last forever and 2) they are loved by a fanatical tribe of owners. I have admired them for a long time even though I've only ridden one a couple of times. I tried to buy an 8th gen in white here in the US back in 2014 but had trouble getting my dealer to bring one in so moved on. Impressive trust he has put in you given that in 85K miles he has only let you rider it :)
Another great video. My son had a 04 VFR800 with those pipes. Even when he was behind me it sounded like there was a V8 muscle car coming up on me. take care and stay safe.
Ahh yes, I forgot about the straight cut cam gears. Please correct me if I'm wrong, if I recall correctly they go all the way back to the original 1987 RC30 VFR750R, do they not?
Lovely bike Rich'! I loved my two VFR 750's, from 1994 & '95 that I had from brand new. I wish I still had one of them all these years later! I looked after them properly as well. All the best Rich' enjoy it Flyer!
Great review of a very well looked after bike. In the modern world where lots of riders are haemorrhaging money renting ( PCP ) the very latest iPad enabled bike it's good to someone buying a secondhand bike and getting great use out of it.
Great to see richy on your channel again been following him since his norway tour great bloke & a fellow midlander, Speaking as an ex honda mechanic 85,000 is nothing on one of those bikes its just run in :-) if you go to the states you will regularly see them with 200.000 miles on its all about the servicing they don't like running on dirty oil, A bike from a fantastic period of the company before the bean counters got there hands on them when everything was built to a quality not to a price P.S Keep the new format up andy love the direction the channels going in

The only thing you need to go to a shop for is the valve adjustments, which is every 40,000 miles iirc, the combined brakes have a few extra steps to bleed but totally doable by one person.
I own a 2005...was told by Honda bike shop not to bother with doin valves till I hit 50,000km ...total waste of money b4 then....well bike is 15yrs old ...never had a prob...only worth about 4k...wont ever bother about it. Btw this shop looks after a few VFR's one has 185,000km and another has 300,000km🙂
Missed this til now ! Great vid, I had two whilst having a BMW GS and K1300r........have to say I had to be strict with myself not to hop on the VFR all the time, sold the last one to justify the keeping the BMW but sort of wish It had been the BMW.
I owned the same model year (and colour) as Richy's bike. I also had the Staintune exhaust but ran a Power Commander as well. It really smoothed out the VTEC engagement point (it wasn't terrible, but it was noticeable) and did many, many miles on it. Wish I had it back, tbh. Follow both of these fine chaps on TH-cam and have been living vicariously through your videos during this crazy time! Thanks @themissendenflyer and @richyvida
I have a 2004 with an Ohlins, revalved fork, PC, dynotune, CZ wheels, Leo Vince exhaust, and other upgrades. The bike makes 101 hp and 54 ft/lbs. torque. It’s fun as long as I keep the RPMs up. Every now and again I think about selling it, but I just cannot do it!
I'm only a couple of minutes in and already missing my 2000 pre vtec vfr 800 interceptor !! You keep doing this to me young Mr Flyer ...ok I shall carry on with the video now ..peace and love to both of You 👍🏻☮❤
Yes the VF750S wasn't one of Honda's finest moments but all its problems are well documented and fixable - plus if it wasn't such a Dog they wouldn't have needed to go back to the Drawing Board and start the VFR family, the rest as they say is history.

To my mind, the VFR is Mr. Honda’s real-world masterpiece. Exotic and accessible; reliable as gravity and a reasonable cost of ownership. Aesthetically . . . well, it’ll pass, but it ain’t ugly either. It does demand a few “necessary” farkles: aftermarket exhaust, air filter, Power Comander, dyno-tuning, and maybe a bespoke seat. I adore my ‘09, but I’d add an earlier model (with gear driven cams) in a snap. The post 2010 examples don’t do it for me, but they’re interesting too. I doubt mine will ever be for sale . . . but hopefully, a grandchild will inherent it. Thanks for honoring it with a review, hopefully plenty more TMF reviews of real retro models will follow!
Windy Run: Just returned from a seven day “leaf-peeping” run through the Quebec Laurentien Mountains and I was a tad pooped: Gear is what I meant to write! Thanks for the correction.
As another owner of 2000 VFR 800 fiY since new, I can’t give it enough praise, super reliable, comfortable, super quick if required. I’ve absolutely pampered mine but there are great rewards. Sadly it getting a little heavy now for a 67 year old....
Been waiting for this vid since I saw it on your insta! Awesome bike 👍 This is the first “big bike” I ever rode after my boss gave me a go on his and I’ve been after one ever since. That’s how I found Richys vids, as he actually asked my boss to do a ride out with him (both VFRs) as my boss used to run a TH-cam channel himself (2WheelsWide) Still want a VFR800 😅 next year maybe. Great vid as always.
Lovely bike...you form a bond with a bike you have racked up big miles on. So many great bikes out there with very few miles on them..and some riders seem to actively keep the mileage down!! Richy does take terrific photos...but that top box.....!!😁 Cheers, Steve
Got a 2011 VFR800 myself & I love the Vtec, it was panned initially by a lot of bike testers for being a bit jerky when the Vtec kicked in but Honda improved the Vtec & made it a bit smoother & it goes like shit off a hot shovel. same with the linked brakes, I've nevere had a problem with them & not forgeting the ABS, this is a revalation if you've never driven a bike with ABS before.
The VFR800 is definitely my favourite bike except from my current girl k1600 GA. I do regret getting rid of my VFR and may consider Getting one again. Good Vid.
Vtech "kick" depends on how hard you twist the throttle and what gear you're in ... if you reef on the throttle in 1st through 3rd you def get a noticeable kick (currently riding a 2005 VFR800) if you just roll it on its almost imperceptible.
Honda VTEC, awesome wizardry lol. 2 different cam shafts with different profiles and hydraulically selects them depending on rpm. Lower rpm improves MPG and then higher rpms for performance.

Ok, the next bikes I recommend you try on Readers Rides should be a Cagiva V-Raptor 1000, then an Yamaha FZ750. Then finishing with a Suzuki TL1000R. So basically most of the bikes I’ve owned, love to hear what you think of them. 👍🏻😉. Great channel, what all content you post.
2:12 - VTEC basically manipulates the camshaft & valve opening & closing timings to make the engine operate more frugally during low speeds for fuel better economy and more aggressive timing for more power at higher speeds.

I’ll have to go try one definitely, looking to do a bit of touring so it’ll be getting a look for sure.
echo all the comments,i have the same model .has 70000 miles and runs tight, has full service history,no doubt that helps.great vid andy.
Surreal to see you riding *that* bike on your channel. Awesome!!!
Glad you liked it Scott!
Yes they sound mint don’t they! ....reminded me of a V8 sound too, who doesn’t love that!!
5th Generation VFR for me... nothing like straight cut gear driven cams giving that whine.
Amen to that :) Put 60K km on my 5th gen, bought 3 other bikes since then, still miss it sometimes ;)
Ahh yes, I forgot about the straight cut cam gears. Please correct me if I'm wrong, if I recall correctly they go all the way back to the original 1987 RC30 VFR750R, do they not?
Ivan Julian yes they do ☺️
I’ve just bought a mint 5th generation last of the gear driven cams 😎
I don't really like that sound. Awesome bike though , runs for ages.
They go for a song. All that bike for so little money.
Any chance of another VFR800 review of the latest model 2020 or even a 2019 please as not many on TH-cam? Thanks👍🏼🏍
Coming back on to two wheels after many many years. It’s the number 1 bike on my list. Old school and still a looker.
Givi top box is great - just put one of those on my CB500F (56 litre) this week. Highly recommend.
I second that!
Always fancied one, but never ridden one. Richys is a lovely looking VFR, Very privileged to ride sir 👍👍
Great to see richy on your channel again been following him since his norway tour great bloke & a fellow midlander, Speaking as an ex honda mechanic 85,000 is nothing on one of those bikes its just run in :-) if you go to the states you will regularly see them with 200.000 miles on its all about the servicing they don't like running on dirty oil,
A bike from a fantastic period of the company before the bean counters got there hands on them when everything was built to a quality not to a price
P.S Keep the new format up andy love the direction the channels going in
Blimey, there’s a direction??! 🙂
I thought the bean counters came in when they stopped making the VFR 750 and the gear driven cam engine.
@@splodge57 Gear driven went up to the early noughties & the 800 vfr superb bike, Nothing wrong with the vtec great engine gives you two bikes in one like everything including women lol you just gota maintain them
@@TheMissendenFlyer well if your winging it mate your doing a good job :-)
Deviant Rider - mines a 95 VFR750,think ive clocked up about 10,000 miiles since the last Oil change (Amsoil 20w 50) and its still quite clean, what the brand of your choice ?
It really feels like you guys took bike-vlogging to a hole different level with your cooperation videos and i just love it...lovely to se both of you again and drive safe!
Sheers from Sweden
Cheers Joakim!
Richy is a top man and I know you two are mates, but I think that was a really big deal allowing you to ride his “beloved”. Not even sure if I would allow my best friend a spin on my beauty. 👍🏼 😎
Another very nice readers rides using your co pilot "Goose's bike" 85,000 miles on the clock wow & wow the Japanese certainly know how to build bikes! (Bloody fantastic vlog Bike vs Plane should be up for an TH-cam award)
Is there such a thing?!
@@TheMissendenFlyer There should be!
Greetings from the US of A........On camera the bike looks to be in showroom condition. V4's do have such a unique and sweet sound. Both of you, enjoy your channels and instagrams.....
Great, I had a 2002 in read. Comuted to work and motorway between London & Midlands. They were so well built 💯✅️
Big fan of Wildbad Touring, think Richy is prepping that bike ready for another of his Picos tours. The info, images and vids you guys put up in the touring vids inspires us to get up plan and book our own tours. Been great to see some of my favourite channels getting together for collaborative work.
Very nice VFR 👍👍👍
Cheers BM....and yes sounds like a big group on that Picos tour this year....did you see my piece in MCN yesterday?? 😉
@@TheMissendenFlyer Nope but now I have to go and buy a copy!
@@TheMissendenFlyer Get it 👍👍 wife and I enjoyed Picos at our pace stopping when we wanted.
I bet one big service would be half the value of the bike. Great to see it’s still going and looked after. 👍
As an owner of a 2000 VFR since Day 1, I say great bike! You're still breaking it in!
How many miles on yours Morgan?
Missed this til now ! Great vid, I had two whilst having a BMW GS and K1300r........have to say I had to be strict with myself not to hop on the VFR all the time, sold the last one to justify the keeping the BMW but sort of wish It had been the BMW.
Future classic for sure, twin exhaust pipes, stylish looks, iconic vtec engine, reliable & tough. Awesome bike
Thanks for watching and for stopping by!
You keep doing this to me young Mr Flyer ...ok I shall carry on with the video now ..peace and love to both of You 👍🏻☮❤
Yep still a fantastic motorcycle even my old non vtec was an amazing all rounder 👍🏻👍🏻☮☮❤❤
....I'm loving the "young" Mr Flyer thing.....
@@TheMissendenFlyer I think it's here to stay ..after all you are younger than me ..just ...at least I'm pretty sure..nearly 52 me 👍🏻☮❤
I'd say go and but one again! Prices after lowish for the pre VTEC, but on the up as people want those gear driven cams.
My first bike was Richy's bike's grandfather - a VF750S. Love the Honda V4s, but the old ones are a complete ball-ache. That VFR is a beauty!
Yes the VF750S wasn't one of Honda's finest moments but all its problems are well documented and fixable - plus if it wasn't such a Dog they wouldn't have needed to go back to the Drawing Board and start the VFR family, the rest as they say is history.
@@paultanton4307 It was the bloody carbs I had most problems with. Had to get a recon set sent over from the US to Thailand. Oh, and the cam chain tensioners... The clutch push rod seal... A phantom air intake leak... The electrics... The rectifier... Getting the carbs balanced... Keeping the carbs balanced
Great video again TMF. I used to own a 09 plate VFR had to sell it due to ill health and it is a very good bike.
Owned a VFR750 RC36 way back. Best bike I´ve had in more than 40 years of riding...
I believe the older ones had gear driven cams...that's what gave them that unique sound
I have a vfr750 97 model is in great nick and is up for sale 35000 miles new stainless downpipes and stator rewound and new battery and r/r.
Windy Run: Just returned from a seven day “leaf-peeping” run through the Quebec Laurentien Mountains and I was a tad pooped: Gear is what I meant to write! Thanks for the correction.
Fabulous headlights (x4 H4's!). Nightmare to change.
You need the skill of a Neuro Surgeon, hands of a toddler and patience of a saint.
My '02 VFR800 VTEC has 76000km. Recently did the lifters and cam tensioners again. Look after your valuables! These bikes are bullet-proof.
Love both of the channels, can't believe Richie let you ride the VFR!
As another owner of 2000 VFR 800 fiY since new, I can’t give it enough praise, super reliable, comfortable, super quick if required. I’ve absolutely pampered mine but there are great rewards. Sadly it getting a little heavy now for a 67 year old....
About to go and look at one of these, very pleased to find this video. I'm sold!
Great bikes....sounds gorgeous in particular!
Been waiting for this vid since I saw it on your insta! Awesome bike 👍
This is the first “big bike” I ever rode after my boss gave me a go on his and I’ve been after one ever since. That’s how I found Richys vids, as he actually asked my boss to do a ride out with him (both VFRs) as my boss used to run a TH-cam channel himself (2WheelsWide)
Still want a VFR800 😅 next year maybe.
Great vid as always.
Hope your boss sees this comment and gives you a raise
@@thomasfrank280 Ha! 😅 Thanks man.
My first Big bike. Cracking all rounder and I would happily have another one.
So nice to watch (and listen)! Cheers, Tim
My red 05 has 16k. Makes 108hp, with all the usual mods. I absolutely LOVE it...
Honda VTEC, awesome wizardry lol. 2 different cam shafts with different profiles and hydraulically selects them depending on rpm. Lower rpm improves MPG and then higher rpms for performance.
Man, that guy takes care of his bike.
I need some tips!!!
It was starting to get a bit scabby. Not terrible but showing it’s mileage. He had it refurbed. Check his Chanel, he did a video about it.
I have the 5th gen in millennium yellow and its a magical machine. Its also a complete steal here in the US!
Bit of man love there boys... on about Ritchie's beast... TMF... cracking vlog and I can't stop looking at VFRs now...
A great review of the VFR800..looks like it just rolled out of the showroom floor.. Well done TMF 😀
...well done Richy I reckon!
This review inspired me. Bought me a 2002 VFR last month 😎 What a bike!👍
Great to hear! Glad you like it - a lot of bike for the money these aren't they....
@@TheMissendenFlyer Love it! My two girls do too (9 and 11)😄 Hope I can get to have at least one long trip on it this summer. So far it has just been short trips (Lørenskog/Fet/Leirsund/Sørumsand) Have a nice day, buddy👍
You too!
Just chopped in my NC750X for a 2016 VFR800F with titanium Acrapovic slip on pipe., and Honda panniers. Just like the one Richy tested in the Lake District in 2019. So smooth and much quicker than the NC. Looking forward to putting some miles on it
Congratulations!
I've been looking forward to this since you said you were doing it and it hasn't disappointed!
Excellent!
There’s no doubt about it - you’re a blessed man Andy! Yours aye, Alan
Always good to hear from you Alan!
Rich hardly lets anyone touch his bike, based on the evidence of his vids, let alone ride it! Did you feel his stare burrowing into your back!!! Mind you that bike looks in absolutely perfect nick - come to think of it, rather like yours!! Great stuff Andy - Yours aye, Alan
Great video & a great bike TMF. Say you both had a blast that weekend!! 😉🤣🍻 Richy is a real decent fella. Awrabesht from the Emerald Isle mate. 😉👍
Same to you Alan....and yes, we had a top weekend together..
That's my favourite stretch of road. Loop around and then reaching Bryant's Bottom. 😁
Just bought a 7 year old gen 8 with only 748 kms on it. Can’t wait to hear it at 7k rpm!
I passed my test in Nov last year, and bought a vfr the same year as this as my first bike. Have ridden it every day to work, rain or shine and I love it. Only downside is that it's very thirsty....
I have a 97 vfr750 and can get easy 55 mpg
Maybe so, but Honda's figures for the 00s VTEC was 38mpg....would struggle to get that......
The lack of noise is the problem with electric motorcycles. So this video proves that noise matters. Nice bike
The Travelling Wilburys of moto vloggers, great job, cheers.
High praise indeed!
I always preferred the non Vtec VFR800 with the ultra reliable gear driven cams which Is even more iconic 😊
It looks like VTEC is going on the Fireblade for 2020.
Watch all content 🙄
What a timeless machine! That was fun. Thanks again and well done as always
Had a VFR 750 in the late 80s.
If the performance is similar the powerband is shocking and rewarding all in one when it kicks in.
Wonderful motorbike, I remember doing a tour of Ireland on one. Happy days.
2:12 - VTEC basically manipulates the camshaft & valve opening & closing timings to make the engine operate more frugally during low speeds for fuel better economy and more aggressive timing for more power at higher speeds.
Your welcome to try my bike!(BMW boxer cup replika 2004!)but think you might be a bit short??I'm 6ft2,& on tip toes on it!I live up by the cat&fiddle!Other bikes are z1000sx on a 17 plate,a 03 Suzuki sv650,with only 4,000 miles on it.rt1200 on a 05 plate and a old Honda Deuavil!!!love your videos!😀👍👏
