Good for you, Rich, for testing and refining your skills. As I've told many younger riders "You can't learn to ride in the rain... Until you learn to ride in the rain". After many, many years of riding consistently, my resume reads as follows: I'm still alive and have never been seriously injured. I blame Keith Code's "A Twist of the Wrist" and many (many) hours of repetition in walmart parking lots late at night. Kudos to you, my friend, for doing your due diligence, even after all these years, all the roads, and the tens of thousands of miles you've ridden. The best reward is going home to your family in one piece. And the knowledge that EVERYONE can get better...safer...smarter. Cheers from sunny Phoenix! :)

There is no place for 'ego' on a roadracing track. Your skills are evident for everyone to see, most importantly, for yourself to reflect on and gain new insights on how to improve your skills and riding.
That was great Richy! Lovely to see the old girl getting a chance to strut her stuff, definitely be a better choice than the ‘big lad’ for the track, although I’m sure it would have been fine. Really enjoyed it and it was great to see you growing in confidence through the day.

I have done nearly a hundred trackdays at Mallory. I love that track. The big corner after the start finish straight is my fave. No braking, from top speed on my old GSXR750 L9 track bike, nick it down two gears and drop in. Luvly jubly.
The Silver Lady is begging to have those chicken strips used on that rear tyre 🤣 The track is the perfect place to learn, pure riding concentration instead of wasting brain effort on traffic and bad roads, best environment to increase awareness of yours and bikes limits 👍
Well done Richy in difficult conditions, I had a similar day at Caldwell Park, learnt a great deal, thei instructors are great people and excellent riders to boot, spot on with the comments on the wet track, yet out on your own, no problems, mind tricks. Ride safe.
That was fun to watch! I could tell your confidence level increased during the course of the lessons. This would be fun to do but I'd rather do it on a bike with a clutch rather than a DCT. Thx for sharing!

I probably wasn't clear...my bike is a DCT and sometimes I wish I still had a bike with a clutch...it made me feel more engaged and like I had better control. The friction control is so different. I guess I meant I wouldn't want to do a track day with my current DCT bike. 👍😏

And when asked how he won the World Superbike Champion, he said, "Track time." 😎There is NO substitute for...track time.
That first lap reminded me of my first time at Mallory Park as an 18 year old kid. Damp, nervous and no clue where I was going. But as the day went on I grew in confidence until you threw the bike into the gravel trap at full chat. No harm was done to the bike or me 😂😂
Great day Richy. Have you thought about taking the IAM bikers course? Potentially a life saver. As a lead up to mine I did a day on an airfield which included slow speed riding, going around cones at increasing speeds, emergency stops, evasive action….etc
Why have I not come across this video of yours before? I've never been really bothered about going on track because I just think I'm to much of a amateur 😊and if I feel like I'm being pushed I will end up off. that's why I've never tried it. but this has pricked my ears up.
It’s definitely an experience and really good for enhancing your skills. And you really don’t have to worry about being a beginner, as there’s plenty more like you. You chose which group you want to go in, also. So really, there’s no pressure. 👍
What a great day Richy, i keep getting asked by Plymouth IAM guys to do a track day, i have always been worried of dropping the VFR Rich left me and the guys keep saying it's not racing & go at your own pace, i still call it Rich's bike, but after seeing that i could be on the next one, great bunch of guys at IAM , my Advanced Test next month
The wet is a weird one. You go offload on the big lad thrapping along gravel lanes in the wet and it doesn't bother you , yet wet tarmac sets alarm bells ringing,🤔 iam exactly the same... Nice circuit mallary Park..

Great video. Although a little confused that IAM Roadsmart was demonstrating the racing line which goes against everything that should be done on the road and "the system" with regards to positioning. I get it will make you a more progressive and smoother rider unless I missed something at the beginning of the video. You certainly progressed the weather at the start not being the best. Wonder if sub consciously you was apprehensive about dropping your Silver Lady as I know I would of been especially with the connection you have with her.

I raced AFM here in Northern California at Sears Point Raceway for 5 years with an expert class roadracing license, plus many track days over the years, so this brings back fond memories. Bottom line is...there is NO *substitute* for track time. The more you pound around racetracks, the better rider you will become. Just a quick question, Rich. Do you have the video/audio gear and set-up you use listed somewhere? I know you use two GoPros; what is the rest of the kit you use? Thanks, mate!

I used to have a CBR-f3 as a daily in the rain it was great sold that bike a I now have a vfr fi and she feels horrible in the wet on corners tyres are ok suspension is ok lovey bike just no front end feel not sure if it’s just me.
Need to blow the garage dust off my 2002 "DucHonda" in Italian Red and make some runs up and down the Columbia River Gorge! Love me some viffer action!

The Insta is good quality then 😂 Great to see the VFR out again, you still on the PR5's or did I see the PR6s on her? They're so similar. I've got them on my VFR now, but only bcos there are no PR5s in the country anymore, at least according to my guy that looks after my VFR. Hardly noticed the difference between the 5s and 6s on a 3 day, 700 mile trip to Glen Coe and back a fortnight ago. Just enough to scrub'em in really.
Thanks Rich! She’s still on 5’s at the mo. The 6’s are supposed to have a 15% increase in wet braking I believe. I’ll defo be putting some on when these 5’s are shot. 👍

@MISTERSEANIE I think I can 'Trump' or at least 'equal' that. I managed to get £34 into my 37 year old Honda 500 a couple of weeks ago in Dolgellau. Add in a small packet of 'Cheddars' and a Diet Coke I walked away with a bill of £38.84. I kind of 'cheated', as I had to 'drive through' 3 petrol stations in order to find some of that 'Premium' E5 stuff. Just a heads up to anyone around Aberdovey / Tywyn that shouldn't be using E10. Nearly running on fumes in the end. Anyone that needs E5 get yourself an app or two. Texaco say they have it...but not in all their stations.
Sorry, but can't see the point of riding slowly around a track on a wet gloomy day or indeed a dry bright day which if you did you would want to be led by a race instructor such as Peter Hickman or John McGuinness. I hope you had the Michelin Road 5 tyres on or even the 6s which are now the current ones. I would have thought Road Smart was best done on the roads?

Done the same at Croft, great fun on a big GS, tiring but a great confidence builder for the road…your nerves go eventually as did the rain😀

Yeah with them using very similar pattern to the 5’s they can only be as good if not better. Hated the 4’s also! 3’s and 5’s for me! 👍
