  • This video will cover these topics:
Weak points in evo cam chest and how to correct them.
Lifter wheel breakage - which can easily take out your whole motor - and how to detect and fix it.
Front pully and the leak problem behind it.
A few other tips as well.
My book, Josie’s Journey. Josie’s is not a motorcycle book, but rather a spiritual book told in the story of one man’s journey to freedom:

Man, every Evo owner in the country should watch this. You basically cover every weakness in that engine/drivetrain. I still remember changing out the rear pully and belt on my old FXRT because I ran the belt too loose, and it wore through the case hardening on the pully. Teeth squared off and cut that belt to pieces! Lesson learned.

Slight spoilers of Scottys book below.
I bought your book recently, I feel like I've found an old friend. Currently, 29, in the Navy ( on a carrier right now).
Your message and videos bring me peace and reassurance that I'm not insane. The death/rebirth of your characters.... I've felt that, it's like bartering with your soul/self, in how you interact with the outer world, and thru pain comes transformation. Too relatable. One day, I'd be honored to ride with you.
    Thanks Scotty

Think id go nuts being on a ship that long Chris. Spent 6 days on one once and couldnt wait to get off it by the end. That whole book leads to a punchline at the end that brings it all together. And as u probably already know, that thing is like 5 completely different stories in one. The last ones the longest and by far the best i think.

No doubt about it, fixing your own stuff, or making someone else's throwaway stuff work is satisfying.
I just finished up a kitchen table and chairs set for my wife. The neighbors ordered a set, and it showed up broken. They got a new one from the same store. That one shows up damaged. The neighbors tossed them out. I picked up the pile, and in a 3 hrs of work, consisting of some drilling, glue, clamps, a couple of braces, the wife has a new dinner table with chairs. Good on that shop for opening up their place for you. Thanks for letting me live the nomad life through you, Scotty!

The old ones are geared to low as im sure youll see. Easiest way to fix that is to intall a 34 tooth front belt pully (2 extra teeth). And no belt change nessasary, just slide the rear wheel forward some. Each tooth will change your 5th gear about 5 mph. Id buy a steel pully from either Andrews or Baker.

I didn't know anything about Harleys. My friend said his was making a noise. I went to his house and listened. (I am good with a lot of different engines) I told him it sounded like a tappet. I went on utube and looked up how to remove tappets from harley. He had adjustable pushrods. Sure enough bad tappet. It wiped out cam too. Ultima engine. Found new cam on ebay. Used new S&S lifters. Didn't replace plastic breather and now wish I did. Any way liked working on it so much I bought a 1998 Dyna super glide for myself. Replaced lifters cam bearing breather SS&S and put in Andrews ev23 cam.

Scotty, good description of the cam chest parts and operation. To me, it’s the most complex part of the engine. Bearings and gears all wearing no matter what oil you use or how often you change it. I just went thru all kinds of hell rebuilding my old Shovel. The cam chest presented the biggest fitment issues. Good luck with that new engine.

@scottykerekes2471 im sure you are aware that any time the Mo-Co improves upon a part they assign a "dash" number to it. I've had the same issue you had with the previous part number and only lasted 30k miles. Since then, I've purchased the Dash B ones, and so far, they've been holding up significantly better. I've got 60k on my dash b ones and recently pulled it apart just for peace of mind on my end, and they're all still good. I threw them back in and will address them in another 40k miles. I think they made the shaft thicker, or possibly the bearing was improved upon. I wish I knew....
I do know that they're significantly improved upon from their previous version. Just my 2 cents.

    That motor sounds sweet

Sounds like you got it all covered Scottie. You pretty much swapped everything but the compensator. As clean as that motor was, you should be good for a while. I have a 98 FLSTC and do basic maintenance every 3 months. The only thing I ever had issue with was my lifter block screws came loose on me all at once, all 8 of them started backing off and I lost some oil, scraped the blocks and lifters, replaced blocks, lifters, cam, and pushrods. Now they're blue lock tight at torque spec max. No more issue. I know this is going to sound crazy but your motor seems louder than before. But mine has that louder sound as well and I'm running stock pipes. I'm looking for another video with your old motor running so I can compare the sounds. Be safe...

Yeah. This pipe used to be a lot quieter. I even tepacked it but it keeps getting louder. They tell me pipes become "seasoned" and change sound. I think its true.

Why do I work on my own vehicles of any kind? Simply because I can, and I know it was done "right". I say that but there's obviously someone who's better than me. It's just that I absolutely know what was done when I did the repairs. That's the satisfaction of doing it myself, and I've seen the condition of the motor for myself.
It's also good th know you're running again and won't get snowed in for the winter in Utah.

Replace the INA cam bearing, and put a Torrington bearing. 93 was last year for factory Torrington bearing.
