Aw Gee! No burnout! Hell, Jay he wouldn't mind! My cousin (Paul Pfohl) had a 1952 Allard with a Cadillac motor and a special LeMans body. He used to take us kids in the neighborhood for rides in it. We'd go around the block at 120mph+ and as soon as he got it back home he'd park it in his garage right away before the cops showed up. Great fun!
I could look at this car all day.
Okay I LOVE that air filter. To think, It's on a modern engine... Also good old fashioned camming... This isn't tuning this is straight up Modding. I love it when real work is put into these projects.
"Stupid paddleshifters..." You are a genius, Leno.
I must agree.... Electronic/sensor(fly by wire) driven shifters lack something! Good ol' manual transmissions give you full control :)!
1blisslife Is the enganging and timeless mechanical feeling.
If one knock totally manual shifting will Jay come over and give you the paddle?😂.
I love that it is so bare bones, has a real stick shift, and is just well built instead of being all tech'd and safety'd out. Also, that steering wheel is beautiful.
What a beast!
Love that sound...
Carol Shelby got his start racing in Allards!
Absolutely gorgeous car.
Looks great and before Jay commented I thought the back 1/3 from the seat and back ..wheelarches and trunk really look like an AC Cobra. That engine note is great as well.
i met mr allard at a car auction once. he was there with the owner of a j2x just hanging out. hes such a cool guy and down to earth. the car was amazing too, the build qualitys so nice on them and theres lots of little trick things done all around. the j2x i saw had a ctsv motor in it though, was really nice
i fucking love Jay Lenos garage. i would watch this if it was on T.V. FUCK YEAH JAY LENO
Love it. I would love to drive one of these
Horsepower is all in the cam with these kinds of engines.
I remember drooling over the Allard in hot rod magazine. Some craftsman built a few cars out of American sheet metal to resemble this type car.
What a sound.
My uncle owned an Allard J2X. he had the Cadillac engine in it. He tells of having to put the vehicle in neutral as he coasted by the local police, as it was too loud for the man. I also remember looking at the speedo showing 120+ MPH, as a teenager. Fast and fun!
These are so good, thank you for the uploads
Now that is how that charger should sound like.
Great vid. Keep em coming
Love your show, Jay.
When Jay offers to buy a car, he must really like it...
Like the one he bought out from under me in Everett Wa..... Tatra !! He had cash and I didn't !!
Damn cool!
Proud of being from Montreal and having a Nana named Allard
You mention the idea of a Ford Cobra. Shelby did race an Allard -- 1952 J2. It's still around.
All cars built by Shelby are based on Allards, and Allard cars started his illustrious career. Without Allard, the mustang would have never existed!
The man is an Artist !
9:05 You can touch the ground...He pulls his hand back as fast as possible when he sees the exhaust there hahahah :D
Merci Jay.
I've always wanted a modtro car. This just reaffirms my desire.
This brand made understand how I've become such a petrolhead, it's named after me! Or.. maybe the other way around.
I worked in a Mazda dealership for about a year, and driving them is the closest thing I know to driving a street-legal go-kart with a windscreen. Not Lightning fast, but a hell of a lot of fun. There is a crazy Australian upgrade known as the Bullet Roadster. Take an MX5/Miata, change its body panels for fibreglass, and add a Lexus 4 litre V8, with an optional supercharger. Quick is an understatement
Beautiful car. Very well executed build quality.
I always got blullied with my name.. .....but now im proud of it
Own it and build a car
Awesome car Jay, Oh Canada..........
Great car. Well done.
I just love that British styling.
My favorite car to use in The Saboteur
I remember the Allards (Cad Allard, and maybe Packard Allard?). I think there were a couple that raced in the 17 Mile Drive races in Monterey/Carmel. Just looked it up: it was the Pebble Beach road race.
looks gorgeous
What a beautiful car! I'm 6 ft/4, sure I would not fit in it, but I can dream.
Love that sound!!
Sweet ride!!!!
that big black plastic windshield washer knob kills the feel of the whole car 4:40
Doc McHenry in Silverlake had a Cad Allard, supercharged. One time he pulled on the inside of my Grandpa's 1959 T-Bird with the 430 Lincoln motor at a stop light, and Gramps got promptly got blown into the weeds by the mighty Allard J2X. Copies that fail to utilize the swing axle front suspension, or are made of fiberglass, and have a Mustang II front steering and control arms leave me cold. Like this one does. History strained through a dollar meter.
But an original is $350,000, these sell for $125,000, not that I could afford either, but they certainly have a place in the market.
My favourite car ever is the Auburn Boattail Speedster too. Please do a segment on it Jay!I think it would be nice.
stop at 6:09 when jay is saying "off ". He looks hilarious!
I think what Jay was referring to is the old style donor type kit cars, not kits built from the ground up.
what a beautiful car you have jay
i proudly own a 67 mustang coupe and i could care less if it is, my biggest advantage is that where i live im exempt from emissions testing. every week someone asks to buy it so far only men have been the ones offering but i never intend to sell it. i aim restore and modify it. i tend to be a chevy guy but i prefer the looks of a 67 mustang over most cars
Sometimes I think Jay Leno forgets who he is... "if he sees me do a burnout he'll kill me!" BUT its a HEMI!! and You're Jay Leno!
Gol Darn it Jay, I'll say it again- throw some glasses on or something to protect your eyes in those open air rigs...yeesh !!
Fine looking car.
Nice 6.1 hemi. Sweet ride
Looks like a great ride!
1 more i like power to weight like jay says all lumpy cams i dig it thanks jay
I remember the bad old days of the 80s Kit Car! :-)
Thing is, some people think they're STILL like that. What I was trying to say was that the lines are now blurring between a Kit Car & a Specialist Car & the only difference is, if it's available factory assembled OR for home-build then it's a Kit Car but if it's ONLY available factory-built then it's a Specialist Car.
I just felt Jay (maybe unintentionally) was using the words Kit Car as an insult, which is a bit unfair on today's industry.
awesome ! I love it car!
Two sets of golf clubs! Sign me up!
WOW!!! It is an absolutely beautiful car. I have always found it most interesting that the best looking cars have such a balance of looks between the shape of a muscle and a woman’s physique. The shot around the six minute mark is reminiscent of the AC Cobra. This is one of those rare times where someone gets it right and creates a balance between artwork and engineering. Thank you for the video Mr. Leno.
P.S. - What do you plan to do when you retire? Besides relax… lol.
A lovely car ,WE get a bit touchy about this things 🇬🇧
there are a lot of small car manufacturers now in our modern world good for them
There's a reason Miatas are so popular.. They're a lot of fun!
Another great car that Leno did as quick and cool video. Thanks Jay .
I have been looking at little 2 seat open sports cars. The most fun for the money while still being practical and easy to work on when needed.
Check out the LS3 powered Miatas that "Flyin Miatas " is building and selling...turnkey cars with 430 or 480hp and getrag trans and differential in a miata. 1990 through 05 fully street legal with ODBII compliance. Check them out. Puts monster miata to shame.
Why is there a stigma when it comes to kit cars? There is ABSOLUTELY nothing wrong with them Jay!
Great vid Mr J Ever hear of Ocelot Race Company check them out I just an old car guy That green thing reminds me of my grandfathers car he built by hand in the forties same color but then he worked for cady/Gm all his time in the business Thanks for the show
Even Jay knew the guy was bullshitting about the "600h.p."
hahaha he really said "maybe some DNA"
Very enviable.
That's some car !
Indeed, Carrol Shelby raced an Allard J2.
some people you can't please. I remember trying to stream video back in the 90s. Kids are now so spoiled.
have a feeling jay wants this car hehe
sweet.
The Allards I remember had Cadillac engines.
Quite a few different engines, mostly American.
Every time you review a car like this, I wonder why you never review a Caterham 7... seems like something you would like and it has such an interesting story with Lotus.
Jay it's not boosted so the only other way to get to 600 hp is a cam. I been saying change the cam for over 5 years. So what's the peak hp rpm?
If was with Allard sales, I would have brought an Order Sheet with me. Sales 101
I hope you sent a copy of the video to the owner. It would be a nice touch and might add a wee bit of value to his car down the road.
That is a car to drive up on 101, all the way up to Alaska.
Sydney Allard built the first AA Fuel DRAGSTER seen in England
1960s..
Look it up!
Thanks😎😎😎😎😎
I like the fact it has modern components in an old body design. If you have a great sports car wouldn't you prefer a modern, more reliable engine and braking system? I understand collecting, but I'd rather have a car I can use during good weather. This car is a collector, but also is usable.
Very cool video and car.
Ok now , I live in Montreal and it's a great and unique city but it is NOT the MOST beautiful city in north america Jay. Thank you.
This is off topic but i want to see the fallow up video you promised us on the modifications you made to the Fiat 500 Abarth you bought last year.
Canada at one time, was on the state departments travel advisory list recommending that business people not travel there.
If Allard hadn't done it first, I would have said this is what happens if you crossbred an Austin-Healey roadster with an AC Cobra. The rear end and the cockpit look so much like them, as well as the balls-out growl from their huge side pipes. The Austin-Healey looking front end makes it distinctive enough nore to be mistaken for anything else. While the nose may resemble a Healey, it's not a "clone" of anything
The issue is that many of these videos were filmed years ago for Jays old web site. Unfortunately they were all 480p, and there is nothing they can do about it :(
Price is about $150k depending upon the engine and options you choose.
It's slightly frustrating when Jay asks a question and doesn't wait for (nor listen to) the answer. He does it here, but not as bad as when he invited a Tremec guy to talk about transmissions. Jay asked and asked and never listened to this very capable person who really had some interesting answers.
Bomb
I actually have +- the same one in my '68 VW type 3 ;-)
This is not a current video.
It was filmed a few years ago, and is just now being uploaded onto TH-cam..
ohh man.nice..
Oh, and trying to get an eloquent, informed and honest reply into 500 characters is damn near impossible (Give us a bit more room please Mr TH-cam!). My apologies if my reply came across a bit brusque but it was heavily edited to fit... :-)
Carroll Shelby did get the idea for his cobra from Allard, by taking a V8 engine and placing it into a relatively small sports like car. Eventually, Carroll Shelby was producing a new car called the Shelby cobra and it was inspired by the cars built by Sydney Allard.
Shelby owes a lot to Allard, his driving of a J2 started his career
@@Tzhz yes he did
Leno tested Leno approved
Is thst a BMW R100 motorcycle on the lift in the background, is there a restoration blog for her?
So how do they get around safety standards since this is being built from the ground up?
If it's built on an old frame, motor, or hell I've even heard of axle housings, then you can technically register the car as being of that year therefore it's exempt.
