      I would say that no matter the car if there isn't a interesting story behind it frankly doesn't need to be in the show.

    I understand the value of the production crew and I’m sure they are worth every dime. But I’m really enjoying these quarantine episodes with just Jay, a camera, and a car. It seems more pure that way, even with the occasional audio mishap.
    Not to mention we get to see mostly cars we didn’t know much about. This car was very interesting, and there can’t be many out there because of lack of demand. It’s nice to learn about these cars. And of course, the whole story about how it was Johnny Carson’s car when he was a kid and teenager. What a great story. And that is sometimes what makes a car truly special, not the numbers matching, or the value, it the horse power, but the story that goes with the car. Thank you for continuing to put out these videos even during quarantine.

    This is why Leno's garage is interesting. Jay collects "cars". All cars, not just rare and expensive ones. And they all seem to be equal in his esteem. This car is just as cool as a Lamborghini in it's own way. I like that, I could own a car like this.

    • @jamesslick4790
      @jamesslick4790 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I like cars like this MORE than a Lambo. It's far more interesting than any newer stuff, And the "exotics" do nothing for me at all. I've always been interested in cars "real" people owned. Gives a more realistic perspective on history.

      What's interesting to me is that Jay misses his friend and doesn't come out and say it. If you notice, there was no chair behind Johnny's desk.. Jay doesn't sit behind it. He doesn't sit beside it, which he's done before on TV. He doesn't even mention he was on The Tonight Show. He makes it all about Johnny.

    • @TheFogLakeshore
      @TheFogLakeshore 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Johnny was national unity, Jay mentioned the 25 million viewers he'd get. You can see the ritual in the beginning of Poltergeist, a scene that doesn't have meaning anymore. The ritual is: You watch the local nightly news at 11 PM. Then you switch over to NBC at 11:30. The Tonight Show runs for an hour, until 12:30 AM. Then they play the National Anthem, and then.... NOTHING. NOTHING IS ON TV. They shut the transmitters off, and there is snow. The ending of that ritual is one of the most significant events in American history. I don't think you can over-estimate the importance of that change. TV..... USED TO END! There was no TV between 12:35 AM and 5:30 AM in most of the US. Sure, major cities might have had all-night TV but for the majority of us with 3, maybe 4 channels if you had PBS on UHF, there was no TV all night. You had to read a book, listen to the radio, or, you know, talk to people and interact with them! Imagine that!

      Not quite the Bentley or Duesenberg that a millionaire would own, but this was the 1939 equivalent of maybe a 5-series BMW, or mid-range Audi, today- Not super-rare or super-pricey, but not an average worker or farmer's car either.

    I'm 42, so I rememeber the last about 6 years Carson was on the air before he retired and you took over. It's hard for people under 30 to comprehend how big Johnny was. Kids might remember you and Letterman but before that it was Carson and that was IT. Letterman was sort of an afterthought till he went to CBS and you and him kinda got head to head. The thing I remember about Carson (and you as well) is that he never got one sided politically. He'd make fun of both sides of the aisle equally. As it should be. The guys on now are so biased it's nausiating. I haven't watched any latenight since you retired.

    Jay talks about the smell of the fabric. Mohair being the fabric of choice for that time period, did age and carry a distinct oder, but think about the smell cigarettes added to that! 1000s of cigarettes were smoked in the car and the smoke, with all of its disgusting smell went right into the fabric, not to mention the windows and all of the hard surfaces inside the car. Everyone, I mean everyone smoked! It would be impossible to find a vintage car that was smoke free! Luckily over time the oder dissipates to a level that's not too bad. I agree with the other comments that this is one of the best cars Jay has done on the show!!! It is a beautiful car, probably ahead of its time. With what Jay let us know about him and Johnny, it's no wonder he replaced Johnny and they were very close friends! To be given such a gift was the ultimate tribute to a friendship! • @TheFogLakeshore
      @TheFogLakeshore 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DD-ze7qm It's not a myth, but the Allies with surplus vehicles destroyed them for a variety of reasons, not least of which was that people needed to work. There are entire lagoons in the South Pacific filled to the brim with 2 1/2 trucks, tanks, and jeeps. They just shoved them over the side. At Noumea in New Caldeonia, they had a company of motor techs who spent weeks siphoning all of the gas out of the vehicles, putting bricks on the gas pedals or fixing the throttles forward, start em up, put em in gear, and letting them drive themselves into the ocean. There were Dive companies established around those graveyards (which are now mostly about the reefs that grew on the vehicles in the last 80 years). In Britain they disassembled entire acres of trucks and jeeps, taking all of the heads off the motors and driving them to another County where they'd dump them, then taking the rear axles back with them, just so that you couldn't easily re-assemble the vehicles. Because if they hadn't done that, we would have gone back to the Depression because no one would have made cars. The Depression never really ended due to social programs, it was the War and the national credit which put people back to work. That was before the Consumer Economy began, when all economies were mainly about Manufacturing. That's what Mad Men and Madison avenue is about, hawking consumer items for the new Consumer Economy which is now the dominant form of commerce. That didn't exist back then so they destroyed as many vehicles as they could. The only reason they didn't go to the scrap heap is because the mining, steel-making, and scrap industry was wayyyyy over-utilized for the demands of a post-war economy. Scrap was going dirt-cheap, they shut down mines and steel plants... Britain was bankrupt and had to scrap all her old warships for pennies on the dollar. The US just put all of their HUGE fleet into mothballs to wait for better scrap prices or re-activation, which is what we did with a lot of the Cruisers and DDs, and Battleships and Carriers. It's part of the reason the ship-building industry took a dive, we made over a THOUSAND Liberty and Victory cargo ships, the ocean was crawling with an infestation of cargo ships built during WWII, now there almost none left. But anyway to get an actual surplus Jeep was somewhat common back then, but a lot less common than what you might think. They shoved F6F Hellcats and F4U Corsairs over the side of Carriers steaming at flank speed to San Francisco and Seattle to have bunks installed inside to bring the boys home in Operation Magic Carpet. People just wanted to come home, shove it over the side instead of fly them off, why waste the gas and time? The big Carriers and Battleships were stuffed to the gills with GIs, they'd get one maybe two trips out of them, and then straight to mothballs. That's crazy but it happened. The US did not establish a Military Empire after WWII when they easily could have (who would oppose us? We had nuclear weapons and over 50% of the world's manufacturing power), mainly because everyone wanted to get home by Christmas.

In 1970, I was in high school working at the El Cordova Garage on weekends cleaning up (moping the floors with gasoline and then spreading wood chips to soak up the gasoline and grease.) I remember the boss telling a story about a woman who came in with her car running rough. Bob the owner tuned it up and replaced the spark plugs, which were all carboned up. The woman came back a day or so later and said the car was running rough again. Bob checked the plugs and they were carboned up again. He cleaned them and set it up again so it was running right. A couple days later she came back and was furious that she was still having trouble. He looked inside the car and there was the choke pulled out and her purse hanging on it. He called her on it and said you can't do that. She snapped right back "well where am I suppose to hang my purse." Bob just shook his head and told her not to come back.

      If you're such a big fan, you should consider using the correct spelling of his name.

      @@mikecee3058 All that matters to me is that Anupam shared his kind sentiment. I am a big "Jonny" Carson fan too and if you don't like the way somebody spells that, well, that's a 'you' problem, because everybody who speaks English on the planet Earth knows what Anupam meant. Even you did. I bet you couldn't ask for a glass of water in Anupam's home town. And I also bet they'd try to understand you and help you out. Criticism can be "helpful". It can also be "mean spirited". Mike, take some constructive criticism here: you're doing nobody any credit by putting a person down like that.

      @@bbb462cid I also didn't point out the fact that he incorrectly spelled 'big', nor did I point out the rest of his grammar errors. If he claims to be "the boss", then he should at least know how to spell. Now, go untwist your panties and have a nice day.

    hey Jay, when it comes to calling people by their proper names, i totally get it. i had a marine biology teacher in high school whose last name was Nishimura. everyone else always called him " Nish " but to me, that sounded like a bit of an insult ( especially since he was really short ) so, i always called him by his full last name of Nishimura because i felt that was the most respectful thing to do

      I agree with you.
      I assume your teacher was Japanese American from his name.
      Here in Japan, calling someones last name with his title is paying respect to him.

    jay's been quarantined at the garage so long he's run out of clean shirts. For the love of all that's holy, can't someone bring the poor man some fresh denim? LOL

      Most mechanics smell a bit gamey, I wouldn't trust any mechanic or body man that smelled like Aqua Velva.

    Just a note to those who might have interest, the headlamps and bezel on the car Jay shows is not the original configuration. Originally, from the factory, the thirty nine Chryslers had a tear drop shaped glass that covered a tear shaped bezel that was highly polished for reflectivity.
    The headlight was a small old style lamp that shone from behind the glass.

    I love these Jay Leno self-produced Editions. He's more like your neighbor over the fence one on one. The other ones are awesome too, but these are my favorites.

    Johnny Carson was one of those figures when I was growing up in the early 1960's that you almost felt was part of your family. I remember watching his daytime show "Who Do You Trust" with my mom before I was old enough to go to school and then latter when he started on the "Tonight Show" after Jack Parr left he already had an audience and his humor was usually topical and biting but not as far left of field like the Smothers Brothers to get him in trouble. And yes I recognised the car from the Carson Special even before you told us what it was.

      Carson got in trouble a couple of times...he made a few too many references to cocaine in his monologues...the Network told him to back off...he also made too many fat jokes about Raymond burr, who complained seriously about it...and also, he made sarcastic little asides about Wayne Newton being too effeminate (but I agree with that), and he had to back off of that too!

    I remember watching that Johnny Carson goes home special in 1982, I was 12. I'll admit I got a little misty eyed seeing that Chrysler again. I grew up about an hour SW of Norfolk, so this really hits home. Thanks for doing a show on it, Jay.
