Can relate to family being all good and care-free/ish to later find things change. This song ( and this comment) captured the feeling of strength I need to get back in my feet right now, cheers to you.
Best version EVER! Migulay Boat Song by Coda Chorus: Heel y'ho boys / let her go boys Heave her head round / into the weather Heel y'ho boys / let her go boys Sailing homeward / to Mingulay! What care we though/ white the Minch is? What care we boys/ the windy weather When we know that/ every inch is closer homeward / to Mingulay? Chorus Wives are waiting / by the pier heads, Gazing seaward / from the heather. heave her head round / and we'll anchor Ere the sun sets / on Mingulay! Chorus
Gorgeous, what a performance! I've been looking for this for years. I heard the song in my childhood and it's been lodged somewhere at the back of my mind ever since. Thank you for sharing!
Imagine the day when this rang out over a glass ocean on a cool misty morning. To paraphrase a couple of famous pirates, The world isn't smaller than it used to be, there's just less in it.
I've just toured the youtube Mingulay versions. This is much the best. Why? Simply because you've recognized that this is a rowing song. It should be sung acappella, no instruments in the boat; by a small group, the crew, at a tempo akin to pulling on the oars. It is not the Oxford-Cambridge boat race folks...
'Sailing' homeward to Mingulay, Neil. And, 'heave her head round and let her go, boys' has me believing they're sailing. But take your point, the tempo would be about right for pulling her along.
This great song is not a shanty. A shanty is a sailor's work song, a rhythmic accompaniment to raising anchors on the capstan or hauling sails on halyards. This song was written by Hugh S. Roberton, a proud Scotsman in the 1930's. long after shanties were needed to control the movement of sailing ships. This is a great song (and well sung guys!), but please do your history; it's not a shanty.
What a stupid comment! The Blues has it's origins in the songs of Black Slaves, so does that mean that no more Blues can be written since slavery has been abolished? Or no more Madrigals because people don't sit around singing in parlours anymore? A Sea Shanty is a style/type of music, just because we are no longer sailing around in Tall Ships does not mean that a piece of music cannot be written shanty style. Great version guys and yes it is a shanty!
The 'Mingulay Boat Song' was written by Hugh S. Roberton, an interesting and talented man by any standards. That is beyond dispute. However, a sea shanty is a specific thing. Shanties were work songs, sailors sang them to co-ordinate their movements, not for the joy of it, shanties were a need. Many modern folk singers have adapted the words and tunes and even added musical instruments, which would not have been a feature on deck during a force 10 way back in 1800..and something. Hugh S. Roberton was not a seafarer. Hugh came from a privileged background, but was nonetheless a talented poet and wordsmith. Most of his output was fairly sentimental, in the kindest sense of that word; my favourite of his songs being' Westering Home'. By the 1930's the need for sea shanties had long disappeared, diesel engines did the work of sails, rudders and capstans. So OK Dave, I take on board the fact that modern songs and tunes can be written in the idiom of old folk songs (or blues). Crap! I've done a few myself! i have no problem with updating old classics or writing new stuff in the same genre. The point is though, The Mingulay Boat Song does not qualify on any musical or historical level, as a shanty. It's a great song, but it is categorically, not a shanty. Love and peace..
@@daweshorizon So basically you're a purist killjoy? Tell you what. Let's go on a boat together. I'll sing this song while I work. And when you tell me I can't sing it because it's not a shanty I'll just throw you overboard. Problem solved.
This makes my soul fly! It's so beautiful. Soul flying is the most I can say. Thank you.
Reminds me of the times i used to take long, cold, relaxing roadtrips with my family; a time where i didn't have problems and everything was good!

The melody reminds me a lot of the song "Will the Circle Be Unbroken", i wonder if there's some inspiration or overlap
