I must admit, the sound quality of this recording is top notch.
To me you can't even compare SU and JSU simply because they arrange and orchestrate songs way differently. Both of them bussing in they own way . (And this coming from a die hard Southern fan . You gotta understand that SU trombones play high as hell .. the baritones play in mello range mellows play in trumpet range and trumpets just all in the stratosphere... that's part of what makes them so great
but Southern be having bad tone tho... thats what makes JSU better
I couldn’t agree with you more on this. What SU lacks JSU has it whole heartedly, and where JSU lacks SU has that part of the game. To see them come together for 1 weekend would be something to die for. Against any two MEAC bands that’s would be epic!!!
@@chaibeatty5933 I disagree with you on this 1 and I’m a die hard JSU fan. I practically grew up 10 minutes away from JSU so that’s all I know! But SU is also my second favorite. Saying that SU has a very high quality in sound.

Overall, SU and TxSU, sound the best. Their harmonies are on point and they’re not pitchy. No one can TOUCH SU’s brass section. They’re the best and have been the best for decades. 🤷🏽♀️

For the past several years, I have been watching the Sonic Boom perform, not only do I enjoy watching the band and the J-settes, but I also love those drum majors. I am so proud of them. I am old school and a HBCU alumni. Who do I contact to donate funds to JSU? I am so impressed this year with the sound, showmanship, and the energy. I plan to attend the Honda Battle of the Bands in January 2019 with my daughter and a few of her bandmates, just to see JSU. Thank you to all the band directors for teaching these young men and ladies how to act like queens and kings. Thank God the directors are also very professional and not pouring wheaties all over the place. Just not a good look at all. Great job JSU and all the bands.

To be honest I was there I think the battle could have been way better then what it was in my opinion and I was there.Southern and Jackson state was the best but I ain't gone lie Texas Southern was trying make some noise small but wasn't bad at all but Southern to me had the whole stadium cutting up and it's just the truth tje whole stadium was singing and everything.jackson state sounded good too but Southern got that but it could've been a better battle on the real I was expecting more from the battle.
Crankfest was and has always been on SU's turf.... of course the home team is gonna get the most cheers... how do you think it would go if they were in Jackson or Houston.

Carlos Scott um JSU took 2017 crankfest with ease an they was the smallest band that year. 2016 southern barely even made it they slipped up a few times. An this year JSU just displayed they awesomeness yet again

SU hands down you can hear the mixture of talent and arrangement they aren't predominantly bass they incorporate ALL the instruments in a fine balance relative to their competition anyway here. Jsu is loud talented but the way SU plays allows for more complex arrangements. I don't know about technicality i wasn't trained but i can hear the difference. Everyone brought it but SU is on a different level. Even when complex arrangements are added its short SU goes on whole runs shifting from one complex note to the next and their sections can be hitting all different levels of a note low version mid version high version. SU won almost every round 1 or 2 weren't close the others were either very or fairly close.
Some of these battle of the bands you see nowadays are snorefests, but you could feel the energy through the screen on this one. Seems like the hypest Crankfest yet. Really would love to see Tennessee State come next year.
