If Punjab’s march towards desertification is to be stopped, the best way is to move the cultivation of wheat and paddy out to 50 lakh hectares of land in the Gangetic plains of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal, says Dr Sardara Singh Johl, one of the most prominent agricultural economists in India. The 93-year-old tells ThePrint's Urjita Bhardwaj & Samyak Pandey why Punjab has been in an agrarian crisis for years, and how the lives of its stressed farmers can be made easier.

Good work by The Print to shed light on the issues that really matter! No words for Sri SS Johl for his invaluable contribution🙏.
Every possible measure needs to be taken to resolve this multi faceted crisis.
Crop diversification and promoting our traditional grians, the Millets (especially Siridhanya by millet man Dr. Khadar Valli) is the need of the hour. Not only Millets require much less water/pesticide/fertilizer and are climate resilient, but also hold immense potential nutritionally, killing two birds with one stone. Also millets are already being distributed at PDS shops, we can increase it and reduce rice.
Its time we come out of vicious cycle of growing and eating just wheat and rice if we want to save both our health and the environment.
    Keep spreading awareness everyone.🙏

I am from Punjab and I totally agree, Because all this is based on facts & data. We cannot produce wheat & rice that no one needs and sell that to Govt. (taxpayers money). Which has no demand & eventually goes into bin.

Consecutive governments have failed miserably in providing access to credit for farmers, in ensuring R&D that could lead to diversification and prevent desertification, in ensuring that the small farmer gains bargaining power through a co-operative or a legal support price, but of course ignorant urban dwellers could not care less. They only care about forming uninformed opinions by watching content that suits their pre-conceived notions!

All the farmers are saying is guarantee MSP and after that any tom, dick and harry can buy from the farmers.MSP (Minimum support price) is what the farmers are asking not MRP (Maximum retail price). This article is trying to divert attention from the main issue of MSP.

      @s1 b3 @Joshua Pereira
Well said S1 b3, if you want to do what these goons want, you will end up with the following:
      1. A Statutory Commission to fix MSP for all 400+ agri commodities , including Adrak and Dhania! For this we must remove agriciulture must be made the exclusive domain of central laws. HOw many states will agree to it ? Is it wise to do ?
      2. Since MSP is cost+, and cost of cultivatiion differs from agro-climatic region to agro-climatic region. Adrak grown in Karnatka will have to have a different MSP than adrak in Maharashtra !
      3. What is the use of MSP if nobody buys it at this price . For example if you arrive at Adrak's MSP at Rs.250/kg in Karnataka and if nobody wants to buy it at that price then what will you do ? After all price is a price only of both buyer and seller agree on it. You have to ask the Govt to buy it. Here it will have to be the central govt. This means all 400+ will have to be bought by FCI like Adrak Dhania Corporation of India or Tomato Corporation of INdia!!
      4. As a natural corollory, the Statutory Commission will havfe to come with strict licensing for cultivation of crops across India to implement this policy and farmers cannot be allowed to exercise freedom to grow what they want.
      5. To implement this we need a special cadre of central police force in the lines of IPS called the Indian Agri Police Service ( IAgPs)!
      6. We have to raise a whole bureaucracy to run the Adrak Dhania corporations and Mirchi Tomato Corporations in the lines of IAS, call ot IAgS.
We will buy Dhania at Rs.25 bunch and waste 90% post-harvest and sell it at Rs5 a bunch, at the cost of the economy and eventually destroy our country

@s1 b3 17 lakhs is what the government will pay on procurement. They will sell it to the consumers and the excess can be exported. So the government will make a profit or at least cover the 17 lakh expense.60% of the economy is in rural India. If the farmers are poor the economy is going to fall.So if farmers are rich it’s only going to return back to the economy. It makes more economic sense to make 1000 farmers rich than 1 Ambani rich.

Excellent interview. Came to know many details many of which I wasn't aware. These needs to be circulated and given wide publicity. It appears that farm laws are helpful to Punjab more than any other states. Otherwise they sink into an abyss from which they can't come out. Land is as good as the soil that it has which in turn is as good as the water it holds. We also need to remember that changes towards desertification is an irreversible process.

It is a tragedy that we have created a political system which gives the most vicious nay sayers the front seat in vetoeing anything that is good for the country. BJP's intransigence during the Nuclear deal was as terrible as the Opposition's stand on farm reforms today. If we lose this opportunity to political blackmailers then it will be curtains for us as a nation . Dr. Johal is an collossal institution all by himself. If Punjabi farmers refuse to listen to him then it will be the state's funeral. I request Print should commission a book by the experts on the subject of Agriculture in India. That should be the gold standard text book on the subject.

Average land per person in India is 2 acres, and 2.5 in Punjab.
Growing food is what the earth is for, so why is the land not used more for each individual rather than commercialization of food? Kaliyuga is upon us, friends, and with this in mind, people of good brain substance need to cultivate their own food rather than depend on huge conglomeration farming, (import & export structure). One milk cow per family, planting many fruit trees, producing vegetables, grains, oils, nuts, and whatever is acceptable to the Supreme Lord to be taken as nutritious for body and soul.
Kṛṣṇa does not accept flesh of animals especially cow as His food. No, He accepts milk sweets, and kachoris, halvah, sandesh, rasgulla, subji, rice, puri, samosa, and all that with love.
No money is edible, by the way.

The way I see it, getting the reform in place is priority. If we can get a reform implemented on time, we can get amendments done to it at double the rate. But simply demanding repealment is downright criminal. Remember, the world is looking at your pace of reforms, this will decide investment.
And all else said, if I am not farming, I'm paying for the food and my taxes on time. I do not have the luxury of subsidies on water and electricity.
So it's time we start taking people off the pedestal of socialistic thought. The ordinary middle class who pays taxes on time and still does not get appreciated is no less than the farmer.

Well said Sir. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 Huge respect for you and your Work. 🙏🏽🙏🏽 This is the Tragedy of our Country we share our Knowledge to other countries and they Implement it and When we try to implement in Our country no one take it seriously. Ghar ki murgi Daal barabar 😔😔😔 lets hope and pray both People and government understand and find a middle way to solve this problem. I think he should be given a chance to present in farmer and government talk so he can teach both of them that instead of fighting we can find a middle way to solve the problem of Punjab & Haryana farmers. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
