Ah, I have taken boats from Vauban out to Greece … new Jeanneau that come from La Rochelle by truck, then get fitted out on the hard at Port Vauban, put in the water, commissioned and then sailed out to Greece. All a big quieter early in the season though!
You were on a laid line on the E5 berth? So you needed to motor back, get the windward stern line on, motor forward to lay again the upwind boat while you got the laid line up and on a bow cleat? Then motor back against it and get the second stern line ashore and shorten the windward line to all square-up? Nice job! That’s when you appreciate having four crew 😂

Thanks Iain. Yes we had to be smart on that windward stern line but Kate got it on nicely. Always had the bailout option of dropping, well gendered, onto the leeward boat if it went wrong. Would have then warped ourselves back into the correct spot. But yes we enjoyed Vauban, nice marina and town 😍⛵️

That's a good tip about using the radar to identify yachts dragging down onto you. It's amazing how many people think they can just chuck the anchor over the side then go ashore/bed/both no matter what the weather. I met a clown at Lundy last year who put down barely enough for the anchor to reach bottom at high tide. I love the bit about the speed, however; how many times have we wanted to say something just like that?!?

Oh the times we’ve watched boats anchoring whilst silently shouting MORE CHAIN! (Amongst other things!) 😂 We have regularly sat on deck, with a cold one 🍺, to watch anchoring shenanigans in busy places. It can be entertaining but actually our primary purpose is making sure no one drops anchor in a dangerous position for us. And yes the radio comment about speed was brilliant and somehow made more hilarious by a broad geordie accent in the south of France 😂😂

That was a lot of wind 😮 What’s the anchor type? Rocna-like, but not a Rocna. Depth and scope? Nice to have the radar and repeater to give you a nicer (and more accurate) way to check no one was drifting toward you … or that you were dragging. I’ve had some fun times in strong Meltemi, even with both anchors laid!

It is a 30kg Mantus anchor with 10mm chain. I think the depth was around 6 metres and with that wind I imagine we were on 6:1 scope on all chain so probably had 40 metres out. The anchor has always been awesome even in nearly 50 kts in Ria Cedeira on our way south…always slept well (with an anchor alarm of course!)

Thanks, useful @@FollowIntrepidBear. Yep, I'd be on 6 or 7:1 in those conditions, and in some Meltemi I've been on even greater scope and moved ... which shows how much better your Mantus is vs Delta pattern (not real thing!) in these conditions. 'Mantus' duly logged 🙂

There are always impatient power boaters, as a former on don't get it, always best to be patient. Best looking fort, looks like it could take a good shelling. Ha ha, I expected something spicy in sandwich, ha ha

Cheers Jim. Yes I’m also a former (and one day maybe future!) motor boater and always advocate patience. Sadly not all do though. It was a seriously solid fort for sure and I think my sandwich was chicken mayo so nothing spicy there it was just the spicy language on the radio! I don’t know how much you know about British regional accents but this guy had a very strong geordie (Newcastle) accent which somehow made it all the more amusing 😂😂

Yours has to be the strangest Union flag (2:16) in the upper canton of your ensign, that I have ever seen?

The things you spot David! 😂😂 It doesn’t look that strange to me. Poor ole Florence spent a season with one that had no red cross in the union flag. I thought there was some significance but it was simply a manufacturing error by Amazon’s suppliers! 😬😂🇬🇧
