we do, the sub used in the video is a separate SRT file from the internet for the purpose of editing the video. theres nothing i can do about the quality of this sub as thats all there is available. but we watch it on Netflix without CC sub.
I'll be honest. On the surface, the clear mistranslation was a bit cringe. But after doing a deeper dive into the oppa/old man fiasco from episode 4, I'm more sympathetic to the translators. I think they were trying to capture the nuanced subtext rather than doing a direct word-for-word translation. Yes, ajuma is not grandma. It's a term for a middle aged woman. And while it's a perfectly serviceable word and Mi-nyeo is absolutely an ajuma, it's fallen a bit into disuse in favor of more flattering, non-age-specific forms of address. In professional establishments or department stores, middle-aged female customers are no longer addressed as ajumas so as not to potentially alienate them. And on the other end, older servers and vendors are being addressed as eemo (auntie) as opposed to ajuma. It's not that it's necessarily rude, but the trend is to go towards more considerate alternatives. That said, what the translators were likely trying to convey was the INTENT they saw in Gi-hun's choice of using that word. Coming on the heels of her insult to Ali, Gi-hun addressed her as ajumunie (a more honorific form of ajuma). She responds by shooting daggers. What the translators heard in that exchange (right or wrong) was Gi-hun throwing subtle, passive-aggressive, age-related shade at her. The translators, I believe, were trying to accommodate that and explain away Mi-nyeo's reaction. Apparently, they went with OVERT age shade in the form of "grandma." My guess is that they were trying to make it clear that Gi-hun was jabbing her with an age dig. I'm not saying that "grandma" is the best choice, but the question is this: How would you have translated "ajumunie" in that context? "Middle-aged woman""? Obviously, that doesn't work. "Ma'am"? Not enough of a dig. "Old lady"? Maybe. Another alternative is to use a more innocuous word (like "miss" or ma'am") and hope viewers aren't curious about her reaction. I'm just saying, there often is no perfect fit from one language to another. But if Western viewers laughed that he took an age dig at her and that she took offense at it, then in a way, the translation was effectively accurate.

' Gae sori hajima' which means 'Stop saying bullshit' ... and CC sub put words 'there's no way i'll do that' she also said 'are you crazy?' in original line.. they omitted again.. this is just tip of iceburg..i'm not just saying.. like oppa or ajuma .. those interpretaipn of different by context. They just even changed not just word by word.. totaly different scentances some time...if you do that with foriegn language... sometimes if the parts try to convay humors or other important emotional parts.. it can create misunderstanding .. people will be like 'what??'...... wait..i don't get it.. like that..and chek the Ali and Minyeo's conversation part..it was definitly comic parts 100% director wanted make audience laugh...alie said to her -- 'you screamed BULL SHIT !! then she asked him back.. what kind of bull shit are you talking about right now... and Ali mimik her screaming part 'STOP SAYING BULLSHIT ARE YOU NUT(or crazy)'... and check the CC parts... again they put..totaly deffernt concept of scentances...... you will see what I'm saying.. with that parts i've watched two different reaction videos.. one with CC they didn't even noticed what happen.. and the other reactor with normal sub.. they got the comic and laughed out loud together....
Just FYI I looked it up earlier. There was a real strike in 2009 SsangYong Motors that ended with a brutal police assault that matches the story here. Sad stuff if you read up on it.
I think if the guard shot the doc, it would be suspicious to the managers and they would investigate. A knife however could be blamed on another player.
As a Korean, I'd like to share the subtle difference between the way Ali and other Korean participants talk, which seems to have been lost in translation. It's unfortunate since it plays an important role of revealing the problem of rampant racism in our society which many Korean people are either not aware of, or even actively denying of its existence. Ali refers everyone else as "Sir" and use honorifics when speaking with them while everyone else talks to Ali in a way it'd be unacceptable unless it's to one's close friends or someone much younger. Even though the practice isn't as prevalent as the show depicts, it's still pretty common and a lot of people regard foreign workers from South Asian countries with a sense of racial superiority here. It's one of the ugly faces of Korean society, aside from such cut-throat competitive culture that pervades it, which I believe the director wanted to depict with his show.
I'm not sure I agree with this. While Mi-nyeo is clearly hurling retaliatory xenophobic digs at him, I don't think the rest of the squad is giving him that treatment. I think it has to do with the fact that they know he's much younger they are and they can hear that his level of Korean is basic. Obviously, the Ali character is meant to be overly effusive with honorifics, even going as far as to address them with a term generally reserved for presidents of companies (because he doesn't know better). But I think that's all it is. Their age, his basic level of communication, and a familial kinship they already feel with him.

And if age difference could be a factor, it only matters like when a man in his 60s talking to a teenager, which is clearly not the case between Ali and other participants. It'd be clearer if you remember how Ali befriends Sangwoo in ep 2. They were not close to each other before that scene and while Ali bowing deeply to Sangwoo and speaking with honorifics, Sangwoo did none of that but simply treated him like he was someone inferior in status or rank. Even if Sangwoo was more than 20 years senior, such a behaviour wouldn't be considered acceptable if Ali was another native Korean. When you think of how the writer/director have depicted Ali's character - being maltreated as a foreign worker and all that, and so on - on top of that, I think it should be obvious the difference in the manners of speaking between Ali an others would be an intentional device to shed light on the hidden racial problem on Korean society.

But I still don't see the interactions you've listed as examples of that. Per your reference, I took another look at the episode 2 scene and I don't see what you've described. Sang-woo spoke to Ali the whole time "honorifically" adding a "yo" at the end of every sentence. Yes, he acted aloof and didn't reciprocate Ali's bows. But I don't see that as racism. And regarding his aloofness, consider where this character is in his arc. He's in a world of trouble in this outside world. He was reminded of it again when his phone was recharged. He had just been dumped blindfolded and naked on the side of some road. And while Ali was happy to be back, Sang-woo voted to stay on that island for a chance at improving his lot in the real world . He was in no mood for any social interaction. And all things considered, he was rather nice to Ali. Sure, when he took back his phone and gave Ali money, he did so with one hand. But that's not necessarily rude, especially for someone as cosmopolitan as Sang-woo. He probably knew that that action was a Korean thing and non-Koreans don't expect it. For example, Sang-woo is the type of person who'd bow upon meeting a fellow Korean but extend a hand upon meeting a foreigner. And not out of racism. He'd do it because he's smart enough to know the difference. As for the general "respect" thing, I think Korean people do it reflexively and more because such actions are socialized norms. I don't think it's done out of actual respect. And the reason they do it more towards fellow Koreans is not because they like or respect the person they're interacting with. It's because they're dealing with someone who knows the social protocol. And a slight misstep could be considered a belligerent act.

It was because the reaction video I watched the scene only showed the part where Sangwoo answered the question without an honorific (i.e. "여의도" instead of "여의도(에)요"). That being said, I still maintain my position that Ali's character definitely shows intentional touch from the director/writer to emphasize that problem. I don't know if you are familiar with the comic sketch once popular in Korea, involving an abused foreign worker who talks things like "사장님 나빠요". Ali is pretty much of the same streotype as that character, from the way he always addresses other men as "사장님" or the exaggerated deep bow he does to them, and so on. Those kind of things are not a part of what you described as "reflective" etiquette of ordinary Korean people. It's not something you see often between peers among native Koreans but something you may expect when you imagine the mannerisms of a stereotypical dark skinned foreign worker in this country. To be clear, I'm not saying Sangwoo or any other participants harbour positive racial hatred against Ali. They just find it "normal" to treat Ali as someone who's below their status and it's probably how Ali got his extremely subservient attitutes towards other Korean people. If you are still not convinced that it was an intentional touch, I'd suggest to try imagining Ali as a white American or European man. I've lived in Korea for more than 40 years but never once have I seen a white man depicted as having similar mannerisms as Ali on any media, while I've seen countless instances where they are used to depict a streotypical abused foreign worker from a South Asian country.

I was only addressing how Ali was treated, not how he behaved or how he was written. IMO, he was an exaggerated character, written to be extra nice and respectful (and demonstrably so). They are interesting to follow because they look at it from a Korean viewpoint. Not all the questions raised in the first season of this show get answered. That is probably intentional so they can answer them in later seasons. I hope season 2 isn't going to take 2 years or more to show up on Netflix like many of the series do.
