    btw; we watched this on Netflix using regular, correct subtitles, but when putting the video together we had to look for a useable SRT file to overlay on top, and the only ones available were CC subs.

    During this episode you can hear Ali call Sang-Woo "Hyung" which means "older brother." It is used to refer to one's actual older brother, or to an older male friend you deeply trust. Ali trusted Sang-Woo like a brother up until the very end.

      This. This whole thing is why i just can’t be too mad at sangwoo:/ he had to do what he had to do to win. Only ones who are actually evil in this scenario are the vip’s, not the players no matter how dirty their tactics might be.

    The old man wasn't testing GH. From the onset, he had wanted GH to win. Sadly, the luck was against GH in this game of chance.
    The old man had to fake dementia so that GH won't lose his last marble. Since luck wasn't on GH side, the old man had to fake dementia all the way.
    Remember the old man saying that the marble was so pretty. That was probably the marble that he kept in his pocket instead of the pouch.

      @@ssicamon1927Because the bad guy didn't have to cheat, my dear. That doesn't make him Mother Teresa. He would cheat if he had to, in fact, he used a dirty trick to change the game early on, when he saw that he would lose if the game was based only on luck. Ironically, it was luck that helped him in the end. The question is, if good-hearted people had to do dishonest things to survive, imagine what a bad guy would do? Some questions raised here are well founded, others are pure nonsense..

      @backinmydaycartoons7957 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@patriciarp9686 You're missing the point the original comment was trying to make i think. I assume they were just noting how interesting a writing choice it was to have every other character win by different means individually, but ultimately the one that's most implicitly a bad person is the one that won fair and square. Perhaps the writers were trying to hint as some sort of subconscious evil and willingness to do anything to survive within the rest of the characters, and in contrast some humanising traits of the bad guy. It's up for interpretation but i think its interesting to look at it that way rather than view it under a very simple and one-minded lens.

    Sang-woo's turn has been foreshadowed throughout the show. Most important to this episode is that he lies to Ali when they were standing watch at night, implying that Ali's situation, a wife and child, is similar to his when we know that's not the case. Ali might not have been so easily swayed if he knew Sang-woo didn't have as much to play for as he did.

    I know yall watched this a year ago and I am REALLY enjoying watching and you two are two of my favorite reactors so I say this with a friendly tone, just commenting my bit into the conversation. Please no one read this as a criticism. I feel like yall were a little harsh on our main character since the beginning. He has a gambling addiction which is an ADDICTION, that was caused by trauma, abuse and poverty. Yes, you want him to do better and he made bad choices. He could have done better but addiction is an illness, even gambling addictions. in an earlier showing it was said he put himself there. He didn't. He had the system stacked against him which caused his downfall, from the abuse he faced from his previous employment and the system that forced him there, from the trauma he endured, to the poverty causing him to watch people he loved suffer, to the lack of adequate mental health care and so much more. He went back in out of desperation for his family. He stayed loyal to the old man the entire game, including partnering with him knowing full well that if it was any feat of mind or body where they were working together, he would increase his risk of death. He was a very good guy throughout all of this. It's dark but him trying to trick the old guy is different imo from Sang-woo's actions because of the circumstances. Sang-woo tricked a young man with a vulnerable family by exploiting his trust and his vulnerable status as someone with a cultural barrier and even slight language barrier. Its way different, imo, than tricking an old man, who's lived his life, who's kids are grown, who is barely aware of his surroundings and is already dying. But SPOILERS AHEAD FOR ANYONE WHO HASN"T FINISHED THE SHOW. Seriously stop reading if you haven't finished. The old guy, anyone who's finished the show is aware now of his character but even at this point in the show, I don't understand why it was so hard to see him for the psychopath he was. Having a brain tumor and having nothing left to lose doesn't make you have fun while people around you are getting murdered. In episode one, not only was he not in shock by the games deadly consequences like the rest, he was smiling! he was having a grand old time as people were shot down around and yet everyone watching seems to ignore that. they write it off as him not having anything to lose but that doesn't explain the sheer joy in his face as he marched across that field. I didn't trust him from the start because of that little detail and I don't understand why that didn't set off massive red flags on this old man's character because of it. At first I thought that maybe he had won in the past several times, was already rich and just found it fun so went back in repeatedly which would have still been sick but possibly could be a commentary on how the games rob your humanity. But after he voted to go home even though he clearly had so much fun, I knew he was involved in the actual set it. It had already been clear that the group volunteering to be a part of the games was important. He had so much fun in the first game and he had the tumor, it didn't make sense for him to vote to leave unless he was concerned about the fairness of the games which made the most sense if worked for the games somehow. Considering his age and condition, I thought it was pretty clear from that point on he was one of the game's designers playing for kicks and giggles in his old age.

    I very much appreciate your reactions and analyses of this episode. This show really opens up some deep philosophical debates. My only qualm with the episode (and series, really) is that the set-up in the first few episodes leaves us realizing who will live and die (or, really, make it to the end or near-end). If I would remake the show, I would have introduced some of the other characters in the first episodes too. In fact, I'd probably like to see an episode like the first for multiple characters BEFORE we see what happens in the Red Light, Green Light game. This would leave us somewhat less certain with who lives and dies.

    Let's look from SW perspective. He is a "genius" so he chose the best partner. One with strength to complement his wit.
    Of course, he has no qualm with playing against Ali because SW was there for the money. Unlike Ali who owed pittance, SW owed an incredibly huge debt which only the prize of this Squid Game can resolve.
    SW thought he could win against Ali easily. Unfortunately, luck wasn't on his side.
    When he made his last wager, he made sure he still has one marble left to survive - win or lose that wager.
    SW knew he had to do something when he lost his wager. It was Ali's turn to wager and he only had a marble left. SW knew 100% that he would lose and die on the spot.
    Although he knew Ali did not cheat, he had to accuse him of doing so, so as to change the focus from betting to an accusation. To create a commotion (distraction). Thereafter he pleaded with Ali while planning on what he should do next.
    SW knew that Ali will be tempted to follow whatever plan he devised if he provide these two carrots:
    1. That he will let Ali have his last marble and,
    2. Dangle the fact that they can still be a team and keep the promise of getting out together.
    Of course, SW probably had a few other contingency plans if Ali did not agree. If the old man can think of a "my everything for your everything bet", I am sure SW was smart enough as well if it had to go to the wire.
    In the meantime, SW started surreptitiously putting large pebbles into his marble pouch.
    When he managed to get Ali to pass him the pouch, he covered Ali's pouch with his jacket. In the meantime, he made a pouch bag to securely keep the marbles.
    While going below to take Ali's pouch from beneath his jacket, he actually took his pouch from his jacket pocket.
    SW knew he cannot claim that the 19 marbles was his as he didn't win the marbles. Ali would dispute that and the marbles will be returned to Ali.
    SW plan was to be away from Ali when he handed in the 20 marbles. No dispute and no violence.

      I would say it comes down to what kind of character you have, and how selfish you are. We're all going to die anyway, and that day is going to come sooner than any of us would expect or prefer when we're still young. Before you know it you'll be laying on your death bed wondering where all those years went. I don't think the guy who swapped out the rocks is wicked. He's good by nature but being forced to go against that nature for the good of his family. Similar to the main character, but without the ols man to teach him a lesson.

    • @foilhattiest1
      @foilhattiest1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a really hard time seeing him as being particularly good. Sure he gave Ali some bus money which was kind but he's also only in this position because he chose to put his mothers house and shop and everything they own on the line as a gamble to make more money. Nobodys lives were in danger back then, he did that out of pure selfish greed with absolutely no care for the good of his family. OK if he wanted to risk his own things, but gambling with his mothers life and livelihood that way is not the actions of a good natured man in my opinion.

    • @foilhattiest1
      @foilhattiest1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jaypee9575 Are you seriously saying that stealing money from your clients and gambling it away on high risk investments while at the same time also throwing your mothers home and livelihood into the same gamble is something you just do if you're a "normal guy with a normal moral compass"?

    • @foilhattiest1
      @foilhattiest1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jaypee9575 Well, it's interesting how people see things differently, I on the other hand see a HUGE difference between Sang-Woos and Gi-Huns betrayals - mainly in that Sang-Woo thought up his little plan himself to purposely betray his friend in a very cold and calculated way that took a lot of steps to execute, whereas Gi-Hun seemed to have already accepted defeat when his solution was thrown at him like a last life line by another person. Also I feel the remorse they both showed while executing their betrayal both during and after was vastly different in the two characters as well.
      Sure if you look at everything in only black or white, they're both guilty of a betrayal, but reality and especially human behaviour is often a lot more nuanced than that imho, and that's probably why people see a difference in their actions. It's not that one is entirely bad and the other is entirely good, but more that they are at different points along a grey scale.

    • @foilhattiest1
      @foilhattiest1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      People have different moral standards and levels they find it unacceptable to drop down to. I'm no more in the mood to die for someone just because they're nice than anybody else is, but I also know I would never cheat and stab a good man and father in the back like that if his life and family depended on it just to save my own skin. Of course I prefer to keep living but that would be an unacceptable choice for me to want to live with for the rest of my life, it's just not the kind of person I want to be, and that I also refuse to be, no matter the cost.

      Anyway I was mostly reacting to the "just wouldn't happen" statement, because it definitely would in many cases. History is full of martyrs and real life Ji-Yeongs who sacrificed themselves so others could live on, not 100% of humanity is entirely selfish and there are definitely a whole lot of people out there who would rather give up their life for someone else than win at any cost by Sang-Woos methods.

    • @babybenD
      @babybenD 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yeah I don't think that would work either. I think it's more like, if 1 partner gets all 20, they get to live. Otherwise, both die. That's why even though we saw 38 people (19 pairs) enter the 4th game, only 15 people came out (16 total for the 5th game, including Han Min-Yeo). So I think we can infer that for 4 out of the 19 pairs, at the end of the 30 minutes, neither partner had all 20 (they were presumably still playing), so both partners got eliminated.
