The old man really said, "I was bored being mega rich bro, so I gathered my other bored rich friends and created a death game with the lowest people of society. It was fun though, but I'm about to die so cya"
The Purge and Hostel also did similar concepts of "the rich using the poor as death fodder for their entertainment" but Squid Game is definitely the best executed version of that concept (that I have watched). I do agree with some that the whole glass shatter into a fatal injury was a cheap plot point to remove a MC but not a big enough negative to ruin the positives that the show brought.
Not flexing or anything but I felt guilty watching the show because family is rich lol but not super rich like untouchables like billionaires 😬 I always think billionaires are different breed evil 🤣🤣🤣
When Gi-hun just laid there with his mother, that shit almost broke me. He became such a shell of a human being after the games that he was almost numb to death.
Same. He witnessed so many deaths and experiences so much grief that he became numb to his dead mother and didn't have the energy to cry out or anything
@@xdiaxan Emotionally drained indeed and remember when it comes to death, it isn't the ones who enjoy it you should worry about it's the ones who are numb to it that are the most dangerous.
The main characters all died according to how they escaped their situations in episode 2. So poetic. For Gi, i think he swore on his mom’s life and she died in the end. Superb series!
No one realized that Gi-hun was predicted/chosen to win from the beginning. The total cash prize was always going to be 456 Billion Won... Gi-hun's number is.....
@@123newjersey3 Or he was picked last..... so he gets the last number. There were many different factors that allowed gi hun to win, ali catching him in red light green light, him finding a different way to solve the honeycomb game, sangwoos insane last second plan for tug of war, also the order for the glass floor. Idk man pretty ur just overthinking it and its just a coincidence.
@@123newjersey3 2 things, the total prize money is 45.6 billion (100 million per player), and he wasn’t chosen it was just that he was the last player brought in
The thing that choked me up even after the series was the director's commentary on the moment with Gi-hun and his mother. Usually, seeing your mother on the floor like that would evoke a lot of emotion, crying and screaming. Gi-hun was so emotionally drained from all the events of the game, he had none of that left over. All he could do was lie down next to his mother the way he did. Freaking gutting. (and yes, can't wait for season 2, no way they won't do one after the success)
I actually really like his last decision, i probably wouldn't do it. But it's pretty in character for him, he got survivor's remorse and he is genuinely a man who does good without thinking about the future, it's also really cool how, even tough he's a good person, he's not a good father. The money can't change that, his decisions can.
Yeah exactly. I understand people being frustrated with Gihun's decision on a personal level, but him turning around in order to at least attempt to stop the games is very much in-character in terms of writing. And it's not like he's "abandoning" his daughter in a shitty situation, as some people are kind of claiming him to be doing. He knows his daughter is safe and has a stable life in the US with her mother and her stepfather. Gihun just can't let himself pursue his own happiness while knowing that there are hundreds of people about to die. And lastly, compassion for those about to enter the game and die isn't his only motivation. Revenge is his other motivation as well. He even says "I can't forgive you" on the phone. So even if some people hate Gihun's final decision, it makes perfect sense why he chose to not board the plane story-wise and character-wise.
Yeah and most people forgot about the last bet the old man made with him. Will anyone try to help the drunk on the street? Does he still believe in the goodness of people? Yes he could just live his life in peace but his character cannot allow other innocent people to fall victim to the games.
Yeah it is in character for him. But i hate that it's also in character for him to be impulsive with that decision, no thinking, he will go against the organizations, with the beacon he got as an haircut, with less money to do the job.
Exactly. Completely in line with that detail from an early episode where he chose to save one of his coworkers during that strike protest instead of go to his daughter's birth
The director said he actually added Gi-hun's line about having money in that scene as an ad-lib. Just hearing the number of small things that were improvised or added to the script and made scenes better was wild.
I just wanna say how I absolutely love the part when gihun and sangwoo were facing together and they were deciding who will be offense and defense through coin toss. Throughout the whole series, we saw how indecisive gihun was in his decisions. He always second guess his choices and that usually put him in tight situations. But in this scene, he was so filled with anger towards what sangwoo did and for the first time, we saw him decide without second guessing and just straight up pick his choice. Also, the way he chose triangle was a very nice call back on the honeycomb game where sangwoo let gihun picked the umbrella one instead of the triangle despite having an idea that it was a bad choice.
Excellent point. I completely agree with u. We can definitely feel Gi-Hun's rage at that very moment. In the actual game, he even forgot that he can simply go to the circle to win it.
The triangle was symbolic in more than one way, it was the offensive, weaponized symbol in general. The triangle masks were the soldier ants with firearms, the choice Sangwoo made to betray his team picking the triangle Dalgona in the 2nd game was also offensive, the dinner table after the fifth game was shaped like a triangle and they handed them knives as weapons & it all resulted in Gihun picking triangle side on the coin flip & choosing offense in the squid game when the coin landed with triangle face up.
@@mantaren and also the triangle button on games is usually a heavy attack and does the most damage out of the four buttons since circle is for dodging, x to jump and square for light punch lmao
Anybody who thinks the last decision at the airport makes no sense, has not been paying attention to the show at all. It’s shown time and time again that Gi-Hun always rushes to help those in need in a time of crisis. Sure, at the start of the show he was a bit of a bum, but they literally explain how he chose to try and save his coworker at the strike for his work. He explained this point to his ex-wife and said that he can’t pass up an opportunity to help someone in need. Gi-Hun’s daughter isn’t going to be dying anytime soon, he can always go back to see her. But you can’t say the same for the people going through the Games.

It's still risky as hell, considering they likely know where his daughter lives and possibly might use that as a threat if he actually gets close to exposing them. But then again, that's very much in character for Gi-Hun.
This is why i don't like his character very much. He goes through life without plans. What is he going to do to stop the squid game? The guy isn't even that intelligent or influential enough to do anything. The only one in the game who can probably stop the game is sang woo, but he's gone. This doesn't mean i like sang woo btw.
@@swagman2001 When that old man pointed to the homeless man at the window, Gi-hun looked and saw a guy call the police for help, it shows that there are still good people in this world. FYI the director actually also wrote every episode himself, and in an interview he mentioned while he has no plans for a season 2 he would be open to it if he could get a writer team as he felt over exerted during production. This series was initially going to be a movie, and to add time he added the detective's sub-story. I'm glad the director was able to make this into a series.
i did feel like the decetives story was pointless in a sense... since he just gets shot on the island anyways.. and his photos dont get sent through. but at the same time i can seee him coming back in season 2 and maybe teaming up with our main character to defeat the game?
Well, the story did reach a conclusion of sorts, but I think we all would like to see it continue. I'd be really weary of where they might go next with it, though, because I've seen so many well packed seasons of a show fall apart after they add more story later.
@@PlanetHouston personally, i would like it if they allow the main character to play again. or maybe a better idea, would be squid games, but with a new cast of characters? also i think the squid game challenges should be changed for season 2 also.
It's still crazy to me how the main cast's deaths were already foreshadowed on the second episode: Saebyeok = threatened a man to slash his neck after finding they took her money then later got cut in the neck by Sangwoo. Ali = got betrayed and fooled by his boss that did not not give his income, got betrayed by Sangwoo with the marble game. Deoksu = falls on the bridge to escape, falls together with Minyeo in the Mirror Game Sangwoo = tries to kill himself in the bathroom, kills himself with a knife. Sangwoo= Suicide Someone explained it in an another reaction, drinking a type of cheap alcohol with that humidifier in warm water shuts down the body and is a clean and numb way to kill yourself, apparently popular in Sough Korea

Gi-hun, Sang-woo and that old man were easily the best characters in Squid Game.

I'm not saying that I'm cool with him not going to see/be with his daughter, but she's honestly probably living a good life regardless of if her dad comes or not. Yeah, I'm sure she loves her father and wants to see him (and vice versa), but some things may seem more important. Like stopping the rich and powerful from preying on the poor and helpless. I wouldn't say him turning around at the airport was smart or rational, but it's definitely within his character, I think. Especially after what he just experienced.
Thats what people don't seem to understand. This man was lost and purposeless before the Squid Game which showed him that he really wanted to live. Now he has a real mission in life. He needs to save others from making the same mistakes he made.
I wouldn't be surprised if the Front Man was ready to shoot that plane down too, this could honestly be the safer option (till he goes after Gi-hun's daughter or somethin)
I'd add that since he now knows they're still watching him. He doesn't want his daughters new life and exact location know to them. Side note: I think the step-dad has a role in this, as he somehow knew his money situation without hearing the conversation between Gi-Hun and his wife. While immediately following him out the door to give him a conveniently full envelop of cash. Plus the Frontman was always receiving calls; and it couldn't have been from Il-Nam as he was amongst the games.
Basically he has survivor’s guilt. He hasn’t spent any of the money, because it’s blood money (money from all the dead contestants), so he doesn’t want to use it. Even though I personally wouldn’t go back, he’s experienced and wants to stop the game (reason why he took the card from the guy)…Everyone died the way they left to go to the game (I’m a terrible explainer, but…: Ali: trust, Sangwoo: literal escape (basically pettiness), Minyeo: seduction and desirableness, Deoksu: karma, Saebyeok: sacrifice in a way, Jiyeong: I guess humbleness or nothing to lose, and Ilnam (he technically didn’t die in the game, but…): responsibility and good measure). Gihun also swore on his mom, so his mom dying was kinda ironic and I felt bad for them (as Saebyeok would say). He didn’t have any emotion in the first half of the episode, due to how much he’s experienced in the game(s) (all the deaths have shocked him in a way, that with his mom’s death he became numb). It’s understandable that people are upset with his decision, but it’s within his character. His daughter isn’t going anyway (at least we hope so…), but him at least attempting to stop the game (of course with Junho lol, because we know he isn’t dead👀) will help prevent the other 456 participants risk not NOT seeing their families again

@@jasoncarvalho588 I mean obviously they’ll intervene, but they wouldn’t kill her (threaten him with her, kidnap her maybe), since they’re way more likely to try to kill him first more (in the game or as he’s trying to intervene). Obviously he isn’t going to be able to stop the game with just Junho, they’ll obviously need more people (new seasons contestants, insiders (the workers) who don’t like working there, people on the outside that won the game earlier (but I doubt they even care (they’re probably working in the inside like Inho (Front Man))), people they’ve consulted with about the game (though that’s probably not that safe/ideal, so maybe just people who know about the game), who knows…). Yeah, he should’ve visited his daughter, but it’s within his character (the director did it on purpose). It’s obvious he’s not a good dad, but he’s not a bad one either, he just has survivor’s guilt, which then turns to remorse at the end when he takes the card from the guy and rejoins the game. He’s a good guy who makes generally good decisions (not all the time, but I guess that’s human nature), without taking consideration of his family or the future, which gives the perspective of him being a terrible person…
@@ajbrown7912 You think they won't kill or kidnap his daughter when they see he is trying to stop the game? She is in danger either way but now if she gets killed is because of her stupid dad that didn't even try to reconnect with her. He is a bad dad, not an alright dad, we started the story with him taking advatage of his mother, stealing from her, and gambling the money she gave her for his daughter. He couldn't even buy a present he had to gamble it to buy it, cause that is what he cares about, before he got fired he wasn't in his daughter's life but at least he provided for her financially. But after that he just stayed at his mother's house, not working just taking advantage of her, and what really showed how bad of a dad he is was his mother had to beg him to care about his daughter leaving him. For someone who cares, his interactions with the daughter, he seems like he don't know how to be a dad towards her and you can see she was trying to get a relationship with him but he didn't try hard enough.

It was an illusion of choice, everyone basically DID have to go back. They chose the people in society with the greatest debts that would have no recourse but the Squid Games to get the money they needed. Multiple people were clearly shown having their lives threatened by debt collectors or gangsters, and others had family they had to take care of but couldn't without that money. The Squid Game runners knowingly exploited that, there was never a real choice involved for anyone that wasn't willing to lay down and die.

Agree, they know the details of the people they chose to exploit and the game has been running for many years so they knew what's effective. old man saying that people were not forced is pure BS to free himself from guilt.. giving people another chance is also an illusion since games were designed to produce only one yearly winner based on the winners of the previous years. This was not disclosed to the players so they would take the bait.
@@daemonite6661 There's actually a major loan debt issue in Korea that this story plays on. It's not uncommon for there to be loans over there with 500% interest, and many people who needed them end up in crippling debt and commit suicide. Also, South Korea doesn't deport North Korean defectors, the boy would simply remain an orphan as bringing their mother out would cost more money than Sae-byeok could safely get her hands on. The problem is that rich people chose to exploit this problem rather than offer any kind of help, or at the very least ignoring these people. They are not doing them a favor by violently traumatizing and murdering people, comparing them to race horses, and treating their lives/safety as entertainment. It's what makes Ilnam the villain; He's choosing to be a bad person despite having the power to make positive change. Obviously some places have similarities with that, and obviously Squid Game didn't cover the entirety of all stemming issues, but what it did cover it covered quite well.
In particular, the title of this episode, "Lucky Day," is actually from the name of very famous Korean 1900s novel. The novel contains the lives of the underprivileged people living day by day in the Japanese colonial era. The main character of the novel is a husband, who drives a 인력거 (in modern society, it's like an Uber taxi driver, horse-drawn, but a carriage is dragged by a person instead, the driver himself). He works hard every day, but no matter how hard he works, he can't get out of poverty, so his family couldn't even eat a meal a day. But one day, his wife, who got sick after giving birth, asked him not to go to work today but to stay with her. However, if he can't work for a day, they had no money to live on. So the husband pretends not to care about his wife's words and goes to work. However, on that day, very unusual, but like a miracle, there were so many customers that he couldn't leave work. Yet instead, he was able to earn so much money that he could buy his wife a food called "설렁탕 Seolleongtang," which she wanted to eat so much after giving birth. (Seolleongtang is a clear meat soup made of beef. For the lower class who were so poor that they didn't have money to buy meat, so for them, even this food was so much expensive) The excited husband quickly took home the food his wife wanted to eat, just like the title of the novel keep saying what a lucky day, but when he got home, the only thing he could find was his dead wife and the newborn son who was sucking the empty milk of his mother. The husband sobbed and said to his wife, "Why can't you eat?" Why can't you eat..." The novel ends with a cry. Just by looking at the title you get to expect something bright and happy, but the contents of the novel were disastrous and miserable. It's a novel that describes the difficult times of that time in twist and irony.

One thing I loved about the old man reveal is that they dropped so many creative subtle hints to let you know he was one of the people who coordinated the game. My favorite hint was when the detective was checking the player files but none of them had a file for any players as "001" because 001 was always the old man joining in on the games so there was obviously no reason to keep files about him.
It was too obvious tbh 🙄 my dad and i joked about him being suspicious at episode 2 when he talked gihun to join in. We keep this as a running gag everytime he showed up on screen, but by the killing spree night, that seals the deal that he's evil. I'd do a prequel for season 2, tell the story of the cop's brother how he won and how the old man chose him to be his successor, then in season 3 you have the face off between these two.
The director mentioned in one interview about a possible season 2 that one idea he'd like to explore is the role of police on Korea. And therefore also concentrate on the Front Man more as well and explore him. He even had the line "When did the police in Korea ever act fast on anything?" Not an exact quote.

Also, compassion towards those about to enter the game and die isn't his only motivation. Revenge is his other motivation as well. He even says "I can't forgive you" on the phone. @@jasoncarvalho588 LONG INSIGHT BELOW: If you choose to read this, please keep in mind I wrote this mainly speaking to the claim that Gi-hun doesn't have a good heart 🙌 Was that not the whole point of the show? I'm not here to say your take on it is incorrect but rather to offer an alternative approach as yours has also given me some things to think about. Dude was stuck in all kinds of unfortunate circumstances. You're absolutely right that his past decisions were what got him where he was. Admittedly, yes, his actions in the beginning like stealing from his own mother to gamble is 100% a shitty one. However, the way I look at it, not once did he do those things with selfish ambitions. Now, selfish may be a tricky word to use depending on how you want to interpret it but what I mean by that is that he only ever gambled FOR his daughter and mother. For example, immediately after he wins the gambling money, he calls his daughter excited that he can afford something nice to eat for her birthday. Additionally, after the game of Ddakji in the subway, he immediately gives a part of it to his Mum. I don't recall him saying at any point that he wanted money for himself to spend it on pointless things. Throughout the entirety of the show, his motivations for even putting his life on the line was to create better opportunites in which he can improve his future relationship with his daughter. Moreover, with his mother in urgent need of professional care, on top of their existing living conditions, he made the choice to go through all of this FOR THEM. Of course, in the end, it was unfortunate timing that his absence from home was the time that his mother passed away. During that time though he was competing in the one thing that gave him the biggest chance of being able to gain money for those he cared about. Gi-hun having not spent any of the money a year after the game further proves the point that he wasn't selfish with the money that he had gained (mainly because that money was supposed to to go towards his mother's hospital bills). Even when he gains the strength to move forward, the one time we see him "spend" any of that money is when he gives it to Sang-woo's mother and Sae-byeok's little brother. You could look at this example as him putting the money towards another motherly figure seeing as his has passed on. In doing this, he also kept his promise to Sae-byeok that he would care for her brother. I agree with you that he did indeed abandon those he cared about but it wasn't when he joined the game, it was in the moments prior to. He was abandoning them more when he was there physically because of his dumb decisions to gamble, etc. Whereas, during the time he was absent, he was trying to do the complete opposite and was striving to undo the wrongs in order to benefit the others. I absolutely think that what you said is valid and true to a point but to dismiss all of this and say he doesn't have a good heart is something I think deserves a bit more reconsideration. As for his decision in not boarding the plane, although I personally would have liked for him to do so, the original comment pretty much sums it up rather well. It just sucked because it felt like all of this was a waste of time by that point but I see now why it may have been a better decision not to board
@@mahukarau3872 Gihun was selfish and was gambling to pay back his debt, that is guess what he previously gambled away previously. I will never feel bad for a grown-ass man staying home, taking advantage of his elderly mother, and making her support him. He gambles to pay his debt after HE STOLE FROM HIS SICK AND ELDERLY MOTHER and decided to gamble it away. The money he gamble was partly the some that the mom gave him and the other he stole, none of it was his. Where in the series did he try to connect with his daughter, when he forgot about her birthday or when Gihun's mother told him that she would be taken to American and never see him again and he didn't even react, the grandmother cared more. The thing is that all this I thought the story was used for a redemption arc where he comes back and helps them, nope the mom dies and he doesn't connect with the daughter. GIHUN=ZERO CHARACTER ARC. Him not going to connect with his daughter, just so the show can have season 2, makes his character even less of the "good-hearted " person you guys are talking about. He just didn't want to kill people in the game that doesn't exci=use non of his actions outside the game. Just to finish he went to the game because he was so down financially he need to get the money or he would lose his eyes or organs. When they left the game he went back to pay his debt and to pay for the surgery, but the mom has no money because she was supporting his selfish ass, so you correcting your wrong doesn't make you right, it's neutral. @@jasoncarvalho588 violent union breakouts were apparently common in Korea back in the day. If you ask me, he was an alright dad given the culture and the circumstances, not based on western values. Also, correcting a wrong also doesn't make anything "neutral", it's just growth. He probably decided to go back to the games because his mom's health was the tipping point. If he didn't go, that would've been the selfish, although overall smart, thing to do. And I think it's realistic to get survival's guilt and become a bit useless after going through something like that. No use helping others when you yourself are a complete mess.
@@helloneighbour2408 Because people are trying to explain why he has red hair now, with reasons such as 'red is a very dominant colour, which also is yhe colour used by the red soldiers of squid game, who were the dominate ones. I think Gi-Han becoming a vigilante at the end makes sense. The whole time his morality was to be a good person and he didn't kill except on Tug of war where it he didnt have a choice. He isn't the kind of guy that will let the games to keep going and let all those people die. There will definitely be a season 2, Gi Hand and the cop will be there. @@Duweeadyale Naw, the only thing the creator said is that he will need more help if there is going to be a second season since he basically wrote and directed the whole season and has been working on it for years. I doubt this lawsuit, if it is real, will stop a season 2 from happening.
SPOILER!! SPOILER!! His mom’s death is even more sad when you realize she died during the marble game when everyone else died. “I haven’t heard from her in 2 days.” 2 days ago they were playing the marble game when everyone had to kill their best friend.
I have a respect of Sang-woo because of two decisions. One, he was the one that brought up clause 3 and allowed some people to actually walk away. Second, no life could get between him and the money getting to help his mother, not even his own. Was he good, no, was he evil, I say no. He resolved himself to win the game, by any means, when he returned. There isn't enough information on the crimes he committed for me to condemn him for them.
imo he was devil. its true that i don’t know what i would do under these circumstances, maybe i would do like what he did but for me he’s not evil when he knows that there’s only one winner but he doesn’t know this so he want all the money by himself
There is enough info. He was a crook and even used his mothers business. he was a broker that stole money from his clients and lost it in the stock market. He redeemed himself of course but there is just enough information to understand him as a morally shaky person.
So that’s why the crazy women wasn’t killed when she had no teamates, the old man was literally the Guy with the most chance to not being picked. Plus he quitted when he dis had a high probability of dying in the glass game
I don't think the old man wanted to avoid dying because I haven't seen any reasoning given for how he would have survived tug of war if Sang Woo hadn't come up with a plan. I think he was genuinely curious to watch Gi Hun and see what he does because of what he says in this episode. Gi Hun may be terrible with money and make dumb decisions, but I think he would probably help that person on the street get to safety. In episode one he was legit being chased by loan sharks and stopped to try and pick up Sae Byeoks drink and give it back to her.
What's funny to me is that Gi-hun's attempt to stop the game actually leans into exactly what Sang Woo was saying. Gi-hun was willing to walk away with nothing and Sang Woo was not okay with that (even if it meant that Sang Woo himself wasn't the one that walked away the winner). The two of them both held to their convictions (well, mostly so) until the end. And there was a solid job of portraying that by both actors.
The ending of this gave me heavy Resident Evil vibes. Gi-hun resembled Leon when he was a noob, inexperienced and fragile but as the franchise grew he became more bad ass as he tried to expose and destroy umbrella. I am glad the show evolved into more than just the games, the world building was amazing and I would love to see the action and play making pick up for future seasons.
the director/writer himself already said that he ISN'T planning to do a season 2 anytime soon or ever, since it was so draining and he worked very hard by himself for months trying to get ideas flowing for the show, but he did say if he was to make s2 he wouldn't work alone but instead work with multiple writers on creating s2 if he chose to do it. I'm guessing from the cliff hanger, popularity and demand for s2 its likely he might make s2 but not anytime soon

Jun-Ho will make an extreme comeback in Season 2. Mark my words. His character was too important tbh especially with his brother being the frontman. Too big of a plot point to be put to the side completely.
One Lucky Day is the title of this episode because Koreans have said that the scene with Gi Hun going home is a nod to a novel with the same title. The story goes is that the main character conflicts between earning money to sustain life, and looking after his ill wife. He decided to earn more money and bought a meal that his wife wanted so much using the money he earned, but before going home he stayed at a bar to have a bit of fun to celebrate since it was a “lucky day” for earning a lot. Unfortunately by the time he went home his wife had already died. This pretty much is what happened to Gi Hun when he comes home winning big but his mom had already died.
Side note : if they both decided to give up on the last game , the total money on the piggy bank will all go to the eliminated player's family 100k won each .
The title "One Lucky Day" is a reference to a classic Korean short story, and foreshadows the death of mom :( In the original story, a poor man who makes living by pulling carriages (rickshaw man) has a lucky day and gets a lot of money, and buys a beef soup for his sick wife on his way home and finds that she passed away while he was pulling the carriage. It's a really beautifully written story; I recently read it and it left me in tears..
nah in an interview the director said: “I thought about this intuitively,” the director said, “thinking about how Gi Hun should change his hair in a hair salon. I imagined being him and thought to myself, ‘what is the color that you would never choose to dye your hair?’ Then I came to the conclusion that Gi Hun would never dye his hair red. It would be the craziest thing for him to do. So I chose the color and I thought it really showed his inner anger.” so
@@asyuruu honestly, I’ve noticed that with this fan base. everything has to have some deeper meaning and nothing can be a weird choice or bad writing because you can just make up anything to justify it.
i dont think many people noticed especially the non-korean speaking ones, sang hoo only called gi hun as "hyung". it means older brother. they are not blood related but both of them were close enough that they considered each other as brothers. throughout the episodes, you can see sang hoo looking out for gi hun. yes, he ddnt gave a hint on that sugar carving game but when gi hun said he'll pick the umbrella, he was worried for him but stopped himself from helping him. also after that game is over, you can see sang hoo just looking at the door expecting gi hun to survive and come out what im trying to say is sang hoo, deepdown, still respects gi hun as an older brother all this time also no one really mentioned that sang hoo tried to kill himself in that bathroom scene before they restart the game. he was burning something so that the smoke will cover the entire bathroom and make himself suffocate

@@daffaagung Box office numbers and acclaims aren't what makes movies good. Train to Busan was another widely popular movie that took a concept done to death and came out with an A+. It addressed a lot of social commentary and made grown men bawl in it too. "The Host" was another good movie that was creative with its genre and widely regarded as top tier as well. But I don't think the OP is insinuating that everything Korean made in terms of films and tv is gold. But they certainly understand the assignment in examples like this.
Nope. It’s what gets you killed unnecessarily. You can only meddle if you have all the facts right, all the moves planned out and are prepared for every backlash possible.
The title of this episode originated from a very famous Korean novel 'One Lucky Day' which is '운수좋은날' in Korean. This novel is about a family who are very pool. One day, the husband have the opportunity to earn a lot of money by driving a rickshaw than usual. So he buys a food for his sick wife who is waiting for him to come back home. After coming back home, he tries to wake his wife who passed away while he went out to earn money. Then comes the famous line "I'm home dear..I brought some food.. why can't you eat it.. It has been a one lucky day" which is pretty much similar from the Gi hun's line from 8:41. For almost all the Korean audiences, the title, the line and the story flow of this episode naturally recalls the original novel. I wrote this comment to just help the foreign audiences to understand that the title isn't 'One lucky day' because he won the game but is a metaphor of the original novel.
sorry but the "red light green light" game is just a liberal translation for English. the original is "A Mugunghwa flower is bloomed" game. no any rerate with color. (mugunghwa could be althaea in english maybe? i dont no)
I don't think so... Because Korean name of 'Green light, Red light' is 'Hibiscus has bloomed'. *Hibiscus=Mugunghwa(Mogoonghwa) In fact the girl robot said in Korean 'Mugunghwa flower has bloomed' So it seems no related between his hair color.
The director said his hair color was symbol of change for his life. And because of schedule he wore a wig. He said that while interviewing in the news channel, few days ago.(Sorry for my grammar)
This is the perfect depiction of living a life as a winner without getting blood on your hands. He prolly would be thr only winner who never killed anyone by intention during the game....because the old man who he shouldv'e killed at the marble game wasn't actually dead. You see, living by principle doesn't always make you a loser! Thank you Gi-hun!
Oh yeah the tug of war and on the 1st game when we refused to help the guy that has been shot clinging on his leg.....but maybe it is safe to say he didn't took a life single handedly and freely like the rest who we're desperate to win.
It's crazy because the whole organisation can still track him from that chip in the back of his ear (from the 1st episode) that's how they probably knew he was about to board a plane
Sheera: "I don't like this, why are they stopping, so all those people died for nothing?" Me: "But...if they were to stop, those people's remaining families would get the money, no?"
Like another youtuber pointed out, Gi-hun was already an activist and had already participated in protests, so his last decision to go and fight back is completely in character for him.
I love how in the end they talk about betting them like horses, while in the beginning our main character had a gabbing addiction himself. ( And the fact that in the first episode he was also betting on horsed for fun and money- is outstanding )
As much as I love Sang Woo character and his arch. And it's really interesting to analyze his character. I still hated him for his actions. Which is okay. We don't live in a black and white world. I live his character but he is a bad guy.
How are yall going to drop this at 12. I was expecting to cry my eyes out later in the night thank you very much! Nah but seriously thanks for the early drop
Roshi's a man of culture, Sang-Woo had to do what was necessary to survive, not a lot of people see it because he killed their favorite characters & came out as a merciless killer. But at the end of the Squid Game, he began realizing everything he did and realized there wouldn't be a way back to the times when they were kids.
I really hope there's a seaon 2, but so far it looks like Netflix hasn't ordered it yet. Given the success of season 1, it would seem obvious they'd want another one, but the creator/director has said that he does not have a clear plan for a season 2 and would probably rely on a staff of writers. I think the success was unexpected and if it takes a while to order a season 2 that might be because the creator is going to be able to ask for a lot more money. It would definitely behoove Netflix to give the guy a shovelful of money and a good budget and a staff full of writers and hammer out a really good follow up. There are enough open story lines that they could take it in a lot of directions. They even left it open for the cop to still be alive.
Full disclosure, I binged watched all 9 episodes. Once they sent everyone back to the world in ep. 2, i knew i had to see how it all was going to end. Totally worth it tho.
20:00 That's after the marble game. It's the missing bit from between the scene where we see the host take his mask off and put it down and the scene where the VIPs arrive, hence "And our guests, go and greet them for me".
One lucky day is actually the title of a book that's very famous in Korea. The story is basically a poor man's "lucky day" where he earned more money than he ever did before but it was also the day his wife died. I would dare to say everyone in Korea has heard of this at least once. So to us "one lucky day" is synonym to very unlucky day.
Bro just IMAGINE you go through all of that, you live in drunken misery for a year, and not only does your best friend turn out to be the one responsible, but his reason for it was "I'm rich and bored." Gi-hun really is the best person in the world if he could hear that and not rip that old bastard apart.
LOVED watching all your reactions! My takeaway; Gi went through the most horrible PTSD on a few levels really; 1. the already exisiting PTSD when he saw that guy die in front of him at the strike at his old work that never got resolved (go to therapy people!), as you correctly said that’s when he really spiralled out of control. 2. Then to go into this game where he made genuine connections with people (Sae Byeok, Ali etc) and watched them all die one by one 3. Then have to fight his long time friend in a squid game death match where he eventually killed himself (I genuinely think Sang-Woo killed himself due to shame more than anything, even if he won the money, how was he ever going to face his mother again? And his community?) 4. Coming home only for his mum to already have died in his absence l. 5. ON TOP of all that, the only other person he made the closest connection to (player 001) was literally the Big Boss of the whole damn thing! I think we need to give him some leeway on how long it took him to come around, he saw it as blood money and after all that and actually winning and “going by the rules” he still felt he didn’t deserve to use the money due to some of the points mentioned above. Gi showed us time and time again that he has a big heart and is deep down a good person, he is listening to his heart at the end because he wants to take the VIPs and their sick game down and save those who unwittingly find themselves down this horrible rabbit hole. Some the most crazy things people have done in life (and in history) to save other people or do the ultimate, self sacrifice is due to them having a following their heart. Prediction S2: cop still alive (it looked like he was shot in the shoulder but I may be wrong), he and Ghi try and take down Squid Game and maybe once again there may be someone he knows in the newest instalment of the game (maybe his ex or something) P.S: he also still kept his promise to both Sang Woo and Sae Byeok (eventually) and looked after their families and even left little brother with Sang Woo’s mum so they had each other in their loneliness
for the editor, Gi-hun's decision at the last part isn't really fully his decision. The people at squid game is prolly keeping an eye for Gi-hun and is probably planning to hijack the plane or something if he does go in it.
@@yonut2oo5e Nah. Remember when the front man said watch the others that didn't come back, the same could be said for the winners. That's most likely just in case they don't try anything to expose or ruin the game (which he's literally going to do)

Usually, seeing your mother on the floor like that would evoke a lot of emotion, crying and screaming. Gi-hun was so emotionally drained from all the events of the game, he had none of that left over.
All he could do was lie down next to his mother the way he did.
Freaking gutting.

I actually really like his last decision, i probably wouldn't do it. But it's pretty in character for him, he got survivor's remorse and he is genuinely a man who does good without thinking about the future, it's also really cool how, even tough he's a good person, he's not a good father. The money can't change that, his decisions can.
Yeah I agree. It just makes sense that he would go back bc of how they wrote his character.
Him laying down next to his mom and rubbing her side made me ugly cry😭
same, it was like a kid sleeping with his mother.... (༎ຶ ෴ ༎ຶ)
The director said he actually added Gi-hun's line about having money in that scene as an ad-lib. Just hearing the number of small things that were improvised or added to the script and made scenes better was wild.
Every once in a while, its good to have an ugly cry….but damn this still sucks.

I'd add that since he now knows they're still watching him. He doesn't want his daughters new life and exact location know to them. @henrymanley4116 my bad, I was just estimating. Thanks for calling me out though.
But what if they kidnap his daughter or something, these people are so fucked up they'd be willing to hurt a child to silence him.
@@ororomunroe4055 idk, they are cruel, but I don’t think they’re willing to harm people that are not involved in the game, unless Gihun (and Junho) intervene too much

Him and the cop who got shot in the shoulder?

The Squid Game runners knowingly exploited that, there was never a real choice involved for anyone that wasn't willing to lay down and die.
yea but how do you take millions of wan from gangsters and be like "its fine im sure ill just get a slap on the wrist" just remember if the game never happened all these people including sang wu are dead, the little brother gets deported to the north and there are no happy endings at all. the game is messed up but a lot of people will do surprisingly messed up stuff with no game at all just for a chance
For the lower class who were so poor that they didn't have money to buy meat, so for them, even this food was so much expensive)
The excited husband quickly took home the food his wife wanted to eat, just like the title of the novel keep saying what a lucky day, but when he got home, the only thing he could find was his dead wife and the newborn son who was sucking the empty milk of his mother.

There are also lots of hints that he's 456's father.
It was too obvious tbh 🙄 my dad and i joked about him being suspicious at episode 2 when he talked gihun to join in. We keep this as a running gag everytime he showed up on screen, but by the killing spree night, that seals the deal that he's evil. Personally I don't like the way they dropped the so called obvious "creative subtle hint" but ok
Gong Yoo, the actor who played the "recruiter" for the Squid Game, was also the main star in Train To Busan. Here in Squid Game, every time he appears, the scene is set a train station. The lesson: if you see Gong Yoo anywhere near a train, run.

The director mentioned in one interview about a possible season 2 that one idea he'd like to explore is the role of police on Korea. And therefore also concentrate on the Front Man more as well and explore him. He even had the line "When did the police in Korea ever act fast on anything?" Not an exact quote.
This is my opinion on Gihun's decision to not board the airplane. I completely understand people being frustrated with Gihun's decision on a personal level, but him turning around in order to at least attempt to stop the games is very much in-character in terms of writing. And it's not like he's "abandoning" his daughter in a shitty situation, as some people are kind of claiming him to be doing. He knows his daughter is safe and has a stable life in the US with her mother and her stepfather. It has been shown throughout the show that while Gihun has made some terrible mistakes in his life and is perceptible to falling low just like any other human being, he does ultimately have a good heart. Gihun just can't let himself pursue his own happiness while knowing that there are hundreds of people about to die. Also, compassion towards those about to enter the game and die isn't his only motivation. Revenge is his other motivation as well. He even says "I can't forgive you" on the phone. So even if some people hate Gihun's final decision, it makes perfect sense why he chose to not board the plane story-wise and character-wise.
i lost you at have a good heart. This dude murdered others
@@chrischika7026 @SKG Like this man stole from his mother, gambled, FORGOT ABOUT HIS DAUGHTER, and then goes to the game comes out cant save his mom, of course maybe she could've had the money if you didn't steal from her. No Gihun is a piece of shit who abandoned everyone that loved or helped him, since the beginning of the story. In the end I thought ohh at least we will have a character arc of him improving the relationship with the daughter, since the mom is died already, nah. He is Liam Neeson now. LONG INSIGHT BELOW:
If you choose to read this, please keep in mind I wrote this mainly speaking to the claim that Gi-hun doesn't have a good heart 🙌
Was that not the whole point of the show?
He was stuck in the circumstance he created himself when he was fired he could have gotten a job and the story showed he wasn't even trying to find one.
Also, the other people he saved were promises not some selfless action that he just thought about, plus I took him a whole year to do it and I guess he didn't care about Ali's family. He was rich enough to track them down.
@@jasoncarvalho588 violent union breakouts were apparently common in Korea back in the day. I don't think it's easy to get another job if you have that in your history, no employer wants a "violent" worker (also you can't just tell him to "find another job" as if he didn't try again and again).

Gi-hun was willing to walk away with nothing and Sang Woo was not okay with that (even if it meant that Sang Woo himself wasn't the one that walked away the winner). The two of them both held to their convictions (well, mostly so) until the end. And there was a solid job of portraying that by both actors.

The story goes is that the main character conflicts between earning money to sustain life, and looking after his ill wife. Actually the creator said it’s to show his frustration…
nah in an interview the director said: “I thought about this intuitively,” the director said, “thinking about how Gi Hun should change his hair in a hair salon. I imagined being him and thought to myself, ‘what is the color that you would never choose to dye your hair?’ Then I came to the conclusion that Gi Hun would never dye his hair red. It would be the craziest thing for him to do. So I chose the color and I thought it really showed his inner anger.” so
y'all just say anything 😭
@@asyuruu honestly, I’ve noticed that with this fan base.
everything has to have some deeper meaning and nothing can be a weird choice or bad writing because you can just make up anything to justify it.
Your reaction were so priceless when you guys read "from your ggangbu" 😭 it's so good to rewatch this with you guys
i dont think many people noticed especially the non-korean speaking ones, sang hoo only called gi hun as "hyung". it means older brother. they are not blood related but both of them were close enough that they considered each other as brothers.
throughout the episodes, you can see sang hoo looking out for gi hun. yes, he ddnt gave a hint on that sugar carving game but when gi hun said he'll pick the umbrella, he was worried for him but stopped himself from helping him. also after that game is over, you can see sang hoo just looking at the door expecting gi hun to survive and come out
what im trying to say is sang hoo, deepdown, still respects gi hun as an older brother all this time
also no one really mentioned that sang hoo tried to kill himself in that bathroom scene before they restart the game. he was burning something so that the smoke will cover the entire bathroom and make himself suffocate
It's so evident that Gihun feels guilty of how he got his money and we all know that he's character would never let him
20:23 that scared the living shit out of me
I thought it was all over for me
No cap, this is briliant script ever ... i meant it was almost first time actually liked the ENDing....with this type of TV show...damnnn it was good... really good with productions, incredible acting and so on 👍
Korean really know how to make goood movies.. i tell ya.. seriously !!! mad respact to director !!
Wow chill... They only have made 2 international hit with this and parasite..
That gunshot at 20:23 killed me in real life.

That "[stares in bad acting]" is hilarious truth
“Stares in bad acting” 😂😂
Meddling when you don’t need to is the essence of being a hero - All-Might/Toshinori Yagi, man All-Might was right. I hope Giyun lives for this.
Nope. It’s what gets you killed unnecessarily. You can only meddle if you have all the facts right, all the moves planned out and are prepared for every backlash possible.
A fun fact:
if Sang-Woo was numbered '228" then it would have been "228*2=456" which implies he's twice suffering from the other one.
By that logic 67 suffered a third of 228
The title of this episode originated from a very famous Korean novel 'One Lucky Day' which is '운수좋은날' in Korean.
In an interview with the director of Squid Game, it was announced that the plan for season 2 was still undecided.
"You can't move on the Red Light"
*Gi-hun dye his hair red and can't move on from the game*
sorry but the "red light green light" game is just a liberal translation for English. the original is "A Mugunghwa flower is bloomed" game. no any rerate with color. (mugunghwa could be althaea in english maybe? i dont no)
@@박그레이트-p9w Oh... well, guess it was just a coincidence then... Thanks for clarifying.
I don't think so... Because Korean name of 'Green light, Red light' is 'Hibiscus has bloomed'. *Hibiscus=Mugunghwa(Mogoonghwa)
In fact the girl robot said in Korean 'Mugunghwa flower has bloomed'
So it seems no related between his hair color.
The director said his hair color was symbol of change for his life. And because of schedule he wore a wig. He said that while interviewing in the news channel, few days ago.(Sorry for my grammar)
@@rjw3737 Don't worry, and thanks for the information.
He killed during the tug of war game tho, but he didn't have a choice anyway
Oh yeah the tug of war and on the 1st game when we refused to help the guy that has been shot clinging on his leg.....but maybe it is safe to say he didn't took a life single handedly and freely like the rest who we're desperate to win.
"[stares in bad acting]"
LMFAO
7:43 The way she's just talking like she's placing an order to go while Gi Hun is wailing in the background has me laughing.
It's crazy because the whole organisation can still track him from that chip in the back of his ear (from the 1st episode) that's how they probably knew he was about to board a plane
Sheera: "I don't like this, why are they stopping, so all those people died for nothing?"
Me: "But...if they were to stop, those people's remaining families would get the money, no?"
The end, I enjoyed rewatching the series with yall's reactions, old man reveal finally here too
Like another youtuber pointed out, Gi-hun was already an activist and had already participated in protests, so his last decision to go and fight back is completely in character for him.
Season 2 is confirmed, can’t wait for the reactions
"Stares in bad acting"
That got me good. Haha!
To finish off the series you guys should watch a video explaining all the hidden meanings/symbols!!
One of the goated series out there, loved the reaction ❤️
STARES IN BAD ACTING LMAO
I'm glad I wasn't the only one who noticed that lolll
I really like the old man, you really can’t blame for anything. He cool
giving people the chance to win so much money who are pretty much dead anyway they dont have anything to lose.
My takeaway;
Gi went through the most horrible PTSD on a few levels really;
1. the already exisiting PTSD when he saw that guy die in front of him at the strike at his old work that never got resolved (go to therapy people!), as you correctly said that’s when he really spiralled out of control.
2. Then to go into this game where he made genuine connections with people (Sae Byeok, Ali etc) and watched them all die one by one
3. Then have to fight his long time friend in a squid game death match where he eventually killed himself (I genuinely think Sang-Woo killed himself due to shame more than anything, even if he won the money, how was he ever going to face his mother again? And his community?)
Prediction S2: cop still alive (it looked like he was shot in the shoulder but I may be wrong), he and Ghi try and take down Squid Game and maybe once again there may be someone he knows in the newest instalment of the game (maybe his ex or something)
P.S: he also still kept his promise to both Sang Woo and Sae Byeok (eventually) and looked after their families and even left little brother with Sang Woo’s mum so they had each other in their loneliness
Just going to drag the tears i cried for this old man right back into my eye pockets
If you guys were the last contestants of Squid Game I just know Roshi is gonna win it. Lol

y’all were hella entertaining all series long! You gained a new fan, thank you for everything👍🏽
I am so excited for season 2, I want to know what Gi-hun (sorry if I spelled that wrong!) is going to do! It was such a good season!
for the editor, Gi-hun's decision at the last part isn't really fully his decision. The people at squid game is prolly keeping an eye for Gi-hun and is probably planning to hijack the plane or something if he does go in it.
exactly! They're watching him so ofc he's going to shut that game down for others and for the safety of his daughter.
Nah. They're watching him after the dude saw him at the subway.
@@yonut2oo5e Nah. Remember when the front man said watch the others that didn't come back, the same could be said for the winners. That's most likely just in case they don't try anything to expose or ruin the game (which he's literally going to do)
@@seri4636 you're right. Forgot about that part.
I bet the next season we'll find out Ju-ho is still alive and him and Gi-hun will team up to try stop the squid games and we'll see the games from a new player's perspective and Gi-hun's perspective just like we seen Ju-ho's perspective this season
