The fact that this show got scrubbed for so many years In the Director never gave up though and I'm so glad he didn't he gave us such a gem of a show and _I enjoyed every minute of it_
Netflix would pretty much buy every script that has been tossed for many years from studios to studios. Basically like Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro developing The Irishman, it took them decades to get the movie made cuz no studio is interested in working with them anymore which is honestly ridiculous but thank goodness Netflix was willing enough to take risk and show that the script that have been tossed for many years could finally be executed properly
I hope the art director wins an award, her work was pure poetry especially the marbles game set and the when the vips attend . Truly a great example of balancing several styles very specifically and for incredible effect.
I think Ali's character was one of the best, a sacrificial lamb character, innocent and pure hearted who gets betrayed in the worst way possible. Also like the immigrant in new country expecting kindness and all dreams to come true, just then to find that things are just as bad as where he has left before. Ali's betrayal scene was heart wrenching and shocking, like the innocent of child destroyed.
Ali wasn't a good character, he was very one dimensional, his whole personality was that he was nice while everyone else had complex and multilayered personalities. The best character is sang-woo imo
I hope every studio that passed on this over the last 10 years remembers when they had the chance to make this but I’m glad Netflix got it. It’s a great fit for the platform!
@opzz xsin The actor is actually pretty famous for his voice, he gets cast in villain roles usually because of it. Squid Game is probably one of the only roles he plays as the main protagonist
@@imcontemptwithlife4155 lmao this is the weirdest, most random comment I’ve seen in a while. Also - coming from a carnist, the veggie rolls are legit better than the pork ones. No gristle.
The acting, and the storyline are definitely world class, but I don't think people gave enough appreciation to the artistic aspect of the show. The set they designed for this series, each of them are individual pieces of art. The attention to detail is mind blowing.
Artistically and Cinematically breathtaking. The framing of each shot is flawless, the editing is brilliant, the sets are out of this damn world. Combine that with a heartbreaking story like this, I feel it's on its way for awards internationally.
Absolutely. I was consistently and constantly impressed by the stellar cinematography. It felt like I was part of an involved experience. I especially love the long, empty shots near the end of the show. To me, those shots symbolize the emptiness that the shattered mind of Gi-hun was left with after the games. The final shot of the last episode is one continuous scene that lasts for nearly 5 minutes, and I can't help but feel that every single second was so deliberate and so flawlessly executed. What a fantastic show.
Just adding as a Korean, the title of the last episode; A Lucky Day is a homage to a famous Korean novel "A Lucky Day" by Hyun JinGeon. In the novel the protagonist, a rickshaw driver, happens to get unusually more customers than usual leading him to work until very late. On his way home, he remembers his sick wife's wish to eat Seollung-tang (bone-marrow soup). Hence, he picks-up a bowl of Seollung-tang only to find his wife had passed away
Thank you for this story! I feel like as someone who just watched the subtitles I missed out on so much context so I'm always thankful for when people take the time to share
Thank you so much for sharing this! The more Korean culture easter eggs I find, the more I enjoy this show. Sang-woo's bathtub scene for example. I thought he was getting high because he just felt so desperate then I learned that's a common suicide method in Korea and the scene made so much more sense.
Okay but like the majority of shows do NOT give this much credit to the art director. Especially with this much praise. So hats off to them for including this artistic genius so we can understand what was being planned.
Yes, but it seems that the visual environment is so captivating to everyone watching, that it almost seems is if there were no other choice but to include her. Everyone wants to know what she was thinking. But yes props to the director for letting her the space to express her talent, and explaining it afterwards. I wish that in the future, more art directors, graphic designers and others will be even more recognised for their work.
I deleted my previous comment because I read it again and I understood it. 😂 You are correct. However, in the industry, good art directors are celebrities among designers. Like Adam Stockhausen or Annie Atkins the two art directors that work with Wes Anderson or Mina Lima, who have worked on the Harry Potter films.
I like how many deaths are foreshadowed in earlier scenes 1) Ali stole money from his boss, he died having the marbles stolen from him by Sang-woo 2) Sang-woo tried to kill himself in a baththub, he died drenched in rain and sucessfully killing himself 3) Sae-byeok threatened the guy with her knife pressed against his neck, she died being stab in the neck on the same spot 4) Gangster Deok-su escaped jumping into the water off a bridge, he died falling to his death in the glass bridge 5) Added after suggestion: Jun-ho killed one of the soldiers and threw him into the water, he died (maybe) and fell in the water
Also: When they voted to get out of the game Gi-hun and Sae-byeok were left tied up on the road, gi hun swore on his mother life that he wont attack sae byeok. He did tried to and at the end his mother dies After tug of war that crazy lady said how she never felt so powerful while leaning back. She died by her own will while leaning back.
I love the fact that this show wasn’t glorifying violence or death like it wasn’t just doing violence for violence but to actually make an impact on you. That was the game itself but it the meaning and insights behind it made it worth your while. It wasn’t just a show where people died it was so much more to do with their characters and their journey surrounding human nature
I disagree. I watch and have seen probably every horror movie you could name and the violence in them have purpose but I can’t watch a single war movie cause the constant mindless death is just horrible to watch. The scene where they all started fighting each other for no reason reminded me of that cause it was just sad horrible violence and death for no reason I almost stopped watching cause of that scene luckily it got back on track though
@@aspenisthebest this is the reason I didn't like the show at first. I thought it was another one of those kill porn medias but glad it went back on track too
As much as we all praise the actors for their performances, we should also give an equal amount of love for the art director. Half of Squid Game's quality came from the amazing set and costume design. Those stairway shots alone deserve their own mention
Low concept high execution. There's nothing particularly clever or original about copying an MC Escher image, but the level of detail and realism they acheived on a low budget was truly astounding.
Yeah set is like unbelievable. I like how it all- the costume, set, and atmosphere everything suggested that the games were kid games and weren't like some heavy games, but also suggested that it was all a maze which you can't escape and which gives an eerie vibe. It's difficult tho think such things. The whole series filled with symbolization. The rides in park, so big, which showed how a small kid will feel coming to the park. The doll, looking so sweet and not deadly just how kids play with but is deadly.
The art director absolutely knocked it out of the park. Don't get me wrong, the acting, writing, and directing were all incredible. The series was an overall masterpiece. But the visual style was the absolute PERFECT balance between incredibly dark themes and whimsical visuals. It tricked your brain in a very odd way into thinking you were watching something cheery and lighthearted, only to be hit with something macabre and evil. Brilliant job.
Isn't it the *exact* opposite way, though? You go into the show fully expecting to watch something messed-up because you know it's a survival game where people are killed, but the dissonance caused by the colorful and childlike aesthetics is what makes it all the more unsettling; it's constantly screaming at you, "For the ones in charge, this is just entertainment." Now that I think about it, the black coffin with the pink ribbon on it really sums up the show's entire art direction.
@@duckling4073 There's nothing slife-of-life about the setting 🤣 playing games for the Illuminati so you can get out of crippling debt isn't an everyday thing lol
@@ab452 it was a pretty interesting artistic show. The sounds and visuals were perfect. Maybe the story was a little rushed but other than that it was great
The actor who plays Gi-Hun was so good. i just felt like he was a real person and not an actor playing a character. I look forward to seeing him maybe in Squid Game season 2 and other projects!
Ki Hoon's role is one of the famous middle-aged actors in Korea who debuted as a high-teen star in the 1990s and has played various roles for 30 years. I act various characters every time.
Lee Jung-Jae is 48. He's great in "Along With The Gods" 1 and 2. Even though it's a supporting role, he steals the scenes he's in. He's mainly a movie actor, rated than a k-drama actor. He's SUPER famous in Korea.
The stray cat scene is actually incredibly effective to Gihun's personality and his relationship with money. He wastes money and goods at gambling. He has to beg people for money. You hate him for it. But when he does get a bit of money or something precious he flaunts it a bit or gives it away (i.e. the cat, the money tender girl) it gives him a sense that he wants to be a good and helpful person. And the best way he can think of is using money he doesn't even have.
What made me like him was that he was helping Il-nam all the time, he clearly respects people and cares about them. He showed respect and assistance to the weakest people actively in a death game. Which made the marbles scene all the more heartbreaking.
I read how some people didnt like him, saying how he was ready to do anything but spend time with his daughter or try to get her back. (last scene where he ditches the airplane and goes back for the squid game) For me, personally, I disliked how he didnt try more to help his mother, at the last scene where he calls a vote to stop the game it was stupid to me that he didnt think once about his mom or his daughter.
@@BuyMeRedBull He went there for his daughter. He went BACK in because he needed to help his mother as well as his daughter. Leaving the airplane is clearly because he wants to stop squid game so more people don't die.
The fact that the art director is featured as crucial a piece as the director speaks volumes of what made this show so great. It would not have been nearly as captivating without that set and costume design etc. The art director is brilliant, bravo! 👏👏👏
I can’t believe the scene with Gi-hun picking up Sae-byeok’s coffee was ad-libbed! I actively remember watching that and thinking it was a smart narrative choice (and kind of funny to boot). It’s so nice to see a show get big that’s not from the Hollywood machine. It felt poignant and different in the best way!
Same. I, also, am surprised that the coffee picking scene was ad-libbed. I initially thought that this scene well potrays that even if Gihun was in the most difficult circumstances, he never forgets to help a person. That is what he did until the end. He was going to sacrifice the whole money for a person who tried to kill him and also even after he did what not to reach till that stage. I thought this coffee scene is a lot expressing 😂 But I can see why didn't the makers retake that scene and kept the ad-lipped one
That ad-lib was perfect because it went right with the character and what we saw of him throughout the series. A bit of a big mess, but genuine kindness mixed in there at times
@@soulangela7154 I agree on that part, though my point is that it's feels kinda funny to see one of the most famous actor doing supporting roles while they use less popular actors for main roles.
@@孫子 Ahh I don't really mind that, but maybe because I don't know these actors since I'm not too familair with korean actors yet. It'd probably feel a bit weird to me too if I saw that with actors I know. I do like this though, they were given the opportunity and they did an amazing job. I would've never guessed this was their first acting job or first big acting job.
They picked the perfect actor for Gi-hun, his expressions are so sweet and child-like, he could have been a very unlikeable character, but it was impossible not to sympathize with him. If they'd have killed him off it would have been a huge unexpected twist, but I bet people would have been in an uproar.
i do think he is very unlikeable though. but i'm of the opinion that just because he's the main character, doesn't mean he's the "best" character. he's clearly a flawed protagonist and his faults are honestly never resolved. but i think it's okay for movies/tv to do that sometimes, have imperfect characters. makes it feel more real. i was really expecting him to sacrifice himself for sae byeok at some point though, her death seemed the laziest to me, so random.
@@dyl_out I honestly think his only flaw was that he’s a good person for all the wrong reasons. His motives for going back in the game at first are understandable but it’s his character wanting to stop the game forcing him to go back in the end that was horrible. I wish he had chose his daughter. His daughter is another example of his heart being in the wrong place. All he had to do was buy her chicken, instead he felt the need to gamble regardless of the risk because he wanted to give her something more when that’s not important. To me when they show first starts you think he’s a low life leech but as the episodes pass I realized he’s actually a genuine dude, his priorities are just out of wack because he’s focused on things that don’t and shouldn’t matter. Also he couldn’t have sacrificed himself for her, she knew she wasn’t going to make it and was already weak from her injury. Sang-woo would’ve killed her in the final game anyway (if he hadn’t killed her overnight) so his sacrifice would’ve been for nothing.
@@SinSinny I think he has tremendous guilt and big time pstd where he won’t be able to be fully present with her daughter, knowing that he has the opportunity to right the wrong and stop the game altogether, so he could be free from his guilt in a way. He probably thought, “oh my daughter is in good hands, but I cannot let this game go on”. To be fair, the second season would start a lot better if he’s involved because of his experience. After all, he’s our eyes and we don’t want a newbie to be our eyes in the second season when we already know how the game works.
@@RA-fw5yc that’s very true. Either way I’m so excited for the second season but of course part of me is mad at him for not going to his daughter 🥲 I just hope they don’t kill him off before he has the chance to realize the bigger picture.

A show so magnificently written and executed that people of all languages and cultures are deeply appreciating this masterpiece. We absolutely love to see it!! 🥰😍 this show needs the recognition it deserves!!
Sweetie darling, didn't you hear the news? This is the most-watched show that Netflix has *ever* released. Of course, so many comments are in English - we ate this up harder than a game of thrones!
When things were at their very worst: 2 Suns, Cross in the sky, 2 comets will collide = don`t be afraid - repent, accept Lord`s Hand of Mercy. Scientists will say it was a global illusion. Beware - Jesus will never walk in flesh again. After WW3 - rise of the “ man of peace“ from the East = Antichrist - the most powerful, popular, charismatic and influential leader of all time. Many miracles will be attributed to him. He will imitate Jesus in every conceivable way. Don`t trust „pope“ Francis = the False Prophet - will seem to rise from the dead - will unite all Christian Churches and all Religions as one. One World Religion = the seat of the Antichrist. Benedict XVI is the last true pope - will be accused of a crime of which he is totally innocent. "Arab uprising will spark global unrest - Italy will trigger fall out" "The time for the schism in the Church is almost here and you must get prepared now" The Book of Truth.
The environment they were able to create really stood out and aided in the mood of the series. She and the art team really nailed it. You dont really get to see pink and green/blue stand out in a lot of movies

"Sang-woo thinks he came all the way here because he worked for it and because he's smart. Gi-un thinks the opposite, that it was the others who helped him cross the bridge. Winners exist because of the losers. Gi-un learned that from experience. But Sang-woo thinks he can only win by turning others into losers. I think the difference in beliefs is what makes this show stand out from other survival game shows."
i’ve always had the mindset of gi-hun’s character, now people will say how do you know if you are never in that situation and its cause its always been in me to be a good person as well as wanting to be a good person, deep down i always wanted to be a hero and have super powers, i really relate to gi-hun’s idea of teamwork in that moment rather than just using people to climb up the ladder, i know someone that will definitely agree with sang-woo’s idea but i am not friends with this person because we both have different morals
@@banewade9579 I wouldn't say "big" but memorable enough. The ones I personally know would be: The Running Man and The Long Mile (first one an actual movie, second one a book, both by Richard Bachmann AKA Stephen King), The Hunger Games and Japan's Battle Royale. I think there's a few more for sure. And if you want to scrap the bottom of the barrel, there are ancient traditions of survival games in history, like the Aztec's Flower Wars and the Calcio Storico (which is one of the origins of modern day soccer). IMHO every time a society starts to face excessive income differences or class conflict, a survival game narrative will inevitably rise.
The director seems very friendly and understandable, probably that's why most of the new actors were even doing great because they were full confident and had no pressure.
Yeah. He was really passionate about the script, he wrote it over 10 years ago, so I guess he was just really on board with making it perfect so he was happy to spend time discussing it and encouraging the actors. Led to a great show so clearly he did a great job.
The new actors actually did have a lot of pressure. The actress who played sae byeok said she cried so much on set because she felt that her acting wasn’t good enough (it was her first time acting). Fortunately, the other older actors and directors encouraged her.
I love how Gi-Hun is written and performed. Most protagonists of shows are either too plasticy perfect, inconsistent or flat out unlikeable period. From the first scene with him I was like 🤨 but the writing and actor made him such a lovably realistic and well rounded character.
I think the realism is what gives the show its edge. Every line of dialogue, every scene, every character interaction is totally plausable, totally beleivable and you can really imagine a real person acting that way under those conditions.
Whoever believes in the Lord Jesus Christ shall not perish but have everlasting life. Bible says in Romans 10:9 that whoever believes in the Lord Jesus Christ shall not perish and whoever accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior shall be saved repent God bless you Jesus loves you Jesus is returning and he will judge the living and the dead repent God bless
I’m just hoping the actor that played the man who betrayed Ali isn’t dealing with too much hate. I know there are a LOT of weirdos and delusional people out there who think it’s real and decide to bully the actors relentlessly
@@azinoodhomi4419 absolutely! Threatening to kill her and her kids over a fictional setting where a fictional character gets killed? Theres been way worse in games and movies
She looks so proud of her work and happy for the result (and the recognition for sure), as she should! She did an amazing job and honestly the art direction is probably one of the best things of the show! It's really what sets it apart from other similar battle royale style shows.

The fact that the writer/director wanted to cast people "who are not as well known", and how successful this show is in the west, shows that you don't need big-name, globally popular actors to make a good movie/show, you need good directors and actors that can play their role really well.
JJ is a big name is SK but many others are not as well know, for some Squid Game is their first or second acting job. For example Deok-Su's actor, the gangster guy, he worked at LG for years and then pursued acting. Sae-Byeok's actress, June HoYeon is a popular South korean model but this is her first ever acting job.
Out of all the actors/actresses I felt sang-woo had the most complex feeling. Like he thrived to win but also it was so mixed. The actor really played him well.
Agree. His character is complex, I like his whole acting. People hate him means he perform his role well. Even I hate him when I see sae byeok death. I think I didn't hate anyone this much before. He is an underrated actor.
Agree! He got so complex feeling because he is the smartest. He realized much quicker and deeper than Gi-hun that he will eventually kill everyone else when he chose to re-join the game. He tried so hard to restrain from his emotions and feelings. That's why Ali's death broke him the most as Ali is the perfect angelic figure that is everything opposite to him. It's like, even though Ali, who is not smart and with lowest social status, chose to be hardworking and kind. That earns Sang-woo's respect and envy while he tried to cut off human feelings. Eventually Sang-woo killed him and condemned himself as the definite evil in his mind.
This man is such a fucking genius and the art director is truly just absolutely insane for how brilliant she is. I want them to sweep awards, this show and the writing was so fucking heavy and so real with its example of capitalism and how money can change everything and absolutely nothing. truly just brilliant all around. yeah the VIP lounge intrigued me the most. Especially considering how there were painted men and women used as furniture who really blended in with the entire environment.
Yes, VIP lounge was amazing but botched by VIP actors. I don't wanna be mean since even the best actors have horrible performances sometimes but they were the weakest links. Which is sad because they had their worse on an unexpected hit! We were supposed to detest the VIP instead it was cringe to the point it was unwatchable and distracting. You can see how brilliant Lee Jeung Jae here as an actor, he’s not someone who just reads his script, act and call it a day. He embodies his character and integrate ideas with the director to build up his stand as the main protagonist.
That's really the true testament of gifted actors, when they know their characters so well they integrate their own instincts into it. Joaquin Phoenix basically directed himself on Joker as well.
@@freesuckerMCR Lee Jung Jae dropped 33 lbs (15 kg) for a movie role and stayed up for 48 hours straight just so he could feel more anxious in a scene. So yeah, he's definitely very similar to Joaquin. It would be really cool if he won an Emmy for his acting in Squid Game.

I dont see anyone talking about this but I think sangwoo’s character was actually the most realistic for the plot of the story. The years of failure he’s had regarding money is the main driving factor in him wanting to win the game. He wants to be successful for once in the gamble he’s made in his life. He does everything to win that money, but in the end he couldn’t kill gi-hun because he came from a time before all sangwoos money failures began.
Years of failure? We don't get very much information on Sang-Woo's troubles but from what we can tell he was a successful businessman who decided to defraud the company he work for and bet it all on options - and lost. He was only in there in the first place because he let greed get the best of him.
SPOILERS*** I interpreted it a different way. Given the suicide attempt and the last fight scene, I felt that he would have killed Gi-hun but what he was not willing to do is go on living without the money and pay for his mistakes.

The show was very philosophical. Lots of hidden messages everywhere. I’m glad the art director had a a pot light because visual artist aren’t recognized too often even though their finished work is always the most recognized.
Its honestly sad that a lot of people didnt understand how realistic and deep this whole series was. I saw a lot of people who watched this just cause it was the "trend" and a lot of comments about how they didnt like the ending cause their favorite characters died. instead of understanding the characters they blamed the other characters. All of them are well-mannered and so enthusiastic about the show. The director and creative head can talk all day if given a chance to, so wholesome and articulate.
The themes that this show presents is really thought provoking: Is self preservation selfish? Is it morally wrong to sacrifice a stranger for family? Is it morally wrong to sacrifice family for a stranger?
Well in real life this happens all the time. Do you endure hardship so that others may be freer, better, or safer? Sometimes you make these sacrifices without the other party even knowing. Sometimes you sacrifice but it is still not enough.
id ever go so far as to say the thing that overarches all of those is the simple fact that those funding and watching the games are ultimately the ones forcing them to choose between these things. those rich people could have easily helped them but instead, they funded a ridiculously expensive game on a private island where they turned the poor against each other and looked down on all of them laughing and betting the whole time. it’s just a more graphic representation of what already happened everyday i think it’s important to remember that the moral burden shouldn’t have been on the players, but the gamemakers themselves
I’m so happy for the director . After years of trying to get a studio for this concept of a show Netflix gave him an opportunity and his series was a hit. Just shows you that you should never give up on your dreams
It's not about "never giving up". The whole point of "Squid Game" is trying to survive in a capitalist's society where most struggle but only a few get through. Not because of hard work, but because of LUCK. He had to go through 10 years of rejection and struggle because the industry wants something that's profitable to them. It don't matter the hard work or talent. So many talented writers go unnoticed because of this. That was the whole point of squid game and he happen to just "win" his own version of it. Don't praise him for "never giving up" , praise him for being a good writer and director. Because no one should be resorted to that treatment.
@who cares Then you missed the whole message of squid game. Many writers “didn’t give up” but how many of them are actually making it? You can only cling onto your passion for so long, but you still got to support yourself. He had to sell his laptop to get. The ones at the TOP just see you as a means for profit. Meanwhile mediocre/bad scripts get their breakthrough constantly. Not because of hard work, but because the industry finds it more profitable
The director clearly chose for her to be there along with the two big-name actors. You're right, she is one of the main reasons the show is so watchable and resonant.
My wife won't normally watch anything that has subtitles, but she was glued to this show. We binged it in a few days. Everything was first class. The writing, the acting, the directing, the cinematography, the lighting, the sound design, the art direction and production. Everything was just so damn good. I know people complain about the VIPs, but you're supposed to hate them and they made that easy enough. A great show. Curious to see if the writer/director has more story to tell.
Uajrh 1 it really isn’t though way better than others I’ve heard and the subtitles for English are so messed up it’s like you are watching a different show
@STORY your account was made today, period. It says that in the about page. And what does being Korean have to do with making new accounts? Unless there’s something missing I don’t get because I’m not from Korea, if that’s the case please inform me.
@STORY Oh, my apologies. There’s just been so many thieves and I’m sorta keeping my eyes peeled for any. I’m sorry that you got into this, this was my fault. I should’ve asked you for your part of the story. I hope you are able to forgive me.
Thats true. I watched countless korean dramas and it’s incredibly rare to have a foreigner in them whos acting doesn‘t bother the atmosphere. He did great!
@@duckduck2973 it was written 10 something years ago and korean movie studios rejected it back then, good thing it was rejected tho and made it a series, and was picked up by netflix. If this was released 10 years ago i dont think it would have been as popular as it is now
I think the most realistic character in squid game are Sangwoo, Ali and Gihun. Sangwoo represent people who is smart but still can fail in life. Ali is that person who is always willing to help and kind but people around him will use that kindness to backstab him just like how people said that in this cruel world we dont need to be too kind coz people will take advantage of us. Lastly, Gihun represent a person who isnt perfect and street smart but despite his imperfection as a human, a son or as a father, he still had humanity in him and you see how his character develops per episode same as the other characters as well. Btw after watching SG, i watch Gihun's movie 'Deliver us from evil' and im shookttttttttt
A line that really stood out to me was when Sang-Woo said that "I'm not alive because of others, i'm alive because i tried my damn hardest to stay alive!" it really summed up his ideology. What an amazing show!!!
I love the contrast between Sang-Woo and Ali so much, because it shows how circumstances effect how you react to the same situation. A person like Ali, who has been watching people work hard, and working hard himself, his whole life for peanuts, cannot view poverty the same way as Sang-Woo. Sang-Woo knows what it feels like to be comfortable, and his financial state is purely a result of bad luck and poor decisions. even though he doesn't have disposable income like he used to, something like bus fare is a natural part of life, and has to be budgeted in. Ali can walk, because bus fare is another significant debt, and physical discomfort as a result of your financial situation is a natural way of life. to Sang-Woo, walking because you can't afford the bus is unimaginable, because his perception of poverty is so different than Ali's.
This is a good analysis but I think a lot could be added to it by considering that Sang-Woo originally came from a very poor neighbourhood himself, tried and failed to succeed in a capitalist society, and ultimately committed suicide because of it. He too is a victim of capitalism, in a different way than Ali is.
Nah Ali was also the most innocent character along with those two girls. I’d argue even more innocent. He saved Gi Hun’s life in the very first game, he didn’t do anything unethical to make money before he volunteered for the games, and he didn’t directly kill anyone before he volunteered for the games.
@@Bettersucksaul I mean yes but his naivety was a result of his exploitation. both the facts that sang woo had to kill him to save himself and sang woo is solely responsible for his death can coexist.
THIS is commitment to craft... building a true masterpiece. No egos, no Hollywood-suit-formulas catering to the lowest common denominator. Thank you KOREA!!
it's strange how this rarely happens, look at the success of game of thrones seasons 1-4, as soon as they started to water down the intricate and well thought out plot for idiotic action scenes the literally made no sense, a lot of people stopped watching
I was so damn impressed by this whole show. The writing, the acting, the decor. I fell in love with the pastel stair case right away, and I loved seeing it whenever it came on. These people really know how to act, and they’re not afraid to be animated or “ugly” and that makes the whole difference. Especially Il-nam and the “”crazy”” woman (sorry I forgot her name)

not only did the art and set designs truly make the film, the ACTING was PHENOMENAL. hearing the director say he wanted less-known actors and actresses is mind blowing to me. like these people are amazing and they aren’t well known. HOW are they not well known??
Maybe most weren’t well-known yet, but like others have commented, there are some big names in the show. The guy at the metro station with the flipping game, for example, is one of the biggest actors in South Korea. Might have noticed him from Train to Busan
Only gi hun aka lee jung jae n lee byung hun is the one who famous , the rest r not a well known actors ...even lee jung jae r not that popular compare to jung woo sung or ha jung woo, but this series made him super big
@Allthefuns I remember him acting as Yi Ji Ran from Six Flying Dragon. It was a minor role but memorable. His face was becoming more familiar in the late squid game episodes (when his facial hair shows).
SPOILERS, and these are my thoughts on why Gi-Hun was a perfect protagonist In between the games, gihun showed his true nature by caring for those around him and having a positive spirit. He took care of Il-nam during his fever and worried for the old man’s health and kept an eye out for Sae-byeok. My assumption is he saw the old man as his mother and - near the end - Sae-byeok as his daughter and we get a good look of the type of person he was BEFORE he was drowning in debt. The one thing that inhibits him from being a good person is his debt and the helplessness that comes with it. Which explains why he didn’t know (or care) about his mother’s health and we only see him act Good when he has a decent amount of money to spend. Also, when he is struggling internally during the marble episode while going against Il-nam, acknowledging that he is going to have to lie to this old man to have ANY chance of winning the game. We can argue that he could still be compassionate without money, but him losing his job 10 years ago and witnessing the death of his friend caused a domino effect in his life that lead him to where he is at the beginning of the series: Divorced, broke, suffering from a mental illness, and doing anything to survive. The only exception is he will never take another life. He’s not perfect but that’s what makes him so believable.
I gotta tell you. When Sae-byeok died, I was heart broken. I had so much hope for him getting her through it. I didn’t realize throughout there could only be one winner though.
wow, hearing the director/writer and art director talk about how they constructed the scenes is amazing. and hearing the actors talk about how portrayed those warring ideas of morality is incredible too. hope they make a part 2 of this to continue about the process!!
I’m glad he made the choice of obtaining not well known actors. ..sometimes people watch movies because they have a favorite actor. This way we see such a great talent out there.
@@MegaCocobunny he means for the other cast members, the director knew immediately who he wanted as gihun and sangwoo, but chose relatively unknown actors for saebyok, ali, and ilnam
The way the series mixed comedy with such dark scenes really is something that’s hard to achieve, mostly because you don’t want to accidentally make it seem too humorous or too dark, not to mention the entire cast is just amazing. Absolutely. I was consistently and constantly impressed by the stellar cinematography. It felt like I was part of an involved experience.

True facts. I've enjoyed the explanation of the set designs, more than the actual back stories.
I like how many deaths are foreshadowed in earlier scenes
1) Ali stole money from his boss, he died having the marbles stolen from him by Sang-woo
2) Sang-woo tried to kill himself in a baththub, he died drenched in rain and sucessfully killing himself
3) Sae-byeok threatened the guy with her knife pressed against his neck, she died being stab in the neck on the same spot
4) Gangster Deok-su escaped jumping into the water off a bridge, he died falling to his death in the glass bridge
5) Added after suggestion: Jun-ho killed one of the soldiers and threw him into the water, he died (maybe) and fell in the water

You go into the show fully expecting to watch something messed-up because you know it's a survival game where people are killed, but the dissonance caused by the colorful and childlike aesthetics is what makes it all the more unsettling; it's constantly screaming at you, "For the ones in charge, this is just entertainment." Lee Jung-Jae is 48.

I thought this coffee scene is a lot expressing 😂
But I can see why didn't the makers retake that scene and kept the ad-lipped one
That ad-lib was perfect because it went right with the character and what we saw of him throughout the series. A bit of a big mess, but genuine kindness mixed in there at times

SO TRUE she's so creative and talented ❤️
The environment they were able to create really stood out and aided in the mood of the series. She and the art team really nailed it. You dont really get to see pink and green/blue stand out in a lot of movies
Why is she underrated? She is on the panel I would say she is getting her props.

!!!!
i’ve always had the mindset of gi-hun’s character, now people will say how do you know if you are never in that situation and its cause its always been in me to be a good person as well as wanting to be a good person, deep down i always wanted to be a hero and have super powers, i really relate to gi-hun’s idea of teamwork in that moment rather than just using people to climb up the ladder, i know someone that will definitely agree with sang-woo’s idea but i am not friends with this person because we both have different morals
Are survival game shows really a big genre? I cant think of any others
@@banewade9579 Life itself is a survival game.
IMHO every time a society starts to face excessive income differences or class conflict, a survival game narrative will inevitably rise.

yeah, Gi Hun was easily one of my favourite protagonists of all time. He was flawed but a good person and he wasn’t some perfect kinda guy
I think the realism is what gives the show its edge. Every line of dialogue, every scene, every character interaction is totally plausable, totally beleivable and you can really imagine a real person acting that way under those conditions.

The fact that the writer/director wanted to cast people "who are not as well known", and how successful this show is in the west, shows that you don't need big-name, globally popular actors to make a good movie/show, you need good directors and actors that can play their role really well.

Yeah, he was a really interesting character
I really like sang woo

He does everything to win that money, but in the end he couldn’t kill gi-hun because he came from a time before all sangwoos money failures began.

The themes that this show presents is really thought provoking: Is self preservation selfish? Is it morally wrong to sacrifice a stranger for family? Is it morally wrong to sacrifice family for a stranger?
Illusion of choice was my favorite theme presented !
Well in real life this happens all the time. Do you endure hardship so that others may be freer, better, or safer? Sometimes you make these sacrifices without the other party even knowing. Sometimes you sacrifice but it is still not enough.
id ever go so far as to say the thing that overarches all of those is the simple fact that those funding and watching the games are ultimately the ones forcing them to choose between these things. those rich people could have easily helped them but instead, they funded a ridiculously expensive game on a private island where they turned the poor against each other and looked down on all of them laughing and betting the whole time. it’s just a more graphic representation of what already happened everyday

No, it just shows you how most studios don't know what talent is.
The art director has so much personality. No wonder her work is so detailed and fun. I wonder what else she's worked on
I love the contrast between Sang-Woo and Ali so much, because it shows how circumstances effect how you react to the same situation. Ali can walk, because bus fare is another significant debt, and physical discomfort as a result of your financial situation is a natural way of life. to Sang-Woo, walking because you can't afford the bus is unimaginable, because his perception of poverty is so different than Ali's.
also from a pure numbers perspective, Ali is way richer than Sang Woo lol
Ali was an international student from India majoring in acting. He was given the equal chance to act on Korean cunemas
Then Sang-Woo betrayed Ali
This is a good analysis but I think a lot could be added to it by considering that Sang-Woo originally came from a very poor neighbourhood himself, tried and failed to succeed in a capitalist society, and ultimately committed suicide because of it. He too is a victim of capitalism, in a different way than Ali is.
I thought he was one of the most interesting characters because his character arc really shows that the promises of capitalism are false ones.
How adorable is this director? Calling the actress a "gift from god" is the sweetest thing oh mai gawd!
Nah Ali was also the most innocent character along with those two girls. I’d argue even more innocent. He saved Gi Hun’s life in the very first game, he didn’t do anything unethical to make money before he volunteered for the games, and he didn’t directly kill anyone before he volunteered for the games.
Yeah but your haole braddah was naive and bugga got snapped so not cool
Yep, his naivety was what killed him in the end
@@Bettersucksaul I mean yes but his naivety was a result of his exploitation. both the facts that sang woo had to kill him to save himself and sang woo is solely responsible for his death can coexist.
@@justinjones2926 k
He did steal money or jewelry and left a man to die, exactly what sang-woo did to him
ali's actor was really incredible, he made me care for his character to the point where (SPOILER) i was bawling my eyes out when sangwoo betrayed him.

"We wanted to let the characters form that bond, but then just rip it apart." well it worked like a charm and my heart was destroyed 12/10
Many characters are simultaneously the worst and the best. Like the crazy woman XD.
The director showed how should a real leader looks like. He listens.
I don’t know why but I read leader as ladder
@@alan_decker and now you have written 'read' as 'red'
@@alan_decker Because you read subtitles in the video talking about a "ladder" approach when they were talking about the bunk beds, brain works in tricky ways.

not only did the art and set designs truly make the film, the ACTING was PHENOMENAL. hearing the director say he wanted less-known actors and actresses is mind blowing to me. like these people are amazing and they aren’t well known. HOW are they not well known??
and ki hoon started as a teen star, usually he plays villains bc of his voice
SPOILERS, and these are my thoughts on why Gi-Hun was a perfect protagonist
In between the games, gihun showed his true nature by caring for those around him and having a positive spirit.
We can argue that he could still be compassionate without money, but him losing his job 10 years ago and witnessing the death of his friend caused a domino effect in his life that lead him to where he is at the beginning of the series:
Divorced, broke, suffering from a mental illness, and doing anything to survive. The only exception is he will never take another life.
He’s not perfect but that’s what makes him so believable.
I gotta tell you. When Sae-byeok died, I was heart broken. I had so much hope for him getting her through it. I didn’t realize throughout there could only be one winner though.
yes gi hun is so precious istg:(

wow, hearing the director/writer and art director talk about how they constructed the scenes is amazing. and hearing the actors talk about how portrayed those warring ideas of morality is incredible too. hope they make a part 2 of this to continue about the process!!
I’m glad he made the choice of obtaining not well known actors. ..sometimes people watch movies because they have a favorite actor. This way we see such a great talent out there.
Fact💯💯💯💯
The two actors are A-list movie stars in Korea, that's why the director was worried about asking Gi-hun to lick the dalgona.
The main actor Lee Jung Jae is very well known and respected. I have seen him in many movies. He’s extremely talented and versatile.
@@MegaCocobunny he means for the other cast members, the director knew immediately who he wanted as gihun and sangwoo, but chose relatively unknown actors for saebyok, ali, and ilnam
Lee Jungjae is at best an A tier actor in Korea, as well as Park Haesoo....
One of the best TV shows I've seen in years. I loved this interview and how humble they are with the gold mine they created.
The way the series mixed comedy with such dark scenes really is something that’s hard to achieve, mostly because you don’t want to accidentally make it seem too humorous or too dark, not to mention the entire cast is just amazing.
Edit: The amount of likes scare me- but thanks! :)
Edit 2: Mother be proud of me I have ppl who agree with me
The clear contrast between the dark eeriness and the light humor was what made the saddest moments even more hard hitting:’(
@YoungGatsu those vip scenes were really painful to watch... even the whole subplot is not really necessary I think...
@YoungGatsu I heard it was really difficult to find good English speaking actors in Korea. Ok im booking a flight to Korea wish me luck!

The art director really set the whole show up for success. There are things in the show that are recognized as being unique to squid game. Like the space with stairs before and after every game, the red light green light set, the costumes for both the players and enforcers (jumpsuits and all). She did such a good job of catching people's attention and recognizing it as something from only squid game
All of Us: Jun-Ho ain’t dead bro, he’s just swimming back to shore that’s all. He’ll be back in season 2.
Also Us:🤞🥺😭😭
He’s not dead for sure. In K dramas, no corpse, not dead. 😀
no corpse = no dead
He was shot in the shoulder my man ain't dead dont do this to me
Where did he go after the show ended? No actions taken by the police as far as we know
Both of them shot each other on the shoulders, if his brother survived then it's likely that Jun Ho also survived.
What a beautiful language. I could listen to Korean like it was music.
