This is the way my West Virginian mother-in-law taught me to bind a quilt 50-some years ago. Once I retired & started quilting seriously, I never saw that method used in any of the videos I watched. Thank you for posting.
Saw this and forgot to write your name down. I refused to stop searching until I found you. I recognized your necklace. Whew that made me calm down, haha. Thank you for teaching this so well.
This is wonderful the regular binding I never could get them to go together without having extra material and buckling in so this is perfect. Thank you for showing it very clear very concise. Love your work.❤️
This is really helpful, with great information and explanations. Not a lot of quilting videos show how to do the binding and this is exactly what I needed. Thank you so much for sharing.
I had to watch about a dozen videos of self-binding techniques before I found yours. Your method is exactly what I wanted. The others mostly were adding 10" to the backing to do a border/binding thing. Not what I wanted for my little mugrugs I'm trying to finish as gifts. So... a Big Thank you!!!
my first visit to your channel! This tutorial covered everything I needed to know to self bind a quilt that needed to get done today! I am ready to machine stitch and feel great about this project!
CORNERS: Fold the pointed corners of the backing fabric over the quilt front to begin this binding. Make a perfect triangle that measures FOUR INCHES ON EACH STRAIGHT SIDE OF THE TRIANGLE. The backing fabric for the binding extends 2 inches beyond the rest of the quilt. The same ratio works on other bindings. ( example: to make a finished 1/2 binding, start with a 1 inch backing binding fabric, then fold a triangle 2 inches on each straight edge.) Raise up the folded miter before stitching it and just whack off the triangle point underneath so it doesn't show. This is a very good tutorial, with all the things we like: no extra talking about the weather etc., just plain, easy to understand instructions and great visuals on how to do this from someone who is an expert, no background music. Thank you.
One of my favorite videos. I watch it before I bind every time and still see something new. Today I realized that as well as I planned this out, I should have thought more about auditioning the backing fabric. I wound up piecing my backing. Ok. But I never thought about the pieced portion showing up as part of the binding. Haha. Oh well!
First time I see a tutorial on the fold-over backing for binding. Very well explained, I will try this on my next quilt. Corners are flattened and mitered so neatly. Thank you for sharing this great video.
I just found you and this tutorial. I loved it, thank you. This is my preferred way to finish my quilts however, I have always had a bit of trouble getting the corners neat & tidy. This is so easy. Thanks again.
Loretta, your instruction helped me finish a bday quilt for my son and daughter in law - one hour before their baby shower. Your clear instructions were wonderful!
Thank you so much for your guidance. I have just made my first quilt and followed your mitre instructions. Perfect. Thank you again. Pauline from Loughborough Leicestershire England
You had me at Dog Ear! Your technique just boosted my confidence so much that I'm no longer afraid to finish Quilts now. I made a Quilt in two days and it's on the bed being used by a very happy Birthday Boy!
So glad you are on TH-cam and sharing your expertise and tips! Miss the classroom, of course but feeling a little less isolated and a bit better informed! Thanks Loretta.
Wow, I have never seen this technique before... And I absolutely love it. My name is Zelda and I have a channel called Zelda Sews. It is a very small channel. I am getting back into quilting along with garment sewing. I subscribed to your channel because I liked your description you had in your bio and I just like the way you present.❤😊❤
Hi Loretta Beautiful demonstration. I went through some fabric and have enough squares to make a 9 square quilt. So, once laid out, I will be in for fabric for the backing. I will use this binding to finish the quilt. Thank you again
I'm so glad I found your site I LOVE your quilt binding technique. The mitered corners make so much sense. I would rather experiment with getting the dog ears correctly with the iron. Then folding the fabric the typical way when doing binding.Only to have to pick it out and try again. !!!!... I seem to have trouble getting the fold wrong at times. But with this technique I really think I will have a better chance of having a beautiful mitered corner. I'm going to give this a try on my next quilt. And watch it step by step, thank you again for this wonderful video.Mery Christmas ❤️🎄🧑🎄
Thank you for the wraparound binding on a quilt video. I needed refresher. My question is about how to adjust the presser foot tension, light or heavy, when using the walking foot and or the dual foot.
This is great method for volume and charity quilting. Will definitely use. One question: I never end up with a square quilt after adding backing. Your method seems to presume that the quilt is square before you measure and cut the fabric for the fold over. How do you make sure your quilt is square, or does that matter with this technique?
Make sure you're using an accurate 1/4" seam when piecing. When measuring for sashing, measure the center of the blocks/quilt, rather than the edge. Things like that will help make sure you're quilt is more square towards the end. Depending on what your quilt looks like, you could also try squaring it off before layering it.
Loved this, especially since I had tried this recently without instructions and my miter corners were a MESS. Can you please show the stitching on the back so we can see how the corners look on the back side. Thx ☮️
Do the center folded edges of the finished MITERED CORNERS need to be hand stitched or machine stitched together? I don't think they do because there are no raw edges inside. If you take a look inside, you can see that the center edges are completely folded. What do you think?
Awesome, love this , and easy too! I wanted to check out your website to see other videos or playlists and there is absolutely nothing there. Did I goof up or is there something I missed?
We do have some other videos up on our channel. Here's the link below. We are also starting a new series where we are posting every Thursday, so this is only the "2nd" one of those. th-cam.com/users/HayesSewingMachineCovideos
I found a plastic tool to mark the miter corner - you then sew it RST - flip - you have a perfectly mitered corner. This might make another great video.
Loretta, I love your videos. I live in Florida so we'll probably never meet face to face but I would love it if you retired to Florida. LOL. Have you ever done a tutorial on squaring up a quilt? I've seen a few, but those are for people who have perfect blocks and perfect seams in their quilt. What if your quilt is less than perfect? How do I square it up? Thanks.
Glad you're enjoying our videos! It depends a little bit on the quilt how you would square it up, but traditionally just use your 6x24 rotary ruler and run it alongside the edge, and trim the excess.
Great tutorial, been looking for something just like this. You were clear and thorough without any excess. The person holding the camera needs a bit more practice keeping things clear and steady, but overall this was a really good video.

I have watched many a video on how to bind a quilt with the backing fabric, This was definitely the best. Thank you!
So glad it helped!

You're welcome, thank you!
Great job! You make it look so easy. I would like to see the back of the quilt where you sewed the binding on.
GREAT video Loretta!! I would also like to learn more about bias and regular straight binding, thanks for your consideration!
Thank you. Great video. Might give this a try.
Thank you Cheryl!
Thank you for the wraparound binding on a quilt video. I needed refresher. My question is about how to adjust the presser foot tension, light or heavy, when using the walking foot and or the dual foot.
It depends on what model machine you have, not all of them have that adjustment available.
Awesome job! Thank you sew much!
Thank you Liz, glad you enjoyed!

Thank you so very much!!!!!😮😊
You're so welcome!
@@HayesSewingMachineCo please show us more. I’ve been making it so much harder than it has to be.
Have you ever used Minky or Fleece to do this ?
You certainly can, however do a wider binding as it's a thicker fabric, and it would be rather bulky if you make it too narrow.
Thank you so much.
You're welcome Sharon!
I found a plastic tool to mark the miter corner - you then sew it RST - flip - you have a perfectly mitered corner. This might make another great video.

Do you happen to have a teach sheet of tips of this binding technique to print?
Sorry we do not
I have a question what would happen if you left the sandwich interior instead of cutting it off?
It would be bulky and not line up well
Could you do this technique with fleece 23:42
No you can't because you can't iron fleece.
Wow, thank you
You're welcome!
Loretta’s nails look fine! I think that was very rude of you to say that she should see a manicurist before doing her videos.
I was actually thinking to myself that she has lovely nails.
Thank you🙏🌈🌺
