There IS a mathematical rule for making dovetails! I've learned it! But a long time ago, so I have to look it up. The most important number is that of the thickness of the board or panel that is getting dovetailed. The rest is relative proportions and to aquire those....the mathematical rule. Your dovetail exercise took me me back some thirty years ago, when I learned to make them. As learning material we used scraps of pine wood. Soft, cheap, easyily maleable. And we we did everything with a ruler, the formula, a pencil, a square, a saw and a chisle. The very old fashioned way. When you know the formula... you can dovetail all measurements! Thickness, width... easy peasy.
really appreciate that you show the real process (warts and all) of trying something new. It would be easy enough to edit all of that out, but it really helps to see that this stuff is hard.
There are a bunch of videos on using magnetic jigs, but yours is the best one I’ve seen. Mainly because you are a complete novice at cutting dovetails. Most all other videos are by people who are already experts at cutting d/t’s. You happily admit you are not, so we get a good demonstration of how helpful these jigs really are. Very good from start to finish.
Your dovetails were extremely well done for a first attempt, even without the Katz-Moses jig (I have one and I love it.). As I live in North Carolina, I was very privileged to recently attend a dovetailing class with Roy Underhill in Pittsboro, NC. Roy of course gave us a lot of great history on dovetails and he emphasized that while we always want them to be "perfect", they certainly do not necessarily have to be so. The folks in times past who made furniture by hand in production did not have the luxury of time to make "perfect" dovetails and yet their furniture is still around a century (or two) later :). You have one of the top woodworking channels on TH-cam and I always look forward to the next edition.
Tamar, enjoyed watching the making of dovetail joints ( handmade) . Katz has invented this great tool plus he is also a great artist in wood working 😊recently saw his inlaid joints it was amazing. Thank you Tamar😊
Thanks for showing the imperfections! I'm starting my first dovetail project this week, and it's nice to have the reminder that imperfect isn't the end of the world. (Especially since I'm just building a box to hold some car jack stands.)
When I use my Katz Moses jig I clamp it to the workpiece, gives me a free hand, particularly when cleaning up, also you can clamp to the front or rear of the workpiece to keep the jig flush, excellent video, I will be making your shooting board soon, best idea I have seen yet, thanks.

I have that same vise. I found I got infinitely better holding power after following the instructions and mounting a piece of wood on each side. It also cut down on the occasional marring. I have access to a Moxon vise now at the shared workshop I go to but I still use the blue one at home and it works almost just as well. Might want to give that a shot before committing to the Moxon vise.

I have always been interested in the many possible way of joining wood together. I believe that what drew me to your channel was what I remember (not always reliable) as the “Impossible wood joint”. That was truly amazing. I now have confidence that I can make dovetail joints with this jig. What a great tool.
I've been doing exactly this but with mortise and tenons. Just cutting and fitting two together over and over trying to get better at it. Practice makes perfect, and eventually I can use it on a Paul Sellers bench stool I want to make.

Wow *applause* great job on both. Been thinking about getting one of those jigs myself. Really enjoy your videos and you have a way of making it all seem more approachable. I will share something that changed how I sawed particularly on something that wasn’t going to be getting a bunch of post assembly sanding. “Whatever direction saw you use, saw away from the face”. Basically if using a pull saw, you would put the face/show side of your piece away from you. Western/push saw, face towards you. Even if it’s a fine saw, it has a tiny bit of grain tear out in the direction it cuts. Helped my sawing and if it helps you as well, awesome. Keep up the great videos
Going to have my brother bring me one of the Katz-Moses Jigs when he comes over at Christmas, but I've been doing my dove-tails for years without and filling in the occasional crack with sawdust(which J. Katz-Moses also teaches you to do, lol...) Great job though Tara...cheers...rr Normandy, France
The more you do them the better you get. I have the Katz-Moses jig also and it does a great job. Also have the David Barron ones as well. You did a great job!
Fred, I see we are of a mind! The flaws I don't despair for the world to see, the little inconsistencies that advertise hand craftsmanship, are not at the glue surfaces. I am ashamed by mis-cuts and gaps. A little less so at overruns down to the gauge line, at least for drawer sides that are usually hidden. I like the slopes to be consistent, and I like the spacing to be fairly even, but I just go with my eye on those. If I cut the tails first, tilting the work in the vise helps as it is easier to judge a vertical as you cut. I don't mind if people use an aid to keep their tool aligned, as I am not above using a block of wood to keep my paring at a right angle, for example. And, any nineteenth century craftsman would use an angled guide block to mitre a moulding stuck on a door stile or sash muntin.
3x3Custom - Tamar oh I am a perfectionist as well. But flaws give it a nice character depends on how you look at what perfectionist point of view is 😉.
A couple weeks ago I went down to NC to take a one-day course on making dovetails with Roy Underhill. We didn't use jigs. One thing he emphasized was that even the most ornate antique furniture had dovetails that did not look perfectly repeated. That's part of the charm of hand-cut dovetails. Let's just say my first ones will make good kindling. Lots of practice.
I have to say, that's a pretty amazing jig! And that's pretty awesome for a first try at dovetails. I wish mine looked that good the first time around....
I am going to combine Jonathan Katz-Moses' dovetail jig with Rob Cosman's method of transferring the tail kerfs to the pin board with his saw-toothed dovetail marking knife. It should be the best of both worlds! Great video, by the way.
Paul Sellers would be proud of you.😊 He'd probably encourage you to ween yourself off of the jigs where possible, though that is a nice jig. I have a Bencrafted Moxon kit I need to turn into a vice someday. Someday. Great demo!
A couple years ago I took a class on how to make a small wooden box -- not with dovetails but with mortise and tennon. The ends were inset so that the sides could have full four sides mortises. The big take home lesson for me is that I can't saw to a line -- I'm very nearsighted so it was hard to see the lines while being far enough away that my head and saw weren't in the same place at the same time. The solution was to make a rough cut with the saw, not cutting to the line but on the waste side if it, and then chiseling to the line. The chisel us a much more accurate tool than a saw, especially an unguided coping saw.
Practice makes perfect... In my own case, using a jig helped me build confidence to where doing them by hand became very easy... Thanks for sharing... Great video

Like driving to a new destination with a GPS. You get there ok, but don't learn the route. Try a few times without and you begin to know your way around , even the back roads. Everything takes time to learn. Your first free-hand effort was actually fantastic Tamar. With a little persistence...

The "handmade" dove tail, as you said, aren't really so bad, and certainly impressive for the first time. besides, I always say that using good and smart tools just to improve the skills. they aren't coming instead. *love this jig :-)

So the moral of the story is........... get and use this Jig.....I get it, and why not, it makes sense for quick, easy and clean dove tails. I like it. Thanks for that.

Like driving to a new destination with a GPS. You get there ok, but don't learn the route. Try a few times without and you begin to know your way around , even the back roads. Everything takes time to learn. Your first free-hand effort was actually fantastic Tamar. With a little persistence...

@@3x3CustomTamar I had my first go at hand cut mortise a tenons recently. Not good, but once together you'd never know! Dovetails are not so forgiving but yours looked pretty good
Richard Wiles ya yeah. My first mortise and tenons were not that great either. But nobody saw it. Ha
The "handmade" dove tail, as you said, aren't really so bad, and certainly impressive for the first time. besides, I always say that using good and smart tools just to improve the skills. they aren't coming instead.
