the outer tie rod is easy enough to remove. I like to remove it as one part, this way you can measure the exact length of the entire unit and put it together as one part same size and you are good to go. No measuring threads.
Very helpful, I have to do this on my 2005 SL500 because I’ve been hearing a clanking noise when I go over a bump at low speeds and I could never figure out where it was coming from but, I finally found it…it’s the driver’s side inner tie rod. The car still drives and tracks very well!
I was trying to remove mine starting with outer tie rod but it wouldn't budge. Having seen this excellent video I can see it's pretty much easy to remove the inner rod, which I have to do anyway. Great video mate!
Only thing I would add to this is to use an extra wrench when (un)tightening the inner tie rod (there's a little bit on the rack side that is flat to accommodate a wrench) as the way you did it you put all that force onto the rack which can damage it. Otherwise very helpful video and thanks for uploading it!
Hi, great and very informative video, I just want to know what kind of symptom you have when it’s got bad inner tie rod? When I did the inspection, the mech told me one side of the inner tie rod is a little bit loose (but he think it should be okay for a year or two before changing). I do have steering vibration start from 50mph and stop at around 68mph, I don’t know if this is related to the tie rod or wheel balancing?
i need to replace both inner tie rods and upper ball joint BUT i have no driving symptoms, the defects were found during an inspection. i can clearly feel play in inner tie rods when i jack it up but dont actually feel any ball joiunt play but to pass inspection and get proper alignment i bought a new upper ball joint anyways as it seems easy to replace with just 3 bolts.
@@TyroneShoolaces-f8eyeah, after the wheel balancing the vibration is gone, I tried to replace the inner tie rod tonight but failed to loosen up the big nut connect the rod and steering rack🫠, soaked with wd40, still nothing, gonna find a lift or do some work out
@@dcfgaragethanks for sharing, I don’t have this symptom yet, but I can feel very minor horizontal movement on that wheel when I jack it up and wiggle it left to right. Now the vibration is gone by rebalancing the wheel. Haha I tried to replace the inner tie rod today but can’t loosen up the ball joint, simply gutentight
It happens. I would soak it in penetrating oil and wait a week and try again. I would not heat it as it may damage the steering rack seal. Also try a pry bar to generate more leverage
When I jack my car up and turn my steering wheel lock to lock it makes a loud pressure/squish noise when i go full lock to the driver side only. Would this be a bad inner tie rod making this noise? Or is my rack likely leaking?
It went away as soon as I replaced and topped up the fluid first time. It sounds like you must have a different or more serious issue if that didn’t solve it, sorry.
I have a 2004 e320 that needs an inner tie rod replaced.... they're (mercedez) saying I need to replace the whole rack is this true? (They were asking if it was sport or 4matic and its not don't know if that matters)
4matoc have different part numbers for the tie rods. They probably told you to replace the rack because they must’ve found a leak. You don’t need to replace everything just because the tie rods are bad

Very informative and exactly what I needed for my future DIY inner tie rod replacement in my W204 :)
The dealer quoted me 720 for the outer tie rods and 295 for alignment. I’m speechless.

😂😂😂 I love your DIY project and how to tighten up properly 😂
Lol!
I like the torque spec "as much as you can... :) in CLS (W219) it is 110 Nm.
Excellent video. Helped me out on my 03 CL55 Amg
Glad it helped!
Thank you. Im about to order mines now. Bad vibration from mines when driving. Its unbearable. Thank you for this video.

God thanks for posting This… very informative
By the way
Do you recomend changing outer too???
Thanks! If it's old, I would replace it too. You'll save on alignment coat if you have to replace it down the road

Some clunks when turning the wheel lock to lock

Your German joke was kinda funny lol
Lol!
Damn, good video!!
Thank you!!!
I thought some sort of lube was placed in the boot. Am I mistaken?
Never seen it
How on earth did you remove the inner so easily? I can't get it off no matter how much I put force into it

Made that look far more difficult than it is ahame😮😮

You need to top up/replace your steering fluid. I had the same problem with my SLK. I thought my steering rack was shot, but it just needed some love.
@@rockstarpeteuk I replaced the fluid about five times now and bled the system for hours/days. Was your slk making the squish noise only on one side?
Yes, just drivers side on full lock.
@@rockstarpeteuk did it go away eventually? If so could you tell me what you did because this is driving me crazy.

You didn’t give the wheels a jiggle after. We need to know lol
Sorry :-(
You didn't shake the tire to show the different after new inner tire rods ends were installed
