(NSMBW) Getting infinite lives TJC [TAS]

  • This week's video isn't about a level, but interesting nonetheless !
    I use TAS to get infinite lives while following the TJC rules
    I needed to find such a strat, because the next levels are gonna be very, very lives costly. It was fun trying to save lives, but this is also more convenient, as I don't have to worry about running out of lives in the middle of the level.
    Therefore, Im going to assume that I can get to 90 lives whenever I want, which I hope should be enough for other levels.
    Also, I think there might be an even more precise infinite lives trick: do that same thing but without a wall, instead have another 2 players doing the same trick in order to send the shell back and forth.

    At least now the characters no longer have to lose all their lives at the end of the level in order to reset their lives counter

    This is great news. I was afraid the sheer number of deaths required would become prohibitive. It sounds like the timer will potentially be more of a problem, then.

    As wacky as Lives management is as a concept, it's better that you don't get stuck because you only have 20 to work with in a stage.

      Well if you run out of lives in a level, as long as 1 player dies or beats it with 1 life left, they come back with +5 lives and +1 continue

      though you never know when a level might need a character to die like 90 times

      When you run out of lives, you don't spawn anymore for the rest of the level (unless 100 coins are collected, which gives all players a 1up), then you use a Continue once you reach the map screen again, which gives you five more lives. However, Continues are limited (though I don't know what the limit is), and when you use too many, you get a Game Over.

    At least the rest of the challenge is not gonna rely on hoping that levels need less than 5 deaths per character

    Pardon me since I asked this ealier, but I really want to know: Is it possible to make throwing an option? I don't know if the TAS software would allow it, but what if there's a workaround? Is it viable to bind the motion shake action to an unused button on the controller in another piece of software that you can run with the TAS?

      It is possible to input shaking in the emulator, but I don't allow it for this challenge to make it more interesting

      I'm pretty sure all motion controls are banned otherwise he could shake to pop players out of their bubbles.

      A lot of the levels' obstacles could be much more easily cleared if the players can pick each other up, it's really amazing what has been done without even motion controls here!

    guys this is another alternate timeline so we have 4 now inf lifes + normal exit normal lives+normal exit(canon) inf lives+secret exit and normal lives + normal exit

    Honstly having to work with 5 lives for each character seemed like a micro challenge added onto the rest of the challengess but if this will be useful for stages that would require more then 20 lives.

    It could probably be more efficient if you just used the 99-life player to help another player reach 99, then you could rinse and repeat and you would be able to end with each player having 98 lives (granted it doesn't really matter for this challenge because it would be pretty difficult to lose 99 lives before time was up). Cool discovery though!

      it's basically required to do this unless you wanna do it without any continues
      if the most optimal path is possible (which I doubt), you would only need about 20 lives for each character, since all of them die at least once in every single level

    Honestly I don't know how to feel about this
    Personally I think it's more interesting for each character to have 5 lives and see how the save file turns out without grinding infinite lives

      It is interesting to have only 5 lives, but I'd rather do that than be faced with an impossible level because I ran out of lives

      If I had to guess, funky hitbox differences between a moving and stationary shell and, as evidenced by the little wiggle, very precise management of position. It is a TAS after all.

      1. Toad kicks the shell towards the pipe
      2. The shell bounces back
      3. Luigi lands on the shell, stopping it before it kills Toad
      4. Repeat

      most of the levels in every world 1 spawn you on grass with very few blocks nearby
      but if you change the rules to accommodate for that it could be interesting

      I've already tackled NSMBW without ground, but I allowed sprites (things that move) because they wouldn't be made out of ground in Mario Maker, doing it while outright avoiding certain textures could be interesting so I might tackle it.

    I'm sorry if you aren't allowed to do this because of rules and whatnot (haven't caught up to that), but can't you force everyone to go into a bubble to spare lives? I used to play NSMBW and having everyone go into a bubble by pressing the A button makes you 'fail' the level without actually losing any lives. The game just kinda goes like "bruh" and then forces you out of the level.

      Indeed, it's not allowed because of the rules. Basically it would allow an infinite height exploit which ruins the challenge

    Why not just bubble out?, it's much faster, plus you can get everyone to 99 lives
