      I was just looking on eBay for another one, I had some idea's for a new build. That is a great price, most of what I found was in the $60-$80 mark. I have so many models to build now that I really shouldnt do another one of these. Thanks for the compliments and also for leaving the comment.

    Well after much wrangling and watching your video several dozen times, I've completed my New River Mining model using your tips and suggestions in this video. I'd say that without your video the chances of me actually getting the model built correctly would have been less than 50%. The rust painting tips and extra walkways and steps really jumped this model up to something special. Thanks Mike.

    • @ModelerManMike
      @ModelerManMike  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, first, thank you so much for reporting back and letting me know this video was helpful. It really does let me know that the time spent actually does help someone with their own building and tips, so for that, thank you! Would be really cool to see pictures of your model, if you have a facebook or somewhere to see them online would be neat if you would like to share that. I am sure after watching it so many times, your sick of hearing this ol guys voice :) Good to hear, thank you again for commenting.

      ModelerManMike........well to be honest I turned off the music and voice several times and just watched the video of your assembling the model. Cornerstone doesn’t give very good instructions on some of their models, so your video was a blessing. I really appreciated the painting and weathering tips, have gotten many comments from family and friends on the final model. Adding the walkways and realigning the steps using the Tichy Train items really upped the quality of the model. It was fun. I’m not on Facebook or Twitter but if you have an email address, I can send some pics there. Thanks again.

    Boy, you have some amazing ideas. I like that you talk through it. There was a kid who was a TH-cam Modeler but he worked in the dark and didn't speak and worked almost off camera so you could see anything. I had to tell him that he needed to change things up because he wasn't helping anyone.
    I work in N Scale and most of the models instructions are nothing, you have to guess what is happening. So if see something wrong I will speak up but I will not be an ass, but who knows my Marine background might kick in.
    Thank you for a very good show and ideas.

    That's a great how-to, Mike. What I really like is that this is not a contest model, nor does it have to be. If a couple of pieces aren't quite straight or a glue dot is bigger then you'd want it, given a choice, it doesn't matter; not if it's given a good paint and weathering job, and has some extra details to make it stand out. In the end you have a stand-out model that will have visitors goggling and saying "THAT's the Walthers kit?!"
    I might add that I've done two of these kits for other people's layouts, and they really lend themselves to kitbashing and rearranging to suit one's needs.
    A big thumbs up!

    • @ModelerManMike
      @ModelerManMike  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the comments Camium, appreciate the feedback and the time spent of course. You seem to be making the rounds around the channel video's here, I appreciate that, good to know someone is watching them!
      The compliments are appreciated of course, and yes, I do have some larger than need be glue dots :) Video and modeling together make for a big job, and really and truly, I am without a doubt lazy and many times dont pay to much attention to the "mishaps" that I encounter, I could spend the extra time, but in all, once its placed the average person really doesnt see that stuff.
      Over all, I do have an opinion to share, I really enjoy building kits and scratch building of course, it seems though, and I have run into this more so on this TH-cam Channel more than anywhere is that there are concerns of many people "recognizing" models on someones layout. Many feel the need to change kits so they are not recognized as they kit they are by bashing or otherwise changing them up so the model railroaders have a hard time discerning what kit it is. This in my opinion and over all modeling for the hobby for me is not at all a concern. Many of my models (kits) are built the way they were designed, I feel that they have done a great job in the replication process of these models and for my railroad, I really dont mind have kits that people recognize.
      Its really amazing the thought process behind so many people building and sharing on the web, so many on youtube and the comments that I have had. So many variations in thought behind building, its really a delight to read and talk to other builders and see how they do things, it is so vast the opinions of specific tasks and modeling technique, I have learned so much.
      Sorry so wordy, just thought I would throw a bit of that out there, thanks again for taking the time to comment and watch the video's.
      Mike

    Mike, allow me to say that you, sir, are not just a superb modeler but an overwhelmingly fine American artist with a nonpareil ability to recreate on a small scale fine life like detailing. Your buildings are worthy of being shown in a museum or gallery. We neither acknowledge nor congratulate enough the men (& those precious few women here) who calmly exhibit really great work such as this...Thanks.

      ModelerManMike
      Thank you, sir, however, given my age, given some physical impairment (i.e. with surgery on my lower back in the offing - foolheartily doing my own stunts - now you know what I do for a living in large measure, lol!) & with only so much time left to devote to my craft and the life/work as a writer I must leave behind to both progeny and the American people, I won't be able to really model a dream layout much or if at all anymore. I'll only be able to buy models place 'em on my desk & stare & dream! When I was a child my dad brought home HO B & O F-5s or 6s A's & B's for my kid brother & me. LOL, my little brother and I used to sleep with our locomotives! Dad bought cork bed & Atlas track & we laid down ovoids on plywood...with a few switches in the center to approximate a yard. Dad worked as a gandy dancer on the railroads (Pennsy, I think & NY Central: B&O was terribly segregated) to support us and his operatic singing wife while he attended colleges. A few years after I was born in Baltimore, on Sundays in the mornings, one would see three guys: one big, tall muscular proudly distinguished looking black man (a briar pipe in his mouth) & his too little boys by his side standing at trackside by the passenger yard with engineers & brake men we came to know waving at us! All the while Dad explaining what he knew of the calculus of inertia, steam pressure, pistons, the counterweights on drivers, electrical fields, etc. while T-1s & GG-1s came through. Dad got his doctoral @ Johns Hopkins - an almost super-human feat then - when he noticed that I was becoming a rivet counter [LOL] & could only have models that were finely detailed.. a perfectionist I guess! So that's why I can appreciate yours (& a few others) TREMENDOUS artistry & attention to detail! Please forgive me: I didn't mean to wax biographically 'bout the good old days... sign of aging, I guess...but I am awed by fine work that captures/conveys the beauty, the rust and wear, joys and tristesse of the bygone times through which I lived... the smell of creosote in the ties, sparking as the pantographs snap the catenary lines, the steam lines along the ground, machine oil, rust coats on iron & steel, coal dust & the moth balls stowed in the trunks of passengers @ the Railway Express Agency...Credit where it's due: you're a great artist who captured those times & re-animated those sights, sounds & memories for me & I am moved which IS the imperative of great fine art... & beauty in the mind of beholder... I apologize for this glut of words. Thank you. Goodbye... God be with you... A...(NO)

      With the issues you deal with on a daily basis, I am reading that you are not very mobile that you could very possible build structures right? I personally have not had a layout in years and just build models and this I can do from a chair, its really relaxing for me. I have considered making dioramas with many of my models as well. I think you have several options for being in this hobby and building without a layout. If you enjoy it, you should give that a try. You know, I couldnt help but notice your writing skills, you might consider writing something for our eMag. you can find out more through our website youtubemodelbuilders.com

      PS/ I am mobile, however, I have to force myself to walk or stand when I sit too long... IT'S THE PAIN...Mike, it's damned excruciating... I am looking at March for this long surgery probably around the middle to late in that month... they have to put me in a special contraption with trusses to flip me and even if they must, to go into my Aorta...to do that they have to bring back to LA. (I live by the Pacific, North of the city!) Modeler man, I am all messed up! LOL LOL LOL... laughing helps... believe me... thank you for your kind words, sir... A

      To funny, I used to have this problem a long time ago. It seems cutting the cap as close to the top as possible helps, thats a big one. Second using the thick stuff, purple label is more like a jelly or something. I always tried to use less than I thought I needed. I still get it on me sometimes. Thanks for the comments and your reply!

    "it's just so easy." My friend, you make it look easy but the reality is you have some seriously mad skills! And when you're very good at something, you tend to make things look easy. I've seen this in other walks of life. I watched a couple guys put in new windows of my house and they have been at it so long that they make it look so easy. Keep the videos coming!

    • @ModelerManMike
      @ModelerManMike  11 ปีที่แล้ว

      Truly, its easy, if I can do it anyone can :) This is really just practice, what you see here is the culmination of many mistakes over time, just learn what works and what doesnt. Like the window guys, do it enough and you get where your fast at it! :) You need to add some video's Eric, you know you want to, I check your channel regularly and watch your only video.... :)

      @ModelerManMike  11 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Apples, Thank you for taking the time to comment, thank you for the compliments as well. The Kit in my eyes is just the canvas, what you do with it after its built is what makes a model I think. crazy thought I know but thats the way it is really. The extra's just take an average kit into a new realm.

    Very impressive detailing. If I had your talent and patience, I'd make some of the window panes green and brown in addition to the clear. Along with all of your specific detailing, that emphasizes the old industry of the building(s).

    • @ModelerManMike
      @ModelerManMike  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That would look nice. As so much of this is done in video for these builds, I actually slack a little bit on some of the detail. Some of it I do outside of the video to, however, I did not do what your suggesting here.

      You know, this may not make my layout due to its size and functions. I may put it together in a diorama or something. To answer your question though, no, it just sits on a shelf right now. • @struck2soon
      @struck2soon 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The point I wanted to make is that these things aren't noticeable at all when you do a great weathering and detailing job like you have here. Hey there Mike I enjoyed this video, I am building this model for my wife as she is putting together a mine and is using this model with a couple of others to create an old mine works nearing the end of its tenure. We like the features you put on and will do the same, my wife using the extra bits I got for some of my buildings to accessorise her building. I am a British railway modeller, Linda-Sue being American, wants it to have that American look buying two 4-4-0 locomotives but using the smaller British 4 wheel hoppers to cart the coal. Anyway cheers for that, we subscribed and will watch with interest other videos. Merry Christmas. Guy

      Brian, thanks for the compliments. nice thing about models, you can, if you want work on them more and more. :) I have seen yours, its fine. mine is about 30-40 years old though, yours may not be as old.

      Thanks, Mike. I guess I'll have plenty of time to work on it once I get further along on my layout....

      That's kind of the problem isn't it, so many people don't spend the time on the models due to so much to do on their railroad! :) I have seen your buildings though, you do alright for as much time as you have. One of the reasons I purchased the building set was your recommendation ! that's been over a year ago now I think.

      Yes, I found the City and Industry buildings on ebay for about $75 I think. They are a great deal. I haven't even looked at all the details yet (metal castings). There is so much potential there. I spent some time this evening cleaning up the layout room. I have all the buildings packed away and I think I'm going to get them out and start placing them so I can finalize my track plan.

      I would enjoy seeing them, kinda missed them since you took the old layout down.

      Hey Jean! Thanks for the comment! I appreciate your kind words and taking the time to let me know your thoughts. If you found this commenting easy, I would suggest leaving comments on any model railroading TH-cam video you see, it encourages more to be placed up there! :) Have a great one and check back often ok!

      Thanks for the comments, hope they are helpful. I wish I had decent video's to learn from when I started, you already have a great jump in the model railroad learning curve.

    Mike,
    Great videos. Love your attention to detail. Sure hope you do some craftsman models in the future - I think you will find your talents will really make the wooden models look fabulous.
    Thanks for taking the time to share your work and your techniques. It is truly inspiring.

      Thanks Terry! You know, I have considered a Craftsman kit before, they take so much time though and I think the video would be so long. Not sure if I will get to do one of these but I will surely give it some thought. I really appreciate your feedback and compliments!

      ModelerManMike Well you owe it to yourself to try a small Bar Mills kit one of these days. They are really not a problem to build, and the effects you can create with wood instead of plastic are dramatic. I started with a small tire shed and was hooked immediately. I have only gone back to plastic when I simply have to have a building that I can't bash from a wooden kit.

      Terry Nathan Hey Terry, you wouldnt happen to have the means to record a wood build would you? would love to see some technique. I may have to get on some of these, they are some really nice kits, I am really lazy though, not sure if I could hold out to the end! :)

    • @TerryN323
      @TerryN323 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mike, I don't have the ability to record anything right now. But I know you would be hooked once you did anything in wood. Of course there are a lot of videos and dialogs on the Web about the subject and I will be glad to send some links if you give me your email address.
      You will find that the kits are really just as easy as the plastic kits. The differences come in the painting and finishing stages. Because you can distress wood , and use stains and washes , you just have so much more a bit to naturally age and weather the model.

      @ModelerManMike  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Terry Nathan Sounds good, I have been looking into it for some time. Without a layout though, its really difficult to figure on which kits to buy. I have so many plastic kits now I am pretty sure I am over kill on what I need! Terry, I appreciate your thoughts and comments! If you get to a point where your producing some video's on wood kits, let me know!
