Adding Realistic Details to Vehicles - Model Scenery

  • Adding detail to vehicles can rapidly transform a scene from good to AWESOME! It’s amazing how much adding some dirt and putting a few crates or similar details on the back of vehicles makes to a scene.
    If you’d like to support this channel you can visit my patreon page: / luketowan
    In this tutorial I’ll show you the steps I took to create a fantastic looking detail that you can add to any scene and it will make a great improvement. It’s actually a lot easier than it looks to get really good results.
    The model I’m using is a HO scale Ford Flatbed Truck and I’ve added it to my diorama that I made in Realistic Scenery Volume 6, the crates were made with scale strip wood. If you’d like to download the template I used to build the crates just visit the downloads section of my website:
    bouldercreekrai...
    Don’t forget to check out Micro-Mark as well, that is where I got my ‘Chop-It’ that I use for many different projects. If you use the promo code ‘BOULDER’ you will save 10% of your total order at the checkout.
    Stay tuned for a list of materials as it will be added over the next few days.

    Amazing. I would not be surprised if he said "I wanted to simulate a worn outer tie rod end on the truck...." or "To add a bit of realism this truck's carburetor is set a little rich because he can only get low octane gasoline"

      Fantastic video with lots of great tips.
      Do you ever "bulge" tires (file a flat where the tire contacts the ground and build up a small epoxy bulge on the outer wall)? If so I would love to see your technique.

    • @Dreaded88
      @Dreaded88 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Just save. Little bit at a tine. Buy tools, and equipment, go as you can. Consumables/Perishables come later, and in smaller quantities so they wont go bad before you use them. Use the cheats Luke shows, like using that Thick Paper, and Glue to make parts with, instead of Sheet Styrene.
      Eventually, you'll have a very impressive shop!

    Hey Luke. This reminded me of building model cars when I was a kid. Good times. I don’t think I ever did as nice of a job as you do. One thing I did was heat the tire and push down on the wheel to put a natural belly in the tire. Or give it a full flat. Made it seem like the tire was actually holding up the weigh of the vehicle.

    Another superbly produced video Luke. I was going to say "as good as the professional ones..", however I actually think it is better than most of the professional ones!
    I think I might have done the wood deck weathering slightly differently: the grain actually looked quite good after the first coat of paint, I think I would have dry brushed the paler shades on at that point with perhaps a bit of pale grey as well, then gloss coated, pin wash the plank seams before finishing with Dullcote. Just my own thoughts, your finished result looks great! 👍

    • @vforrevenge595

      he gets paid throught these vids so by definition he is professional as well

    • @struck2soon
      @struck2soon 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Not quite: the bloke is actually an airline pilot,(his profession) and these vids are his hobby. He is self-taught, so another disclaimer to being a "professional". Any way you look at it, he does a bloody good job on these tutorials!

    • @vforrevenge595
      @vforrevenge595 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Amazing transformation! My only tip in making a quick but important upgrade to vehicles is adding license plates to all my cars and trucks. They can be downloaded, scaled down in Illustrator, and they really add a level of realism when applied to the bumpers.

    I used to love modeling when I was younger so there are two sides to me when I watch a video like this; one side says i can't believe the obsessive level of detail on a project like this- and the other side of me thinks that is why I loved modeling so much and wants to get back into it! Thank you for this great inspirational video, I am about to make the red button white!

    I find using the plastic model "racks" as precision paint tool works good. How I make one is by cutting a length of the plastic framework the model parts are attached to, then a lighter heating the plastic rod in the middle till it starts to droop. Start pulling the two ends apart till you get a thread between to two ends. Cut the ends away about an inch or so from the taper at an angle to create a needle like point. It makes a great tool for pinpoint paint application. ( if you experiment with the stretching apart technique you can use the thread for creating wiring, fuel lines, brake lines, fence post wire, etc. Different gauges of plastic rack will give varying thicknesses to your wire)

    This is a fine detailing work, wow! Even not doing such things with my stuff, I find most of the customization that we most see around of the internet quite average, mainly in proportions, but what you do, it's from another world. Seeing how small those crates are compared to your fingernails, it's really impressive how you manage to put the sides together w/o squishing them, and even adding their feet, steady hands. Nice dedication!

    Hi, Luke. i don't know if you'll see this as this vid is pretty old now. I've been watching for years now & used to be an avid scale model maker & a few decent HO railways. Everything's perfect, except,,, as an old truckie I have to say, that, I have never seen a brown truck floor on any truck, old or new. Timber truck beds, in Australia anyway, are made of hard wood, usually tongue & groove, floor boards & age to a grey colour. The head board would be the vehicle colour or white. That's it, love your work. Wish I had the room for another layout. Looking forward to my next fix. cheers

    Really good job, I love the fruit boxes especially.It's amazing how few people do anything with wheeled vehicles on a layout. I weather all my vehicles, add correct individual license plates (I model in O scale narrow gauge) and make sure they don't look like how they came out of the box.I tell people who see my layout and they comment on the vehicles that if nothing else, blast your scale autos with some dullcoat (but masking off the glass) if you don't plan on doing anything like what's in this video.

    Adding details like this makes a BIG difference between something's that okay vs looking VERY realistic and be using on my 1/32nd and 1/36th scale vehicles. Bought the Chop It a few weeks ago using your discount code....makes cutting styrene/wood a lot easier. But as soon as I saw your figure, KNEW he was going to be related to the old 1/72nd scale Airfix aircraft pilots which don't have any legs from the knees down!

    Great video Luke! Really enjoyed it and as usual the tips are just pure gold! Thanks again for posting my Mad Max Interceptor hot wheel model/diorama. I am going to try some these weathering techniques as I have a rat rod hot wheel project in mind. Hopefully get caught up on my other work and give it a go.

      No worries mate 😀 I usually don't do any modeling with Hot Wheels cars because they tend to need a lot of work to make them look good however you are definitely doing a great job with them! Keep up the great work

      Thanks Luke! Yeah it's really cool to "work them over" and really bring out the details. Thanks again for sharing all the great tips on weathering!
