🙏 so true! I think we forget this in life and as a society. Our society is pushing us toward comfort comfort comfort. When the truth is, that just makes us lazy as well as complacent. If we’re uncomfortable, that means we’re pushing ourselves to grow or experience new things. I have not always had this viewpoint, but I promise you that overlanding really got me out of my comfort zone! Thank you for watching and for your comment! I really appreciate it! 😀
@@jaynedavies2757 I, too, was wondering if that front passenger seat moved forward any further, or the back tilted more forward for another inch or two.

67 in a few weeks... disabled... will complete my 9th year living in my 2002 Mazda Protégé on June 5, 2024... with my canine service companion. My front seats recline... I sleep in the driver's seat... Hidden has half of the back seat. No fancy gear. Coolers & ice for food and beverages in the trunk with my food tote... totes for most of my stuff... a hanging bar across the back seat holds cloth bags suspended from shower curtain hooks, which hold shower stuff (towels, loofah, face cloths, etc) and sets of clean clothes for "grab'n go" on shower days at the gym... separate shower tote for hygiene products. Hidden's food and water dishes are on top of her tote in the floor beside her bed space. With Mazda being 22 years-old, she often needs repairs... so traveling away from familiar territory isn't an option. I'm also homeless for three years after my ex-husband took our house on his own, sadly. My time in the rented house is coming to an end, and I have a plan to live in my car temporarily until I have my own house. But yeah don’t confuse comfort with happiness, this quotes motivating me!
Monologe was genius. As a 20 year old homeless dude in my 20s it never entered my mind I was 'homeless" I returned to it time after time until I bought my home near Yellowstone. Not hopeless that 20 years merely are rambling man adventurer that bough on sold several houses between adventures. Toyota motorhomes, tents, grand prixs, tents. Dude… this was amazing. Chills man. The story in the beginning. I went from feeling sorry for the guy that grew up homeless to feeling sorry for all the wealthy people that don’t fully live in the moment! Such a beautiful way to make this video man.
Thank you brother! When I sat down to write the intro, I 100% said to myself, “if this was a Baker Overland film - how would Caleb write it?” I really did, it took me longer than usual to write, but slowing down to do the story justice was what I was aiming for. The guy in the story - my buddy - is one of the coolest guys I know. And I think it all comes from his perspective on life. He’s now a successful professional with great career ahead, and his story means so much to me. Thank you for your kind words bro 👊🏼 It means a ton coming from you! 😄👏🏼🙏🏼 They say imitation is the highest form of flattery - I hope you feel the love bro, because I owe a good chunk of the success of this video to you and your inspiration. 🙏🏼🙌🏼👏🏼😄
A lot of the wealthy end up suffering and making doctors rich as their short lives go. All we can do is make them open their eyes, before it’s too late.
Yep. The mindset. The person who has to do it and the person who chooses to do it are in the same position but the person who has to do it is miserable and the person who chooses to do it is happy about the adventure. The mind can make a heaven of hell and a hell of heaven.
i lived in an old minivan for 3 years straight, age 62 to start. I got around on a bicycle, ate free at the church and the SA mission, lived on the $80 per week sales of my plasma. It's funny how many people "think' that just cause you live in a vehicle, you HAVE to travel a lot. The 24-7 Planet Fitness gym is just $10 per month. I'd move with the birds, twice per year, to avoid heat and cold. I never bothered to have more than a litter pan and pee jars in the van. Never cooked a meal in it. I always just parked near the gym, a college library, wally's, a construction site, a convenience store. I'd use the store's microwave, or the one in the college. I didn't use it much. Ate powdered milk, dried fruit and cereal for breakfast. It's not a bad life, and it got me thru college. I saved my college loans and retired on the way that I invested them.
Right on! WOW what a story! So cool. While at the same time - many think massive debt is the way to go! I’m with you, low or no debt and you’re bound to no one! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 Thank you so much! I really appreciate your support and dropping me a comment as well! 😄🙌🏼
Came for ideas on how to set up my camper shell. Ended up tearing up, remembering living in my mom’s Subaru station wagon when I was young. And eating gas station nachos on thanksgiving one year. Thank you for the memories.

Back in 2013 I wound up homeless in Flagstaff, AZ. It was winter, at 7,000 feet and my dog and I slept in a small Jeep TJ with a soft top. I took off the passenger seat and put it in storage, then put a cooler where the seat was and a plywood board from the cooler to the box I had built just over the rear fenders. My head touched the rear plastic window and my feet touched the dash. I slept with a beanie and wool socks, fully clothed, on layers of moving blankets. A four point blanket and several military surplus wool blankets saved our butts, but it was rough sometimes. It got to 20 F. On nights that it dropped into the mid t4eens I would get a room at Motel 6 with some money a friend sent me. If I'd had your setup I would have been in a mansion! You did a great job with that Jeep.
Wow! What a story! And what a case of perseverance! 💪 I hope all is well for you and that life is smiling on you regardless of where you lay your head! 👊🏼🙌🏼🙏🏼 Thank you for watching and for your comment! I really appreciate it! 😀
I’ve been camping in my Honda Element on the Buffalo river. Popping open the rear hatch and falling asleep listing to the river all night then waking up and pulling up a chair on the river and watching the hawks fly. It’s the happiest I have been in a long time. My main reason for opting to sleep in the Element when I am out was exactly what you said. After a long day of driving I don’t want to setup camp if I get there late, especially in the rain.
That sounds awesome! Ya, a Honda Element is a great vehicle for this! One suggestion, if you ever wanted to take your Element to the next level. Look up Ursa Minor for the Honda Element. Converts the top into a camper top!! I just got this on my Jeep, and man it makes the Jeep like a mansion!! Thank you for watching and for your comment! I really appreciate it! 😀
Some of the best nights/days of my life have been spent in my Honda Element. Unfortunately I'm just a little too tall to really make it work how I'd like it to, so I've upgraded to a long bed Nissan Frontier.
@@smileyguyz Ohhhh Nice! A Nissan Frontier is a solid platform! If you haven’t checked out the channel All Things Overlanding, he has some awesome Nissan content for ya! He’s a good buddy of mine. His name is Fletch. 😊
Did a ground tent for years before I realized "why am I listening to the wind flapping my tent"...."now its pouring on the tent". Finally I tried inside the Jeep one night and never went back. Sleeping in the Jeep is not bad at all. I've set up mine exactly the same except the fridge is on a slider in the rear on my feets right. Yes, remote is key and the deep sleep is awesome! Nice job!
There are many, many retired women and men who have channels and live out of their vans or cars with no roof top tent. Several young people as well. But always enjoy seeing people's set up.
@@ThePrairieChronicles there’s got to be a way! Do the seats fold flat at all? If not, and they are higher than the floor of the rear cargo area, you could build a small set of drawers back there in the cargo area to level out the inside. Never regret an FJ! They are awesome!! 👏🏼 💯
@@ThePrairieChronicles Oh wow! I didn’t realize the housing crisis was so bad in Canada. I was actually born in a little town called White Rock, BC. Lived there until I was about 5-6. But I’ve heard how much foreign money has come in and really made it hard for native Canadians to afford even the most ‘normal’ of houses. The house I grew up in was probably around $100K when we lived there, I think it’s over $1.0M at this point. I love Canada, but indeed times are very tough! I just wish that there were some more practical decisions being made by the government that would help people across the country. Here in California, it’s beautiful … the most amazing state in the US, but the taxes, costs are off the charts. However, it’s the ‘price of admission’ to live here in my view. We’ll stay in CA likely for the rest of our lives - unless our kids grow up and end up far away. Then, we’d likely still keep a home in CA. We were fortunate as a young couple to buy our first home when prices were still decent in CA back after the dot-com bubble in 2003. God bless you 🙏 and many prayers that everything works out for you. 😊

“Don’t confuse comfort with happiness.” That's a wonderful line. Two years ago, I attempted a walk across the United States. I "only" made it 1000 miles instead of the full 2400. But I came back with an amazing lesson on a hot, humid morning in the South. I was already sweaty, smelly, and surrounded by face flies at 10am. I'd been eating gas station food for weeks. Had ripe blisters on my feet. And I had no idea where I'd be sleeping that night. As someone who enjoys salad, beds, AC, and showers, I was desperately uncomfortable - yet that day, I was happier than I'd been in YEARS. That day, I asked myself what was a rather amazing question: "Do I actually know what makes me happy?" In the face of having little of what I want yet feeling quite joyful, I had to admit I did not know what actually makes me happy. We always ASSUME that we know what to chase. But how much of that is programming from our culture? How much of that is just fleeting comfort? I still ENJOY comfort but I no longer confuse it with happiness.
I live as a year round overlander at 67 years old in a homemade camper shell, living on small social security. I think of my setup as half apocalypse and half recreation and having a great time with my sense of freedom. Gonna live it as long as i can. After 07-08 economic downturn i gave up on social norms, not worth chasing anymore.
I grew up in a very outdoorsy, adventurous family, but we didn’t have allot of money. I grew up boat camping on islands, and even on sailboats, camping in the back of a car at an automotive karting event, camping in the sand dunes, camping in the mountains, camping in the forests. We usually didn’t have much we had an old Coleman cooler, a borrowed Coleman lantern, borrowed military surplus sleeping bags from the grandparents, and sometimes we even borrowed the grandparents army surplus mess tent. A lot of time we just slept in the car. Eventually we got a Ford camper van, then allow us to sleep, cook eat and be warm inside the vehicle. I guess that set me up for a life of adventure. Now three years on the road full-time I live out of a Jeep Grand Cherokee, though I recently purchased a tiny little off-road camper trailer just to allow me to carry more gear for full-time off grid travel. I still actually prefer sleeping in the back of the Jeep than I do in my trailer or even in a rooftop tent.
What a story! So cool! Ya, no matter what you’ve got - I just tell everyone to ‘get out there’ and they won’t regret it. I’ll check out your channel this weekend! 😃
Remember Bob Ross the painter - he used to call the accidents he made while painting ‘happy accidents’. It sounds like that’s what happened when you forgot your tent polls! AHHAHA. So awesome that you discovered sleeping in the vehicle the way you did! Thank you for watching and for your comment! I really appreciate it! 😀
My wife and I slept in our van last year on the opening day of trout season in PA. We are in our 70's+. It got cold, now we were in a PA state park on a campsite with an electrical hook up for an RV. We had a small electric heater and she used a blow up mattress in the van. I slept in the front seat laid down. She slept very soundly and I got a decent sleep. We camped for 2 nights and loved our experience. I can see people that live in their cars and travel. You know we made the experience work for us. We have a small camper but what pain in the @$$ that thing can be. You know a lot of times simpler is better. May do that again this April. As it has been pointed out," Don't confuse comfort with happiness".
Oh wow! What a great story! Yes, I think having a more simple set up is always a plus! It allows you to be able to focus more on the experience versus the difficulty of set up and tear down. So awesome that you guys are getting out there! Keep it up as these are the types of memories we want to make, and keep! Thank you for watching and for your comment! I really appreciate it! 😀
😊 thank you so much for the comment, and for the encouragement! It is so true - we don’t need to be comfortable to be happy. I think in some ways the opposite is true. Being challenged and uncomfortable; overcoming obstacles is really something that brings great joy! Cheers! 😃

And here is your video. My husband is also 6 ' 4" so yes this video helped a lot. Thank you so much for sharing. I subscribed and will be watching your videos today to catch up.
Nice set up and jeep. People are shocked when they find out there’s a bed in the back of my vehicle. Best sleep ever…and being able to start the engine and drive away in a split second if that situation ever presents itself and it has = priceless. A long body pillow helps. Be well

I've been car camping for more than 7 years now, and I'm more comfortable sleeping inside than in an outdoor tent. You said it right, a decent night sleep is what someone who drove for hours really needs. Great stuff.
126 year old veteran of the US Moon corps here, I suffer from chronic heartburn after spicy food or orange juice so one day I decided to pack up. I’ve been living on my childhood tricycle for 28 years now. Nothing fancy, the seat goes up and down, I have a cool box on the right stabiliser and bedding on the handle bars. Total freedom, would never go back to living in a horse drawn carriage. I don’t know what I would do with all that room
Absolutely love my times I get to car camp in my 'micro camper' small SUV! Waking up to the birds and nature is the best feeling ❤ And my little dog loves it too!
Yes! There is nothing like waking up to the sound of nature! It’s so awesome - you can’t put a price on that! Wait?? Are you a mermaid?? So awesome! I’ve never had a mermaid comment before! 😊 Thank you for watching and for your comment! I really appreciate it! 😀
I grew up in tents, but have switched to my Chevy Suburban. Rooftop tents need everything to be transferred into them and set up all while dealing with rain here in the PNW. Rooftops are also incredibly heavy, exposed to high winds and cold air. Ground tents can get you killed in Alaska, plus you have the set up and take down issues dealing with moisture and mold. Toyota 4Runners, Chevy Tahoe/Suburban's (2000-2005)and the Jeep Wranglers seem to make the most sense in a world filled with $100,000 4x4's usually loaded with groceries and fertilizer...
Yes! You make some great points! I think my number one thing would be safety as to why I don’t do ground tents often. Your rig sounds awesome! Thank you for watching and for your comment! I really appreciate it! 😀
I chose my 2006 Pathfinder over an Xterra simply because all of the seats fold flat and there is plenty of room to stretch out. Bought it in 2022 with 68k miles for $10k and with good maintenance they are known to surpass 300k miles. So it'll stick around for a while.
Thank you so much! It means a lot to me to hear that. That story about my buddy really hit me - and when I was working on this video I just had to include that! It has really resonated well with so many people! Thank you for watching and for your comment! I really appreciate it! 😀
That comment, "Don't confuse comfort with happiness," is a great quote! I have been living and traveling in my 2019 GMC Savana van for well over two years and amassed thirty thousand miles and adventures with it. I sleep better in my van than when I spend the nights in family homes. I sleep on a Coleman camp cot with a three inch $23 foam padding on top, a blanket to cover the foam and a NEMO 15-degree sleeping bag. I love that I can change my backyard as often as I wish. You brought up a valuable point about having a remote starter in your Jeep. I will have one installed this year. Now, I turn on my camp stove to warm the van's interior. Great video!

Nice video. When I overland, I have a couple of options available. If I'm going to be in one place for a few days, I have a 4P Gazelle tent that I can "glamp" in. But most of the time, I sleep inside my 2019 Subaru Forester. My setup is similar to yours and I love the self contained aspect. I can setup or tear down in a matter of a few minutes. I have come to enjoy sleeping in my car. Being 66yrs old, my body isn't as flexible as it used to be, but I'm still able to get in and out without a lot of drama. I'm always looking at how I set her up and making changes to gear and the layout to make it even better for me. I love this lifestyle and the places I've been and the friends I've made through this.
It sounds like you have a great setup and a great time exploring! I really appreciate you sharing! So awesome that you are getting out there and seeing the country! While I’m a Jeep guy, you’d think that I’d frown on a Subaru … not so! I honestly love just about any type of adventure vehicle, and love to hear how people make them their own with regard to the setup! Cheers! And Happy New Year! Thanks Bob! I really appreciate it! I’m hopeful that some of the techniques and gear that I showcased will help out!! Thank you for watching and for the comment! Cheers! 😃
I did not think any part of it was weird. I’m glad you explain things the way you did. The part about the wind blowing the tent, and the security of being behind a metal lock door is a plus. I like the way you had it all set up. And you were very detailed. Very nice video my friend.
Another way to camp in a Jeep- I always sleep in my JK when our Jeep club goes camping. My tailgate has a Teraflex fold up tabletop that is my kitchen counter and my back bumper is the coffee bar at breakfast. I turned the passenger side into my bed by removing the backseat, laying 2x4s on the rim from side to side to form the rear platform, reclining the passenger seat back (remove headrest) then put a board on top of glovebox handle to top of reclined seat to form the front platform where I put my feet. I lay a 4 inch foldable foam mattress on top across both platforms. All my gear is stored in a wicker toychest underneath the platform. When trail riding, I just stack the 2x4s and board behind the front seats and strap them down. Great video! Will share with my club members! ✌️
Oh wow! Your setup sounds awesome! And creative! 💯 Thank you for sharing this video with your club - I can’t say thank you enough! 🙏 Thank you for watching and for your comment! I really appreciate it! 😀
I have a similar set up and sleep in my jeep when camping. I recommend getting some mosquito net window covers so you can either crack open your windows or fully open them for ventilation and to prevent condensation build up. They also provide decent amount of privacy.
Great point! I actually do have the DeepSleep window screens that I use. But I didn’t showcase them here in this video! Thinking back, I probably should have! Thank you for watching and for your comment! I really appreciate it! 😀
oops! No PortAPotty!. Travelled all over both Canada and US for 14 years (well up to 4 months at a time + off/on) with my 9 year older wife from age 57 - 68. Two different Conversion Vans. Did not off road but parked all over the place, slept well. Did eat but no camping. Great way to begin retirement which is still going on in a much different way as we aged. Nice info presented but we needed the Port A Potty.
HAHAHAH, ya, I’m actually thinking about doing my next video and calling it ‘Bathroom’. 😂 Original huh?!?!? Thank you for watching and for your comment! I really appreciate it! 😀
You can always set up a port a potty outside in a small stand up changing tent These changing tents set up and take down in a few minutes They are made to shower in change or provide a space to set a port a potty in
Welcome aboard! I hope you enjoy the channel! Yes, I’m right on the ‘edge’ of being too tall. Honestly if I was 6’5” I think It would be the limit. I do love sleeping in there - it’s just so cozy! Thank you for watching and for your comment! I really appreciate it! 😀
Excellent video subscribed in the first few minutes looking forward to the other videos. Loved the quote in the beginning “don’t confuse comfort with happiness”. Been living out of a Honda CR-V now for going on 3 yrs can’t imagine living in a sticks and bricks again. You have reinvigorated my interest in a Jeep again.
Oh thank you so much! WOW, 3 years! That’s amazing. Hey, the best thing about a Jeep with a good sleeping setup inside is: you can go absolutely anywhere! No matter the terrain, the Wrangler is the absolute most versatile vehicle made. And, that’s not just because I’m a ‘Jeep fanboy’ … it’s really just the truth! Having dual solid axles and some of the attributes like lockers, higher clearance, etc. I’d highly recommend looking at a Wrangler for your next rig! Thank you for watching and for your comment! My life is complicated right now, the Covid time, my sons growing up, health issues. So many things. I just bought an old Toyota matrix, partly as a 3rd family car, and partly to go car camping. I have a brand new Casita travel trailer, but it is such a project to set up and get ready. Plus new health issues come with significant lifting restrictions. The hitch alone is way over my limit. So I take a car camping trip next week to clear my head and get some perspective. I live down in Mississippi, and I am going to go all the way up the Natchez trace, and then back down again. It is one of my favorite national parks so far. Free camping and beautiful views. I love everything about this video.
🙏🏼 for a return to health for you friend! No matter what rig, getting out there as you said for perspective is so important! Stay safe and Thanks for watching and for the comment! I really appreciate it!🙌🏼🙏🏼👊🏼😃
I've lived in a shed, a tent, and the attic of a construction site. I've seen that look of astonishment in people's eyes when I tell them. Those were some of the best sleeps of my life :)
Dude, well said. I don’t think anybody could’ve rolled out a story like that as well as you did. I freaking subscribed right away. Freaking goosebumps bro. “never mistake comfort for happiness” I feel like it just got knighted . Seriously an amazing story about maybe the most grounded man on the planet and executed perfectly.

I got the remote start given to me as a gift after I told my dad I wished I had $500 bucks so I could do it! It was my bday and Christmas gift and it keeps on giving!
Everyone always shows their sleep set up in cooler or nicer weather. Never in 90 degree heat and 90 percent humidity, which is what I deal with 8 months out of the year here in southeast Georgia. I have a bed set up in both my 2003 Chevy Blazer and my 5x8 cargo trailer that I pull with my Blazer. Having 2 bed set ups is great for us lazy azzes and soon as you get your rooftop tent you will see exactly what I mean. I use my set up taking my 2 hour naps in a park in between my jobs on most days. Thanx for sharing
Right on! Your setup sounds awesome! It’s great to have options for sure! Indeed - I just installed an Ursa Minor Jeep Top on my Jeep, that turns the top into a camper top (roof top tent). I took it out a couple weekends ago and it was fantastic! I felt like I had so many options now and honestly, like I had a mansion on wheels! HA! Thank you for watching and for your comment! I really appreciate it! 😀
Back on my early days “Overlanding “ in South America on my Dad’s 75 series Land Cruiser as a teenager, sleeping in the back of the truck was perfectly natural and obvious place to do it. That was until I reached a spot to set my tent and camp for a few days (there was not roof tents back in those days, 35 years ago) all my gear would be on the roof of the truck. I live in Canada now and after all these years, I still do the same thing.
Right on! Ya, honestly the bed is very comfortable. Had some really good nights sleep in there! Thank you for watching and for your comment! I really appreciate it! 😀
This is in my plans for retirement. I want to put a lot of miles behind me and see a lot of country. I have an old camp trailer, I mean old, like from the 60's. No bathroom, no heater or air con, but I've always loved it because it a hell of a lot warmer than a tent. And you stay a bit cleaner.
Right on! That sounds awesome! I’m 20 years away from retirement, but indeed my plans are very similar to yours! Thank you for watching and for the comment! I really appreciate it! Cheers! 😃
I’ve lived outta pick up trucks with camper shells and suburbans on and off for the past 5 years. I love it. Building a box van now. Still want to have a good 4x4 truck to go more remote too. Best of both. Luxury, stand up, cook, shower, etc long trips in the van. Short weekend trips to remote spots in the 4x4 suv.
Right on! You’ll find Mr. Right! Something tells me you just might find him out on the trail! 😊 Thank you for watching and for your comment! I really appreciate it! 😀
Thank you so much! That means a lot to me. I try to mix things up from time to time and I’m really glad that intro resonated with you! Thank you for watching and for the comment! I really appreciate it! Cheers! 😊
Very nice setup. I had a similar setup in my JL. But as I am 6'4" I was facing the tailgate and my feet were on the armrest between the front seats when I wanted to stretch. It worked great for me. Also to maximize the sleeping area I have installed a drawer-style fridge under my sleeping platform. It worked perfectly. Another useful thing I had is I had a thick camping blanket attached to a velcro strip above the rear glass on the inside and tacked under the mattress. This way I could open my tailgate and the top window, use the fridge and storage area, cook on the tailgate table and still have a sleeping area and a cabin insulated and warm. I also had a gasoline heater installed in that trunk tub under the floor and tapped into my fuel tank and 12v power. Always had an instant heat. For the mattress I had a custom cut with a hot wire 4-inch topper. It was not a plush as my self-inflating foam air mattress in the iKamper, but acceptable. I wish I would take some videos, but now JL is gone and new JT build is underway :)
DANG!! That is so awesome! That sounds like an awesome setup! Thanks for sharing. I can picture exactly what you are talking about! I might need to look into a drawer style fridge. Very good information here. Thanks for watching and for the comment! I really appreciate it! Cheers! 😊
I built my Jeep similar to yours and I camp in it and I could actually live in it. Might have to one day. I'm glad I'm ready for most things. Only real difference I have is my fridge is in the normal spot on drivers side. I remove the 40% for my dog to sleep. It's always open to make things easier for him to get in and out. Great tip to sleep sideways with head over the console. The remote start is a life saver in the cold.
Cooler in the trunk and lightly packed has been my favorite way to road trip for years and sleep in the car along beaches and quiet areas. Often right next to hot and cold running water restrooms in parks or secluded rest areas with views, little traffic and few people. Love waking up to sunrise in scenic areas. Free parking is nice too. LoL
I have been car camping since 2016 in my Pontiac Vibe. I am only 5'2" so it works really well. Lots of room for me and the dog. I'm looking at a Jeep for my next vehicle, so I'm glad your video popped up this morning. Lots of good ideas.
That’s awesome!! 👏🏼 WOW a Skoda Roomster! I had to Google that! What a unique vehicle! 🚗 Thank you for watching and for your comment! I really appreciate it! 😀
Surprising not weird at all. SO VERY HELPFUL! I'm 6'3" and things like legroom, head room and how to get into position to sleep are so helpful. Thanks you for discussing the details. You are the man!
So glad this was helpful for you! I love it when people comment how this helped them out! Cheers! Thanks for watching and for the comment! I really appreciate it!🙌🏼🙏🏼👊🏼😃
That’s awesome! Ya, the safety piece is overlooked by many with tents. Sleeping in the vehicle is fantastic from a safety perspective. Thank you for watching and for the comment! Cheers! 😃
That’s a great way to put it! I’ve never heard that before … houseless but not homeless. 🙌🏼 Thank you for watching and for your comment! I really appreciate it! 😀
Nothing awkward about getting in my friend, for us ex-military and hunters who lived on the ground and slept where ever we could find enough room, your way of getting into your jeep is pretty standard OP 👍🏽
Right on! Ya, I just feel goofy sometimes on camera - it’s always weird watching yourself! Thank you for watching and for your comment! I really appreciate it! 😀
"Don't confuse comfort with happiness". The quote i needed today. ❤ I live in my Jeep for a few months a year, but I do carry 2 large locked pelican cases on my roof rack for tools and gear. I rarely get into them, but grateful to have my garage when I've broken down on the trail.
Right on! So glad that quote resonated with you! Indeed, pelican cases can hold so much gear! Thanks for watching and for the comment! I really appreciate it!🙌🏼🙏🏼👊🏼😃
Thanks brother! 🙏🏼 Ya, I still remember that moment like it was yesterday. My buddy’s story really put many things into perspective! 🙌🏼 Looking forward to hitting the trail again this year w/ you! 👊🏼💯
I love the practicality. Thank-you. I’ve started down the path of thinking of what adventures do I want to experience over time. What basic kit is needed to support all adventures, assess comfort, organization and safety needs. Then Build/acquire or add as needed. The journey is just around the corner.
I do the same thing in my JKUR on solo runs, except I don't have the rear view blocked with gear all the time, and the right side view partially blocked with the passenger seat all the time. I move gear up to the homemade shelf at night, and back down to the sleeping area during the day. Yes, it takes about 15 minutes to set up each evening and tear down each morning, but I can have full visibility plus also my recovery gear sits in bags right behind the passenger seat which makes it easy to access from the driver's seat. In an urgent/sketchy situation, I can hand recovery gear to a buddy from the driver's window without having to get out. I use a 22 inch wide thermarest inflatable insulated mattress, which I roll up in the morning and stow during the day. It works well.
Very nice! That sounds like you have got it down to a science! I think the way you are doing it is awesome! Thank you for watching and for the comment. I really appreciate it! Cheers! 😀 🙂 🤩 👊🏼
Great video; thank you :) Do you ever find the urge to have a big kitchen (or at least a full oven & multiple burners) to cook in? I would love to start a community spot where vanlifers & carcampers can meet, cook inside standing up, maybe take a hot shower and get a little reprieve :) I imagine something like a gameboard cafe but with showers & a kitchen!
WOW, really great question and comment. I think for people who are doing more of the van-life and full-time car camping … then yes for sure. For me, my trips are generally around 3-4 nights. But if I was going longer (which I will in the future), then the answer would definitely be yes. I’d suggest finding central locations around major areas like Moab, etc. for this type of thing. And would be a really awesome idea for sure! Thank you for watching and for your comment! 🙏🏼 I really appreciate it! 😀
@TrailNewbie awesome, thanks for the reply :) I'm in Canada and it seems like Vancouver Island has a bit of a vanlifer community too. Moab is on my list to visit for sure! I love the desert and heat 🥰 Maybe we can put a sort of gym-chain type of business model together where people pay a small membership fee and can use facilities anywhere in the world :) and unlike gyms, dogs would be welcome and there would be games, people could play music, share meals, etc. No shortage of ideas over here for sure...but I guess that's the easy part ;)
I'm so glad to stumble upon someone utilizing their Jeep this way. Years ago, once I found the Deep Sleep System, I started using my Jeep like this while volunteering with Backcounty Trail Maintenance groups. I live in the southeastern corner of NM so leaving on a Friday after work I usually get to that weekend's work site pretty late and as you mentioned it 's nice to just hop into bed; especially since most times I find myself in a trailhead parking lot. Then in the morning, as everyone else arrives I'm usually the one making coffee off my tailgate before we have a team meeting, and I roll everything under my deck and then backpack into that weekend's wilderness staging area. I did also buy the Deep Sleep window screens as they provide enough black out but also allow air flow in our dry environment. P.S. I use the basic Tuffy Security Deck as it allows me to put my feet under it with my gear on top; but once I pull my backpack out there is still enough space to store the Deep Sleep System, Frig & Powerbrick etc. under it so once I walk away from my Jeep it's "stealthy" and doesn't scream "overlander full of expensive gear" while left for the weekend at the trailhead. Also the ability to utilize all five seats comes in handy if we need to carpool farther in on Fire Service roads than other volunteers feel comfortable taking their passenger cars. I've nicknamed my concept "essentialism" vs. "minimalism" as I need more flexibility. Additionally, my Jeep is my daily driver so it gets left at my work lot or shopping lots; thus having the ability for it to "look" like a pavement princess used just to haul my three grand kids to soccer is also something that I had to factor in as I couldn't have just a dedicated Overlanding vehicle until I pay the Jeep off & retire. The intriguing thing is since I've been using my 2022 Willys Sport this way over the last three years, and gotten use to it; I'm starting to wonder if a RTT or a J-30 from Ursa Minor is really needed. Especially as my grandsons get older there would not me enough room, better to just get a slumberjack.com/slumber-shack-4-person-tent-shelter/ and save the money for better backpacking gear for the three of them. Besides in sketchy weather my daughter-in-law is calling us "kids" home. LOL!
Your rig sounds awesome! Thank you for taking the time to share your story! I love hearing from viewers like you, and how you are utilizing your vehicle in a similar way! Cheers! 😄😄
The first video I saw of you was the minimalist set up. Ever since been thinking about just as simple set up. Saving weight, wind drag, top heavy. I like the idea of minimizing carry stuff.
Right on! I’m so glad that these videos helped inspire you in some way! I’m always working on my setup, to make it better. I do have an Ursa Minor in my future - that will take the jeep to a whole new level. It will feel like a mansion!! Thank you for watching and for your comment! I really appreciate it! 😀
Remote start your jeep by using two tent poles of appropriate length. Maybe use a rubber sock on each end to protect your equipment. One stick for the brake pedal, one shorter stick for the ignition button. Just a thought. I slept in my Grand Cherokee on many, many camping trips. Blasting the air or the A/C first thing in the morning is completely AWESOME. I also loved rolling up to the campsite with my tent already made in the back. This setup can also save a guy a DUI!!! Been there many nights outside a buddy's house or even outside the bar. I loved the quote, and because I didn't get it at first, it hit hard when I did. Happiness often requires us to move out of our comfort zones. Some assume those who sleep in cars have a bad life. Such is clearly not the case. Thank you for the upload!
Yes! Tent poles and a rubber ‘boot’ of sorts on the end I think is the solution. I’m not married to the idea of getting a remote start yet (aftermarket) when I can do a little DIY as you described! I love the way you described how that quote hit you - with the delayed reaction but impactful perhaps even more because of that. That quote applies across many areas of life. If we’re just cruising - - we’ll just look back someday with regrets. If we’re challenging ourselves - - then we’ll have nothing but great memories and knowing that we did everything we could to live a fulfilling and worthwhile life! Whether that’s in something like work, sports, relationships, adventure or faith. 👊🏼
Greetings from Brazil. I'm getting ready to start taking camping trips and enjoying nature. Researching regular tents, roof tents and sleeping in the car. Sleeping in the car has always been an option for me, because I feel safer. Congratulations on the video. Beautiful images, lines and calm energy.
Wow! All the way from Brazil..! So awesome and exciting that you are building out the gear for your camping adventures! Personally, as you saw in this video I started by sleeping in the car for years. Only just recently have I converted my Jeep with a camper top (Ursa Minor). Enjoy the process! And, my best advise is - - just go for it..! You don't need a ton of gear at first. You'll eventually figure out all the things you need! Thank you for watching and for your comment! I really appreciate it! 😀
I have a similar yet slightly simpler, set up in my jeep. One thing is I use a male hospital urinal to pee in at night if it’s cold and I don’t want to get out. Works great!
Great introduction! I started car camping in my Subaru Crosstrek in CA national forests last year, totally agree with what you said. Lots of great memories. Thank you for sharing!
Right on! Subaru’s are a SOLID platform! I bet you never thought you’d hear that from a Jeep guy! Love that you’re getting out there! That’s what it’s all about! Thank you for watching and for your comment! I really appreciate it! 😀 Cheers!
Being 6.2 ft in height, I sleep in my Jeep almost the same way, but I have my fridge in the back (plus additional storage on the roof). The big advantage is, that you have a "change room" right behind the driver's seat which gives you the possibility to sit, work, use your laptop, change clothes, eat or just be in the car during bad weather. From there I crawl easily on top of the deep sleep solo. I second your point: you have to have a full size pillow, no matter how comfortable they promote those air up camping pillows.
Nice! Your setup sounds awesome! And great idea to have some additional room back there. 😊 thank you for watching and for the comment! I really appreciate it! 👊🏼
What a beautiful spot! I camp out of the back of my Jeep WJ and love it. Safe, secure, quiet, dry. I considered a roof top tent, but it checks NONE of the boxes noted above. And when it's time to leave base camp for some wheeling, I have nothing to empty out, dry out, or fold up. While it may compromise security, one thing I can't do without are a pair of mosquito nets for the windows so I can get some ventilation. While my set up isn't as extensive/expensive as yours, it suits me just fine.
Love it, that’s awesome to hear! Ya, a setup does not need to be expensive - it just needs to suit you just right! Your rig sounds awesome! Thank you for watching and for the comment! Cheers! 👏🏼
Two long thin sticks could be your "remote start" One for the brake and and one for the start button. Or one long stick and one long arm for the start button. Thanks
Yep, a great tip indeed! I’ve also thought about collapsible walking poles. We’ll see - I may just have the Jeep dealer do an install for me. Thank you for watching and for your comment! I really appreciate it! 😀
Ya, agree! That is a good storage solution, but at that time I didn’t have a roof rack. I do now with my most recent upgrade to an Ursa Minor top!! 🙌🏼😄👏🏼👊🏼
Right on! Yes, it doesn’t matter what vehicle you have what matters is that you are using it to get out! Thank you for watching and for the comment! I really appreciate it.😄👊🏼
I used to car camp often on mountain biking trips in my 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. There was room for an inflatable twin mattress with seats folded flat. That took up a lot of vertical space so I would usually use my backpacking inflatable mattress. It's a great design. My 2- door 2001 Wrangler TJ is not so long. It does beat setting up my tent late at night.
Sounds so cool..! Yes, sleeping inside the vehicle is a great option. Just about anyone can get out and do it right now with minimal gear! Thank you for watching and for your comment! I really appreciate it! 😀
Yep. Big fan of sleeping in the vehicle or near the vehicle and not on it. Way more convenient, lighter and not putting extra weight up high. I have a canvas bedroll that contains a 3” foam mat with flannel sheets, wool blanket, down comforter and pillow. I swap it between the Jeep, the bed of the Powerwagon or just throw it on the ground next to the fire if I want to sleep under the stars. Cheapish, simple and versatile. I also throw it on a cot for winter hot tenting or in the gazelle tent during warmer months if I’m staying in one place more than a day or two.
That’s awesome! It sounds like you are really getting out there and doing some awesome things! Thank you for watching, and for the comment, I really appreciate it! 😄👊🏼👏🏼💯🙌🏼
I bought a 2000 VW Euro Van, douglas rv mattress. Fits in the back perfectly. I absolutely love it. I take off for days with my bow and stay in the bush with my bordercollie Teeka. Best times
Great topic for a video for overlanding. Most people aren’t as tall as you and would fit better. Great information regarding this and how you make it work.
Thank you so much for the comment and I agree! Many could very easily fit in their vehicle. At 6’4” - I’m right on the edge of being able to. But, I do have a new sleep setup coming soon! 🙌🏼👍🏼👊🏼😄👏🏼💯
I’ve been doing this in a Suburban and now Yukon XL for about 7+ years. Love it for car camping. Plenty of room to even kick back in a low ground type chair in there, heat with a propane heater and sleep comfortably. Nice video. Thanks!👍
Thank you thank you! I really appreciate you watching and for the comment! WOW all the way from Belgium! 🇧🇪 It’s amazing how TH-cam can reach around the world!! 😊
Good luck with the channel. I’ve been there done that with roof top tents and even an offroad trailer with a rooftop tent. It was great and the roof tents are convenient, but now I’m planning to sleep inside my FJ Cruiser for solo camping this summer while fly fishing.
I also sleep in my jeep jk with a sleeping platform. It's tight but works. The previous owner built it out this way and the reason I bought it was for the exact reasons you mentioned. My first night camping (at a race track) it rained and yes you hear the rain on the roof but that cozy secure feeling makes it worth. There were many others camping in tents that were dealing with the rain in they're own way.
Yep, no joke! The secure feeling is a ‘for sure’ item when sleeping inside the Jeep! And for me - I love the sound of rain on the roof! Very soothing. Thanks for watching - and your rig sounds awesome! Cheers! 😃
Hello from the uk. I sleep in my car. I'm lucky enough to have a house as well, but staying in my car takes me back to nature and i always sleep really well. Nice video and message. 😊

So awesome! I really loved reading this! Thank you for watching and for the comment! Indeed! The joy of the journey and the experiences are what it’s all about. You might wake up with a sore back once or twice, but you can’t put a price on some of the views we get! You could pay 25 million for a home in Malibu or you could park your jeep on the beach - much more economical! AHAHHAH. Cheers to your adventures! Reach out anytime! 😃
@@jakeowens1770no, the fridge is on the rear drivers side seat. No issues of not being able to see my mirrors. Though, you might notice - I don’t have a rear view mirror on my Jeep. 🤪
“Don’t confuse comfort with happiness.” Probably one of the greatest quotes ever. It applies to so many aspects of life.

Hidden's food and water dishes are on top of her tote in the floor beside her bed space. i lived in an old minivan for 3 years straight, age 62 to start.

Nice job!
Right on! Your setup sounds awesome!! 👏🏼 I do love sleeping in the Jeep! 🙌🏼🤩 Thank you for watching and for your comment! I really appreciate it! 😀
Me too.
There are many, many retired women and men who have channels and live out of their vans or cars with no roof top tent. Several young people as well. But always enjoy seeing people's set up.
Yes, you are correct! I love checking out all types of configurations. Thank you for watching and for your comment! I really appreciate it! 😀

never has a youtube video made me feel this way, that intro was an experience
Oh wow. This comment means so much to me. As a content creator, we never know how our content will resonate with the viewer. The story at the beginning was one I will remember forever. I agree well said
I got a shiver during the intro. It was powerful.

Don’t confuse comfort for happiness you just got a subscribe my friend within the first minute and 30 seconds.
Right on! Thank you so much! I really appreciate the encouragement and comment! Thank you for watching - reach out anytime! Cheers! 😃
Same! What a fantastic philosophy!
Wow, what a story! My best to you friend! Thanks for watching and for the comment! I really appreciate it!🙌🏼🙏🏼👊🏼😃
I grew up in a very outdoorsy, adventurous family, but we didn’t have allot of money.
Quiet, warm and comfortable. Figured this out by accident one time when i forgot my tent poles. Slept in my car every time after that! Great setup!
I love that saying don't confuse
Comfort, for happiness ❤❤
😊 thank you so much for the comment, and for the encouragement! It is so true - we don’t need to be comfortable to be happy. I think in some ways the opposite is true. Being challenged and uncomfortable; overcoming obstacles is really something that brings great joy! Cheers! 😃
Just the story itself in the beginning is just wow.
🙌🏼 thank you so much. Ya, my buddy who that story is about is a true lifelong friend of mine. We can learn a lot from those simple words. Thank you for watching, and for the comment! I really appreciate it!
We just bought our first Jeep Saturday. Then this video pops up on Tuesday in my feed. My coworker asked me last night, is there enough room? I told her we could camp in there. And here is your video. My husband is also 6 ' 4" so yes this video helped a lot. Thank you so much for sharing. I subscribed and will be watching your videos today to catch up.
@@michelebaker6001 so glad this video helped!! 😃 Thank you for watching and for your comment! I really appreciate it! 😀
Nice set up and jeep.
People are shocked when they find out there’s a bed in the back of my vehicle. Best sleep ever…and being able to start the engine and drive away in a split second if that situation ever presents itself and it has = priceless.
A long body pillow helps.
Be well
Right on! Ya, agree! I’ve had so many people like - what?!? There’s a bed in there!!! Hahahaha, they’re shocked! I’ve never thought about the body pillow, but agree that would be nice! 👍 Thank you for watching and for your comment! I really appreciate it! 😀
So far you exceeded your goal by almost 3x. As it's 12/20/24 now as I'm just watching your channel for the first time.
Thank you so much for noticing that! It’s been an incredible year of growth and support from viewers like you! Thanks for watching and for the comment! I really appreciate it!🙌🏼🙏🏼👊🏼😃
I've been car camping for more than 7 years now, and I'm more comfortable sleeping inside than in an outdoor tent. You said it right, a decent night sleep is what someone who drove for hours really needs. Great stuff.
Right on! Agree, the nights sleep you can get inside a vehicle is so AWESOME! Thanks for watching and for the comment! I really appreciate it!🙌🏼🙏🏼👊🏼😃
126 year old veteran of the US Moon corps here, I suffer from chronic heartburn after spicy food or orange juice so one day I decided to pack up.
AHAHHAHA, this made me seriously LOL. Love it! Thanks for a good laugh! Thanks for watching and for the comment! I really appreciate it!🙌🏼🙏🏼👊🏼😃
Lmao, good on making fun of all the other disgenic freaks in these comment section.
I love this. I sleep in my jeep often. More often than not actually. I feel safe and comfortable in it ❤
That is awesome! I bet you have an awesome set up! Thank you for watching and for your comment! I really appreciate it!

Right on! Your right sounds awesome!! 👏🏼 indeed, some of the best nights sleep, that I have had have been inside the Jeep. Thank you for watching and for your comment! 🙏🏼 I really appreciate it! 😀

Thanks for the video and bringing back memories 😃
Right on! Glad you enjoyed the video! Ya, I try to keep it simple, but at the same time - I do have a ton of gear if/when needed. Cheers! 😀
Thanks for watching and for the comment! I really appreciate it!🙌🏼🙏🏼👊🏼😃
Passed this onto a group of friends that are "looking in all the wrong places". Thanks. Bob in Nevada
I’m glad you got something out of the video, and that you liked my set up! Thanks for watching and for the comment! I really appreciate it!🙌🏼🙏🏼👊🏼😃
Another way to camp in a Jeep- I always sleep in my JK when our Jeep club goes camping.
You can always set up a port a potty outside in a small stand up changing tent These changing tents set up and take down in a few minutes They are made to shower in change or provide a space to set a port a potty in
Just found your channel, it amazes me how someone so tall can sleep so comfortably in your jeep. Thanks for sharing. Stay safe on your travels.
I really appreciate it! 😀
I am watching this episode for the 2nd time. It is January 2, 2025. You recorded it in January 2024 and said that you are trying to get to 10,000 subscribers by the end of the year. Congratulations Greg! You more than doubled that number. TH-cam shows you have 27.3K subscribers. I glad to have been one of the new subscribers for 2024 that helped you exceed your goal. Thank you so much! This means a lot to me to get this type of a comment! It was an incredible year. I cannot believe how 2025 was such a year of growth. It’s the support, likes, comments - all the things!! And comments like this that keep me going! I really appreciate this - I cannot say enough how much this means.

Having accommodations in my Jeep is actually the goal, not the road to a rooftop tent. Great video, very insightful! God bless.
Yes! Sleeping inside the Jeep is AWESOME! Thank you for watching and for your comment! I really appreciate it! 😀 God bless you friend! 🙏🏼
Love it! What a great story, and what a great approach to Offroad camping. Thank you for watching and for the comment! I really appreciate it! 😊

Thank you so much! I really appreciate your kind words! 🙌🏼😄 It’s comments like this that keep me going!! 😄😄🙏🏼
Yes, being resourceful is key that’s for sure! Thank you for watching and for your comment! Reach out anytime! Cheers!😄😄😊🙌🏼👊🏼👏🏼
LoL
Love it! Thanks for sharing. I can almost picture it in my mind! Thanks for watching and for the comment! I really appreciate it!🙌🏼🙏🏼👊🏼😃
I have been car camping since 2016 in my Pontiac Vibe. I am only 5'2" so it works really well. Lots of room for me and the dog. I'm looking at a Jeep for my next vehicle, so I'm glad your video popped up this morning. Lots of good ideas.
Right on! Ya, I highly recommend a Jeep! You can go just about anywhere!! Thank you for watching and for your comment! I really appreciate it! 😀

That’s awesome! Ya, the safety piece is overlooked by many with tents. Sleeping in the vehicle is fantastic from a safety perspective. Thank you for watching and for the comment! Cheers! 😃
I lived in my 2006 Dodge Grand Caravan for nearly three years. Had a cot with a mattress and memory foam pad. Yes, I was houseless but never homeless.
That’s a great way to put it! I’ve never heard that before … houseless but not homeless. 🙌🏼

Nothing awkward about getting in my friend, for us ex-military and hunters who lived on the ground and slept where ever we could find enough room, your way of getting into your jeep is pretty standard OP 👍🏽

I really appreciate it!🙌🏼🙏🏼👊🏼😃
Man the intro gave me chills! Great video Greg 👏🏻
Thanks brother! 🙏🏼 Ya, I still remember that moment like it was yesterday. My buddy’s story really put many things into perspective! 🙌🏼
Looking forward to hitting the trail again this year w/ you! 👊🏼💯
I love the practicality. Thank-you. I’ve started down the path of thinking of what adventures do I want to experience over time. What basic kit is needed to support all adventures, assess comfort, organization and safety needs. Then Build/acquire or add as needed. The journey is just around the corner.
Right on! Enjoy the adventure and have fun building out your rig! Thanks for watching and for the comment! I really appreciate it!🙌🏼🙏🏼👊🏼😃
I do the same thing in my JKUR on solo runs, except I don't have the rear view blocked with gear all the time, and the right side view partially blocked with the passenger seat all the time.
Interesting about the urinal option. I haven’t looked into this yet. But likely will in some way! Thanks for watching and for the comment! 😃
@@TrailNewbieempty gal.water jug,- milk style. Square cooler from eal mart for ladies. Not very nice, but certainly convenient, and warm at night.
That’s how I would do it. For more storage I would add the biggest ski box on top, although your mileage would take a good hit.
Ya, agree! That is a good storage solution, but at that time I didn’t have a roof rack. I do now with my most recent upgrade to an Ursa Minor top!! 🙌🏼😄👏🏼👊🏼
Words so true! Thanks! I use the DeepSleep in a 2024 Subaru Crosstrek, smaller but gets the job done.
Best times
That sounds AWESOME! So cool. Those Euro Vans are legit. Thank you for watching and for the comment! I really appreciate it! Cheers! 😃
Nice video. Thanks!👍
Right on! That sounds awesome! A Yukon XL would be such a legit option! 💯 Thanks for watching and for the comment! I really appreciate it!🙌🏼🙏🏼👊🏼😃
That’s a great set up, well designed!!
Thank you so much! I appreciate it! 😊 👊🏼
Like you, I'm a Newbe in Overlanding. I love your sleeping setup. Well done. Keep going. Best Regards from Belgium, David.
Right on! Ya, there’s something about sleeping in the vehicle that is SO good! Thank you for watching and for your comment! I really appreciate it! 😀
Cheers! 😃
The security is the #1 reason for me. Especially if you're camping alone.
Yep, totally agree. Security from the elements, animals … or worse … people! Thank you for watching and for your comment! I really appreciate it! 😀
Hello from the uk. I sleep in my car. I'm lucky enough to have a house as well, but staying in my car takes me back to nature and i always sleep really well. Nice video and message. 😊
So glad you enjoyed the video! And WOW, all the way from across the pond! I love how a video made in the mountains of California can make it all the way around the world! Cheers! Thank you for watching and for your comment! I really appreciate it! 😀
I love how we can make friends with like minded people and appreciate people from around the world through vlogs. Wishing you lots of fun in the great outdoors ☺️
That was such a beautiful intro!
Thank you so much! I’m glad you enjoyed it. 😄🙌🏼👏🏼 And thank you for watching and for the comment! 🙏🏼
Fj cruiser owner here and the BEST nights sleep have been in my vehicle in the rain while on an adventure ❤ your reasons!
Agree! For some reason I sleep so well in there too! Thanks for watching and for the comment! I really appreciate it!🙌🏼🙏🏼👊🏼😃
Carry A Pole That Extends To Use To Push Your Start Button.
100% a great idea!! Thank you for watching and for your comment! I really appreciate it! 😀
The beginning of video got me! What you said about your friend and he had a rough time in his life. Everyone listened. Bet you didn't know about your true friend. Pretty humbling correct. Keep that feeling with you. Keep it real bro. Honestly I bet your friends want to live like you. Subscribed! Good vibes broda

Fyi am 4 11 and pretty much wheres lake or creek fishing is a must.. Happy Trails 🤙Mahalo
Tried the fridge on the seat but I couldn't see out the side mirror, which I hated. You remove the seat?
@@jakeowens1770no, the fridge is on the rear drivers side seat. No issues of not being able to see my mirrors. Though, you might notice - I don’t have a rear view mirror on my Jeep. 🤪
