It's no secret I am not a fan of vacuuming. But truthfully, knowing how to do it properly makes it a more palatable job that I can get done in less time. This is how I train my staff to do it and many of them have had those wonderful 'a-ha' moments, where they'll say they wished they knew this years ago. I hope you enjoy!

Hey! I LOVE your videos! BUT...I must disagree with one very crucial tip that I know you recommend a lot.... Baking soda! I actually own and operate a vacuum cleaner store (believe it or not!) I am a certified vacuum technician as well. In our professional opinion and experience, baking soda is an extremely dangerous product to use in both your vacuum and carpet!! Here's why: Its fine, powdery nature quickly CLOGS the bag or filters of your vacuum. This microscopic obstruction badly strains the motor. Additionally, the dust can and will eventually pull into the motor, prematurely shorting it out. Unless the user throws out the bag mid-use, or stops to clean or change the vac's filters, it will clog and may shut itself off due to overheating. (And of course nobody ever takes this precaution haha!) This powder is very similar to that havoc caused by sheetrock dust...death to vacuums!
Secondly, baking soda is destructive to carpet fiber. No vacuum is able to recover all of the powder from the recesses of the carpet. Much sifts through in the padding and down do the base floor. What's left behind will indeed absorbs odors. However the soda is microscopically sharp and abrasive! When walking over the carpet over time, the "leftovers" cut the carpet fiber at its base. This destroys the carpet :-(
I'm sorry to leave a "downer" of a comment :-( But I love your channel, think all your tips are amazing. My conscious just bugged me with fear that folks might blow up their vacuums!! Keep up the great work otherwise!

QueenVac I forgot to add one thing.... Vacuuming slowly and thoroughly and very regularly with a high-quality, bagged vacuum (with an electric power nozzle attachment) will keep your carpets fresh and free of odors and allergens. No need for additives like baking soda. Once in a great while (if the type of carpet allows it) use an extractor/carpet washing machine to rinse the carpet clean with special solution and water. I do not recommend applying anything that leaves behind powder or residue of any kind. Some folks may feel like that's too much work, but carpets are an expensive investment and an often-overlooked element in the health of your home. Maintenance done correctly is crucial!

+QueenVac I use a Kirby. What's your opinion on them

    • @QueenVac
      @QueenVac 8 ปีที่แล้ว +49

I cannot recommend Dyson in good conscious. I'm sorry. We as a rule do NOT recommend bagless vacuums, period. We see far too much product failure, warranty and they are highly unsanitary due the nature of the maintenance required (emptying, hand washing filters monthly, etc.) Most people cannot keep up with that, no can be exposed to the collected allergens at that high level. Bagless do not handle dirt well internally either, and thus do not last very long. Dyson is no exception. I'd send you to some more specific educational resources that I produce or to my vacuum store, but I don't feel it would be or appropriate here or respectful to Melissa. Thanks for asking and good luck!!

I love how you pointed out that taking time to vacuum is necessary. A carpet cleaning company told me to vacuum as slow as I would use a traditional carpet shampooer, which needs to be loved slowly to remove all water. He also recommended going from two different directions. N to S and E to W, with overlapping passes.

Our dogs track in dirt. Not med, but just that dry dusty dirt that quietly covers the whole floor if you skip a day vacuuming.
Seeing the contrast when I first start is so satisfying. Like there’s just 1 strip of clean carpet so far, & it “wasn’t even that dirty,” but there’s a noticeable color difference once it’s vacuumed. I LOVE that. I’m literally about to vacuum now; thanks for the motivation to get on that.

LOVE vacuuming! Especially with my FilterQueen! No dust in the air... it actually works as an air cleaner while I vacuum. I have bad allergies and had NO relief until i bought one second hand in 10/10 condition. I use it for bare floors, furniture, blinds, EVERYTHING! I always feel my home is 150% cleaner after vacuuming lol

I have to say you're doing a great job describing on how to use a vacuum. I would suggest to be careful with the baking soda since it's so fine it can cause damage to the motor. It's similar to picking up dry wall dust, which you should never do with a residential vacuum. Your attention to detail and research on your topics are commendable. If you have any questions about vacuums, contact me. More than happy to help. Keep up the good work and have a great day ....... Tyler

I LOVE vacuuming! My friend got me in the habit after I had a really bad allergy season and he recommended I do it every other day. Since then, my dad and I always find vacuums at yard sales and fix them up, selling our old ones. About a month ago, we got a Dyson DC07 for $5. It had horrible suction until I tore it down, ordered a few replacement gaskets, and cleaned it all up before putting it back together. DYSON RULES. Root-Cyclone has no comparison.
A friend of mine is now an engineer who designs vacuum cleaners. Totally jealous.

I was surprised to see that you vacuum has 2 different heads for hard floors and carpet floors. Where I'm from (Sweden) I've never seen that. Here we have only one head with a flip switch on the head, that you easily step onto, that flips the carpet brush bristles away from or onto the floor (and some fancy vacuums have a sensore thingy that flips it). Maybe its a Swedish thing? Maybe its a European thing? Maybe its because we don't usually have completely carpeted floors. Wooden, linoleum ect floors are more common here.
(We don't walk around in our shoes inside homes either)
    Love from Sweden!

In the USA people, I guess, were not taught to shoes off except in some cultures so it is hard to retrain people, including relatives. The floor attachment also
dusts the floor with a pile roller so it doesn't work well on carpets. I like the idea of the flip switch.

For cleaning your vacuum bristles as well as paint brushes I use a steel cat or dog comb. I like the comb that has 2 different spacings (narrow & wide)on the same comb. Conversely you could also use a paint brush comb on your vacuum brushes. Cleaning the crevice tool is similar to what you do. Soak it in hot water and Dawn detergent. But use a bottle brush to get harder to remove dirt. In fact, I have a zip lock bag of brushes in addition to a toothbrush that I use on all types of cleaning projects. Any item that comes with it’s own brush is fair game for my collection; like brushes that come with electric razors. A coffee measure with a long handle and a stiff brush on the end. I found several packages with a variety of brushes at Harbor Freight. For these brushes to work efficiently, clean and dry them after each use.

I hate vacuuming but love how my home looks after it is done. I have an adorable Jack Russell terrorist and she sheds like crazy. We previously had a Bischon and before that a Lhasa Apso, totally non shedding. The Jack hair is small, white and absolutely gets everywhere. You really have to be a dog or cat lover to put up with their hair loss. We are in this family that is why we purchased the Dyson for pet hair. This comment is way late but I love vacuuming, for me it goes back to infancy my mother said the only way I'd go down for a nap was if she had the vacuum cleaner running where I could hear it.
The sound is still soothing to this day, we had a cleaning business cleaning churches and I loved vacuuming the larger rooms.
The smell of a freshly cleaned carpet is also really soothing.

Stop telling people to use powder like substances on your carpets! These "powders" KILL YOUR VACUUM! They are finer than dirt and clog your vacuum motor. When your vacuum can't breathe, it seriously oerheats and it ruins it.

I bought an Electrolux canister vac with a hepa filter over 20 years ago and it still works like a champ! But I do not have wall to wall carpet anymore - mainly because the edges of the carpet at the wall always get dirtier than the rest because the airflow at the edges underneath draws dirt into that area. I do have area rugs with padding and when you lift them up you will see how much dirt gathers underneath them. So I am sure this is true for the wall to wall carpet as well - which you cannot remove by vacuuming. Also using the beater bar head on a hardwood floor helps them to shine.

Sometimes the easiest things are the most over-looked. I do a lot of sewing....so I'm familiar with a tool called a "seam ripper". It's a small apparatus with a hooked shape cutter....and it makes slicing through hairs and fibers that get caught in your vacuum rollers very, very easy. I tend to run it through my vacuum rollers periodically to prevent a bigger accumulation later. Quick and easy process.

    • @monicasolomon7757

I took your advice! I have a huge area rug that my husky loves to sleep on. When vacuuming today I decided to vacuum the rug first. After finishing the rug I poured on the baking soda and went to vacuum the remaining home. I got back to the area rug and surprisingly the baking soda came up very easily. When I looked at my vacuum brush to my surprise there was a significant amount of dog hair that came up. (AGAIN!) I actually thought it was clean the first time. The room also smelled a lot cleaner with the baking soda added on the rug. A huge thanks!

I have an expensive Miele vacuum with heap filter, two shedding dogs. I like this video and others here so thanks Melisa and keep it up! but I would never use baking soda.
Did you know…that baking soda can be dangerous for your vacuum cleaner?
Baking soda is one of nature's great deodorizers. Effective and inexpensive, baking soda can be used in so many different ways from cooking to cleaning, and is often used to absorb unpleasant odors.
Thus, baking soda and other powder-based carpet fresheners are very popular products on today's market. When sprinkled on carpet and vacuumed up, these products work by absorbing bad smells, and often have added perfumes so as to leave behind a fresh fragrance on the rug and in the room. That's great - except for two big problems...
    1. The particles of baking soda are so small, that a portion of the product remains in the carpet fiber and/or sifts beneath the rug and padding to the floor below (never to be recovered!) Don’t believe me? If you use baking soda and one day rip up your carpeting, you’ll see a surprising amount of its residue left behind!
    2. Again, due to the small particle size of baking soda or freshener product, these can clog the pores of your vacuum’s bag or HEPA filter. This can drastically reduce suction resulting in poor cleaning performance and cause clogs to form. Even worse, this dust can escape the filtration system in which your vacuum’s motor can “breathe” these particles and eventually short out.

The quietest, most powerful vacuum ...You, like everyone else will donate your Dyson to charity! BTW, like the SEBO, YOU ARE fabulous on an international scale !! CHEERS!

Slow, overlapping strokes will ensure you remove deeply imbedded dirt from carpeting. I usually vacuum once daily, and do two or three strokes before moving to the next section. Vacuum cleaners require routine maintenance to keep them performing at their peak efficiency. For example, keeping the roller brush free of hair, string and lint; making sure the dust bag/ dust bin is changed or cleaned often; replacing the belt when it becomes stretched or broken. This will keep your machine running much longer and save on repair bills.

Vacuuming in slow motion is the best tip! I heard it a year ago and i really noticed a difference! We have frisé and it's much fluffier when I go slow. It's amazing how much our Dyson sucks up! I got the animal even though we don't have pets. I swear it's sucking dirt through the foundation!!

I love my Dyson(s) I have a canister and a cordless stick vac. Love both, but use my stick the most because of the ease of use. Also, I love that I can take both apart and clean it easily. Lastly, when the charge is done, so am I and it is time for a break! I'm not crazy about any housework but the stick has make it so much easier. I do vac almost every single day because I have 3 dogs! I make it a rule to empty the bin after every use. Because why would you want to keep that crud in the vac - get it out of there! I like my house clean, so housework is a must. I also agree that working smarter and not harder is the way to do it! Love your tips!!!! THANK YOU!

I hate vacuuming sooooo much, I bought the iRobot Roomba.
Also on a side subject and one interesting cleaning tip many cleaning people don't talk about (I learned while my carpet was getting installed), is that you can not use all vacuums on all types of carpets. For example, I purchased the Dyson Cinetic Big Ball Animal + Allergy. It was still in the box when my new carpet installer saw it and commented that it was actually way too powerful for my new looped carpet he was getting ready to install. He said it would unravel and pull out the loops! Wow was I thankful he saw the unopened box before I started using it. I ended up returning it to the store.

I don't mind vacuuming now that I have a Shark Rotator True Pet Professional. My carpets have never looked so good. I have dogs and they bring in lots of everything from the yard and I can clean my oriental rugs in no time. If you have allergies purchase a vacuum that is completely sealed so that you're not breathing dust that is coming out of your vacuum. I now can actually clean under my appliances with a special tool that came with my vacuum. Over the years I have found that the best cleaning method is to clean up a mess when you see and don't let it wait. Be in a cleaning mode even on days that you haven't scheduled for cleaning.

I'm confused why Melissa owns a Dyson over a Hoover. The attachments that come with each are 1 for 1, for the same purpose, and of the same quality level. But the Hoover vacuum is at least 3 times more powerful, has filters that are significantly easier to clean, and it was one fifth of the price of the Dyson.
My Dyson stopped performing well after three years (it still ran, of course, but not well even with brand new filters and brand new parts). I've had the Hoover since 2005. It still works better than the Dyson that we bought in 2012.

Thank you for another informative and entertaining presentation. Loved to vacuum and took great pride in a beautiful home. Due to back issues, vacuuming is a painful chore that my doctor has forbidden me to do. You'd think that'd make me happy, but for someone as OC as me AEGHGHGH!
:( Talk about 50/50! I used to love vacuuming, loved the satisfaction of knowing my house was clean, clean, clean. My vacs have always had super-man powers of allergen and dust filtration. (Yes, "vacs," past tense and plural. There have been many, and I think of them now as past lovers. We made magic together, those vacs & I... um, right.) But I didn't just start in the corner, I started at the top, light fixture, and made my way down to the floor. Before the floor was vacuumed, any surface the vac didn't catch enough dust on was dusted again or polished, shined, whatever it needed. Then my little hand basket of supplies went outside the door of the room, and I vacuumed my way out. Final touch was a spritz of air fragrance. Nope, never worked in housecleaning just OC. I need a walker these days and am unable to use a vacuum. Would love to see you try out some robot vacuums. And I loves me my olives.

It does make a difference to have a better vacuum, I agree! I usually keep to the taxation rules. I think we have to keep our papers for 7 years. So things pertaining to taxes can be ditched after 7 years, and other things that are no longer relevant can go. Also, you can scan things and save them on an external hard drive and that way you can shred everything!
