The only way to know if a game WILL be good pre-release is if the developers themselves are confident with their game. For example Fromsoftware gave a whole beta test copy for reviewers to and critics alike to show it off around social media and weren't afraid of raw trailers unlike the cyberpunk 2077 situation.
If the game will be bad, here are a few red flags you should probably notice:
      1) heavily scripted trailers
      2) no pre-release gameplay
      3) promises that no one can really achieve

You also have to ask, for say the repost, exactly how do they want them to change the animation? Will it really make a game better if they chop for the head first this time instead of gut? Sneak from behind, it’s either the back Stan or go back to waiting a year each time like DS2 because it’s got to go through multiple strikes to finish, which you just wouldn’t do in real life, you’d stab them in the back ffs. Then weapon animations, sure you can change each weapons animations but the animations are still limited and will just end up being basically the same animations but on different weapons, it’s all pointless, time consuming and expensive when you can just reuse animations that are perfectly fine already and put that time and money into a genuinely new feature like the horse, jump, that horse riding boss that looks like two separate NPC’s. That would take so much work if they are separate NPC’s. That dude with multiple hands, he has fingers on each hand, imagine the amount of bones involved in animating that guy!

Makes sense cause it seems like they will often really start optimizing and push a last gen console to its actual limits with games approaching a new gen release. Then when newer games come out able to utilize the new consoles they often don't meet a graphics bar because the really good looking games for that console won't be coming out til near the end of its life. A game like Forbidden West looks pretty good but it's not like they couldn't do it last gen aside from the 4k.. that 4K really makes a difference though just like how going from low resolution to highest resolution makes an old crappy looking game look amazing by comparison. Elden Rings seems like it has good enough graphics for the kind of game it is but in that department there are some things I've seen that look like hot ass graphics from 10 years ago trying to blend with fairly modern high resolution stuff.

By being economical with their assets and animations, it allows them to get more creative elsewhere. When you play a Fromsoft game and have that inherent familiarity go straight to your fingertips, it feels like you're getting rewarded for the time investment you've made in them. They're not reinventing the wheel, they're just improving, inch by inch, how it feels to ride on it.
I mean, if Megaman can be a game tens of times over where you go through levels with the same arm cannon, fight a collection of bosses, gain their powers, and then go through a final super level to beat a familiar final boss, with fun tweaks to the game play made over time, all while feeling utterly familiar, friendly, and challenging at the same time... then why the fuck not with Souls games too?

To prove my point, one can go at different times and weather conditions from Church of Elleh to the Gatefront. Even if the level of detail system is far from perfect (it's just not well-suited for an open world) the Art-Direction together with these PBR effects just looks stunning good, it fits all together: Grass colours and height together with trees and stones, as well as light scale.

It’s taking everything that From has learned with the previous entries and evolving it to fit on this huge plane. Like Miyazaki said, every single piece of this game is shaped around the idea of being a true open world. On a related note, it seems like people aren’t paying as much attention to the intricate details in the combat as I’d have hoped. Barely anyone I’ve seen has commented on the multi-hitting attacks on weapons, driving your weapons further into the enemy when given the chance. You can parry with weapon blocks, shields seem to function similar to the Lance from MH, the hit box on that enemy’s spear was IMPECCABLE. I struggle to care about the reusing of a deathblow animation when the combat system as a whole seems to have been dragged up by the roots and polished to a golden sheen. I’m not saying that you can’t complain about such things, but I feel as though some fans are missing the forest for the trees here. And I will absolutely not abide by anyone saying From is lazy, that’s a step too far. Also I’m just…so tired of the graphical comparisons at this point. Every time I see a current gen, open world game get its pixel count compared to a PS5 exclusive remake I start to feel closer and closer to Micolash.

Ubisoft uses the same formula with little tweaks between games, the only real change between them is the storyline. From software is always experimenting and trying to see what they can do, even when they "fail" (I don't consider dark souls II a failure), they learn a lot from it.
For the same reason you can't compare cyberpunk to elden ring. CD went from a third person game, medieval environment, sword combat to a futuristic world, first person shooter. @@veraseb I get that, I think from soft does a good job of practicing new punches though, they just practice 2-3 new punches per game. I think what people may be missing is that elden ring has been planned for years and from soft wanted to add new mechanics but had no way of testing them out. The solution was games like bloodborne and sekiro that put new mechanics, playstyles etc. Under a new ip so they wouldn't be associated with DS and let DS fans down if they didnt work. From those games they got to watch the fanbase and see what they really liked and then added the favorite mechanics to elden ring. On top of the mechanics added from bloodborne and sekiro this game has mounted combat, open world, new story, customized summoning system, crafting, and, im sure, a host of other new mechanics. The reason why From Soft continually puts out high quality games is because each previous game is the foundation for the next one. That makes a very robust, albeit slowly evolving, always satisfying experience.
This is why people should listen when miyazaki says this is an "evolution" of DS. An evolution is t a different beast, it is the original beast with some mutations, go over enough mutations and you end up with a different beast entirely. In that respect Elden Ring is a very different beast from Demon Souls (or even DS1)

But they still used extremely careful and crafty level design to showcase very large open vistas that depicted areas you could get to and were available in the game. However, those distant areas couldn’t be directly approached from the vista viewpoint, you had to wind your way through the convoluted levels in between. In this progression the viewpoint was always carefully managed so as not to overwhelm the amount of detail either required in memory or pushed through the render pipeline. Likely, when you look down from high up and see the swamp far below it’s a low polygon replica of the swamp. In Elden Ring, this appears different, with a much larger amount of background assets connected into one less linear virtual level. Even still, they probably need lower polygon versions of far away chunks, and it’s highly unlikely you can spot the hollows on the battlements of a distant castle, but the Ps5/Xbox X can push enough through the pipe to render a far less toy variant and far more numerous actors than previous generations. The ER open design just wasn’t even possible on the PS3 and would be marginal (which big compromises) on the PS4. FromSoftware is also a very efficient team. They reuse assets for 2 reasons, as you mentioned that they think it already works, and also to create emotional familiarity for players. This is most prominent in sound fx. Bloodborne, utter masterpiece that it is, and differently styled, borrows so many sounds from DS. But there is a deep emotional connection now to those sounds, like the sound of touching a bonfire/lamp or the use of a flask etc. it’s both instantly familiar and resonant.

Also, i don't know how big From Soft is but they are nowhere near as big as other AAA devs. Ubisoft can have multiple studios working on an Assassin's Creed game. Naughty Dog or Santa Monica could take like 5-6 years to develop a single game. From Soft and Miyazaki worked on 2 games and the DS3 DLCs since DS3 came out in 2016 AND they are supposedly working on more than one game if rumors about a xbox exclusive are true.

If you actually hack into Fromsoft’s games and go out of bounds, you will find that even on older systems, they put a ton of effort into the backgrounds and low polygon versions of faraway areas, as far back as the original Demon’s Souls. They put a lot of effort into making their worlds as concise and whole as possible, which you really don’t find in the vast majority of studios. Elden Ring already looks gorgeous as it is, I am interested in seeing how they are adapting their backgrounds to next gen tech.

I honestly think that the re-used animations is a sign that Fromsoft is further streamlining their game development process. From what little I know, it seems like the earlier Souls games had incredibly rushed developments, especially Dark Souls 2, because of how many new things they wanted to make, and how little time they had to do it well. Even Bloodborne seems to have had a bit of a wonky development, and they only reason it probably isn't more noticeable is because Sony was backing the project, giving Fromsoft more money, and probably more man power, to work with. But so by re-using animations that are deemed "good", Fromsoft is saving themselves a lot of time to work on arguably more important things, like updating the engine and creating the world

    • @loneaxe1986

Couldn't have said it better, also, just because a game re-uses animations, it doesn't mean it is a copy or that it is going to be bad, I mean there is tons of new mechanics and animations, it is a whole new open world and they had to code, animate, etc... I really think this is gonna turn out very well, fromsoftware never dissapointed us, some releases were a bit bad, I am looking at you DM remake, but excluding a few releases they have been releasing only masterpieces, and it dates back to 1993 I mean take a look at from software older games and you will see how even then they had their diferences from the main market, anyways, it might be the hype taking over me but it doesn't matter, I trust from software 100%, unlike other companies.

"Even Bloodborne seems to have had a bit of a wonky development, and they only reason it probably isn't more noticeable is because Sony was backing the project"
If Sony truly gave From a lot of money and time to work with they would not have made covenants so bare bones.
The game would have had even more weapons/armor etc., more varied chalice dungeons, more areas/enemies/bosses than the Dark Souls games, but the trilogy has far more meat on all aspects compared to Bloodborne so it seems to be that Bamco gives From far more manpower and time compared to Sony.

The open world meaning 90% less deaths from falling off a cliff into an abyss and now invaders will no longer be able to just wait farther along the linear path of a particular area and use NPCs as effective meat shields as much. I feel it will encourage just having a straight PvP fight as opposed to either the host just standing by the bonfire or the invader just standing behind enemies until they see you on low HP. I only hope they consider adding an item similar to the dried finger that allows me to be invaded without being in Co-Op. Not that I don't want to co-op it could just kill or harm the PvP in the long run when a lot of the player base inevitably falls off.

I finaly discovered the Soul's games with the remake of Demon's Souls and I have to say that the expectation I had about these games that it would make me frustrated and that they were just made for people that don't like fun was totally wrong ! It was a long time I didn't felt so much inside a game and hypnotized by the mood and the Lore of it. Also I had never felt so proud finishing a game before and I'm a 34 yo gamer since the SNES.
The Art direction is really good and people that are whining about graphics just don't understand Art. Art direction and gameplay make great games. I'm a concept designer trained by Feng Zhu in Singapore so trust me. Ultra realistic graphics are worth nothing if your game sucks. Just take the UE5 demo in Matrix. Great photography, jaw's dropping amount of objects on screen with photorealistic textures. No game, no mecanic, no Art direction. Bored in 2 min. Elden Ring have a great Art Direction just like every soul's. Therefore it's a beautiful game, end of discussion.
Anyway, my first point was that I just discovered these games and so, I ve never played the dark souls serie or Bloodborne or Sekiro. So I really don't care they used the same animations cause It would be a whole new game for me ! Ahahah

[But argument itself is just..not good, in terms of "making something new"]
2-For some people the problem of ER being "Dark Souls 4" is because it's supposed to be a different game. Some people just want to see more unique gameplay/mechanics. (And because of lack of information they think there is a chance of that being the case)

The graphics aren't next gen, I agree, but since when do graphics hold weight over Gameplay?

They promised a different universe/series. And that's what we're getting.

Where did you get it? Please, read carefully.
( Also, you can always improve. It doesn't matter if it'll be just a small change. The fact the you did something wich is now considered to be "the best thing" doesn't mean that it's perfect in every way. It just means that it's better than others. If you really think that DS series is pure perfection, this means that you're, maybe, forgetting about hitboxes, useless wepons (ds3) and a bunch of different things that this games have. To make a "perfect" game IS to make a game with NO bugs etc problems at all! That's literally the definition of "perfect". Because it was made by humans for humans, it will be imperfect in one way or another. Because you can't make EVERYONE happy (and that's an important condition to reach "perfection"). So the terms itself just doesn't fit here. )
Also, just as i said previously, SOME PEOPLE WANT THIS GAME TO BE SOMETHING DIFFERENT. That you didn't really understand (because otherwise there would have been no arguments about "Animations Good? Stay Same. Animations Bad? Trash. Animations Same? Animations Good." thing. Because the problem isn't in animations themselves. It's about how reusing some aspects of other game can make game itself feel just like a buch of recycled mechanics. *_Some people_* just don't want another DS game but with a different name)
P.s. Elden Ring FPS? Honestly, that doesn't sound bad at all. Especially if the game itself will be good in terms of movement and structure. But it would be their first FPS so anything is possible.

As my gramps always says "Work smarter, not harder" and "If there ain't nothin wrong, don't change it." Honestly, most of the animations of DS3 were spot on. They were perfect. Most of them. I mean, was jumping a pain? Yep. But they look like they're changing that. Plus, they're adding more.
If you've ever watched Animators React to Bad and Good CGI, you'll know they constantly say that a huge aspect of making good CGI is having a good reference, taking a lot out of that reference and adding in stuff to make it look good. Most explosions of Hollywood are just regular explosions but beefed up x2.
I feel like that's what From Software is doing here. They left the good stuff, took out the bad, and added some great stuff, while still trying to put a new twist on the Souls genre.
Lastly, in my opinion, I feel like those that are complaining about the reused animations are just nit-picking. They wanted some extreme new thing like Bloodborne or Sekiro. But both of those were in different time periods. Bloodborne is in like an Industrial Era and Sekiro is in feudal Japan but with monsters. Dark Souls is medieval fantasy and so is Elden Ring. What'd they expect? Frickin Thomas the Train to come barreling through a castle?

In a recent interview, Miyazaki said that Elden Ring is very close to his ideal game. I think you’re right! Miyazaki has been working for a long time to make the ideal game for himself, and Elden Ring is not only the next step, but perhaps the closest possible and is the culmination of all of their experiments. Think of Demon’s Souls/Dark Souls/Elden Ring as the “core.” He loves this medieval genre, and every time he makes a medieval themed game he gets closer to his ideal game in one way or another. Demon Souls was his first attempt, Dark Souls his second, Bloodborne was where he refined and experimented with making the combat closer to what he wanted, Dark Souls 3 got it to that point, Sekiro experimented with more freedom and mechanics, and Elden Ring is where he returns to the “core” to the type of game he wants to make again for a third huge attempt at making his ideal game. The fact that there is more carryover from the other games means that they’ve either done it or have gotten quite close

There is a core idea of a Dark Souls-type game that Miyazaki has been constantly refining. Instead of devoting resources to something that doesn't need to be fixed, they've utilized that energy in other areas of the game and it clearly shows.

Dark Souls was one of the few games in its time that didn't have facial animations and was still using billboards for its trees. From - and Miyazaki's team especially - has *always* put set dressing on the backseat to laser focus on gameplay mechanics; that's what makes their games so good to play. They always focus on the *game* part of the game.
And as for reusing assets - is this a serious complaint? If you take someone who's never played DS3 and Bloodborne and show them a bunch of random clips from both games, I'd bet an eye they won't be able to tell one from the other. And that doesn't make either one a bad game, and in fact they are vastly different from each other in a number of non trivial aspects.
This time they're attempting something that, mechanically, is unlike anything they've done before, of course they're not gonna be allocating large resources to reinvent stuff they already know works more than fine. That's always been Miyazaki's MO and I wouldn't want it any other way.

    • @Ashlevon
      @Ashlevon 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

From Software always put the aesthetic and mood of a game before gameplay - it's evident, even with their first game, King's Field, and Miyazaki said as much in an interview. That focus on quality and the feel of the game is what make their games so amazing, not gameplay. And therein lies the problem. A game like Bloodborne was incredibly tonally different from Dark Souls, and that was reinforced by the different assets, including sounds and animations. Dark Souls 3 on the other hand, took a lot of inspiration from Bloodborne into a world that was not connected to it, and diluted the quality of the world and the game as a whole, making it feel not quite right, some times even bland or lacking direction, or even just rehashing old tropes in ways that didn't take into consideration why they worked before.
If you've ever done more than one playthrough of these games, you'll know by experience alone that the gameplay mechanics aren't very deep at all. Oftentimes the best course of action is to go for a fast attack instead of a slow one that leaves you exposed for longer, or equipping lighter armor so that you can roll faster, which is more beneficial to your survival than tanking a tiny bit more damage. The other systems that you can interact or be influenced by are also important, but they don't make your inputs differ from normal gameplay, you just change your strategy when approaching some event or location.
People are worried because they got a taste of what From Software could make and their innovative capabilities with Bloodborne and Sekiro, and also how From Software could fail at improving or making something new with Dark Souls 2 and Dark Souls 3. In short, people want new and interesting Bloodborne, not recycled and bland Dark Souls 3.

Fromsoft has been trying to make a game that fits Miyazaki's idea of the perfect game that he has wanted, but development issues always meant they had to cut content. Elden Ring seems like the perfection of those failures being realized in gameplay that is both simplistic but retooled to add newer animations. In fact, i prefer Bloodborne PvP to any of the Souls games. When i mean PvP i mean invasions, not duels. The trailer was 95% rolls tho. Invasions also seem exactly like Bloodborne, so no one will be able to bitch about getting invaded. If you summon help, you are also summoning invaders. That is what you agree upon when you chime the bell in Bloodborne, otherwise there is no way to get invaded if you don't want to get invaded besides the two nightmare areas. Elden Ring has given me something within a game that I NEVER actually thought would legitimately happen outside of my one hype-riddled musing that I say with every title I am hyped for. I am legitimately afraid that I am never going to be able to experience forthcoming games the same. I have always been a slow player, but.....I can feel myself intentionally avoiding things and repeating location returns under the lie of "accidents". I have never played a game where I actually wanted to go back to something I already explored from the absolute top to bottom, in order to inspect it clean again. This game just feels so rewarding, like, man......the previous game design of FromSoft already included the mysticism and consequence of scale. The way that FromSoft has been able to vary exploration and discovery in both small and large spaces is just incredible; the intricacy and layout of Elden Ring's structuring feels so much more liberating and....softer feeling than the other games, in which turning a corner feels strikingly similar to the disruption of stumbling into a very annoying schoolmate twenty years later at the grocery store when all you needed to grab was a bag of shredded cheese, and you're just stuck there, in the purgatory of the future. Slight spoiler (I don't know, it's hella vague, so please don't come for me 😂), but I was in a very large, deep sewer area recently (oh, if you know, trust me, you KNOW), and, Jesus H. Christ, did I underestimate its size. I got lost for hours, but not once did I feel irritated because of being able to constantly translate my real-time directional "flow" in my brain directly to my movement. The sense of curvature to these locations (we can probably owe it to the environmental design deliberately diversifying the architecture for both aesthetic and gameplay) makes my experience embody the present and feel proactive much, much more since one can engage a much more physical and hands-on approach to critical thinking. The game's facet of "learning" has felt wholly kinetic. I dunno about you guys, but I am a strictly auditory learner and can never remember or apply something as proficiently as when I hear it. Ths dialogue is conventionally and purposefully vague, the FromSoft standard, but, with the exponentially larger map and variance in building composition and dimensions, I found it even more difficult to interpret locations of areas and NPCs. I am a staunch guide despiser (only for myself, hold onto your comets), and Elden Ring as a result is almost equally hard for me outside of combat! Talk about mega suckage on my part, but it blows me away that this game has captured "scope" and "denisty" as more than just being really, really, really big. There is largeness whose complexity is never sacrificed. The small places always seem to capture spatial variety really well, too, where some small locations are not limited to merely being tight and claustrophobic. I can take a rubber band, doing the thing where I squish it in on itself so that it gets those little sine waves. Shrunken, but fiercely dynamic. Elden Ring says,
"Don't just think in the moment. Play in it, too."
It's like they did everything they could to create a cohesive experience that you will remember in its entirety. Not just a broken mirror of memories.
Oh, and I have died to fall damage in this game more than any other game I have ever played in my life 😂.
There. I hope that comment was excrutiatingly annoying, but not in the traditional way. This video and the game rock. Thank you for your insights 💜!

I've always felt that when creators build up the opposing argument, it makes their own argument even stronger and far more credible.
It's like using a sword to slice a loaf of bread in half versus using the same sword to successfully slice a tree in half. One achievement is far more impressive and makes the sword seem far greater, even if the sword was the exact same sword both times. Even if your argument is the exact same, if the opposing argument has some strength/weight to it, then your own point is going to be viewed in a better light compared to if you had argued against a weak point.

The previous games using these animations were unable to fully capitalize on them. The games devolved into RB/R1 spamming and rolling. The focus on this game is to 'try again from scratch' if that makes sense. Yes, there is a similar rolling stab for one handed sword attacks. However that was rarely used in ER it deals extra posture damage. Ditto strong attacks, charge attacks, etc. Those animations are already perfectly fine, but as they were never used to their fullest they wanted to give them their time to shine. That's my theory.

Plus if people really want to get into graphics, other games that have come out actually look worse, this game has amazing particle effects and raytracing which most games don't.
