This is, by far, the most helpful content i've come across with. Pre-pandemic, i've been using my voice non-stop and during the pandemic, it just drastically stopped. I realized i've been underusing my voice for almost 7 months. Miss Whitney, your warm ups and tips are a HUGE help. You are a blessing!
you deserve way much more views and suscribers! it's been 6 months I've been practicing with a straw and your videos really made me improve a lot. i never took singing lessons and I felt like I wasn't improving until I followed your videos! thank you so much
I've been a singer, pianist and musician for 27 years. Was trained in 2 school choirs growing up. The highest note I can hit, at the moment, is F an octave above middle C. It can be kinda hard to sing higher because, although I can maybe hit F# and G, I get conscious and it becomes "breathy." From personal experience it IS possible to increase vocal range but, as you said, it's under developed. I can now sing songs that I couldn't really sing before - because I developed my higher range. It doesn't happen over night though and can often take about 3 months.
I'm experiencing a lot of improvement especially in those higher notes and more flexibility in general. Your videos are very very very helpful. Thank you!
Got the singing straw pro a couple days ago and I can already tell the difference. I'm starting on the 4mm to get my voice used to this kind of exercise.
Your exercises with the straw are making a difference to my singing. Thanks so much. I’m a baritone and using the straw is expanding my range in head voice!!!
I had lost my range with age , medications and lack of singing. I could go from Miria C to Deone w but lately could hardly carry a tune i was Just devistaded . My sister Told me about you and my range is slowly coming back. Thank you
@@SingingStraw got it !!!! Can't believe how efficient it is!!!! Love them (I bought the 3 sizes and love each one for a different work) Thank you soooo much ❤
Just noticed the stacking option. I may play with that tomorrow. I was using your warmup no talking video for the past couple of weeks before the challenge, so it is fun to join in the challenge now. Day 3 complete.
Your videos help me inmensely. Like i was strugling to expand my range and i was getting a tired troath and the warm up makesy voice more crisp. This video challenges my range, but i see a slow improvement. And it my vocal chords feel better afterwards. Just a question. Is there a video with higher notes? And what is the highest note in this video? My max note is a g#5, but reaaally pushing it. I want to be able to sing dream on, and that part is that note.
I looooove this video. Is there anyway we could get one like this with no talking? I love the explanations the first few times I do the warmup, but after that I’d rather have no talking. Thanks!
I think the term "pharyngeal" part of the voice can maybe be a bit confusing - but if you mean easier and more resonant sound, that is one of the main goals of straw work!
The S/S does help encourage a more stable and neutral larynx through the back pressure - so that will be a great start. Then I'd encourage you to move to vowels off the straw that have a neutral-low larynx position like the [u] (ooh like in "who") and [ʊ] (the ou sound in "book"). Good luck!
Ooh yes, this is a good idea for a future video! When working onset, you can practice with the straw - so going from just blowing air, to adding sound. Dropping sound again, then adding it back in. Trying to keep the addition of the vocalizing/sound super gentle and easy. Straw will help!
Hello from France, M'y singing teacher taught me about thé strzw. But i have passagio break and some tensions in high notes. May I use some more straw exercices in your opinion. When I reach G5 I immediatly go for falsetto. Is thé straw designed to help for falsetto. Thank you so much
Hi! The Singing / Straw will definitely help! I would suggest checking out some of our other videos and seeing how your voice feels after different exercises. Keep up the great work! You got this :)
@@SingingStraw thank you so much. But I can go throught G5... I think it's thé famous 2d passagio... For the first passagio, m'y voice breaks when I go fast... Sincerly
Ah, no we don't want that. I would suggest trying a larger resistance, for shorter periods of time and see if it goes away. Then work your way back up. Also, make sure you are taking care of your vocal health in all other ways as well - hydration, rest etc. Let me know how it goes!
We want the airflow mostly going through the straw, as that is what helps create the benefit. I often will pinch my nose to make sure I don't have a lot of nasal airflow!
Hey Whitney I have a question if I will stretch my voice like this and sing through a straw and do it on a daily basis will I be able to get into the whistle register?
Straw phonation will help you increase your range - and lay a foundation for finding access to your whistle register! Depending on your voice now, you may be able to stretch into that part of your voice on your own, or you may want to get a vocal coach to guide you, but the straw work will help keep your overall voice healthy!
Hello guys! I am sure alot of you guys have the actual singing straw. Does anyone have good improvement practicing with the singing straw? I am definitely interested.
Hey Manuel! So glad to have you here :). Feel free to read through our reviews and comments to hear from users - but the S/S really does help to gain a healthier and more balanced voice! If you have any questions, feel free to reach out!
Try doubling up on the straw and seeing if you can reach higher notes. Also, be patient and consistent - do a daily slide/stretch warmup and track your highest note. If you're using the straw daily, stretching to the top of your range, you can expect to see an increase in your range within a month or so!
The Original S/S has three 3mm diameter straws, and you can vary the resistance by using one, two or three at a time (effectively giving you a 3mm, 6mm and 9mm option). The S/S Pro was designed for experienced straw singers who want more control and nuanced variability in their resistance. In the PRO set, we have a 2mm, 3mm (standard) and a 4mm. You can't go wrong with either set, but I generally tell folks that if they are new to straw phonation with a narrow diameter straw, go original. If they have been using thin straws for singing in their practice, go for the PRO. Hope this helps!
I know I’m not supposed to hum. Do you keep your voice in a vowel shape as you “sing”. Trying to determine if I’m doing it right. Not feeling tight, but it feels like almost a workout for my voice.
Good Q. I say allow your mouth and vowel to remain neutral. The resistance can feel like a workout for sure, but make sure you’re not fighting it. Use 2 or 3 at a time to get used to the resistance and let me know how it goes!
Great videos. One question though. I Have always had huge issues with my low notes. Would the straw help me with that? I thing I have an overall problem of putting too much tension on my vocal chords, and the low notes are the ones that suffer the most. Which exercises can I do to develop my low range?
Hey Nadia - Yes for sure. The S/S helps to balance out your vocal fold coordination, so if you're too pressed, it will help lighten you up - or if you're too breathy, it will help bring the VF together. Start with using the S/S on your warmups and see how it affects your lower range! I will work on a "building your lower range" video as well!
Amazing exercises! Thank you very much! Dear Whitney, could you please give me an advise with a song of Maroon 5 "She Will Be Loved". It's still hard for me to take a note, when Adam sings part "and she WIIIIIILL be loved" May be there is some special exercise for this. I could be wrong but it's yodel, I think.
Thanks Michael! Yes, I listened to a live version (I always recommend that when trying to analyze what another singer is doing because recorded sessions have all kinds of effects on them) and it does sound like he is flipping to a head voice type sound for "will". Try singing it in the S/S and then go back to the lyric and see how it feels!
I thought some singers want to have a breathy voice, what is ther difference between the sounds? What is wrong if the voice sounds “breathy,” versus the desirable “breathy” sound?
There is nothing wrong with a breathy voice! There are so many different styles and preferences out there - always do what feels good for your voice! Focus on what it feels likes. Hope that helps!
By push do you mean resistance? You should definitely feel the resistance, but make sure you are relaxing into it instead of trying to fight it. Let me know if that helps and/or makes sense!
Good question! Don't stress too much about where exactly your voice breaks when using the straw. It doesn't necessarily correspond with that transition on an open vowel or lyric (because different shapings and coordinations will also change where you break). Let the straw do it's work in balancing your voice and then move to song work!
The S/S will definitely help you learn intuitive healthy and easy singing - but I suggest it in tandem with a talented vocal coach who can help guide you through additional voice challenges!
Thank you so much Coach.. I have a you tube channel.. If you don't mind and if you have a time.. maybe you can give me some inputs.. I will grateful for that
